It was an incredible week. With 24/7 AC in the building, it was a very nice respite from the outdoor heat. In spite of the heat, everyone made the best of things, and worked together to make it a memorable week. I’m working on a few changes for next year, but nothing is firm yet, so I’ll be letting you know what they are at a later date. I want to thank all of you for completing your Evaluation forms. It really helps myself and the committee tweak things to make your week better. I hope you will put July 13 – 17 on your calendars for next summer! Another month flown by. Very cool nights and warm breezy afternoons. We all tend to take so much for granted but the good Lord continues to bless us anyway. Playing the music and visiting with the residents at our play dates is a special blessing. We never know what to expect and just the other day, at a play date, a young senior, [98], had signaled for a staff member that she wanted to leave. We were playing some lively tunes but as this lady walked by she remarked “this is just too boring for me”. We all had a good laugh about that and in the future we’ll try a little harder. Randy and Diane Redman, up in Omak, were able to play at an outdoor craft fair up in Conconully last month. They also joined in with some tunes at the Okanogan county fair but that was not a WOTFA gig. We have a lot of talent up there in the north country and we’re trying to tap into that great resource. We hope to amend our qualifying criteria for workshop scholarship funds so that it is more inclusive for the folks that live so far away. A work in progress. Our District 3 traveling representative, Dan Enslow, has been very busy at various events around the state. Dan shared that he participated with some tunes at the Rainier pick’n party and joined a well-known dobro player, Lauren Postma. Dan conveyed that it was a very enjoyable time for everyone and they played together for about 45 minutes. Dan also reminded me that there was a bluegrass event going on in George WA. all this week, which he will be attending. Jose and Maria Lopez have been on the move also and brought ~ Page 3 ~ back very good reports about the District 5 camp out event. There was good food, music and fellowship and it was described as a very well organized event. Jose and Maria have a 53rd wedding anniversary coming up. One of our less kind members suggested sending Jose a congrats card and Maria a sympathy card, ha,ha. Our newest members, Bruce and Marianne Zelinsky, have jumped right in and have been attending every play date, [12 string and vocals]. They have quite a repertoire of great tunes with many sing a longs that are so much fun. Marianne has just successfully tested for her LPN license so If we could recruit an M.D. and an E.M.T. or two I know many of us would feel safer and follow that urge to get up and dance. Keep the oxygen close, ha,ha. Congratulations to Bruce and Marianne. We had a wonderful time at our own, District 3 music festival. Wayne and Bev Dresker hosted the event at the Wenatchee Boat Club and a big thank you to all the members and guests that jumped in and made it such a fun, successful time. We are already looking forward to next year. Bev has been recovering from wrist surgery; and Wayne’s knee surgery was very successful and he has already gone home. Bud Starr has been going in for a number of procedures and he will be joining us next Sunday. Thanks everyone for your prayers. Ron Hubbard has also been out with a bad back and there seems to be a bunch of us that take turns tending to our aches and pains. We all covet the prayer cover that so many of the WOTFA members provide for our whole organization. Please don’t stop and we won’t either. Don’t know about you, but cooler temps on the east side of the state makes all of us feel more like playing music again. District 7 enjoyed a fair turnout of about thirty plus people for our first meeting of the season at the Broadmoor Mobile Home Park Clubhouse. President Jim Samuels called the meeting to ~ Page 6 ~ order and reported on our summer activities as well as our treasury report. It was voted on and approved that our monthly meetings will be held at Broadmoor Park for the rest of the season. There was plenty of parking. It is handicapped accessible and has a GREAT space for potluck as well as space for the show. Jim reminded folks that the time to begin renewing membership dues will be October. If you renew in October, it will be good for all of 2015. A special thank you to all the ladies that helped set up the potluck tables in September. I don’t have everyone’s name right now, but it was one of the BEST potlucks of the year! Good job! Also, thanks to Jim Samuels for volunteering to lead us as we are transitioning to new environment all across the board. Another special thanks to District 9 bass player, Dave Perkins, for spicing up our Crescent playdate. (We missed you Janet! ) We always feel happy when they join us! President Jim reported that he’s having some difficulty booking playdates with some of the previous retirement homes as many are being sold to large corporations out of state and cannot commit to hosting us, Jim said he would fill in the dates as he gets commitments and the musicians can get additional information on these additions to the calendar at our next playdate. Jam-Potluck-short meeting, more jamming District 9 Elections: October meeting It's been awhile since I've had my ducks in a row, and made a newsletter deadline- still not real sure I'm gonna make it! Dist 9 has had a productive if slightly disheveled summer. We played at the coronation of "The Egg-Day Queen" and also after the ceremony. We went to the new home of the workshop in Moses Lake and had a great time, came back and played our playdates and at the SWW fair. We skipped the July meeting and apparently should have skipped the August one as well because there were only 2 or 3 of us there and we didn't play. However we are back on track now had a wonderful meeting on the 20th. October meeting will be 18th and we have the regular playdates of the 8th and the14th. October is election month and if you've got ANYTHING to say, do or change, now is the time. All ideas are welcome and you can never have too many brains at work on moving forward in a positive direction- in fact if anyone wants to be the reporter...... I'm just saying! Hope to see everyone soon. On a more somber note, we lost Gary Phelps recently; our thoughts and prayers go to his family, he will be missed. ~ Page 8 ~ FROM THE MUSIC EDITOR: Tennessee Wagoner I read in the morning paper the other day that the Waggoner Ranch was up for sale. If you’ve got half a billion dollars or so lying around you could snatch it up. I’ll pass, but it reminded me that one of my favorite hoedowns, ‘Wagoner’ or ‘Tennessee Wagoner’ has often been linked to this 533,000 acre ranch, the largest in Texas. Some even call it ‘Texas Wagoner’ after the founder, Dan Waggoner, who started a successful ranching business in 1851 near Decatur and expanded from there, along with son, W.T., and others. Silly me, I just thought the tune was named for someone who drove a wagon. Nowadays oil and horses represent much of the estate’s holdings, as well as cattle. Among the heirs and heiresses is the sculptor, Electra Waggoner Biggs, most well known for her statue of Will Rogers, ‘Riding Into the Sunset.’ The president of General Motors at the time was a fan (as well as an in-law) and named the Buick Electra after her. A more convincing story of this tune’s origins (or at least its name’s) is in reference to a race horse, Wagner, who bested Gray Eagle in the Louisville race of 1838, a precursor to the Kentucky Derby (see Tennessee Grey Eagle in Evergreen Fiddler Vol. I). Wagner’s jockey was a slave named Cato who won his freedom for his efforts that day. Gray Eagle lost this race but his descendants have gone on to win many such races as he is a principal ancestor for most American Saddlebreds (including Morgans and Thoroughbreds). I first learned this widely played hoedown from my mentor, Earl Willis (EF I), who would say that more square dances have been done to this tune than pretty much any other. Like many fiddlers, he played some variations similar to what you hear with Bob Simmons (EF1). You can work out something like these if you want to on your own I’m sure. In the first full measure notice how Bob dives into the down beat with a down bow and then slurs from C to a C & E double stop on the up bow and then back and forth to end on an up bow. Earl played it this way too and I have long referred to this rhythmic technique as the “Wagoner Lick.” It works well here and lots of other places as well. See what you can do with it. Bob applies it nicely in the b part as well. Be sure and go to www.wotfa.org/tuneOfTheMonth to listen to this tune. You will also surely enjoy Bob on Voyager Recording’s cd #334 ‘Remembering.’ Thanks (as often) to Andrew Kuntz at www.tunearch.org, www.waggonerranch.com, www.oldtimeparty.wordpress.com and Wikipedia.
