Welcome to Merthyr Tydfil’s Training Directory for April 2015 to March 2016. The training
opportunities support providers in meeting national minimum standards as well as offering a
holistic approach to continuous professional development. The courses are available to anyone working in the
early years and childcare sector or those wishing to access employment in the sector in Merthyr Tydfil.
A booking/enrolment form is enclosed and should be returned by the closing date given per course. Please
keep a copy of the form to remind you of the date of the training, if you change your place of employment or
address prior to the course taking place please advise us in order that we may ensure we have the correct
contact details for you.
Note for Childminders: if you wish to be considered for this course, please return your booking form to Stacey
Chamberlain at the Integrated Children's Centre, Duffryn Road, Pentrebach CF48 4BJ or email to
[email protected] who will authorise the booking and send the booking form on your behalf.
We will email/contact the manager approximately 3 to 4 weeks prior to the event to confirm your place.
The majority of courses are offered free of charge but a cancellation fee of £20 may be charged if places are not
cancelled prior to the course. There is often a waiting list for courses and places can be filled if we receive
sufficient notice of cancellation.
Practitioners who wish to gain qualifications or top up their existing qualifications can receive support of up to
£150 if they wish to undertake a level 2 or level 3 course. Please contact Stacey to check eligibility.

The Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership
The Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership (EYDCP) was established in 1998 to represent all
those with an interest in early years education, childcare and employment and training opportunities within the
sector. The EYDCP has representation from the private, voluntary and statutory sectors.
Early Years Development and Childcare Co-ordinator
The Early Years and Childcare Co-ordinator oversees the delivery of Early Years and Childcare services for
children 0-14 years in Merthyr Tydfil. . The Co-ordinator works very closely with the central Early Years and
Childcare team and key partners in the voluntary sector to ensure the delivery of new strategically planned
childcare provision whilst ensuring quality, sustainability, affordability and accessibility of existing provision.

Early Years and Childcare Officer
The Early Years and Childcare Officer is responsible for promoting and maintaining the distribution of Childcare
Strategy Grants to early years and childcare practitioners. The Early Years and Childcare Officer is also

Family Information Service Officer (FIS)
The Family Information Service Officer is responsible for maintaining a database of early years, childcare
provision, leisure activities and family support services throughout the Borough of Merthyr Tydfil. The FIS Officer
works in partnership with childcare providers to provide impartial advice and information on early years settings.
Also, if you would like to work in childcare, or are currently working in childcare or looking for a new role, register
with the FIS and receive information on free training and childcare job vacancies in Merthyr Tydfil. If you would

Language and Play Coordinator
The Language and Play Co-ordinator is responsible for rolling out a borough wide, six week programme for
parents/carers and professionals involved with children aged 0-3 years. The programme aims to enhance
communication skills between parent and child through talking, playing, singing and sharing of books. We also
offer Number and Play which is a five week programme to enhance children’s number skills.
Following the success of the Flying Start Home Visit Language and Play Programme we are now able to offer
this service borough wide.

Early Years Advisory Teacher
The Early Years Advisory Teacher is responsible for providing advice and support to settings on the Foundation
Phase and becoming approved Early Years Education Providers. If you would like to discuss any issues relating

MERTHYR TYDFIL COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL CHILDREN and YOUNG PEOPLE’S
PARTNERSHIP
The fundamental purpose of the Children and Young People’s Partnership is to improve the provision of services
for children and young people in the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil. Membership is wide and includes Merthyr
Tydfil County Borough Council, Cwm Taf NHS Trust, Communities First, Voluntary Action Merthyr Tydfil (VAMT),
Social Services, School Governors and Barnardos. The Partnership continues to be accountable to the Welsh
Assembly Government. The Partnership recognise the importance of supporting providers in their role of
providing high quality childcare and early years education, while also promoting staff development and Quality
Assurance.
The Family Information Service (FIS)
The Family Information Service (FIS) is a FREE service offering impartial and confidential information on a range
of early years, childcare, family support services and leisure activities for children and young people from 0 -19
years. The Family Information Service covers the whole of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough. It offers a one-stop
information service for parents, carers and professionals who need information about children and young
people’s services and activities.
The Service provides information on the following:
• Childminders
• Day Nurseries
• Playgroups / Cylch Meithrins
• Out of School Clubs
• Parent / Carer and Toddler Groups / Ti a Fi

• Becoming a childcare provider
• Leisure activities and clubs
NATIONAL MINIMUM STANDARDS
All childcare providers operating over two hours and working with children under the age of 8 years are
inspected and registered by Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW). All providers need to have
a copy of the National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare which is available from Care and Social
Services Inspectorate Wales.
The document is a helpful guide to the standards of care expected from childcare providers. In addition, it
provides guidance for those wishing to set up a new provision and is helpful to those responsible for staff
induction and training. Parents may also find the document useful as a guide to what they should expect from
childcare providers. The document can be accessed on the internet at www.csiw.wales.gov.uk under
Regulations and Standards.

Makaton Signing for Babies is recommended for professionals,

babies and children in their care and have no previous experience
of Makaton. It is a flexible, fun training sessions designed to

autism from a value base of respect and understanding of
diversity.
• To reflect on how aspects of autism may undermine
attachment formation.
• To explore ways of initiating and improving communication
with young Autistics.
• To examine a range of strategies for positively meeting some
of the challenges presented by autistic behaviour.
• To consider new avenues of supporting the development of
autistic children through play.
