Reading Log Scaffold 2.doc ELD Program jkeifer January 2008 ELD 1 Name: ____________________________ Writing a Paragraph Date: ____________________ Period:___ A paragraph is a group of sentences that all tell about the same idea. One sentence, called the topic sentence or introduction, tells the main or “big” idea. Other sentences support the main idea and tell details about the main idea. The last sentence of the paragraph is the conclusion. In ELD 1 we will begin each paragraph with the topic sentence or the main idea. Parts of the Paragraph The topic sentence tells the main idea of the paragraph. This sentence tells the reader what you will communicate in your paragraph. The supporting sentences explain more about what you said in the topic sentence. They have many details. Begin each sentence after the sentence before it. The Conclusion finishes the paragraph. It “wraps up” all of the details and brings closure to the paragraph. Think of it as a summary of what you have already written. Indent the first sentence of a paragraph. When you indent you leave a space before you start to write. An example paragraph: There are many things I like about my family. My Mom is very helpful and she takes good care of my sister and me. My Dad is smart and I can ask him a bunch of questions. He almost always knows the answer! My sister is good at math and sometimes she helps me with my math homework. Sometimes I am upset at my family for different reasons but in the end I always realize how lucky I am to have a mom, a dad and a sister that love me. Donʼt start a new line every time you start a new sentence. Brainstorm ideas about your family on the back of this paper and then write your own paragraph. Include a topic sentence, details, and a conclusion. Be sure to indent your paragraph and begin every sentence with a capital letter. End each sentence with the proper punctuation (. ? or !). ______________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ jkeifer 10/2013 ELD 1 How To Write a Paragraph.doc ELD 1 Name: __________________________ Paragraph: A Typical Day Period: ____ Date: _______________ Write a paragraph below: 1.
