CORRECTION
In one of the communications sent
out by the Lands Department, the letter read that if implemented, a Land
Code would remove Metlakatla from
40% of the Indian Act—when really, it
would remove Metlakatla from only
25% of the Indian Act.
We apologize for this error.

2015 All Native Basketball Tournament
Submitted by: Community Contribution
“Metlakatla Crest Ladies went into this year’s 2015
All Native Basketball Tournament as underdogs, a
title put on them because of the absence of key
players. This year’s Metlakatla Crest had their work
cut out for them, but they were ready to take on the
challenge. Two players who haven’t played since
Metlakatla’s last win in 2008; it was nice to welcome back Emily Wilson and Jordan Leask. The
team also welcomed a new player to the team, Tara
Prevost who played for the first time this year.
Metlakatla also missed their long-time coach
Wayne Haldane who retired after last year’s tournament. The team asked Peter Jackson to step in as
their coach two weeks before the tournament.
It was a difficult season to get everyone out for the
women’s league games, and also for the annual
Christmas Classic. Usually, the team uses the league
games and the Christmas Classic to gel and learn
how each other plays. Unfortunately, going into
this year’s big tournament, Metlakatla ‘s first game
was the first time all the players were together.
However, the team went into the tournament feeling determined and confident that they would play
hard right to the end win or lose. Metlakatla’s first
game was against a tough Hazelton squad who
would go on to finish in the top 4. Metlakatla came
out slow; shots weren’t falling and it lead to a deficit that would later prove to be too much. After the
first two quarters, the team started to feel more
comfortable and started to gel a little better with
each other, they then went on a run. A few big
three pointers and some key stops got Metlakatla
within a few points. But, the big deficit and fight
back zapped their energy and in the end, Metlakatla
lost by 8.
The second game was against a fairly new team to
the tournament, a team who liked to run run run.
Metlakatla tried to slow the pace as a running game
was not suited for the team.
This tactic didn’t work and Kamloops shot out to
another double digit lead to start the game.
Metlakatla was again forced to try make a comeback and they started to chip away at the lead.
Once Metlakatla caught up, the game went back and
forth.

March 2015
The momentum started to switch until one of their
starters took a big hit and was forced out of the
game for a few minutes. As sore and banged up as
she was, Tracy Hughes came back into the game
and ended up hitting a few big three’s to draw the
team closer once again. Late in the fourth, after a
gruelling come back, Kamloops set up their full
court press. The press was successful as it made
Metlakatla force turnovers which would later
prove to be too costly. Metlakatla lost by three
points.

Humpherville warm up t-shirt. Metlakatla also
honoured Roddy Wilson by wearing black ribbon
on their left shoulder.
With a new look to the team, every single player
played hard and should be proud. This team filled
with veterans and young players had a lot of people talking about how well they did. It is exciting
to hear that there may be a fight for spots next
year as there may be a possible 17 players fighting
for 12 spots. Let’s see who trains this off season to
make next year’s squad. Wai Wah!
Metlakatla lost their first two games for the first
time in many years. The team went in to the tournament confident they would play hard right to
the end win or lose, and they did just that. They
played hard to proudly represent the small village
of Metlakatla. Metlakatla also honoured the late
Ken Humpherville by using an In Memory of Ken

Metlakatla puts on basketball camp!
On January 31st and February 1st,
Metlakatla Recreation Department
held a 2—Day Basketball Camp with
Matthew Conboy of Pure Advantage
Basketball. Matthew is from Vancouver Washington, USA. He works with
a wide range of athletes, all who vary
in skill level. He was very enthusiastic about building a relationship with
our community of Metlakatla: “I am
very thankful for the opportunity to
work with your community. The goal
was for every player to be challenged
and leave with more love for the
game and self confidence. We accomplished this and had a blast doing it.
Thank you Troy Leighton, Jordan
Leask and the Metlakatla community
for this incredible opportunity,”
Conboy stated.

ton to make this camp possible. The
camp was targeted to cater to Metlakatla Band Members, making them first priority to sign up to
attend and participate in the camp. Metlakatla Recreation Department decided to open up the camp
to the public, for a cost of $60. People who participated in the camp got to enjoy a meal and refreshment each day, and received a Pure Advantage Basketball t– shirt, opportunities to win prizes, and
of course the awesome basketball camp where many were able to expand their basketball skills
and knowledge and have fun doing it.
Metlakatla Recreation Department would like to thank Maher Terminals for their donation that
helped go toward food and refreshments for the camp.

Parenting Workshop: “Looking Back in order to
Move Forward”
Submitted by: Sandra Carlick/Education Director HS-Gr12
From where I am today as a proud, Ts’msyen woman and looking back to the traditional teachings
from my parents/grandparents, I recall the treasured memories about my life growing up in
Metlakatla. I must say how fortunate I am to have had this opportunity. I learned how to harvest
and preserve our traditional foods; ts’ax (clams), gaboox (cockles), la’aska (seaweed), ‘yaans,
(chiton ), gyenti (sea- cucumber) ,bilhaa (abalogne), maay ( berries), and xswaanax (herring eggs),
I watched my dad put blue-stone under the rocks to attract hats’l (octopus), how to clean ‘assu,
pick gumeda (seagull eggs) out at Scorduree, pluck ha’a ( geese), and hang and smoke ‘wah
(oolichans).
Learning our traditional ways of harvesting and preserving foods and listening to the fluent Ts’msyen speakers, were the best years of my life, and I know that many of you at home have had the
same experiences and teachings.
The Education Department is planning a 3-day Parent/Grandparent Cultural workshop sponsored
by United Way/Trevor Williams – Success by 6, March 25-27 at NIFCS in Prince Rupert. The purpose of this event is to find different ways to help our children be proud of their Ts’msyen culture.
You will be learning about history, language, protocols of Ayaawx, Ts’msyen Law, Adaawx (stories
that have been passed down), battles with the Tlingit over Ts’msyen territory and the resilience of
our chiefs, the archeological question and chronological time-line of the Ts’msyen, history of the
Winter villages through Venn Passage and the Summer villages at the bottom of the Skeena River,
Ts’msyen Seasonal Rounds, and the protocols of Feasting.
Over the years I have been doing extensive research and learning from prominent fluent speakers. I
have a Master’s Degree in First Nation Education/Curriculum & Design and I also have obtained a
degree from all the teachings of my parents/grandparents. I feel confident that from what I know of
the Ts’msyen history that I can I teach others. Three days is not enough time to cover this broad area of Ts’msyen culture but parents will obtain some knowledge that you can teach your children
about this history so they can be proud of the contributions and legacy their grandparents left behind.
Plans are also underway to host a 2-week Language/ Cultural Summer Camp for children who live
in Metlakatla; K-Gr. 3. Tentative Date; July 13-24
Please call Monica Ryan-Gamble, Cell# 250 600 – 7656 and let her know if you are interested in attending this Parent/ Grandparent 3-Day Cultural Workshop.

Environmental Assessment: Major Projects 2015 Update
Submitted by: William Nelson, Environmental Assessments Assistant
The Environmental Assessment team in the
Metlakatla Stewardship Office had a very busy 2014.
There were several major projects, (including the
LNG terminal at Lelu Island and two LNG pipelines),
all going through full environmental review at the
same time. The two pipelines and the Lelu Island terminal were issued Environmental Assessment certificates (approvals) in late 2014. However, there has
yet to be any final investment decisions made by proponents, and the projects still need to get permits
from various regulatory agencies (including DFO and
the BC Oil and Gas Commission) before they can be
built.

Existing industrial development—Coal terminal
at Ridley Island
In 2015, there are going to be several more major LNG facilities filing their applications for Environmental
Assessment review. This will result in another busy year for the Stewardship Office to be fully involved in
these reviews. Nexen will be putting in their application for their Aurora LNG export facility proposed for
the South East portion of Digby Island. WCC LNG (Imperial ExxonMobil) could also be submitting a full application for their project located towards Tuck Inlet. Along with these applications, there will be a lot more
investigative research done by these and other proponents in Metlakatla Territory. The work will involve
geotechnical investigations and baseline data collection regarding vegetation, marine mammals, and bird
observations. There will also be air quality and other environmental baseline data collection to inform their
Environmental Assessment applications. You can expect to see regular helicopter and boat traffic servicing
these projects in 2015.
The activities of some of the newest local LNG projects are as follows:
WCC LNG (Imperial Exxon) partnership is doing archaeological and geotechnical investigative research at Tuck Inlet (Lot 444) in hopes of developing either a floating or land-based LNG export facility. The company has been using helicopters and boats to transport personnel and drill rigs to undertake their investigations.
Aurora LNG (Nexen) has chosen Digby Island as a possible location for their LNG export facility. They
will continue archaeological, geotechnical and environmental investigations through 2015.
Woodside Oil & Gas of Australia has chosen Grassy Point as a possible location for a LNG export facility. This facility could be either on land or a floating facility. In 2015 they will continue to do preliminary archaeological, environmental and geotechnical investigations at Grassy Point.
Each proposed LNG terminal described above will require a pipeline to deliver gas to their terminals. None
of the terminals have yet to announce pipeline partners, but when they do, further environmental review
will be required to approve the pipelines. The Metlakatla Stewardship Office will be fully involved in these
reviews as well.
To speak further about Metlakatla Stewardship’s role in participating in and reviewing LNG projects in
Metlakatla territory, you can contact Anna Usborne by email ([email protected]), by phone (250-628
-3315) or by dropping by the offices in Metlakatla anytime. We always appreciate hearing your views on
the proposed LNG development and other matters of concern to Metlakatla members.
