The Metrology Laboratory
(Radionuclides)
What kind of Laboratory are we talking about?
1. National Metrology Laboratory (NML)?
2. Calibration laboratory often accredited?
(reference standards and/or working standards)
3. End-users laboratory?
We are not talking about the first option!

The Metrology Laboratory
Purpose
The Metrology Laboratory of Radionuclides is for respond to user
needs by:
• Multi-nuclide identification and activity calculation for
target nuclides depending on the sample type.
• Minimum Detectable Activity calculation.

The Metrology Laboratory
Activities
• Obtain reliable measurement results and assure the traceability
of radioactivity measurements using reference materials and/or
standard sources
• Participate in national
comparison exercises
and
international
interlaboratorial
• Participate with the NML on development of reference
standards
• Transfer and share know-how among
community, end-users and other stakeholders
the
metrology
• Find solutions to some of the problems associated with the
measurement of natural and artificial radionuclides

The Metrology Laboratory
Relations between end-users laboratory and NML
The purpose of the
NML is:
-
establish, maintain and disseminate National Standards of
the quantity activity;
ensure international traceability of National Standards.

The Metrology Laboratory
Relations between end-users laboratory and NML
The end-user laboratory is industry type dependent
The NML can help to:
•
Identify the needs of the end-users
•
identify the necessary components of the laboratory
for a specific situation
•
Establish the necessary procedures

NORM industries
Which kind of industries are we talking about?
• NORM industries
The use and processing of NORM may
increase the concentration of radioactive
content in primary, secondary products
and wastes derived.
• and also any other, whose final
products can incorporate some
radioactive material as for example the
metallurgic industries.

Until now only the need of the commercial exchanges leads to have
certificates with the radioactive content of the goods.

Metrology for end users
Which is the driving force that can lead to strengthen the
metrology of radionuclides by end-users?
•
Correct perception of the importance of metrology
•
Some concern about the radiation protection of workers
•
National regulatory authorities
– National legislation
• Directive 2013/59/EURATOM will bring new demands to the NORM industries
•
Commercial trade
- Need to have a certificate with the radioactive content of the
product

Closing remarks
• Efforts must be directed to show to NORM industries endusers and stakeholders the importance of the metrology.
• The development of the metrology of radionuclides is
different from one country to another:
– Portugal have obvious weaknesses in this field revealing yet
an insufficient legislation in this domain.
– Similarly to other countries, the pressure of commercial trade
can be a driving force to strengthening metrology at endusers level.
• E&T are crucial tools to promote metrology for end-users.
