What does the ‘Delta’ in Delta Box mean?
D
E
L
T

R
A
M
E
Delta means the triangular shape of the frame formed by the three points of the lower and upper ends of the
head pipe and the rear pivot point. And, because the cross-section of the frame is a box shape, it is called a
Delta Box frame. The first frame with this basic shape was used on a YZR500 Yamaha GP500 (present
MotoGP) class race machine back in 1983, and it proved to be a good frame for improving the machine’s
handling stability. Since then the shape has evolved in various ways and it has become the basic frame type
used on most of the world’s super-sport bikes.
Structure and Function
The frame adopts a box-shaped cross-section that enables a larger cross-section surface area, lighter weight
and high rigidity. Of particular note in the design is the structure by which the steering head and the pivot point
are connected in as straight a line as possible and the fact that a special construction technique is used to give
a triangular shape (delta) to the side surface to achieve outstanding rigidity. Another exterior characteristic is the
added width that is given to the steering head area where particular stress comes to bear during riding.
Impacts
1) Significant weight reduction was achieved(a dry weight of
126kg was made possible on the TZR250).
2) The lightweight, high-rigidity chassis helped to achieve highlevel performance in the basic functions of “running, turning
and stopping”.
3) Outstanding steering stability and nimble handling were also
achieved.
Designing the frame for the YZF-R15 with the optimum balance of longitudinal, lateral and torsional rigidity have
given this model a high superior riding feel.
What if the Rockets we use didn't use liquid propellants for thrust ?!. What if
there was an alternate way to produce the same thrust but
by keeping the weight to the minimum ?!. Its easier to
carry a battery which contains as much energy as that
contained in tons of liquid propellants. So why not carry a
battery instead of the liquid propellents ?!. The tricky part
begins here - How to get enough thrust from battery
power?!. The solution is simple, but the implementation
with the present technology is not so easy. We know that
light has a dual nature, i.e. being a wave (energy) as well
as a particle (mass). If we are able to control the extent
of this dual nature, we could make use of it for propulsion.
Million
Dollar
Idea !
Let me make it simple. Imagine holding a torch. When you switch it ON, its
bulb takes the electric energy from battery to produce light energy. The
moment the light comes out of the torch, its particle nature should become
predominant. If that happens, it would act similar to our present rockets in
which the momentum of the out-flown propellant drives the rocket. This
momentum of light (Particle) should be able to move the torch in the opposite
direction (in real situation the rocket).
The equipment for this timely conversion of a wave into particle is yet to
be invented.
The application of this technology doesn't get limited to rockets. If we succeed
in making this into reality; this can be used in other forms of transportations
too. Just imagine vehicles running with this technology…How clean the
World would be ?!.

Crafting
Future
SITAW
EDITION 1
1 April 2015
Sitaw (Sit Anywhere) was rather an amazing invention than a modification to
what is currently available in market. The project team consists of a group of
5 students from S4 M.E, MITS(2013-2017 batch) namely Sebastian Antony,
Akhil B Arackal, Nithin Joseph, Arjun A, Amal Raju and was guided by Mr.
Sunil Paul, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, MITS. According
to the team members, the unique design was inspired from office chairs.
The team aimed at creating a model in which people especially factory
workers, soldiers etc could sit in different positions according to their comfort
& situation. The design of the model came into being after a lot of discussion,
sketching and observing the current products available in market.
After designing the product, the testing was done by one of their tallest
members proving that even an individual with long legs can easily be
comfortable in the Sitaw. Framework of the Sitaw was made using aluminium
making it lighter and stronger hence it can easily bear the weight of a normal
person. Currently the Sitaw has a manual locking mechanism which the team
is trying to automate in the future to make it more user-friendly. Currently the
total cost of Sitaw is about ₹2000.
The team is also trying to make slight modifications in the Sitaw so that it
can be used by handicapped individuals with artificial legs. As quoted by one
of the judges, the Sitaw was a result of out of the box thinking and therefore
it grabbed a lot of attention among the audience which made it a popular
project at the Manorama Yuva Master Mind 2015.
Integrated Desalination System
In this era of artificial intelligence and cloud computing, lack of electricity and fresh drinking water are still two
major difficulties faced by mankind alike. As a relief to this major difficulty a group of students from SNGCE
Kadayirippu came up with a project called Integrated Desalination System. IDS aimed at providing purified
drinking water to people at very low cost using environment friendly methods. The project had a five stage
filtration box containing layers of sand, carbon, and involved other
purification methods like reverse osmosis, UV filtration and ultra
line filtration.
It used a 60W solar power panel out of which only 32W is required
for the purification and the remaining could be used as AC supply
electricity for other uses. The water was pumped using a pedal
driven centrifugal pump which was driven at 200 rpm with pedal
using belt mechanism. Overall the project could purify upto 35,000
tds water (Total Dissolved Water) and had an output of 15 litre/hr.
Due to the innovative design and working of the project it bagged
the Second Prize at Yuva Master Mind 2015 worth ₹15k.
The Project team consisted of 3 members, Nithin Mathew (Leader), Hariprasad K C, Vishnu B Suresh and was
guided by Mr. B Sibin, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at SNGCE. In addition to the prize the
team also received an offer for 10 models to be made. Most important feature of this semi-automatic project is
that it can be operated even by an unskilled person and saves electricity and provides pure drinking water.

WORKING
This robot uses differential mechanism for driving. It has two wheels & when both are running,
robot moves forward but if one of them stops, the robot turns depending on which motor
stopped. The robot has 4 sensors, 2 for each motor. When the sensor receives light, the
corresponding motor runs, else it stops.
While over a straight line, all 4 sensors receive the reflected light, hence the motor moves forward. Imagine the path turns
right, the motors right sensor gets over the black line and hence doesn't receive any reflected light. So the right motor stops,
but the left motor still runs; thus turning the Robot to its right. Turning to its left is similar to turning right, this time the left
motor stops and the right motor runs.
CONSTRUCTION
Drill the HDPE sheet according the parts you got. It should
look similar to the picture shown right.
Next Assemble the parts and solder them as shown in the
figure. Follow the colour code of wires given in the picture to
avoid errors. Connect the blue wires from sensor to the blue wires on mother board in order.
Between Vcc of sensor module and battery, do add 270 ohm resistor.

CATIA (Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive
Application) is a multi-platform CAD/ CAE/ CAM commercial
software application developed by the French company
Dassault Systèmes . CATIA is the cornerstone of the
Dassault Systèmes software suite which is written in the C++
programming language. CATIA started as an in-house
development in 1977 by French aircraft manufacturer Avions
Marcel Dassault, to develop Mirage fighter jet. It was later
adopted in the aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and
other industries. Massive changes were incorporated into
this software during the time span leading the usage of this
software by Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, Bell Helicopters etc.
1 April 2015
CATIA is considered as a CAM program, in addition to a CAD program, in
the meaning that you can export files to CNN machines and then can be
manufactured. CATIA Also supports graphics from other programs such as
AutoCAD, for example, it is possible to copy a drawing from AutoCAD and
enter it to CATIA and then perform CATIA operations on it, CATIA files can
be kept with dwg extension which is supported by AutoCAD or the default
extension. CATIA competes in the high-end CAD/CAM/CAE market with
Siemens NX and PTC Creo Elements/Pro.
CATIA V6 redefines CAD from the purely physical product
definition and expands it from digital mock-up to functional
mock-up taking into account the multiple views that
necessitates the product development (i.e. Requirement,
Functional, Logical and Physical). CATIA is found in a variety
of industries throughout the world. Some of these industries
include; Aerospace, Appliances, Architecture, Automotive,
Construction, Consumer Goods, Electronics, Medical,
Furniture, Machinery, Mold and Die, and Shipbuilding
CATIA has played a major role in NASA's design of the Space
Shuttle. The military - working with private industry, uses CATIA
for the design of "jet-fighter" aircraft, aircraft carriers, helicopters,
tanks and various other forms of weaponry.
