M A R Y B R E M E R K E L L E Y, C L A S S O F 1 9 6 5 , we honor you today with the Alumnae Achievement Award.
This award is presented to alumnae whose accomplishments and service to society exemplify the values and virtues
set forth by the College.
As a distinguished historian of American women’s experiences, you have shared your wealth of knowledge at
the University of North Carolina, Lehman College—CUNY, Dartmouth College, and the University of Michigan.
Additionally, your service as president of both the Society of Historians of the Early American Republic and the
American Studies Association and as a member of the executive board of the Organization of American Historians
has positioned you as a notable scholar and contributor to the field of historical inquiry.
Your expertise in the realm of women and gender in nineteenth century America has culminated in the publication
of several books, including, in 2006, Learning to Stand and Speak: Women, Education, and Public Life in America’s
Republic, which has been called a landmark publication in American women’s history. You have used your
powerful voice and extensive knowledge of women’s learning in service to your own alma mater as a member of
the Mount Holyoke College Board of Trustees and the Alumnae Association Board of Directors.
For your service to the arts and sciences as a leading scholar of women and gender in nineteenth century America
and for your service to your alma mater, the Alumnae Association is honored to present you, on your fiftieth reunion,
with the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Achievement Award.
