Dear Great Western Alumnae
Greetings and Happy Spring to all. The Great Western Area
is growing. In the last few months we have added new alumnae chapters and there are more in the works waiting to become official. Some of the new chapters added or n the horizon are in California, Idaho and Washington.
Our Region Weekend is approaching the weekend of April
24 in Santa Monica, California. It is being held at the DoubleTree Suites By Hilton located at 1707 Fourth Street, Santa
Monica, CA 90401. The costs are $115 / attendee for full
event, $105 / attendee for Saturday only. We are planning
several sessions for alumnae and hope to see many of our
sisters there.

California Greetings to All
A belated New Year to all. The alumnae chapters in California had wonderful holiday parties this past December and have sprung into 2015 with enthusiasm. This past month we have had terrific news; National Council
has approved the petition for South Orange County to be formally recognized as an alumnae chapter. Since this
past fall, the founding members of this chapter have been working hard to gather sisters in the area to join the
chapter. Right now the chapter is at 30+ and continues to grow.
Our other piece of news is the colonization of a collegiate chapter at Cal State University, San Marcos. Along
with opening a new college chapter comes the challenge of finding supporting alumnae in this area north of San
Diego. We are in the process of reaching out to alumnae in the area to form a new alumnae chapter and to support our new college chapter. If you know of any interested sisters in the North San Diego/San Marcos/
Escondido area who are interested in becoming an active alumnae, please have them connect with me.
Southern California Lamplighters celebrated their 59th Flame Fantasy Benefit at Santa Anita Race Track in
March. It was a beautiful day at the races with 150 alumnae and their guests. Lamplighters was able to raise
over $9,000 in proceeds that will benefit the Starkey Hearing Foundation, The Delta Zeta Foundation and our
local scholarships.
As we quickly approach Spring Graduations, we are looking forward to reaching out to new graduates to become
active alumnae. We hope to connect with these new alumnae to keep them active in our Delta Zeta community.

The South Sound Alumnae Meet Up is applying for official Alumnae status. This group, which is located south
of Seattle, WA, just started meeting last year. After 3 gatherings, the group has decided to file for official group
status. This group is a wonderful addition as many alumnae move to this area in connection with the military. This group serves as a wonderful place for women, new to the area, to connect with other Delta Zetas and
feel more at home.

ANCHORAGE
Anchorage Area Delta Zeta enjoyed their Winter Luncheon on February 22 at Barbara Barnes Norrell’s home.
Joining us was our newest Alumnae, Jessica Parker Luchterhand who graduated from Arkansas Tech University last spring.
Plans for our May gatherings, lunch in Palmer on
May 16 and participating in Relay for Life the
weekend of May 26 and 27th, are underway.

LOS ANGELES
Happy Spring from the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter!
Fall and Winter were an exciting time for our chapter filled with fun social
and philanthropy events. In September we participated in the American
Heart Associaon’s Heart Walk on the Santa Monica Pier, we also went for a
hike in Monrovia Canyon Park. In October we held a bowling night at a
local bowling alley, participated in Founder's Day with the Long Beach
Alumnae Chapter, and had a Hocus Pocus themed movie night. In November we had our first ever Friendsgiving potluck dinner and participated in a
Heal the Bay beach clean-up on Venice Beach. We closed out the year with
a cookie swap holiday party in early December.
Moving into 2015, we’ve started the year strong by adopting our chapter’s
first-ever bylaws and standing rules. In January we supported our closest
collegiate chapter, Xi Omicron at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), with their recruitment weekend
and started an alumnae-collegiate mentorship program. In February we held a happy hour at a local restaurant, had a coffee event with our collegiate sisters at LMU, and participated in a LA Food Bank volunteer day. In March we have planned a brunch, wine and painting night, and the first meeting of our chapter’s book club – we’re reading The Traitor’s Wife by Allison Pataki.
Later this spring we have planned a craft night, happy hour, movie night, beer
tasting, game night, a visit to the Getty museum, and our annual wine and cheese
party where we welcome recent graduates to our alumnae sisterhood. You can

Kappa Chapter’s Senior Class Social—May 18, 2015
Come meet Kappa Chapter’s 35-member Senior class at a special evening
event at Kappa Chapter. We will be welcoming these women into our alumnae chapter and presenting them with graduation gifts. There will be an ice
cream social following the program. We are hoping this event will also be a
great networking opportunity as the graduates search for career opportunities.
NEWS FLASH: Congr atulations to Paula Harfst K’ 84 who was recently selected to be one of Delta Zeta’s
National Membership Specialists! Paula attended the Delta Zeta training session in Atlanta in March.

Founders Day 2014 Highlights
Our combined 2014 Founders Day celebration with Kappa Chapter (University of Washington) was held on
Sunday, October 19th at the University of Washington Botanic Gardens’ Center for Urban Horticulture. There
were 133 Delta Zetas (alumnae and collegians) and several special guests in attendance. Orchestrating this annual event were Founders Day Co-Chairs Joanne Reilly Bushey K’63 and Sue Cassidy McArthur K’63 and
Kappa Chapter’s Alumnae Relations Chair Kim Huynh.
The program consisted of a buffet luncheon, a Founders Day Candle Ceremony honoring our six Founders,
special presentations, musical entertainment, announcements, and numerous awards for alumnae and collegians. Alumnae recognized at Founders Day included: Convention Award--Achoth Award—Susan Cassidy
McArthur K’63; Great Western Area Region Awards--Outstanding GWA Alumnae Sister of the Year—Kim
Saari Johnston K’ 84; Panhellenic Pride Award—Sherill Bunch Brace K’ 51; Collegiate Appreciation
Award (“Unsung Hero” for Kappa Chapter)—Joanne Reilly Bushey K’63 and Susan Cassidy McArthur
K’63; Greater Seattle Alumnae Chapter’s Service Award-- Kim Saari Johnston, Kappa Chapter Centennial Committee Lead; and a new Kappa House Corporation Board Award--Carin Brown Steckler Awar d for
Outstanding Service to Kappa Chapter House Corporation Board—Iris Wuichet Grasst K’85 (This newly
created award was first announced during Kappa Chapter’s Centennial Celebration in May 2014.); Kappa Collegiate Award--Merrily Boone Award---Hadley Evarts. (Note: This collegiate award honors a sister who has
“achieved outstanding chapter participation while still maintaining a high academic standard.” Merrily Fredericks Boone K’ 61 donated her Delta Zeta crest ring to pass along to each year’s recipient. Numerous other
collegiate awards were also presented with much enthusiasm!)
Jennifer Russell Nielsen K 01, Vir ginia Handy Memor ial Chair , made a pr esentation fr om Gr eater Seattle Alumnae Chapter to Kappa House Corporation Board President Erika Hedahl Cottrell K’89 and Kappa
Chapter President Emma Shepanek. The Alumnae Board voted to make a $2,000 grant from two of their special funds to support the urgent upgrades needed for Kappa Chapter’s internet and wifi equipment.
Membership honorees celebrating their milestone anniversaries with us included: Judy Brozovich Harris K’64,
Marylin Crandall Hanson GE’64, Erika Hedahl Cottrell K’ 89, Meagan Macdonnell Farrell DA’89,
Shellie Littrel Sturmer P ’89, Meggen Seitz Gladue K’04, Janet Phan K’04, and Laura Senn Richardson
K’04. Each shared a short personal story from their college experiences or as an alumna.
As part of our Founders Day philanthropy project, alumnae and collegians donated over 100 pounds of non-perishable food items and also donated $100 to the University District Food Bank. Our Philanthropy
Chair Chelsea Olson K’08 and several collegians delivered our donations to the food bank.
Paula Harfst K’ 84 and Kim Saari Johnston K’84 volunteered last October to be our Founders Day Co-Chairs for 2015. Thank

Toy Drive Highlights
Our 14th annual Toy Drive for the Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center held dur ing October and November 2014 was a gr eat success!!
Thank you to all who participated in this philanthropy project by
providing gifts to the 43 children on our gift list. Monetary donations
from alumnae totaled $510 for the Toy Drive Fund which provided
for 20 gifts, with the rest of the gifts graciously donated by 15 alumnae and Kappa Chapter. Our annual Gift Wrapping Party & Holiday
Social was held on November 23rd at Kappa Chapter with 25 gift
wrappers in attendance, including nine collegians.
Hats off to the members of our Toy Drive Committee who kept this
tradition alive! These included: Ashley Bozeman K’10, Jennifer Russell Nielsen K’01, Sara Fergusson
K’02, Joanne Reilly Bushey K’63, Chelsea Olson K’08 along with other sisters and family members who
lent a helping hand.
In connection with the Holiday Social, Alumnae President Ellyn Hartung Sewell K’66 recognized Diana Fergusson K’00 and Sara Fergusson K’02. Both sisters received Great Western Area’s 2014 Alumnae Appreciation Award (“Unsung Heroes” for Greater Seattle) at Region Weekend.
Overlake Alumnae Panhellenic Scholarship Luncheon
Sahalee Country Club was the venue for this annual scholarship luncheon on December 4, 2014. Several Delta Zetas and their guests joined
their panhellenic sisters at this holiday social and fundraising event. This
event raised $3,600 for their 2015 scholarship program which benefits
local high school women graduates who will be attending a college or
university this fall with a Greek system.
NORTHERN NEVADA
Northern Nevada alumnae collect new and used Christmas cards for
Blue Star Mothers to send to U.S. troops. Diane Teel Wood (Iota

Nu) and Roxie Owen Naphan (Epsilon
Xi) gathered some at the
February meeting.
SAN DIEGO
The San Diego Chapter joined the Gamma Omicron Chapter for an SDSU Homecoming tailgate in November.
In December, we joined San Diego Alumnae
Panhellenic for the annual holiday luncheon
where we were entertained by a wonderful
choir and dined family style on delicious Italian
entrees.
In February, we joined San Diego Alumnae
Panhellenic for a tour at the Women’s Museum
of California for a wonderful exhibit followed
by a delicious lunch.
This Spring, we look forward to attending the
SDSU collegiate’s annual Rose Gala, Region
Day, and our chapter’s annual Senior Send-Off.

San Fernando
The San Fernando Alumnae Chapter created a team to participate in Pi Gamma’s Fall Turtle Tug event
and had lots of fun interacting with the collegiate. We hosted our annual Nuts Sale this Fall and monies
were donated to Starkey Foundation. At our Annual Holiday Party we put together 64 Hygiene Bags that
we donated to Hope Heals Hearts. During the Spring some of our members attended Flame Fantasy at
Santa Anita Race Track where the weather was a balmy 80 degrees. We have a Wine Tasting event
scheduled for April and in May we celebrate Pi Gamma’s Senior Send Off, the chapters anniversary and
Installation of Alumna Officers. Our final event is in June where we host our Membership Drive.

Phoenix
Our Phoenix alumnae chapter has had a busy year so
far. Our first sisterhood event of the year was a
luncheon where we played DZ bingo and then
joined the 86 Pi Zeta chapter new members where
we treated them to an ice cream social.
Many alumnae attended and helped at the Pi Zeta
chapter’s Gala dinner event during parents weekend.
National President, Diane Stecher was the keynote
speaker.
We celebrated Founders Day with our Pi Zeta chapter at ASU’s secret garden. The Pi Zeta chapter
hosted the alumnae with a lovely garden party.
Fall also found us playing bunko with our Pi Beta Phi sisters for a fun night.
Collegiates and alumnae celebrated the holidays at our annual Teddy Bear Tea. It is our custom to donate
Teddy Bears to the Phoenix Fire Department through Phoenix Panhellenic. The fire fighters use them to comfort children in crisis situations. This year DZs donated a record 132 teddy bears.
In January, Phoenix alumnae and collegiates volunteered with Phoenix Panhellenic at the Waste Management
Open to earn scholarships for Greek women in Arizona. We help at the concession stands to earn scholarship
dollars. This year $25,000 in scholarships will be awarded and we hope several DZ’s will be on the list.
Through out the year, the alumnae group has hosted several sisterhood socials where alums can pop in and
out between 4:30-6:30 pm. Another popular event is our lunch bunch who get together for lunch and visiting
with sisters. We have found these events to be popular in getting to know our sisters and keeping in touch.
In February we hosted our “Turtles and Pearls” luncheon where we honored our Pearl, Golden Roses and our
graduating seniors from our Pi Zeta chapter at ASU. We enjoyed lunch, sisterhood and a fun photo booth.

Northern Nevada
This new chapter, chartered on August 11, 2014, is going strong as we connect with more sisters in the
Reno/Carson City area. We have had a variety of activities in several different venues in order to reach
them: a Founders Day gathering at an Irish Tea Room (October) and a Holiday luncheon (December) in
Reno, a luncheon and visit to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City (February), and upcoming in
April are a tour of the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City and a fun Picasso & Wine outing in Reno. Summer meetings proposed are a visit to an historical estate at Lake Tahoe as well as a trip to Genoa, Nevada's oldest settlement.
Recent philanthropy projects include collecting Christmas cards for Blue Star Mothers, and donating
family-movie DVDs and donuts for the waiting room at the Cleft Palate Clinic at the University of Nevada-Reno. Several alums will make pillows for The Painted Turtle Camp.
Participation in Northern Nevada Alumnae Panhellenic is also on our calendar. Delta Zeta is represented on NNAP's four major committees: International Badge Day in March, a fundraiser in June, the Seniors Luncheon, and Communication.
We are off to a good start and look forward to growing our membership in the months ahead. Although
Delta Zeta was not selected as the new sorority on the UNR campus last year, we now have three years
to develop a strong chapter so we are truly ready to support future collegiate sisters.

West Inland Empire
West Inland Empire collected bears at our December meeting to donate to the Grin 'N Bear It program in
Phoenix. We collected approximately 13 bears to donate. In February we hosted National Vice President of Alumnae, Karen Campbell, and Foundation Trustee, Nancy Russell, at our meeting to provide
updates on a National level. We enjoyed participating in the Southern California Lamplighters Flame
Fantasy event at the Santa Anita Racetrack where we handled the Mystery Gifts and donated a Gift Card
Board to the silent auction. Coming up this summer is a swim party along with our regular meeting
schedule. Our roster has grown to 28 members in the past year. Hooray!!!
