Ft Wayne, IN 46845-1170 Dear Mr. Funk, I have been informed that my scholarship monies to attend Great Lakes Boat Building School have come from the Antique & Classic Boat Society, including several regional chapters. For that support, I am extremely thankful and without the said support, I would not be a Great Lakes Boat Building School student. My two major areas of interest in the Marine Trade are Restoration and Sailing Craft. On a micro level I have done several wooden restoration projects (usually furniture, some toys). I always find great satisfaction in the process of learning what was done, hopefully why it was done, and then redoing it so that its functional and aesthetic purposes can be preserved. On a macro level, I am enamored maritime history, specifically as it pertains to the growth of the fishing industry. I am particularly fond of the Skipjacks and their role in shaping the Chesapeake Bay; while at the same time I am concerned about their decline, and what the loss of that history would mean to the future of the bay. Consequently, I have become very aware of the value of the maritime museums that seek to encapsulate both the historical value of wooden boats while promoting them as art (e.g., Calvert Marine Museum). While I have always had an interest in boating, and even having owned a few, I spent most of my life merely appreciating only the aesthetic value of a sail craft. All that changed when I took the opportunity to learn how to build a 12 ft. Sailing Skiff at Calvert Marine Museum. Since then, I have had several opportunities to sail on larger vessels (wooden sailboats of course), and since then I have understood that wooden boat construction and restoration is where the blue collar man trapped in a white collar world for the last 18 years needs to be. So again, I thank you for enabling me to capitalize on this opportunity. Kind Regards, Erin Carlin cc. Joyce and Tom ran a boat restoration shop and marina in Port Huron before moving the business to Georgia. Back in the 80’s the Neffs took over the running of the Port Huron Boat Show and continued to support the show for a good number of years. She was a great organizer and used those talents to lead a number of us on boat trips to New York, the Muskokas, and even up the Rideau to Ottawa. Many of our early Chapter workshops were held at the Neff’s home on the Black River in Port Huron. In recent years they would trailer a boat to our Chapter cruises and an occasional Michigan show. Joyce organized a local show for Georgia’s Blue Ridge chapter on Lake Sinclair. She was a steady helper in Ship Stores at Mt. Dora. One of her talents was to pick the perfect name for the family’s boats; “Autumn Embers”, “Synchronicity”, “Northern Reflection”, “We’re Lovin It” and the little racer” Buzzing Around” were just a few. She will be missed by many friends from Canada to Florida, leaving lots of memories of a genuinely nice person. Donations can be made to The Great Lakes Boat Building School, in Cedarville, MI in Joyce’s name. So it is time to prepare for riding in boats, boat shows, rendezvous, and enjoying the warm weather. Over the winter, Don Kiddle has been working hard on collecting all our history, from pictures, to board meetings and even old Channel Markers. He is compiling an electronic data history. Thank you Don, for all your hard work! I have seen some of the information collected and it is very interesting. If you have any old club pictures or other memorabilia you would like to share, please let Don or I know. Don, along with Wayne Eversole and Erv Breitkreuz, helped out tremendously in filling voids where we did not have enough workers at the Cobo Hall Boat Show exhibit. Thank you guys! One more thank you, to Pat Chaps, for organizing the winter workshops at the Algonac Clay Historical Museum. I hope to keep the club working side by side with the museum, as the history of Algonac is so important to our hobby. This year, at our 30th Annual boat show, we are offering rides in members’ boats for a $5.00 donation to KIDS (Kids in Distress Services), a local charity that helps children and teens that have been removed from their homes and placed in foster care for whatever reason. They provide essential items for the kids, as they don’t usually take anything with them when they are removed. KIDS also helps children of families who have lost their homes to disaster. Please consider supporting our efforts to help this group that serves St. Clair and parts of Sanilac and Macomb counties. We have a very busy schedule this summer, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at one of our club’s events. Until then, clean, paint, and varnish your boats, so they will be ready for all the fun. Ann Guldemond, Commodore The training wheels are off. This is my first solo issue as your new editor. I would like to thank everyone who sent me “first boat” articles. I had great fun reading them. The response was so wonderful that we are considering adding some to the website. Please keep them coming. Our printer and I are working very hard to rectify the problem we have been having with the staples not holding. Apparently the issue is not the staples themselves but the paper. It seems that the higher the quality of paper the more brittle it is on the crease. We apologize and are doing our best to find the right combination of print quality and durability. Summer boating season is just around the corner. It’s important to remember to review the equipment checklist, safety checklist and the engine maintenance checklist. Will you examine your lifejackets, fenders, lines, flares, and first aid kit? Is your fire extinguisher charged and up to date? Did you change the oil and oil filter, examine the sparkplugs and wires. Is your fuel pump leaking, blower working and navigation lights operable? Do you need to change the water impeller? This is a very short list of reminders. If you own a cruiser your list is longer and more complicated. If you trailer, then you have a whole different list including bearings, tires, trailer lights, safety chains, and more. Take some time this spring and pay attention to your maintenance so you have a safe and enjoyable summer. Nothing ruins a great day on the water more than drifting helplessly waiting for a tow because something simple was neglected and broke. Now, go forth and boat! I grew up on the Kawkawlin River in Bay City, Michigan so I was always messing about on the water with my pals. When I was 11 years old my dad replaced our cedar back porch with a concrete one. Now, that pile of old cedar intrigued me and my pal Bob Stringer to no end. “What can we make with it?” Not surprising the idea of a small race boat came to mind. Bob was 2 years older than me and he had some ideas about building a boat as he had previously helped his dad build 2 small boats. We started out by drawing plans for a simple boat that resembled a sled or a rectangular cement mixing box with one end squared off for a motor. We built the cedar frames but had no wood for stringers to assemble them. My dad, seeing our plans and progress, knew the owner of the Bay City Boat Co. that built kit boats for resale and purchased the white oak needed for chines, clamps and battens. When we had the framework assembled he purchased 2 sheets of 1/4” marine plywood. The bottom took 1 full sheet without cutting it. The 2nd went to the sides, deck and transom. We set the transom about 8” in from the end of the plywood to form a planing surface past the motor. I can’t remember how we reinforced the transom for an outboard. Well, we finally finished the boat and launched it --- and no leaks. My dad must have been so proud of our accomplishment that he bought me a used 1947 5 hp Sea King for $60.00 from Kriewall’s Marina. Wow--that little boat skimmed across the water at 17-20 mph---but it seemed like 50 to me. Two years later Bob and I went big time, for us, and built an 11’ class “B” stock race boat out of Science and Mechanics magazine they called the “Blue Streak”. My dad followed through on that boat also by supplying all the wood, screws and finally a used 10 hp Mercury Lightning which pushed it over 35 mph. Bob’s dad kept us heading in the right direction on both boats by giving us a lot of invaluable advice. Oh, what a way to get into boating---and what memories. I am sure this early experience has a lot to do with why I have since completed the renovation of a 1941 16’ Chris Craft deluxe runabout and why I am currently working on the restoration of a 1946 Garwood Ensign. It will be a three day event with a lunch cruise and welcome party on Friday, the judged show on Saturday, boat parade after the show and cruise with brunch to the Old Club on Sunday morning. In addition to the usual show events we’ve planned some new activities, including a tour of Algonac Cast Products Friday morning, special speakers on Saturday as well as a shuttle running to interesting sights in town and the Algonac Historical Society throughout the day on Saturday. Saturday after the show the Algonac Historical Society will be coordinating a boat parade. We’ll leave the Harbour Club, run down past downtown Algonac then cruise slowly past the park downtown. There will also be a dinner Saturday evening at the Historical Society. New for 2015 will be a charity event. The Michigan Chapter will be supporting the “Kid’s in Distress” Charity. Read about them elsewhere in this Channel Marker. Anyone registering to display a boat in the show can volunteer to provide boat rides along a preset route to those who donate to the charity and would like a ride in an antique boat. This event not only will support the charity but provide great exposure for our club and hobby. We have chosen "Blondes have more fun” to be our theme this year. Blonde decked boats of any year and manufacturer are the Marque Boat for this year. There will be a separate Marque Boat award. Judging categories will be about the same as 2014 with eleven categories. All of the registered boat owners will also receive a Captain's gift as a memento of the event. A complete registration package is included in this Channel Marker. The same documentation is also available on the Michigan Chapter ACBS website. www.michacbs.com You may notice that while we’ve added extra events this year for the most part we’ve held our entry fees constant or in some cases reduced them. In order to be able to do this we hope that you’ll attend as many events as possible. In addition, our sponsors help keep our fees down. Please read through the program and where possible take advantage of our sponsors. When you do so, mention that you heard of them through our Chapter. This helps us keep sponsors and increases their desire to participate. Register early, I look forward to seeing you and your boats “Back to Where it All Began”, at the Algonac Harbour Club. Jeanne Harper 12 CHANNEL MARKER Summer 2015 MICHIGAN CHAPTER Michigan Chapter, ACBS Blue Water Antique & Classic Boat Show River Street Marina - Port Huron Sept. 11-12, 2015 This year's show in Port Huron will be the weekend after Labor Day weekend, September 11 and 12. The show kicks off Friday afternoon with a cruise down the St Clair river to St Clair for dinner. The boat show is Saturday at the River St Marina on the Black River. Again this year, free antique boat rides will be offered from 11 am until 2 pm. This was a huge success last year as more than 200 persons took advantage of the free rides. The theme of the show this year will be race boats and the famous Miss America X will be in attendance on land display. Gar Wood won the 1931 Harmsworth trophy in Miss America IX. Britain knew that it needed a better boat and designed Miss England III. Gar Wood knew he had to come up with a faster boat for the 1932 Harmsworth race. He began in January of 1932 to build a new boat which was to become Miss America X. It was a 38' Mahogany hull with 4 Packard V-12 engines, with 2 in line on the right side and the other 2 in line on the left side. Each pair of engines were directly connected by a gearbox designed by Gar Wood to create in fact a 24 cylinder engine driving a propeller. The engines were supercharged to the limit, consumed a fuel mixture of benzol, alcohol and gasoline and burned 10 gallons per mile. The 4 engines had a combined horsepower of 7600 hp.The completed boat weighed 8 tons. Gar Wood met the British challenge in Miss America X and won the Harmsworth in 1932 and again in 1933. He retired from racing at this point. Between 1920 and 1933, Garwood's boats won every Harmsworth trophy and Gar Wood himself piloted the boats in every race but one. On September 20, 1932 Gar Wood set a new speed record with Miss America X at 124.86 mph. This was the average speed of 2 runs, one upstream and one downstream. The run was conducted on the St Clair River just north of Algonac. Miss America X was painstakingly restored by the Mayea Boat and Aeroplane works of Fairhaven, Michigan. It is owned by Detroit boating enthusiast and historian Mr. Henry Mistele. Registration forms for the Port Huron show are inside this Channel Marker or will be available on the website in late April. The two morning presentations were by Brian Cuthbertson of Cuthbertson Marine, and Matt Pashby of L.L. Johnson. Brian discussed all of all of the things we should check, lubricate, and regularly maintain on our classic watercraft to keep them running like we want them to. He also talked about the good, bad and the evil of fuel additives to avoid performance related issues. I don't think there was anyone in attendance that did not learn something that will become a regular part of their boat maintenance in the future. Matt reviewed the current market and availability of different types of mahogany, white oak, teak and other products used in the construction and restoration of wooden boats. He also gave a demonstration of the Saw Stop table saw that is available at L. L. Johnson. It incorporates a high tech safety brake that can completely stop the saw blade in 3 to 5 milliseconds if it contacts a finger or body part. It also has several user friendly features that make it a very attractive addition to any workshop. After a great pizza and salad lunch with a good amount of member chatter on project status and prepping boats for spring launch, we continued the day with two afternoon presentations. Frank Bauer talked about how he purchased and restored a 1955 21 ft. Chris Craft Cobra. It was one of the few built with the Cadillac V8 engine, and has one of the most unique histories you could imagine. The boat was shipped new to Austria. After many years of use and storage, it was next purchased by a second owner who moved the boat to Switzerland, restored the boat over several years with the addition of a European style maple inlaid deck and several other unique features. The boat finally came back to the US in 2013 when Frank purchased it and had it shipped across the Atlantic. Additional restoration work was done by Katz Marine in New Jersey, and after much trial and tribulation, the boat was shown at the Sunnyland Chapter Lake Dora show in 2014. He hopes to bring the boat to Algonac for our 2015 show for all of us to admire. Sheila Davis was our last presenter and gave us a hands on demonstration of the art of "gold leaf" lettering. Her 25 years of experience in the business was very obvious with the knowledge and technique that she demonstrated. She also talked about the pros and cons of gold leaf vs vinyl appliqués for transom names, and registration numbers. She does all of the lettering work for Antique Boat Center in Cincinnati, and can be contacted through them for any member projects. For the 10 Days of the show we had members on site along with a display of 5 boats. Wayne Eversole displayed his Chris Craft X22, a boat he acquired last summer, two Lyman’s were also in the display. One of the Lyman’s a 1960 19’ Islander inboard, is uniquely fitted out for fishing with only rear steering gauges and operating controls. She was displayed by Jim and Mary Ramsey from Toledo. The second one was a 1956 13 1/2 ‘ Lyman “Ideal” outboard fishing boat named “Sweet P” sporting a beautifully restored 5HP Johnson of the same vintage. The Ramsey Bros. displayed their new 16’ “Baby Dart”, a Gentlemen’s racer, with a modern twist, made with a composite hull and Mahogany overlays insuring it will be enjoyed for generations to come. All of the boats got a lot of attention from boat show attendee’s but this boat attracted the most attention. The fifth boat was a beautifully restored 1974 11’ Boston Whaler “Tender” Model. It has been in the Breitkreuz family since being purchased new from Gasow Marine on the Clinton River in the mid 70’s. Although we had limited space for this show and were unable to take our Ships Stores Trailer, we still had a limited selection of items for sale during show hours. There was also a couple of other wooden boats on display elsewhere in the show. Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” A Grand Craft used in his Music video was one, and we found a very small Mahogany Correct Craft Kiddie ride in their exhibit as well. I think the public enjoyed the time that they spent viewing our boats and we would like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to our Club Members who took time out of their week to man the exhibit. And a special shout out the members who braved the snow, Ice and salty roads to bring their boats out in the middle of the winter to make our display both possible and attractive. Don Kiddle MICHIGAN CHAPTER Summer 2015 CHANNEL MARKER 19 Michigan Chapter’s Display at the 2015 Cottage Life Show at Suburban Showplace in Novi This year’s Cottage Life show, at the Suburban Showplace in Novi, turned out to be the best one we have attended at this venue. This year we were provided with enough space for seven of our boats, including Rick Laenen’s rigged DN Iceboat (appropriate for our February Sub-Zero Michigan weather). This still left plenty of room to walk around and space for a long display table. Several of the boats that were displayed at Novi came directly from the Detroit Cobo Show where we were the previous week. The Ramsey Bros. 16’ Dart; The Lyman Islander, owned by Jim and Marti Ramsey, and Wayne Eversole’s Chris Craft X22, just moved out to the Novi location from downtown Detroit. (See the article on the Cobo Boat show for more information on these boats) Four additional boats joined them to complete the Novi display. One was a nice little 14’ Thompson Outboard, owned by Jim GlotFelty. This boat was well displayed, complete with oars, a period tackle box, fishing pole, and even a well-worn straw fishing hat and Campbell’s soup can for bait! A small Johnson was the power for this nice boat. Second was Pat and Alex Pawluchyk’s 1947 Chris Craft Deluxe Runabout “Survivor” which came over from Windsor, Ont. for the show. This is a boat that Alex saved and was a complete rebuild. Ask Alex about the story behind this restoration next time you see him at one of our Club events. Two more Lyman’s owned by Bill and Joe Jockett rounded out the display, one a 1956 15’ Outboard Runabout, was well done and set up with mid-ship steering and controls. A small storage compartment in the bow was very complimentary. And she was equipped with a nice period 25 HP Johnson Outboard. A beautiful poster display showed the transformation from before and after her restoration. The second Lyman was a 16’ Utility Runabout, a nice little inboard named “Lil Ly” Much Deeper. Unlike her later counterpart, she presented a substantially different appearance. A nice wood framed windshield and a rear facing back seat gave the boat a much different character. I want to thank our members for both taking the time and effort to bring their boats out of their winter homes. You put up with the ice, snow, and salt to bring these treasures to show venues. Without you and the efforts of our other members who take the time to come down and man the displays, provide security, answer questions, and generally talk about and support our Michigan Chapter, we would not have the opportunity to expose our hobby to potential members and the public in general. The staff of the Cottage Life Show were extremely pleased with this year’s display and have tentatively asked us back and promised us even more support for our exhibit. See you next year! Don Kiddle 20 CHANNEL MARKER Summer 2015 MICHIGAN CHAPTER Winter Workshop #2 On Saturday the 14th of March, we did it again, ACBS Michigan Chapter held another workshop in conjunction with the Algonac-Clay Historical Society, at their Marine Museum in downtown Algonac. The weather was cold and the ice was running in the river making it difficult for our Canadian members to get to the Seminar. Although not as crowded as the January workshop, we still had a good crowd on hand for a day of presentations. The morning started out with Brian Cuthbertson giving us lots of tips about some of the lesser known maintenance items that are important for a trouble free boating season. He also went into some of the symptoms that might show up if these items aren’t taken care of properly. He brought a lot of parts so he was able to demonstrate easily what to look for on your particular engine. Next up was Frank Bauer who had an amusing and informative story about his purchase of a Chris Craft Cobra from Switzerland, the history of the boat, and the unique approach to restoration taken overseas. He continued with the process of bringing the boat back to the states, and the additional work that was necessary to prepare the boat so it was ready to run and be displayed at the Cobra Celebration that was a part of the Mt. Dora boat show that occurred in March. The presentation was accompanied with lots of pictures showing the many steps that the boat went through. After a quick lunch of Pizza and Salad, Brian from L. L. Johnson Lumber gave a presentation on their organization, the different types of mahogany and other woods that they carry and other services that they provide. He continued with a discussion and presentation of “Saw Stop” a unique feature on a line of table saws that they carry. If you haven’t seen it, it is quite amazing, the saw has the ability to stop the blade from spinning almost before it even breaks the skin if you happen to get a finger or other part of your body in contact with the blade. It was demonstrated with a hot dog, hardly breaking the casing before the saw stopped. Finally the day’s activities wound up about the middle of the afternoon after an interesting and informative presentation by Shelia Davison how to apply “Gold Leaf” for the names on our boats and for other applications. She made a nice interactive presentation on the process, even handing around samples of the various steps in the process and letting the attendees try parts of it on their own. It was further supported by a slide show that illustrated many of the techniques she discussed as well as pictures of some of the large number of boats that she has worked on.
