PRESIDENT’S NOTES
I am excited about the prospect of having a nice social event for our club members and guests on June 4 th!
As Rotarians, we don’t get together very often outside of our club meetings to socialize and really get to
know one another. This event will give us a great venue, great food and a great opportunity to talk in a
relaxed, comfortable environment.
Within the next day or so, you will each be receiving a communication from our Treasurer, Diane Moomey,
relative to supporting our Community Needs Committee. Attached to that invoice will be a letter from me
explaining why we are asking for your support. Please take a close look at both and help us help our
community. In addition to supporting the great work being done by the Community Needs Committee, we
will be positioning our club to make the Pancake Supper a more sustainable tradition for us through the
purchase of our own grills! I want to once again, acknowledge Mark Bone and Todd Gambrell for their work
on this whole project.
And speaking of projects, I also want to publicly acknowledge the work being done by both the Fundraising
Committee (Jen Chappel) and the Fellowship Committee (Pat Schefsky) around the RiverDays
fundraiser. Both Jen and Pat have been instrumental in getting us organized and in the planning and
preparation for this wonderful opportunity we will have on July 18th. Please save the date on your calendars
and plan on helping us out to support this effort!
I am also excited about this week’s program! Stephanie Leibfritz and the entire Spirit of Rotary Committee
have done an awesome job in selecting three extremely well-qualified candidates for this coveted
recognition. This is more evidence that the work our club is doing is impressive on so many levels!

Financial need. Ability to succeed in chosen
field. Three at $1,200 each.
If you don’t have a My Rotary account, it’s

HERBERT H. HARDY SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarship is specifically for students
pursing public service such as: Public
Administration (city, state), economic
development, law enforcement, firefighters,
paramedics, etc. Financial need. $2,500
Kari Jordan, a junior attending Ferris State
University.
Lindsay Swinson, a senior at Bullock Creek High
School who will be attending Michigan State
University. Lindsay is the daughter of Tammie
and William Swinson.

Rotary Youth Leadership
Awards (RYLA) is a
leadership development
program run by Rotary.
 Participants can be any age, but our district
focuses on secondary school students
particularly the leaders of their junior classes.
 Our district hosts an annual camp at “Camp
Rotary” run by boy scouts and a team of 5-10
active counselors. It is important to us to
provide an atmosphere of trust and respect.
 This year, the event will run June 14-18 and
will have 50-100 students.
 Throughout the week there are a variety of
presentations, activities, and workshops that
cover several topics, including:
 Rotary’s purpose of service to the
community and world
 Leadership fundamentals and ethics
 Communication skills
 Problem solving and conflict
management
 Community and global citizenship
 Building Self Esteem and Self
Confidence

Four Countries Meet to Tackle Malaria

Kenya
On 3 April, we hosted a malaria prevention
program in Kisumu, Kenya, as part of the third
year of Rotaract East Africa Impact (REACT).
The project is a multi-district initiative that
brings together Rotaract clubs from throughout
Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.
malaria. Though doctors made frantic efforts
to resuscitate him through blood transfusion
and lifesaving anti-malaria medication, he
died. Yet we know malaria is a totally
preventable and curable disease. His was a
preventable death.
More than 100 members from 19 different
Rotaract clubs across these countries travelled to
the lakeside city to make a difference in the
informal settlement of Nyalenda. A story is told
of a young boy who was four years old and had
many dreams ahead of him. One evening, the
boy developed fevers and refused to eat. Though
his mother had a premonition about it, she
decided to brush it aside. The preceding week,
her other two children, a boy and girl, developed
fevers and had reduced appetites but their
symptoms had resolved on their own.
Our project took many months of planning
and coordination between the Rotaract clubs
and their parent Rotary clubs, event sponsors,
county governments, venues, community
stakeholders and the community at large. After
brief introductory remarks, members divided
into teams to clear blocked drainages ditches
that are a breeding ground for mosquitoes, to
distribute insecticide treated nets, and to
educate households on malaria prevention.
Rotary and Rotaract clubs continue to change
lives in communities with the hope that the
lives and dreams of young boys like the one
above are not cut short by preventable
diseases.
The boy, however, did not improve and within
two days had lost consciousness. He was
subsequently rushed to the local hospital where
he was diagnosed with severe anemia caused by
