Carol Ireton Jones, PhD, RDN, LD, CNSC, FASPEN, FAND Personalized Medicine: Nutrigenomics and Weight Management Nutritional genomics is the term for how nutrients and genes (DNA) interact and are expressed to reveal phenotypic outcomes, including disease risk. New research has shown that we can assess an individual’s DNA to determine what kind of nutrition is best for them. Recent studies demonstrate the application of personalized nutrition using specialized genetic testing, and its effect on weight management and disease outcomes. Other applications of this DNA test may also be possible as research expands. Today’s talk will focus on a new and individualized approach to weight loss and weight management. Lise Alschuler, ND, FABNO Preserving Intrinsic Apoptosis with Antioxidants for Cancer Prevention Our health and wellbeing are under constant challenge by the oxidatively stressful world that we live in. Left unchecked, oxidative stress initiates DNA and mitochondrial damage leading to chronic diseases such as cancer. The first and last defense against oxidative damage is antioxidation. The relationship between the redox potential of the cell, and in particular of the mitochondrial membrane, with intrinsic apoptosis and cancer prevention will be explored. A rationale for restoring healthy redox with glutathione and plant-derived flavonoids will be made. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the key elements of a flavonoid- and glutathione-rich lifestyle. Jessica A. Miller, PhD Nutrimetabolomics and Cancer Prevention The metabolome has been defined as the sum of all low molecular weight metabolites or chemicals present in a cell, organ, tissue, biological fluid or organism. Metabolic profiling experiments are typically conducted using nuclear magnetic resonance or mass spectrometry coupled to either liquid chromatography or gas chromatography. Metabolomics research can be untargeted (hypothesis generating) or targeted to characterize a specific class of metabolites or metabolites involved in a particular biochemical pathway. Metabolomics offers the opportunity to elucidate causal mechanisms that link exposure to altered systemic metabolism and health outcomes. Glen Weiss, MD, MBA Precision Medicine in Oncology We are in an era of rapid information dissemination and improved understanding of complex biological processes. Technologic advances and gene sequencing cost reductions have propelled the field of oncology to quickly integrate “omics”-based precision medicine into clinical research and clinical practice. This talk will provide an overview of some of the considerations one should be aware of related to “omics”-based medicine in oncology and how these tools are being applied now in clinical research that will begin to inform clinical practice.
