How does DCCS help?
Derriford Children's Cancer Service was established to
enhance the care, support, and facilities provided for
children undergoing treatment for cancer, and their
families, which are not available through statutory funding
or other charitable bodies.

Funding decisions are made by Dr Myooren Wimalendra,
Consultant Paediatrician with special responsibility for
paediatric oncology and his team, which includes medical
and nursing staff, lead nurse, play-specialists, social worker
and clinical psychologist.


The team works very closely with the children and families,
developing strong "partnerships in care". Who better, then,
to know their needs, than the Health Care Professionals and
families working alongside each other.
The needs of children with cancer are often immediate. The
DCCS fund can respond to that immediacy, often on the same
day. That is what makes the real difference to the child
and his or her family.
" The equipment we needed may have sounded trivial to
others but is was so important to enable us to keep things as
normal as possible for Sally. It was delivered to us the same
day". Sally's Mum.


The existence of the DCCS fund means that the oncology
team can plan for the future by developing and providing the
services that are needed.
New Developments
Clinical Psychologist
The Psychologist’s role is to support, children, their siblings
and families who are struggling emotionally with the
experience of having cancer. The Psychologist is part of the
multi-disciplinary team and involved in thinking about the
experiences of children and families alongside other team
members as well as attending clinics. The emotional impact
of childhood cancer cannot, and should not, be
underestimated. The family journey from diagnosis, through
treatment, to remission or through bereavement can, at
times, be intensely difficult for families to manage. The
Psychologist works directly with children and their families to
help them to cope with difficulties that may arise along their
cancer journey.
Derriford Children's Cancer Service exists to
provide additional care and support for
children and adolescents with cancer, and their
families, which is not available from any other
source. It also supports and raises the level of
knowledge and expertise of all those caring for
the family and the child with cancer.
