Volunteer Recognition and
Senior of the Year 2015
Congratulations Janet Nezgoda
2015 Senior of the Year!
On May 1, 2015 Ed Roth,
Chairman of the Milford
Council on Aging presented
Janet with the Tony Grillo
Senior of the Year citation.
Additionally, Janet received
citations presented by our
U.S. Congressman, State
Senator, State Representative, Worcester County Sheriff and
Milford Selectmen.
Sue Clark, Director of the Senior Center presented President’s
Award certificates on behalf of the Friends of the Milford Senior
Center. Congratulations to Joe Donaher, Marie DiCampo and
Robin Fletcher for their dedication and volunteer services.
About Janet...Janet Nezgoda volunteers in our Treasure Chest
Gift Shop and has been volunteering at the senior center for
nearly 10 years. Janet loves people so having the opportunity to
chat and socialize with seniors as they browse for gifts for their
loved ones is a great way for her to spend her time. Janet has a
long history of volunteerism even prior to being a senior herself.
In her former hometown of Niantic, CT Janet volunteered for the
town library and the church for many years.
Janet was born in 1924 in Easthampton, MA where she graduated from high school in 1942. In 1946, Janet married and had
2 children. She and her family lived in Niantic, CT until about
18 years ago when Janet moved to Milford to be closer to her
daughter in Hopedale who was just starting her own family.
Janet has a full, fun and busy life. She’s a firm believer in
exercise and swims 5 days a week. Janet was an avid tennis
player since a teenager and only stopped playing tennis about
15 years ago. Janet loves playing Bridge and is happy to boast
she is a Senior Master with the ACBL and has traveled as far as
Bermuda to play in Bridge tournaments with the professionals!
Janet is very grateful to be a 30 year cancer survivor which she
proudly tells people in order to inspire hope. Janet’s positive,
sunny, and upbeat outlook on life is not only inspirational but a
pleasure to be around. Thank you, Janet for your volunteer
services.

A special “Thank You” to
Ann Mauricio for her 11
years of volunteer service.
Ann has been instrumental
in managing the input of
our service and program
activities; she has worked
endless hours on projects
including recording the
minutes of the COA
meetings. Her ability to
speak fluent Spanish made her a valuable asset to our
Spanish speaking seniors. We wish her the very best
as she leaves here to enjoy her Cape Cod home. We
will miss you very much and truly appreciate all you
have done for us.
If you don’t already know Janet, please stop by the Treasure
Chest Gift Shop and take a moment to say hello.

Society and the Senior Class President. Her commitment to the Senior Center was greatly appreciated.
The entire staff would like to wish Veronica the very
best as she enters Dean College in the fall.

NEWS FROM SHINE – Medicare Appeals
If you have Medicare, you have the right to appeal decisions you disagree with. All steps in the appeal
process have specific time frames and other requirements. It is very important to pay attention to the time
limits for appeals!
Some appealable situations are:





Medicare denies your request for a health care service, supply, or prescription
Medicare denies payment for health care that you have already received
Medicare stops covering services that you are receiving
Medicare pays a different amount than you believe it should
Medicare drug plan denies coverage of your medication
For assistance with appeals, the Medicare Advocacy Project (MAP) provides free advice and legal representation. MAP can
assist anyone with Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan, regardless of income. For assistance from MAP, call the
Massachusetts Senior Legal Helpline at 866-778-0939. For more information on Medicare Appeals go to our website
www.shinema.org and view our latest “Medicare and More” Program.
The Central Mass SHINE Program Staff and our Counselors wish all of our Seniors a very safe and enjoyable summer.
Our next newsletter will be out for September.
Trained SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) volunteers can help you! They offer free, unbiased, confidential
counseling on all aspects of health insurance to anyone on Medicare. Call your senior center and ask for a SHINE appointment.
You can also call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave
your name and number. A volunteer will call you back. You can now visit us on the internet at www.shinema.org.
DRUG DROPOFF
You may drop off your unused/expired prescription drugs at the Milford Police Station lobby in a red vault. The police
department will then dispose of them through the drug enforcement agency.
