At-A-Glance November/December
At the October 20th Town Meeting Selectman Brian Murray
proposed an article to appropriate $75,000 for the purpose
of finishing an unused room on the second floor of the
Senior Center and converting it into a Fitness Center. Town
Meeting Members voted unanimously to make this happen.

Election Day
This is a great day at the Senior Center. As many of you
know fitness is a major component of the activities happening here. Now we will have the space we need to make it
happen. No more wondering what room will we be in today!
The goal will be to incorporate more fitness classes into the
schedule to meet the needs of all the seniors that currently
visit and those thinking about visiting. If there is a special
class that you would like to see happen give me a call and
let’s see if we can make that work.
This is just the first step in transforming the Senior Center
into a wellness center. The plans for the future will be to offer programs and workshops on matters that will help keep
you healthy in mind, body and spirit.
A special thank you to all Town Officials and Town Meeting
Members that supported our vision of making fitness a
priority.

SENIOR EXPO
On October 16th the Center held a Senior Expo and Free Flu
Clinic; thanks to all the vendors that came out to support
this event. Special thanks to Salmon VNA for holding the
flu clinics and to all the volunteers that assisted in making
this event a tremendous success. Over 30 door prizes were
supplied by the vendors. Congratulations to those that won
the prizes.

JURY DUTY
FUEL ASSISTANCE (SMOC)
If you are 70 years or older, you can choose not
to serve on jury duty. The juror confirmation
form must be filled out with your birth date and
sent back. If you are younger than 70 and physically or mentally incapable of serving, a note
must be written by your doctor. If you have any
questions or need help with the process, please
call Catherine at 508-473-8334.
Application for the year 2014 and 2015 begins

There are many quality items available for reasonable prices. Donations of new or gently used items are
welcomed. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept
donations of used clothing.
Please read this warning from Office of Elder
Affairs. An elder received a phone call from
“Medicare”. A very well spoken caller claimed
they had “sent her a letter” prior to a doctor
coming to her house to ensure the proper services
were being provided. The caller wanted to send
Dr. “X” to her house the following day.
BJ’S MEMBERSHIPS
The elder said “this didn’t sound right” and felt
very uncomfortable, but the caller gave her a
phone number for verification. When she hung
up, she called the Medicare number on her card
(1-800-633-4227) and was told it was a scam…
and that when they got to her house they would
more than likely try to sell her insurance products. Do not be fooled by these scams. Please call
the Senior Center or police if you think it doesn’t
sound right.

A LESSON LEARNED
My mom was a good cook but she was very frugal
as dad’s job was seasonal and she could not afford
to waste anything. My job when she was cooking
was to help clean up. So when I got married, I had
never cooked a thing. One day I decided to make
BLTs, how hard could that be. Little did I know
that you didn’t have to grease the pan before cooking bacon. Needless to say, it was floating in
grease. My new husband was so sweet and ate the
greasy bacon without a word.

old Bubbe and she was me….whoa….where did I

In just an hour or two a week you can provide information

Reach out in Your Community.. By visiting an elderly
neighbor as a Friendly Visitor or as a Companion Volunteer by providing transport and escort to medical appointments, errands or out for lunch or coffee together. This
support makes an important difference in an elder’s day.

New Caregiver’s Guide Available… the newly revised
2014 Caregiver’s Guide is now available. This free guide is
meant to be a tool for those providing care for older adults
and offer education on programs, supports and resources
available in the Central Massachusetts region. The Caregiver’s Guide is a free publication, funded in part through a
grant from the Tufts Health Plan Foundation. For more

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT UPDATE MEETING – PLAN YEAR 2015
The Medicare Open Enrollment ends on December 7th! Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late!
Make a SHINE Appointment Now!
Every year, Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage (HMO, PPO) plans can change their premiums, co-pays, deductibles, formularies (list of drugs covered) and preferred pharmacies. It’s
important to review your options EVERY year to make sure you have the plan that works best
for you for next year.
Assistance is available from the SHINE program. Call your Senior Center and ask for a SHINE appointment.
Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of health insurance to anyone on Medicare. You may also contact Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE. Their customer service is available 7 days a
week 24 hours a day.
“SHINE’S MEDICARE AND MORE” PROGRAM
The Central MASS SHINE Program is now sponsoring a monthly Cable TV program called “SHINE’s MEDICARE
AND MORE”, we hope your local cable channel will pick it up. This program is designed to educate and update
MEDICARE beneficiaries and their families on MEDICARE and other programs that can assist you with your health
insurance needs. If you don’t see it on your local cable channel give them a call and ask about it.
CENTRAL MASS SHINE WEBSITE
The Central Mass Region has recently launched its website. You can visit us on the web at www.shinema.org. Our
site has valuable general information and links to other agencies that can assist you with your insurance needs.
Trained SHINE (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) volunteers can help you! They offer free,
unbiased, confidential counseling on all aspects of health insurance to anyone on Medicare. Call your senior
center and ask for a SHINE appointment. You can also call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or
say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you
back. During Open Enrollment it may take a couple of days to return your call. You can now visit us on the
internet at shinema.org
NEWS FROM OUTREACH
Our Client Services Coordinator, Catherine G. Ziesmer, LSW, is available to help with problems you may be
experiencing. She provides information and referral as well as assistance with applications for SNAP (food stamps) and
Mass Health. She is trained in the SMART 911 program, a system that shares vital personal and medical information
with response teams in the event of an emergency. Catherine works on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Drop by or call

TRANSPORTATION NEWS (did you know…)
We provide medical transportation, grocery shopping, and miscellaneous errands within
Milford for all eligible Milford residents. We also provide medical transportation to eligible
Hopedale residents. Hopedale residents must call Hopedale Senior Center to arrange for a
ride. Out-of-Town medical transportation is for specialist doctors only, and is on a limited
basis. Please call our transportation coordinator, Marie O’Leary for more information.
Community Legal Aid (Legal Assistance)
Community Legal Aid provides free legal services to elders and low-income individuals who
qualify for services. To apply for services, dial (855) CLA-LEGAL / (855) 252-5342 during the
following hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. or
Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:15 p.m. You can also apply online at www.communitylegal.org.
SPECIAL NOTE: Effective July 2014, Community Legal Aid WILL NO LONGER hold regular office hours at the
Bleakney Senior Center.

The Friends is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide funds for programs, services and equipment for the Ruth Anne Bleakney
Senior Center which cannot be provided by local or state government. Milford seniors do not need to join the Friends to receive services from the
Senior Center.
Membership is open to all regardless of age or residency. A membership is $5 per year. Out-of-town members may subscribe to The Elder Milfordian for
an additional $5 per year to cover the postage. Annual membership expires June 30th of each year but can be renewed at any time.
Please consider making a donation to the Friends in memory of a loved one or in honor of a special occasion. An acknowledgment of your donation will
be sent to whomever you designate and will be published in The Elder Milfordian.
