Job Description: Fishery Outreach Manager – Scandinavia & Baltic Sea Region Location: Stockholm, Sweden Working language: Swedish (Scandinavian) and English Responsible to: Country Manager Scandinavia and Baltic Region Responsible for: Scandinavia and the Baltic Region Salary: Market and experience conform. MSC offers a contributory pension scheme and a Death in Service insurance benefit equal to four times annual salary. Employees which successfully completed the probation period are entitled to join a pension scheme. Working hours: 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday. The MSC supports flexible working, so the pattern of hours may vary according to operational and personal needs. Weekend work may be required periodically and international travel is a regular feature of the job. No overtime is payable however, under certain circumstances, Time Off in Lieu is granted. Holiday: 30 days per annum, plus statutory holidays. Carry over entitlement of up to a maximum of five days per annum. JOB SUMMARY The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a global not for profit organisation, established in 1999 to address the problem of unsustainable fishing and to ensure healthy oceans for the future. Our mission is to use our ecolabel and fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood, and working with our partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis. Reporting to the Country Manager Scandinavia and Baltic Region, the Fisheries Outreach Manager is responsible for outreach to stakeholders in the fishing sector (producer organisations, fishing associations, relevant governmental and research institutions, NGOs) in Scandinavia. The primary focus is on increasing support for the MSC programme across this broad range of stakeholders and promoting the MSC concept and certification programme to fishing companies. The position supports fishing companies during the MSC fishery assessment process and following fishery certification. Additional tasks will include research and analysis on certified fisheries globally and the Scandinavian fishing sector, understanding target fisheries and their links with supply chain companies, as well as briefing the MSC teams in Scandinavia and elsewhere on questions relating to fisheries in Scandinavia. The job holder will be part of the MSC’s Scandinavia and Baltic Region team and will participate in the collective strategic planning and development of the organization in the region. B. RESPONSIBILITIES The work of the Fishery Outreach Manager is linked to MSC’s overarching objectives of: Ensuring the credibility of the MSC Getting certified product to market Maintaining and building strategic relationships with the MSC’s stakeholders Increasing awareness of the MSC Maintaining quality internal systems and processes Ensuring financial security and sustainability of the MSC Specific responsibilities include: Promote the MSC’s fishery certification programme to stakeholders in the fishing industry, such as producer organisations, fishing associations, relevant governmental and research institutions, and NGOs in Scandinavia and the Baltic Region, with the aim of increasing the number of participating fisheries and boosting support for the MSC programme. Conduct outreach and provide support to fisheries in the MSC programme in Scandinavia and the Baltic Region. This will include conducting training on the MSC programme and assisting fisheries in each stage of the MSC’s fisheries assessment process and after certification. Liaise with certifiers as needed to ensure sound service to their fishery clients participating in the MSC programme. Research and understand relevant commercial details about target fisheries, such as product forms, supply chains, markets, key commercial buyers, and use that understanding to inform priorities and create leverage for moving fisheries into certification or improvement projects Work with the MSC’s communications teams to support the development of promotional and training material for fisheries and of webpages dedicated to fisheries. Provide feedback on the applicability of the MSC’s Certification Requirements for fisheries to the Standards team to help shape the further development of the fisheries standard. Provide oral and written advice through briefings, submissions and reports to MSC regional and other staff as needed. Provide monthly and quarterly reporting against agreed work plans and to funders, and additional reporting as may be required. Any other duty as directed by the Line Manager. C. PERSON SPECIFICATION: SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Commercial / Technical Relevant postgraduate degree in fisheries science or fisheries management 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in fisheries management, research, advocacy or consultancy Demonstrated knowledge of fisheries and resource sustainability issues, particularly as they relate to wild capture fisheries and/or the seafood industry. Good understanding of the role of eco-labelling. Proficient computer skills, including the use of standard software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Knowledge of MSC Standards an advantage Stakeholder Oriented Proven track record of working with stakeholders from different backgrounds - preferably in the commercial and/or fishing sectors - with often diverging views, with the aim of winning their support. Demonstrated awareness of cultural differences and sensitivity to the diversity of values, views and approaches to issues relevant to the MSC programme, and an ability to deal with them effectively.
