President’s Message
Dear Members,
After nine months of serving as the ASID San Diego Chapter President, it has
been exciting for me to watch our meetings and events, which we planned last
year, unfold. We have had so many wonderful opportunities for all our members to network, promote
their work/products/services, learn and have fun thanks to our hard working board and committee
members, sponsors and volunteers. Speaking of hard work, I have to give a huge THANK YOU to the
Design Excellence Awards Gala Committee who created such an enjoyable evening May 12th:
Chairperson Dale Monday-Kolins and her committee, Kimberley Hansen, Jill Winninger, Kathy Mays, and
Bertha Hernandez did an outstanding job. The “Destination” theme was “a trip” down to the smallest
details like the boarding pass seat tickets…amazing! A special Thank You to Robert Wright, FASID, for
“piloting” the evening’s ceremony, and the student volunteers, Brooke Williams, Angela Emerson,Theresa
Rickter, Elyse DeMello, and Gerald Bouvia III, for playing the part of flight attendants so well. And, the
evening couldn’t have taken off without the support of our generous sponsors: San Diego Magazine,
Winfield Floor & Window Covering, San Diego Hardware, Cambria, Design Directions, Jason Holmes
Photography, Design Perspectives and Ferguson Bath & Kitchen Gallery.
We need your help….if you are looking for an easy, yet significantly important way to support our
chapter and help student members, then volunteer for our new Student Speakers List. The ASID San
Diego Chapter supports four student chapters:The Art Institute of San Diego, Design Institute of San
Diego, Mesa College and San Diego State University. Just like our Chapter, Student Chapters have
general meetings and are always in need of knowledgeable speakers who can inform them about their
emerging field, products and/or services (Designers and Industry Partners welcome). If you would like
to participate, contact Kimberley Hansen, our Director of Membership, at [email protected] for
more information.
I hope you had a chance to attend the ASID Conference at NeoCon June 14th – 16th in Chicago. It
was a great opportunity to see the latest design products at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, attend
NeoCon’s educational sessions, and meet other ASID members from around the country at the ASID
conference. Monday night’s ASID Awards Ceremony was a special night for our chapter because Bill
Baker of Winfield Floor & Window Covering received the ASID Industry Partner’s Merit Award, the
Society’s highest honor bestowed upon an Industry Partner Representative. Congratulations Bill! We
are very proud of you.
Designers: don’t miss out on an amazing opportunity to market yourself and showcase your design skills
in the “Designed for Life” – Kitchen and Bath Contest. Participation details are in the “Designed for
Life” email blast or go to the ASID San Diego Chapter Website under ASID San Diego Events &
Committees and click onto the “Designed for Life” logo to download the entry packet.
We are planning a great series of meetings and events under the title of “Connectivity”: July 21st is our
Interior Experience Launch Party which will be at a beautiful venue with jazz music and food from a
notable national chef and supporting a charitable organization,YWCA’s Becky’s House; July 24th is our
new Interior Experience - A Tour of Design, Culture and Lifestyle which you won’t want to miss; August
16th is our Annual Golf Classic and you don’t have to be a golfer to attend! In fact, I played last year for
the first time ever and my team came in second place! I say my team, because I had nothing to do with
it, but it does give me an opportunity to put out a challenge…If another designer beats my second place
finish they are going to get a special gift certificate, so get out there and practice; September 15th is our
last general meeting in the fiscal year when we recognize our amazing volunteers and install the new
terms board…it’s quite a celebration!!!
For more information about our meetings and events, check the ASID Calendar regularly at
www.ASIDsandiego.org.
Best Regards,
Tina Marie Koch, ASID, CID

Victory in Virginia
Interior design professionals recently claimed a legislative victory in
Virginia. Both houses of the state legislature have passed House Bill 1265,
shattering the glass ceiling that previously prevented designers from sitting
on the board of directors at their firm. This bill opens new doors for
designers in Virginia and recognizes interior design as a separate and
distinct profession on equal footing with architects, engineers, and other
design professionals. Certified interior designers will now be able to
contribute even more to the growth of the industry through their individual firms.
The bill is currently awaiting the signature of Governor McDonnell. ASID
offers our congratulations to all interior designers in Virginia on this
victory.
Attention all Designers
and Industry Partners
with Showrooms
ASID San Diego is compiling a list of members who have showrooms
either open to the public or to the trade only. To help promote upcoming
events, we are asking those members to allow us to mount a small poster
in their window and to accept a business card holder & cards for the event
to be displayed in an appropriate location at the members’ discretion.
The main purpose of this program is to target a population interested in
a design event. The benefits to participating members include the opportunity to help their organization and to enhance their image as a company
that is engaged and supportive of the professional design community.

If you were not at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park on
12th, then you missed a fabulous event held by our chapter. Ask anyone
who was there – a fabulous time was had by all – competitors, sponsors,
guests and colleagues. The theme for the evening was world travel –
everyone checked in and received a boarding pass for the flight then
waited in our lounge. Vintage travel posters advertised exotic destinations
such as Tahiti, Rio and Europe. While sitting on lounge chairs passengers
sipped complementary drinks, nibbled airlines peanuts and pretzels, and
snacked on kobe beef burgers, spring rolls and other assorted hors
d’oeurvres.

MARCH

U P DAT E
Enhancing Your Experience: Advancing the Profession
By Stefanie Wenceslao, Allied Member ASID
Director At Large - San Diego Chapter
A picture is worth a thousand words. With that being said, I
can only smile when I look at these photos of the March 17th
ASID General Meeting at Fixtures. Pat Weiss, knowing full well
the fashion risk she would be facing, agreed to be our game
show host. The purpose of the costumes and the quiz show
was to put our members in a different frame of mind when
receiving facts about legislation and our goal of licensure for
the profession of interior design in the State of California. I
wanted to put to rest any untruths or misunderstandings
about what it means to pass legislation, but in a fun and entertaining way. Knowledge is power! The more we
know, the more successful our future. So "Thank
You" to Judy Hallberg for her assistance with the
game-show questions, Pat Weiss for playing
game-show host and wearing that boa and to all
the contestants willing to be a little silly about a
very serious issue!

Lessler’s Draperies Introduces
New Program for Designers
By Elle E. Abbott, Allied Member ASID
With the tough economic times, some businesses have been cutting
back on everything from design programs to advertising. However,
one business has taken a progressive leap to help the design
industry to rise above these current economic challenges. Lessler’s
Draperies and Design, Inc., a family owned and operated business
here in San Diego with over 50 years experience in the design
industry, is now opening their showroom to designers with a unique
program to create relationships within the design community.
While some designers have no trouble getting involved with simple
and ready made window treatments, providing clients with custom
window coverings has always been a highly detailed and specialized business that is often difficult for designers to include in their
projects.
Knowledge of product features and limitations along with measuring,
pricing, ordering, installation and the eventual service calls can be
over whelming and time consuming for designers to provide. The
costs and commitments of opening an account with most national
vendors can also be too expensive or involve too much risk to be a
viable option for many designers.
Finally an opportunity has presented itself for designers to get
involved without the expense or commitment that a national account
would require.
Lessler’s Draperies and Design, Inc. has recently created a new
department specializing in servicing designers and their clients. This
program aims to help designers sell custom window coverings while
keeping the process as simple as possible.
After setting up a partnership with Lessler’s, designers will have
access to a premier gallery showroom as well as-to-the-trade only
product seminars. Partnered designers will also have the ability to
check out samples and request quotes for their customers. Once the
project has been sold, Lessler’s takes care of the ordering, project
management, installation and service work. All a designer has to do
is present the product to their client and close the sale. Tiered
commissions or finders fee are available depending on the type of
partnership established.
Lessler’s is a company that believes in the power of relationships.
With access to the on-staff estimating and installation teams, a
beautiful gallery showroom, and virtually no out of pocket investment this innovative program is sure to provide a simple and profitable way for designers to provide custom window treatments to
their clients.
Lessler’s will be hosting an open house this summer for designers
interested in participating in the program. For more information
contact Lessler’s at 858-277-5936 or email at [email protected].
Their showroom is located at 5725 Kearny Villa Road, Suite S. San
Diego, CA 92123.

none other, of thoughtfully executed design motivated by culture and
lifestyle. Interior Experience is a special opportunity to view six venues
inspired by the art that they house, residential spaces that embrace urban

you will have an opportunity to network, socialize and tour a multifamily
clubhouse facility.

a view into Petco Park.
3. Jazz in The Neighborhood
This innovative church was created from existing movie theatres and

which it resides. Brilliant lighting, interesting wall shapes and bold colors,

The accent color for EcoHub became the pure color white, a great
choice for modernizing a space. The free-handed graphic that I painted
on one of the walls intertwines with the simple white book shelves,
which continues with the feel of an organic space. Traditional, decorative frames were repurposed from a custom frame shop in Solana
Beach, Once Upon a Frame. They were given a whole new look with a
coat of white paint to contrast against the industrial gray wall. All these
elements added to the success of the space with the custom look, that
balances style and function of the interiors with innovative building
strategies and the choice of eco-friendly materials.
Challenges
One of the challenges in the space was creating as many seating areas
in a narrow open floor plan that could be functional for individuals and
small groups. This was achieved with individual desk space along either
wall as you enter the EcoHub, which opens into an area with the
movable Kirei conference tables, where groups of people can effectively

a challenge when designing a space, so being creative with sourcing
materials and salvaged items makes not only this space unique but
affordable for its custom look.

STUDENT CORNER
Networking:
Take the First Step
By Gerald William Bouvia III, Design Institute of San
Diego, Student Representative to the Board
Every student knows that networking is important for their design career, yet most do not start
building their networks until after graduation.
Students who wait, though, are missing out on
opportunities designed to make networking easy—specifically for
students like them. As design students, we're fortunate that the professional association for our discipline, ASID, is strong and active in San
Diego. And best of all, it's easy to get started.
In my case, I learned about ASID in Anne Kellett's Introduction to Interior
Design class and attended a couple of student chapter meetings that
featured guest speakers that interested me. I knew I wanted to become
more involved in the San Diego design community, and hearing Stefanie
Wenceslao, director at large, speak one day at a meeting energized me to
take action. I ran for a position on the board of the student chapter during
that same meeting, was elected board member for hospitality, and started

sional chapters. I volunteered at the Annual Golf Classic, the Cataquarium,
and at professional events. At the Golf Classic, Stefanie introduced me to
Nancy Jackson, chapter administrator. When I told her that I plan to
design restaurants, she introduced me to Tina Koch, president, and Tony
Adamo, whose firm has designed some of the best restaurants in San
Diego. This was a dream come true, so I applied for an internship with
their firm. Tina and Tony made the scary prospect of finding an internship
something friendly and fun, and I'm looking forward to a great internship
this summer. The key was taking the first step, attending an ASID meeting.

Everyone knows how to lose weight: eat less and exercise. But how many
people are still struggling to lose weight every day? Knowing is not
enough. You need to take action. Taking the first step is the only way to
turn knowing what to do into doing it. Students are lucky. The first step
is easy: attend a student chapter meeting. Who knows what might happen

successful fundraising events sponsored by Ferguson and many of

The event raised over $1,900 to support IDCC’s legislative efforts for a

We’d like to give a shout out to the ASID Orange County Chapter for
coming to this event and to Luxe Magazine for sponsoring the bus and
their “pre-party” ride! We’d also like to thank IDCC’s Director of
Fundraising, Adriel Cogdal, ASID for her efforts in bringing this event to
fruition.
IDCC would like to send out a HUGE thank you to Kristi Nicolai from
Ferguson for her tireless efforts to organize this event. Thank you to the
Ferguson staff for all their help that evening. Remember Ferguson when
shopping for your plumbing and appliance needs, and thank them for their
support of ASID and IDCC.
The “Battle” portion of the event was such fun! There were four
teams preparing lots of wonderful food for all of the attendees
to sample. The four teams were: Jackson Design and Remodeling
partnered with Dacor, IDCC partnered with Lynx Grills, Janks
Construction partnered with Viking and ASID partnered with
Wolf and the Firefighters.
Ferguson also put together a raffle with many fantastic prizes
ranging from gift cards for local restaurants to a wine refrigerator.

I recently was doing an extensive
remodel for which I specified a custom
hand-carved Walnut entry door. Upon entering the Grand Entrances showroom I knew I had
come to the right place. The owner, Colin Pearce, and his staff, were most knowledgable and
helpful. I showed them a sketch and conceptual drawing of the antique door I had in mind
and they were able to fabricate it to my exact specifications.
Grand Entrances carries a complete selection of custom door hardware and I was able to select
just the right oil rubbed bronze entry set and hinges to match for the perfect finishing touch.
Their installers were on time, professional and efficient. And the quality of their craftsmanship
was excelled only by their customer service and follow through.
I recommend that my fellow designers acquaint themselves with this excellent resource we
have in the Grand Entrances showroom at 8228 Miramar Road. I know that my client and I
are most pleased with the entry door. A great ASID Industry Partner!
