2015 SPRING NEWSLETTER From the Director Executive Director, Richard Hill Have you ever thought about how much God loves, values and treasures you? Knowing this is one of the greatest blessings in life. Think about God’s love as expressed in Jeremiah 31:3 (KJV), “Yea I have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.” God loves us so much that He commits to love us forever and intentionally draws us to Himself. There is nothing more precious in life than experiencing God’s unconditional love and knowing that there is nothing that we can do or not do that will separate us from His love. What difference does love make? It makes all the difference in the world. The application for us is to look for ways to share God’s love with others as we follow the example of Jesus. His life was all about serving others. The reason we receive love is to be able to pass it along to others. We have a great responsibility to love God with all of our being and love others as we love ourself. 1 John 4:8 teaches us that “the one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” How are we supposed to love others? 1 John 3:18 (KJV) provides the following instruction “Let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” Loving God and others may require making a personal sacrifice by giving up some of our personal rights in order to further God’s kingdom. What are some opportunities to share God’s love with others? At The Mission we try to meet our residents’ physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Offering a kind word of encouragement is one of the most important things that can be done. Recently, one of our residents approached Continued on p. 3 Support A Resident While Beautifying Mission Entrance The Mission has embarked on a new fundraising campaign created to help support our growing resident population while also beautifying the campus’ front entrance. Resident Mentoring Program Begins The Mission is committed to helping residents become self-sufficient, productive members of society. With our present campus population about to increase to 125 by the end of the year, we need committed individuals to work with our resident women. Mentoring is a structured, one-on-one relationship that focuses on the needs of each participant. Mentoring develops caring and supportive relationships, encourages individuals to grow to their fullest potential and helps them develop a vision for their future. It also fosters active community partnerships. Continued on p. 2 Page 1 2014 Accomplishments •Additions include Brad Johnson, John Plush and Samantha Kennedy. She wanted to express her love and gratitude for being allowed to reside at The Mission. Her presentation included a message from God’s word, praise dancing and singing the favorite song of each staff member in attendance. Think about how much time went into learning the lyrics for thirteen songs. Needless to say, we were all blessed. In Romans 13:8 we are instructed to “owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.” When we serve our fellow man, we are demonstrating love toward them, and this greatly honors our Lord. As you receive the blessing of God’s love, please search your heart to prayerfully consider how you might help the women and children residing at the Mission of Yahweh. This spring we are faced with the following Page 3 challenges: •Improve the quality of our programs so that more lives are transformed, the cycle of homelessness is broken and the goal of moving toward independent living is achieved. •Help a greater percentage of our residents build a more solid foundation for life, experience salvation, rededicate their lives and grow in their faith. •Complete the two major capital projects to replace our kitchen, dining area and laundry room and to renovate the Main Building. Some of our major accomplishments in 2014 and updates on projects include the following: •Acquired the house built on two lots next to the Main Building to accommodate our planned expansion. In the short term it will provide much needed storage space. Continued on p. 8 Music Room Dedication The dedication of the Sybil Roos Children’s Music Room was a very special event at The Mission. With the present cuts to school system budgets, the arts and music programs are being eliminated. The Mission feels that exposure to music is an important building block in the development of a young child. A large room in the Sister Gay’s Children’s Home, designed and decorated by Warner Roberts, was converted to fulfill this need. At the dedication, Ms. Roos played the piano (donated by Paul-David Van Atta) while grandaughter Rebecca Bertrand serenaded. Music Instructor, Jenny Man, along with other volunteers teach singing and piano to resident children. (Sybil also made a 5-year commitment to support the Mission Unplugged Benefit Concerts and the Children’s Music Program.) The Annual Christmas On A Mission For several years now, Monica and John Blaisdell and a team of dedicated Mission volunteers have raised $25,000 to provide a Christmas Day that resident women and children will never forget! Along with presents for the women, the children actually receive gifts that they’ve asked for from Santa! It is complete with Santa, plenty of elves, a D.J., snow slide, sleds, line dancing and a snowball fight! Page 4 Photography by Michelle Watson Melissa Manchester Mission Benefit Concert The 2nd Annual Mission Unplugged Grammy Winner Benefit Concert was another huge success. Held at Hobby Center and hosted by Sue and Lester Smith, Melissa Manchester thoroughly entertained the crowd. Her performance included a duet with Debra Duncan! Sponsor Sybil Roos was honored and serenaded by the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music students. SAVE the DATE: October 13, 2015 at the Hobby Center with Oleta Adams. Watch for more information on our website. Children’s Christmas Eve Every Christmas Eve, The Mission vans carry all our resident children to Grace Presbyterian Church. The evening service is designed for children and is complete with a children’s video, a play and a rock band for sing-alongs. The evening ends with a Christmas lighting tour. Annual Holiday Neighborhood Dinner Give-Outs Volunteers During the Holidays Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, The Mission gives out 400-500 complete turkey dinners to needy families in the neighborhood. Volunteer groups have always made the holidays special for The Mission residents...including on Valentine’s Day. This year’s activities were exceptional. Thank you all!
