Flywheel Energy Storage

Flywheel energy storage consists of an advanced carbon
fibre tube, which is floated on magnets inside a
vacuum. Electricity from renewable sources like wind
turbines is used to spin the tube or flywheel at very high
speeds. Because the flywheel is in a near frictionless
environment, it continues to spin until such time as the
energy is required back in the electricity grid. The new
hybrid flywheel energy storage plant is to be built at a
site in Rhode, Co Offaly

Justin is a consultant with 15yrs renewable energy experience, specialising in wind energy development, financial
modelling, and energy trading under supplier-lite structures.
Sheila Layden, EnergyPro Ltd Through Moneenatieve Wind Farm Ltd, she developed two windfarms, totalling 12 MW and operational since 2005. Sheila has managed windfarms in Ireland for over 17 years, for individual windfarm owners, MWFL and corporate funds. In 2014 she set up EnergyPro and is currently spearheading EnergyPro’s growth in the area of windfarm data analytics. This includes reviewing windfarm data to proactively manage and improve turbine performance. For the past eighteen months she has been actively involved in the consultation process for the design of the I-­‐SEM. Sheila has a Bachelor of Engineering from NUI Galway, and a Diploma in Accounting and Finance. Wilke Janssen, Sales Country Manager with Enercon
Wilke has an Industrial Engineer Degree in Environmental and Energy Technology and has been working in the Irish Wind
Energy Market for the last 5 years.

Errol is an Assistant Principal Officer in the Decarbonisation Division in DCENR with responsibility for management of
the REFIT schemes and the development of the new support scheme for renewable electricity

Grattan Healy BEmech MBA, Energy Adviser, Director, Ierne Ltd.
Grattan worked as the Energy Policy Adviser to the Green Group in the European Parliament / European Free Alliance from 1995 to 2001, after which he returned to Ireland to develop renewable energy projects. For that purpose and also to provide consulting services, he founded Ierne Ltd (ierne.ie). He is a council member of the Irish Wind Energy Association, full member of Meitheal na Gaoithe, and a partner in Fuinneamh Sceirde Teoranta (a founder member of the National Offshore Wind Association of Ireland), which is developing an offshore wind project off the Galway coast. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCD and an MBA from Trinity. Joanne Finn – Partner Eugene F Collins
Joanne is a partner and is head of the EU Competition & Regulated Markets Group. She has over 14 years’ experience
advising Irish and international clients.
Joanne regularly advises on competition law and merger control for key clients in the energy, agri-food and health sectors.
She has advised on investigations by and complaints to the Competition Authority and the European Commission and
has advised Government Departments on successfully obtaining State aid approval. In 2010, Eugene F. Collins was
appointed as an Irish advisor to the European Commission’s Legal Service in the Commission’s intervention in the
landmark BIDS case, and the firm carries out on-going advice for that client.
Joanne advises public and private sector clients on the implications of EU and Irish regulation in a wide range of sectors
including consumer law, energy, telecommunications, aviation and health. Joanne also advises on procurement law and
is regularly involved in acting both for and against awarding authorities in relation to challenges to contract awards.
Ronan O’Meara – Director EnergyPro
Ronan is a chartered engineer and renewable energy analyst, with a particular research interest in computational fluid
dynamics modelling of wind flow patterns around obstacles. As a director with EnergyPro, he focuses on wind turbine
performance analysis. He previously worked as Engineering Manager at Airgen Renewables where he led a team of 15
engineers and technicians in analysing and developing wind turbine sites across the UK. Ronan holds a Bachelor of
Engineering from UCD and a Masters in Renewable Energy Systems Technology from Loughborough University.
