CHAMBER CHATTER - City of Montevallo

CHAMBER CHATTER
May 2015 | Vol. 13, No. 5
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE NEWS
I have a good friend who is quick to correct grammar—
especially when there is a redundancy. The following are just
a few examples: “tuna fish,” “empty space,” “end result,”
and the often used “for free,” or “free gift.” These are known
as pleonasms. I must admit I am guilty of some of these
breaches of grammar. If you do an online search, you can
find hundreds of these amusing word combinations.
I am going to focus on the latter of these combinations
dealing with the word “free.” We have all heard there is
no such thing as a “free lunch” and, even if there were,
there is still some consideration or commitment involved.
The consideration may not be monetary, but there is an
investment. It can be as simple as investing time out of
your schedule to go to lunch, or you may make the financial
commitment to pick up the tab.
I recently had the opportunity to work with a business
owner who is considering locating to Montevallo. We spent
time visiting possible locations and discussing how the
business would fill a retail need for our community. The word
“investment” kept coming up in the conversation, and not
Written by Steve Gilbert, Executive Director
just in terms of capital expenditure. Investment is key to the
success of a business venture. You have to be invested in
your business in many ways. Along with the money comes an
investment in time – “sweat equity,” as it is often called – those
long hours when you are laying out a floor plan, stocking the
shelves, and getting the sign placed over the door. You must
commit to making your business work long before the cash
register rings from the first sale. That is the difficult balance
of the job here at the Chamber – selling the advantages of
locating in our community, but never overstating the benefits.
Filling that “empty space” on
Main Street is never easy. The “end
result” can only be achieved through
involvement and commitment and
those “redundancies” require an
investment. We need more of those
in our community. The resulting
benefits are the gift.
CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWS
Mayor’s Message...
The Big Event: A great big thanks-back at ya!
Dear University of Montevallo Students,
While there are countless numbers of gestures for
which to thank you (shopping at our businesses, eating at
our restaurants, hosting community food drives, providing
role models for our children, etc.) today I express my deep
appreciation for all that you did during the Big Event on April
11th. I understand that this event was established as a way
for you all to show your appreciation to a community who
provides so much to you, but I would be remiss if I did not
return that thanks to all of you who participated in this terrific
volunteer project. I understand over 650 students were
involved. I especially applaud Ms. Jenny Bell and her staff
for launching this event and coordinating the projects.
I awoke early April 11th to assist my husband in setting
up his booth at the Montevallo Arts Festival which was
AMAZING, by the way! As I left the park for the second time
to run errands, I was met with a wave of lavender t-shirts.
They were everywhere, literally! The first wave hit me (not
literally) at Orr Park. As I rounded the corner, the next wave
covered a church and homes on Shelby Street. Traveling
throughout town I noted students picking up trash along the
roads. One altruistic group built a raised-bed garden for a
resident of our public housing authority who has physical
limitations.
Numerous stories were recounted to me all over the
community with these gestures of kindness. Students
assisted in our public library, at our community garden, at
our recycling center and private businesses and residences
from one end of town to the other. The impact of this event
is tremendous, not only on the physical beauty of the
community but on continuing this spirit of unity throughout
town.
We are absolutely thrilled to see
your bright smiling faces all over town
on the day of the Big Event and every
day of the year. This town would not
be what it is without you. I hope you
will think of Montevallo as your home
and as the place where you truly
“grew up”.
Much love to you all,
Hollie C. Cost, Mayor

Announcement: Change of Venue for the AAUW
Reception and Awards Ceremony scheduled for Thursday,
April 23, at 6:00 p.m. Because of a schedule conflict, the

GPA. These honorees will receive a year’s complimentary
membership in AAUW through the National Association’s
Give a Grad a Gift program. We also plan to recognize the
recipients of the AAUW Book Scholarship and the AAUW
Hallie Farmer Legacy Scholarship, and again pay tribute to
our AAUW Pathfinder recipient, LaTonja Battle.
Branch members and guests are invited to meet the
AAUW award recipients and their families, help to celebrate
their outstanding achievements, and find out more about
their future plans. Guests interested in joining AAUW may

2015 TOUR DE CURE IS JUNE 13TH
Two years ago Cindy Holsombeck, Montevallo’s assistant
city clerk, knew something was wrong. She was experiencing
blurry vision and unquenchable thirst. “The lightbulb clicked
on and I knew I had it.” The “it” is type 2 diabetes, a disease
that runs in her family. Her father and one of her brothers
both died at age 49 with the disease, and her two remaining
brothers have the disease, too.
The diagnosis changed Cindy’s
life—certain foods like orange juice
and sweet tea are no longer on the
menu, and she takes medicine to
manage the chronic condition. She
also now incorporates exercise into
her daily routine. “I always walk
to the restaurant I’m going to for
lunch,” she says. “I’m a big walker. I
also love to go dancing. I try to work
in activity into social situations.” For
example, she likes to go bowling
with friends and take her nephew
and niece hiking at Oak Mountain.
Cindy is also preparing to ride in the American Diabetes
Association’s 2015 Tour de Cure, which takes place June 13
in Montevallo. The ride, which features multiple distances
and even has an option for people to ride stationary bikes,
raises money for diabetes research and awareness of the
disease. “I rode 13 miles on the stationary bike last year, but
I may go for 20 this year.”
“Having diabetes is not fun,” Cindy says. “But it is a
disease you can manage. You have a lot more control over it
than people with other illnesses … with the right information
and support, organizations like the ADA. That’s why I do
the Tour de Cure to promote awareness and do a little
fundraising.”
Find out more about the Tour de Cure and support Cindy

BOYS AND GIRLS
CLUB NEWS
The race to summer has definitely begun at the Boys
& Girls Club with planning almost complete and registration
just beginning, Summer 2015 Boys & Girls Club style is less
than a month away from our May 27th opening day. Weekly
movies at the library, art & crafts, outdoor and gym recreation,
swimming trips to UM (with lessons for those who need them)
board and video games and of course DODGEBALL is just
a bit of the fun which goes on from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day
at our year-round site at the Montevallo Park & Recreation
Building and at MES.
In addition to a fresh twist on traditional favorites
including sports, fine arts, science and other BGCA programs
we have some fun new theme weeks scheduled. Hero Week
is where we learn about and thank our hometown heroes and
have some fun with our favorite super heroes… or maybe
we’ll create our own! During Crazy Calendar Week we will
celebrate Christmas in July, the Iron Bowl, and other member
favorites and Real World Week will give members a taste
of what it is like to earn a salary…and pay bills! Triple R
Week will help us all reduce our carbon footprint as we learn
to reduce, reuse, recycle AND recognize, refuse, and report
bullying in all its forms.
We are especially excited about two new parts of our
summer program. First twenty rising 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders
will SAIL into Summer Adventures In Learning, a United
Way program designed to decrease the number of children
who fall into the ‘summer slide’. The summer slide is when
students do not retain knowledge or skills over the summer
due to lack of using, improving, and building upon skills and
knowledge learned during the school year. This along with
our participation in the Parnell Library’s summer reading
program, book clubs, daily brain challenges and other BGCA
high-yield learning activities will have our members exercising
their brains as well as their bodies all summer long!
Beginning this summer we are delighted that we will be
able to offer teens a wide variety of opportunities to gain new
skills, learn new things, serve their community and just have
fun hanging out with one another! Through a new partnership
with the City of Montevallo, we will build on the foundation
laid at the MARC (Montevallo Arts & Recreation Center) by
the Montevallo Junior City Council by bringing national Boys
& Girls Club programs designed for teens to this setting. The
summer fee for teens is $100 and their site will be the Scout
Hut which will open at 12:30 and close at 6. Teens who need
a place to go in the morning are welcome to join our older
members at our Year-round Club for an additional fee of
$100. If requested, the fees can be paid in installments. Call
665-4466 for more information.

Here’s what you missed at the
Chamber Luncheon…..
April’s chamber luncheon guest speaker Shane Baugh,
Director of Montevallo Parks and Recreation, presented
information on the impact of youth sports on our city’s
economy. Travel Ball Tournaments fill the fields at Stephens
Park most weekends throughout the spring and summer. An
average tournament can bring upwards of 900 people to our
city. Over the course of the tournament, they purchase food
and drinks from our restaurants and convenience stores,
not to mention gas, and other items from our retailers.
Montevallo now offers Basketball, Softball, Soccer and
Volleyball. Is your business taking advantage of this growing
