CHAMBER OF COMMERCE NEWS
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant:
if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would
not be so welcome.” [Meditations Divine and Moral] ― Anne
Bradstreet
We spend a lot of time focusing on the climate; in fact,
there are numerous media outlets that operate around the
clock keeping us up to date on the weather. I bet many of
you, as do I, have an app on your phone for the weather. My
maternal grandmother – Nanny – had all kinds of sayings and
insights into the weather, like: “If it thunders in February, there
will be a frost in May” and “there are two winters in the spring,
dogwood and blackberry.” She also used the expression “it’s
coming up a bad cloud” to warn us of an impending storm. I
often wonder if our forecasting today is any more accurate
than the wisdom and observation of our ancestors. You can
look at maps, stare at numbers and statistics for hours on
Written by Steve Gilbert, Executive Director
end, but sometimes you just have to step outside to look at
the sky and feel the wind.
My point is that sometimes we just have to trust our
feelings, rely on our experiences, and make decisions. Being
in business is a lot like that. I think we often get caught up in the
facts and figures, the daily routines of keeping the business
running. Making your business better could be as simple as
asking your customers what they
need, what they would like to have
available, or, “How can we better
serve you?” Think about it – are you
willing to take the time to step outside
the box? I challenge you to look at the
daily routine of running your business,
and ask questions. Maybe it’s time
to “look at the sky and feel the wind,”
and do a little “business forecasting.”
CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWS
Mayor’s Message...
MONTEVALLO: HEALTHY IN OH, SO MANY WAYS!!
In the recent Smart Asset report, Montevallo was
ranked the 3rd Healthiest Real Estate Market in Alabama.
Although I have continually touted Montevallo as a healthy
real estate investment, my “touting” was a bit subjective,
based on my passion for the community and a shared belief
that this community is a solid investment due to our wide
range of educational, economic, cultural and recreational
opportunities. The Smart Asset report factored more objective
variables into their methodology: stability, affordability, fluidity
and risk of loss. It was refreshing to see something I’ve felt in
my heart for years finally quantified. Montevallo is NOT a risk.
Montevallo IS an investment, in so many ways.
While the health of the real estate market is incredibly
important, a community’s physical health ranking is even
more so. One key aspect of a healthy community is the
opportunity to participate in physical activity. I am incredibly
proud of the real estate ranking. I am also intensely proud
of the physical health initiatives that are embedded in our
community and continue to strengthen. These initiatives
are not just recreational opportunities; they are a way
of committing ourselves to a strong and healthy future.
Perhaps our youth coined it best when they elected to focus
on “Promoting Healthy Initiatives” as an annual goal for
Students’ Institute this year. They want healthier food choices
and more physical activity initiatives. You may be surprised to
learn about a few of our upcoming opportunities.

MONTEVALLO BRANCH OF AAUW EVENTS IN APRIL
On Wednesday, April 8, at 4:00 p.m. at Eclipse Coffee
and Books, the Montevallo Branch of AAUW will host an
annual celebration of Alabama Authors whose works
address issues of special concern to women and their
families. This year’s topic is the experience of families living
in the mining communities of our area. Presenter Norman
McMillan will discuss The Path Was Steep, a memoir by
the late Sue Pickett. According to Suzanne LaRosa of New
South Books, “Sue Pickett was a coal miner’s daughter
who became a coal miner’s wife and dealt with coal mine
bosses throughout the Appalachian South -- especially
her native Alabama. The dramatic central episode in her
account is a March 1934 stand-off between striking miners
and the mine owners. Suzanne Pickett was first published
when she was eleven years old on the children’s page
of the Birmingham News. She later wrote short stories
and articles that appeared in Weird Tales Magazine, and
worked for many years as a reporter and columnist for the
Centreville Press, which serialized five of her books. The
Path Was Steep is funny and moving in equal parts and
evocative of the culture and time.”
Respondents will be Professor Jim Day and Mr. Henry
Emfinger, Director of the Aldrich Coal Mine Museum. The
respondents will provide historical information on the
background and context of coal mining in the area. Cheryl
Patton will co-host the event.
On Thursday, April 23rd, at 6 p.m. in Reynolds Foyer,
AAUW will host a Reception and Awards Ceremony for the
recipients of AAUW Senior Awards and AAUW Scholarships.
