SOCAR MONTREUX JAZZ ELECTRIC GUITAR COMPETITION ENTRY FORM – Rules & Regulations 1. General Conditions of entry The Socar Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition is open to guitarists of all nationalities born after January 1st, 1985. Previous first prize winners of the competition are not eligible to compete. Finalists and semifinalists of Montreux’s previous competitions may not compete more than three times. 2. How to apply Application to be filled in online. Closing date March 1st 2015 (UTC+01:00) with the requested items. Artists will have to submit: a. Accept the Rules and Regulations of the entry form and the Information of the Socar Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition 2015 by clicking on the “I Accept” check box in the application website. b. Upload in mp3 format file the requested songs. The total length of the 3 recordings should not exceed 10 minutes and must include three pieces of music: o a blues (12 bars) o a personal choice (note that this one can be inspired by any music styles) o one original piece: to be chosen from this list: Solar Blame it on my youth Blackbird River man My favorite things Afro blue My one and only love Naima Impressions Aqua De Beber Corcovado Waltz for Debby Artists should perform their own interpretation of the original piece, improving and developing it. c. Upload an ID or professional photo (max weight 4 Mb) d. Upload a photocopy of the entrant’s Identity Card, Passport or Driver License (the birth date has to appear on the copy) e. Jury and selection process Two groups of juries will intervene throughout the competition. Both of them will consider the following criteria: originality, personal language and musicality, sound, phrasing, interplay with the band and mastery of the instrument. Pre-­‐Selection Jury (3-­‐5 members): composed of leading figures from the Swiss musical world. The chairman of this jury is one of the members of the foundation board and he established the list of pieces the candidates should play. The applications will be assessed on the basis of the mp3 files and the other documents received. Live Performance Jury: during the semifinals and the finals in Montreux, the candidates will play in front of the Live Performance Jury (5-­‐7 members) chaired by an artist performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival. This jury will be composed of members of the foundation board of the Montreux Artists Foundation (MJAF), of one of the executive officer of the MJAF as well as international figures from the musical world. At the end of a plenary discussion, the jury will take a blind vote. Please note that jury members vote impartially and conscientiously. The jury reserves the right to select co-­‐winners when it considers it appropriate. Moreover, the audience is solicited during the final. The members of the audience are invited to take a blind vote to select the winner of the Audience Choice. 4. Stages of the competition Pre-­‐Selection Candidates will be selected by the pre-­‐selection jury whose members are linked to the Montreux Jazz Festival and under the coordination of a member of the board of the MJAF. Jury members will examine the applications and select a maximum of 15 candidates. All the applicants will be notified approximately by May 2015 by email if they have been selected or not for the semifinals. Semifinals (maximum 15 competitors) The guitarists qualified for the semifinals will be invited to perform in Montreux in July 2015 (the exact dates of competition are yet to be determined). The candidates will have to perform in front of the Live Performance Jury: -­‐ one of the original pieces to be choosen from the list in parragraph 2.b (excluding the one played for the mp3 sent on the application) -­‐ a personal composition or a personal choice The length of the performance shall be 10 minutes max. The jury will select 3 guitarists. Final (3 competitors) The final will be held the day after the semifinals. The participating Artists will have to perform in front of the Live Performance Jury: -­‐ one of the original pieces to be choosen from the list in parragraph 2.b (excluding the one played for the mp3 sent on the application and the one played for the semifinals) -­‐ a personal composition or a personal choice -­‐ a 12 bar Blues The length of the performance shall be 15 minutes max. The jury will take a blind vote to determine the ranking list. SOCAR MONTREUX JAZZ ELECTRIC GUITAR COMPETITION ENTRY FORM – Rules & Regulations For the mp3 sent on the application, the candidate will be able to choose the instrument(s) that accompany him/her. For the semi-­‐finals and final, the candidate must present the musical pieces either as a solo electric guitar performance or with an electric guitar accompanied by a rhythm section (bass and drum, provided by the Montreux Jazz Festival). For the semi-­‐finals and final, the score should be sent in advance so it can be given to the backing band. The Festival will also provide the candidates Fender amplifier. 5. Prizes The first prize winner of the Socar Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition receives: -­‐ CHF 5’000. – Swiss francs -­‐ A certificate -­‐ A recording session at the Balik Farm Studio, located in the Switzerland’s Toggenburg region. (After signing an agreement with the MJAF and the Balik Farm, the Artist will be able to use free of charge the recording for further commercial exploitation) -­‐ An invitation to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival the following year The second prize winner receives CHF 3’000. – Swiss francs and a certificate. The third prize winner receives CHF 2’000. – Swiss francs and a certificate. The three finalists will be invited to the Montreux Jazz Academy organized each year in autumn. Moreover, the Socar Montreux Jazz Electric Guitar Competition attracts an audience of connoisseurs who award their own prize. The winner of the Audience Choice receives a voucher to be used at the Montreux Jazz Shop, as well as a certificate. 6. Recording and Broadcasting Rights The Fondation du Festival de Jazz de Montreux or its successor has the right to record the sound (the "Audio Recording") and visuals (the "Video Recording") of all Artist's performances during the competition and any other venues concerning the Montreux Jazz Festival now and in the future and to exploit the same, without payment of any compensation to Artist, for all forms of worldwide television and radio (including for news and information purposes), Internet streaming (including free on-­‐demand streaming) and on any kind of commercial audio device or commercial audiovisual device (including download) now known or hereafter developed. The Fondation du Festival de Jazz de Montreux or its successor has the right to use Artist's name and likeness, as well as the right to use the Audio Recording and the Video Recording for the promotion of the Montreux Jazz Festival. If the Artist grants an interview recorded or filmed by or on behalf of the Montreux Jazz Festival, such interview may be utilized in connection with the rights granted above. Travel and accommodation expenses are to be covered entirely by the candidates. c. The jury’s assessment will take place in private in accordance with the assessment criteria presented (see above). The Artist accepts that the jury’s decisions are final and that no appeal is possible. The Foundation will not be held responsible if, in case of necessity, the present competition is modified, postponed or cancelled. Any dispute relating to the interpretation, execution or non-­‐execution of the present regulations will be subject to the Swiss Law.
