TERM 1– Week 9 March 26 2015 What’s Coming Up? Many of you will be up and around the school over the holidays which we love as it helps keep our school safe. If you are coming to the school grounds, I am just letting you know that there will be a certain amount of activity happening. Externally, we will be having our playground court lines re-marked and some new games (e.g. Snakes and Ladders) painted on. Internally, the entrance to the school will also be painted as it is looking very drab and dreary and hasn’t been painted since 2000. And the air conditioner for the gym will be installed. Equipment wise, we will be purchasing the rest of the LFD’s (Large Format Display) which we are using instead of interactive whiteboards. Finally, CAMP Australia will be running their Holiday program in the gymnasium; so lots of movement and lots of people. The students in the band are usually those students who are learning music from our Instrumental Music teachers. This year, we again intend to run it and so students in Erin Kersing’s flute group, Melanie Simpson’s strings and brass students, and Maddie Sutherland’s clarinet group will have an opportunity to play in the school Ensemble Band if they so wish. There will be no costs associated with the band and we will provide a teacher-Gareth Voight. It is also likely (it is just in the planning stage at the moment) that we will be offering a violin group. Tim Veldman (Jeremy and Annalies) teaches music and is in the MSO, and is keen to start a violin group at school. However as you would expect, time is an issue for him and so we are working through logistics with him and Gareth before we start. Update on Liam Hall We haven’t given an update on Liam for a while so I thought it would be a nice way to finish off the term. Liam is now sitting up and able to feed. He is undergoing intensive rehabilitation and is working hard throughout the day in therapy sessions. The good news is that he is improving and we are thrilled for him and Christine, Daniel, Brodie and the rest of their family. UNIFORM SHOP NEWS As reported previously in the newsletter, School Council has decided to outsource the Uniform Shop to our current supplier of uniforms, RHSports. The good news is that some things will stay the same and some things will be added to our current service. The Uniform Shops hours will stay the same: THURSDAYS 8:45-9:30 in the same location. If you leave the order at school, it will still be processed and delivered to your child’s classroom. Things that will change slightly: • You can still leave orders at school, there will be a locked box near the uniform cupboards to place your order in. It will be checked regularly. • You will be able to pay by Cash, Cheque or Eftpos at the uniform shop on Thursday mornings. • RHSports does have an online ordering service. Orders can be placed online and delivered to your home for a $10 flat rate for orders under $100. Orders over $100 will be delivered for free. Orders can also be delivered to school for free and disbursed to your child’s classroom. This service will start the first week back of next term on Thursday 16th April. YEAR 2 Classroom Clippings It has been another busy week is Grade 2. We have enjoyed meeting each family to discuss your child’s achievements in Term 1 and goals for Term 2. This week we have been investigating books by Mem Fox. Through related activities we have been writing blurbs, making story maps and discussing what symbols make Australia unique. Here are some work samples from the amazing students of 2C lead by their teacher Terrific Tracey. “The little girl was as shy as a mouse and as quiet as grass growing on a small hill.” – Ruby “Steve was being very obnoxious. Steve was using all of his knowledge’. – James We hope you have a restful Easter and enjoy time with your family and friends. Grade 2 teachers. YEAR 4 Classroom Clippings Garden Over the last couple of weeks, we have been doing garden. We have been talking about where foods come from. Not all foods come from Australia. We have also been sowing seeds, planting, weeding and watering the garden beds. For the past three weeks, the Year 4s have been on chicken duty. Kitchen The 3s, 4s, 5s and 6s have started kitchen. We have been using fruits and vegetables from the garden. In kitchen, we have been learning about foods from other countries, such as Italian foods, traditional Australian and Bush Tucker. We also had to discover where the food comes from and how far away from Melbourne it originated. For example, Hot Smoked Paprika comes from Spain- 6983.58kms away!
