His mates still visit him each week at RCH which he absolutely loves and this week he had a visit from Tom Davis and Jenny Hutchinson. He managed to fit them into his busy schedule between therapy, talking with the nurses and playing handball with the other patients. We have been liaising with the RCH therapists and school and we are hoping to skype Liam into Tom’s class in the near future. Below I have included some terrific shots of our smiling Liam. I was disappointed to receive a letter from a local resident who told me of their experiences with some of our families. This resident has lived in the area for 30 years and as such has seen some appalling driving and parking around the school zone at drop off and pick up time. They have seen students nearly run over and knocked off bikes and unfortunately watched parents having a total disregard for other students, siblings and parents when they are dropping off and collecting their children. But it was a recent event that sparked their outrage. Last Friday, the resident witnessed what they described as truly dangerous and selfish behaviour from parents. There were cars parked along the boundary fence line. These cars were all parked in a NO STANDING ZONE! The cars were parked all the way up to the entrance of the school around 3.15pm. This is of course, the same time that kinder finishes. The resident watched as Mums, Dads, siblings, prams & dogs were all FORCED to walk on the road due to their being no other place for them to Birthdays May 8 - 14 8 9 Pip Hanson Charlotte Forrestal Jasper Sibbing Oliver PlunkettZbaracki Dylan Mackay 10 Keeley Smith 11 Tom Faulks Leo D’Angelo 12 Jessica Nicholls Zane Larsen Will Hammond 13 Tommy Barker 14 Rainer Dique Zac Zaga Frank Sparks go. Inevitably there are so many near misses that it is only a matter of time before there is a serious injury or fatality on this road. The resident contacted the Council and as a result a number of cars were issued with infringement notices during the week. After this occurred, cars parked further down Buena Vista Drive and there was no access problems for parents or students at all. It was a simple fix and it is puzzling that it does not happen more often. We are all time poor but the benefits of parking a bit further down the street and walking to pick up your child are immeasurable. It may save a life. Learning Intentions Parents walking around our school or helping in classrooms will have noticed that in every class they will see the lesson ‘Learning Intention’ for each session. We believe that when the learning intention is articulated and written for each session, the students are more engaged and feel more secure in their learning. Great teaching links a lesson’s learning intention with the learning outcome (and sometimes the success criteria). A learning intention for a lesson (or series of lessons) clearly states what we intend our students to know, understand and be able to do as a direct result of a learning and teaching activity. Professor John Hattie, in his research on what makes a significant effect on learning in the classroom; found that direct instruction (of which a learning intention is part of) is a major factor in children making progress. Mothers’ Day Stall I want to express my sincere thanks to Jo Scott for her outstanding organisation of the Mothers’ Day Stall. No doubt mums you will all reap the rewards of receiving some lovely gifts on Sunday morning, carefully selected just for you. I would also like to thank the rest of the Parents and Friends volunteers for their assistance in setting up the stall and guiding the many excited gift buyers. I wish all mums a fabulous day on Sunday and hope you are all very spoilt. Line Marking When you are next in the school, you will notice that all the line marking has been completed thanks to Brighter Lines in Ballarat. The mud on the asphalt was cleared off by Steve, our cleaner and as a result the lines could be done without the paint lifting off. It has noticeably brightened up the yard. MANY HAPPY RETURNS Best Birthday Wishes to all of the above students Walk Safely To School Day and Walking Bus. Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: - Walking with them the whole way to school - If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop - If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 22 May 2015! As recognition of this day we would like to not only encourage as many students as possible to walk to school that day but also to introduce a ‘Walking Bus ‘ in Grand Boulevard. We do already have one informal Walking Bus from Kirwana Grove with a few of our parents but we are hoping to have one that starts down the end of Grand Boulevard (near the Bolton Street end) and winds its way up Grand Boulevard. If you are interested either let us know in the office or contact Naomi Crawford-Condie (Oliver and Samson) For more information about the actual day, visit www.walk.com.autime MSPS Achievers Well done to Danni Rowles, Neil Whitehead and Chris Cameron and the Years 3-6 staff for their hard work and dedication in conducting the MSPS Cross Country last Monday. Both Danni and Chris were at the Eltham Lower Park before school setting up the course and then overseeing the different age groups. The rest of the staff supervised the children on the buses and then in groups until the students were called to their event. We had some parent volunteers and staff who were around the running course to ensure the safety of the students. Without their work the event could not happen and we are extremely grateful for their efforts. Congratulations to Laura Brearley, Harry Curtis, Nick Makrides Michael Jones for the energetic manner with which they led the school in singing the National Anthem at our assembly on Wednesday. I am a very proud teacher here at Monty South and every year I manage to get the best class in the school! I love my students and each of them will always hold a special place in my heart. A happy, positive person, I love spending time with my gorgeous husband, Darren, our four amazing children, Ben, Hannah, Maddy and Dylan, and our close family and friends. We have a pet rabbit called Custard and we have trained her like a dog! I love to cook different cuisines from around the world and dish up feasts for family and friends. I'm known for eating lots of chilli- maybe that's why I am always hot and don't own a winter coat! I also love gardening and have recently established a veggie garden, complete with chilli plants of course! Our garden is visited by many native birds (some I can hand feed) and I love being outdoors in the fresh air. One of my favourite places to be is relaxing in my pergola, watching the wildlife and listening to my husband play the guitar and sing. We love to visit new places and experience new cultures (as long as it's not too hot and there are power points for my hair dryer,) and I'm excited about planning trips to Hawaii and Europe in the next few years. One thing you may find surprising about me is that I secretly adore rearranging cupboards and cleaning out rooms! My name is Jenny Hutchinson and I have been teaching at Monty South for four years. Before working here I was at Lalor East Primary School for 14 years. It was definitely time for a change as I also went to primary school at Lalor East! My beautiful 8 year old daughter Emma is in Year 3 at St Mary’s in Greensborough. We have a gorgeous 7 month old King Charles Cavalier puppy named Molly who we just adore. She is very spoilt and loves sleeping on the couch or on Emma’s bed! We enjoy taking her for walks and running around with her in the backyard. We love to holiday in Echuca, we usually spend the Christmas and Easter holidays there. It’s a great town and a wonderful place to relax with family and friends. I am a proud Carlton supporter and I’m hoping for a major comeback this year so we can win our 17th premiership. Go Blues! Hi my name is Rachel Phillips, and I, along with the lovely Lisa Symons teach 3L. This is my first year teaching level 3 students and I love the insightful class discussions and watching the children apply their knowledge to class projects. Before teaching at MSPS, I taught out in the Western suburbs (go Bulldogs) before travelling to China to teach in an international school for 3 years. At MSPS, I have had the pleasure of teaching Prep (foundation) for several years and Level 2. In 2011 I went on maternity leave, returning in 2014 two kids richer. I have 3 year old daughter and soon to be 2 year old son– to say life is busy is an understatement. Outside of school, my family and I like to take long road trips in the search of lonely surf breaks. Lisa Symons My relationship with Monty South started about 15 years ago when I chose the school for my own children. I now feel very lucky to be teaching at such an amazing school. I have taught Year 2 for the past 2 years and loved every moment with those beautiful children. This year I share a Year 3 class with the lovely Rachel and we're enjoying a gorgeous group of caring, hardworking kids who love to share their knowledge and ideas and are always excited and interested in our classroom activities. I am fortunate that the trip to work takes only 5 minutes as I live in Eltham. My family life is very important to me and I love spending time and taking care of my 3 beautiful teenage boys and husband. Weekends are busy watching basketball and volleyball games, catching up with family and friends, movies, walking our dog and sometimes getting to a Collingwood match, even though my team is Geelong! I have loved being part of the Monty South community and look forward to whatever is coming next! Student of the Week Abigail Harland 2R Mackenzie Hall 2J Kate Hamilton 5T Mia Maywald 4D work! Amy and David collect the weekly Sports Award for Ninox YEAR 2 Classroom Clippings The Year 2 classes are exploring persuasive writing. We have looked at where persuasive writing is found, what the purpose of it is and the structure we use when writing a persuasive piece. The next few weeks in classroom clippings, we will features persuasive writing from each Year 2 grade. This week here’s a viewpoint of our remarkable writers of 2R. Do you agree with them? We all should recycle! We strongly believe people should recycle because if we don’t the climate on the earth will change and it will become too hot for us to survive. Firstly, everyone should recycle properly to help reduce the amount of terrible greenhouse gases that is created from rubbish in our landfills. If we don’t recycle the world’s atmosphere will get thinner and we could die because of global warming. Secondly, we should recycle our plastics and aluminium so it does not end up in our ocean and hurt our amazing marine life. How would you like it if you were the marine life and rubbish was dumped in your home? Thirdly, if we recycle paper, we will not have to cut down as many trees. If we cut down too many trees we may not have enough oxygen to survive. We need trees to survive. Cutting down trees also ruins the habitats of our special native animals. Many people may think recycling is too hard but if we all help each other to learn how to recycle we can all work together to help save our earth! Some Year 2C offerings Why couldn’t the skeleton go the disco part? Because he didn’t have anybody to go with. Ruby Eamon’s riddle What can go up a pipe down, but cannot go down a pipe up? An umbrella If you are in a stone house with no door or window how do you go out? You get a bat and a ball, and you bat the ball to the mirror and you miss the mirror – Strike 1 You do it again – Strike 2 You do it again! Strike 3 – You are OUT!
