ANZAC DAY CENTENARY COMMEMORATIONS
As you are all aware our unit ‘Our Place in the World’ has been a natural segue
into the study of ANZAC Day and what it means for Australia. Whilst all our
classes have investigated some aspect of Australia and how and where we
take our place in the world, the 100 year commemoration of the first time the
ANZACS went ashore at Gallipoli holds great significance. The heroism of the
ANZACs, the sheer number of casualties in this battle that lasted 8 months
(originally intended to be a one day battle) and the fact that for the whole of
World War 1 the number of casualties was so large in proportion to Australia’s
population, makes it a significant event for our nation. It has now come to
represent all our battles and the sacrifice the young men and women of
previous generations have made, to die for something beyond themselves.
Hence, we held a special commemoration on Wednesday at assembly. A
special thank you to our School Captains, Sarah Cook and Adam Crick and our
Vice Captains, Elana Krousaratis and Hamish Cameron. As it was the first
time we have ever held an ANZAC ceremony, most did not know what to
expect, so I must thank all our school community –staff, students and parents
for your enthusiastic participation. The Year 6 students will be participating in
a ceremony on Friday at Montmorency RSL and then the School Captains,
Adam and Sarah have been invited to attend the Monty RSL Centenary
Commemorative Service on Saturday.
Additionally, the Year 4s are also planning to attend the Eltham ANZAC
Day dawn service this Saturday morning and they are inviting all MSPS
families that are interested to join them. They will be meeting at 5.30am
at the corner of Main Rd and Panther Place. The Year 4 teachers (Mandy
Redfern, Chris Cameron and Tom Davis) have discussed this with the
students and emailed their parents. Students are encouraged to wear their
school uniform to the service.
We would love to see as many Monty South students/families/staff as
possible.
School Captain Badge Presentations
Next Wednesday at assembly we will be holding a special badge presentation
for all our School Captains including Sports Captains, Library Captains,
Performing Arts Captains, Visual Arts and the Sustainability Captains. The
Captains will be presented with their badges and all parents are invited to
attend the ceremony commencing at 3pm. Please note that the Junior School
Councillors and the House Captains will receive their badges at a later
assembly.

We held our Information Night for prospective 2016 parents last night. We
had a strong group in attendance and again this year, the number of places
sought are higher than we can accommodate. We will be informing 2016
applicants by early June if they have been successful or not. We ask that
siblings of current students due to commence Foundations/Prep in 2016 are
enrolled now.

MSPS Achievers
Congratulations to Matt Cook (5T) who wrote an article that you will
find featured in the Leader newspaper this week. Matt did a study of
his own family members who had gone to World War 1 and wrote
about his great, great, great uncles. It is a terrific article and we are extremely
proud of him.
Well done also to Bridget Chianta and Edie Nicolson for the confident manner
with which they led the school in singing the National Anthem at our special
assembly on Wednesday.

Baby News
Congratulations to Adam (5N) and Zack (1W) and mum Sarah and dad Kabir on the arrival of their brother
and son, Zayn. He was born on the 15th April. We extend to the family our very best wishes at this joyous
time.
ANZAC Day
The Year 6 students have written ANZAC poems. This poem by Sarah Cook is an example of the excellent
poems they wrote. Sarah’s poem will accompany the wreath that Sarah and Adam will lay at Monty RSL
on Saturday.
Sarah’s brother Matt wrote this piece about his great, great, great
uncles Henry, John and Alan. (it is in this week’s Leader newspaper)
RAP Update
Our school is currently developing a Reconciliation Action Plan to improve the
way we embrace and recognise Australia’s First People: their rich cultural
heritage, their resilience and their role in shaping Australia today.
We are forming a working group of individuals (parents, teachers, community
representatives) who are passionate about improving the way we work
towards reconciliation at our school.
Our first meeting will be on Wednesday the 6th of May at 7pm. If you would like
to be involved with this group and attend our first meeting, please RSVP Tara
on 0429 478 261 or email [email protected]
PARENTS AND FRIENDS –
BRICK PAVER FUNDRAISER
Have you forgotten to order your paver?
Don’t panic – the Parents and Friends Group are still
accepting orders.
The pavers are not only a great way to acknowledge your presence at the
school but they will make our boat area look absolutely FANTASTIC.
.
Chess Club
The Chess Club has returned for Term 2. The number of participants is
growing and new members are always welcome.
Chess Club takes place in the BER building on a Monday afternoon,
3.30pm to 4.30pm. Chess Club is run every Monday, except for the first
week of the term and the last week of the term.
If you are interested in becoming a member of Chess Club, please
contact/see Lee Nelson - Year 5, to book in and collect paperwork.
Just a final reminder that due to the large number of students now involved in the Chess Club, a sign
in/out sheet has been implemented. Students are signed in by Lee at the start of the session. Students
need to be signed out by their parents before leaving the school at the end of the session. Any students
booked into Out Of School Hours Care will be accompanied there by Lee.
Thank you.

Getting to Know Our Year 1 Team
Dale Weston
I have been teaching at Montmorency South since 2009, having taught in Year 5 & 6
until this year. I live locally, and have my whole life, having attended Monty South as
a child (I won’t tell you how many years ago!!). I love sport, especially basketball
and football and have played, coached and umpired with the Eltham Basketball Club.
My wife, Amy, and I have two children, Archer who is 3 and Imogen who is 1,
We also have a couple of fluffy children named Monty and Rosie.
Jill Morris
When I was 5 I lined up all of my dolls and tried to teach them how to read. It just
seemed to me that I was born to teach, it was that thing that I should do. On
completing my matriculation I went to work in the public service in accounts
payable. I soon found it uninspiring and finally went to Teacher’s College in
Geelong to fulfil my destiny.
In the late 60’s and early 70’s it was easy to move schools and we all did every 3
years. Before coming to Montmorency South Primary School I had been appointed
to 7 different schools where I spent from 1 to 5 years.
So my 24 years at Monty South is quite a marathon. It has been a wonderful place to come to every day.
The children are magnificent and the community very inclusive. It has always been a great joy to come to
school with this supportive and respectful atmosphere. I will miss it when I finally retire at the end of this
year. I promise I’m really going to do it this time.
Rosie Morton
I am really enjoying my second year at Monty South teaching Year 1. Before my
Diploma of Education I studied psychology at university – an area I still love learning
more about. I also love to travel and last year I was lucky enough to visit New York,
Mexico and Malaysia. Mexico was one of my favourite countries in the world and I
would love to see more of South and Central America in the future. When I’m not
teaching or traveling I enjoy going to the gym, cooking (and eating!) and reading. I
love learning about food and nutrition and experimenting with new healthy recipes.
I also like to go walking or running with my dog Izzy. She’s a Labrador x King Charles
Cavalier Spaniel and is very clever and energetic – I have lots of fun teaching her new tricks.
My name is Bianca Hrovat and this is my first year teaching, Ever! Many of the
children have recognized me over the years as I completed two years of preservice teaching here at Monty South.
I grew up in the Eltham area and attended Greenhills Primary before moving to
Perth for a few years with my family where I spent every day after school at the
beach. I have 2 beautiful dogs named Roxy and Harry at home which I love taking
for walks along the bike track.
My favorite place in the world to visit is Disneyland, Mickey and I are on a first
name basis! I love to travel, especially with family and friends so I can share the
amazing experiences. I tend to think I’m quite funny in the classroom but I’m sure
my students will tell you otherwise, oh well, GO DOGS!

This week in the kitchen…..
Welcome back to the kitchen for term 2.
This week in the kitchen our menu has been inspired by
Anzac day.
We have discussed the significance of rosemary, talked
about the food the soldiers ate and have smelt &
sampled ‘bully beef’ and Anzac hard tack.
Our menu consisted of herb and oat scones, corned
beef fritters, Dolma (Stuffed vegetables Turkish style), a
Mediterranean style salad and oat filled Anzac biscuits.
Please find the recipe for Anzac biscuits following in this edition of the Hoot.
Don’t forget to check out our Wiki page for all the other program recipes.
If you have not yet contacted me to participate as a volunteer for this term, it
is not too late.
Grannies, Grandpas and interested people are most welcome!
Please contact me, Cathryn Hulme on 0419 322 782.
In the garden:
Pumpkin harvest is in full swing as we start making room for our Autumn seedlings and we've been building some
fantastic smelling compost with donated pigeon poo, garden waste, food scraps and straw.
Quote of the week goes to Sarah Hulme, 'I never knew pigeon poo could be so......useful!'. That wasn't exactly the
adjective I was expecting to hear from Sarah!
The weekend chicken roster is at the office and has plenty of spots available. There are also spots for garden
volunteers, so feel free to contact Jenna on [email protected]
Happy Gardening!
Parent Helpers Training
Amy Duckworth and Monique Rankin will be running the Parent Helpers’ course on Tuesday 28th April
There will be one session in the afternoon and this will be repeated in the evening.
• Session 1 - 12.30-1:00
• Session 2 - 6-6.30
These sessions will be held in Room 9 (Amy’s classroom).
You should have received a note this week.
YEAR 4 Classroom Clippings
In year four, as part of our study of the ANZACs, we are learning to
write a diary as if we were involved in the war. We could be a soldier on
the battlefield, a nurse treating the injured or someone else at Gallipoli.
On Saturday, it is the 100 year anniversary of the ANZACS ( Australia &
New Zealand Army Corps). Many of us, including our teachers, are
planning to get up early and attend the dawn service at Eltham. We are
meeting at 5.30am on the corner of Main Rd and Panther Place. We
would like to see as many Monty South students as possible with their
families so please feel free to join us.

School Banking Account Opening Day
Pat the Dog is coming to assembly!!!
On Wednesday 6th May, Rose from CBA will be available to answer
any questions and open accounts for those who wish to join the
nearly 200 students at Monty South who bank with school banking.
We have raised $350 for our school so far just by banking our own
money!
Rose will be in the foyer of the gym after assembly.
Remember - school banking day is WEDNESDAY.
FROM THE LIBRARY
It is with great excitement that I can tell you we are back in
business in the library. Thank you to my wonderful "roomies"
6W, 6C, Laura and Neil. I wish you every happiness in your
new rooms. They certainly are very swish and cosy.
With Anzac Day coming up, I have been reading to Grades 4,
5 and 6 a beautiful book called "The Red Poppy" by David
Hill followed by a song of the same name. I can't even begin
to tell you how incredibly proud I was with ALL the students
as they showed the utmost respect listening and reflecting
on the story and song. We had great discussions with each other after and we all felt such emotion. We are very
lucky at this school to have such wonderful, caring students. It gave me goosebumps.
Once again this year we will be having a Book Fair to help celebrate Education Week. We have previously used
Scholastics, but this year we have decided to support our local community so we are using Vipa Books which is
located across from our school. The fair will be held on Monday the 11th of May until Wednesday the 13th of
May. It will run from 3.30pm until 4.30pm in the library.
We need lots of parent helpers, so if you are able to help please see Clare Bear in the library or email
me on [email protected]
A HUGE thank you to Rebecca Attard (Cooper Sikkes’ mum) for making the brilliant posters for the library. I feel
thoroughly spoilt. The kids and I just love them. They make such a difference to the look of the library.
A HUGE thank you also to Bianca Dhollander (Jayden and Dylan MacKay’s mum) and family for the beautiful painting
they did for me for the library. I am the beautiful blonde owl in the picture reading a book to my little owls with the
quote "To read, to dream, to imagine, to learn, to grow". The words say it all. Thank you for such a thoughtful,
generous gift.
If you have any spare time and would like to help in the library to re-shelve books, I would be very
grateful. Just pop into the library and see me.
This year’s Library Captains are Emily Flather and Poppy Roberts. Poppy wasn't able to attend assembly this week so
Emily had the job of speaking on the microphone for the first time and did it all by herself. She was very nervous and
wasn't sure she wanted to do it, but she showed tremendous resilience and soldiered on. Emily I am just so proud of
you. You did a fantastic job. I hope you are very proud of yourself too.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend with your family.
Lest We Forget.

2015 Junior School Council Representatives
We are all very excited about our first meeting of JSC.
In the first meeting we introduced ourselves and talked about what we will be doing throughout the

felt much more comfortable when we started.
We would like to congratulate all of the new JSC representatives.
