ANZAC 2015 We started Term Two with our ANZAC Assembly. A time to pause, reflect and remember those who have fought for our country. With the 100th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli this year it was a very special event and our congratulations go to Mr Guthrie for putting together such a meaningful ceremony. Highlights this year were the story of a local Kalamunda man who went away to war, told through documents projected by two Year 12 History students, Bradley Smithies and Maya Simpson. The beautiful tones of the choir and moving music by the band also added to the atmosphere. Mr Lindsay Pilcher, from the Darling Range RSL presented a limited edition memorial plaque to the school and Aiden Law-Davis played the bugle presented to him by RSL president Mr Graham Edwards at the Senior School Assembly at the end of last term. Our school was the first of twenty schools with music programs who have been selected to participate in the RSL centenary program to encourage students to learn about the instrument and its history. Aidan was the first student to be enrolled in the accredited bugler program which will involve passing an exam on the correct execution of several bugle calls, including the Last Post and general knowledge questions about ceremonial protocol and history. Aiden Law-Davis, along with Leah Addison, Amberley Bradley, Brody Honey, Eion John, Ed Jones, Chris Kirkman, Rachel Kirkman, Eilish Law-Davis and Daniel Taylor, will tour with the Perth Hills and Wheatbelt Band to Europe later this term. During the tour, “Australians at War”, the bugle presented at Kalamunda SHS will be played by Aiden at many battlefield ceremonies including Gallipoli, Omaha Beach, Villers Bretonneuw, Arnhem and Fromelles, including The Last Post at the 30 000 performance at the Menin Gate in Belgium. Our school has a strong connection with our military past, with several students and staff members being previously selected to participate in the Premier’s ANZAC Day tours in recent years. This year student, BJ Nash, and History teacher, Miss Free, were members of the tour.
