Principal: Mr David Mills NEWSLETTER No. 5 HOUSE ATHLETICS On Wednesday, a warm but windy day, the schools Athletics Carnival was held at Meadowglen, in Epping. Though attendance was slightly down on previous years, participation was up. It was great to see the large numbers of students participating in events, whether they were track/field/novelties or helped make up numbers for relays. In addition the student’s behaviour was exemplary. They are to be commended for their efforts on the day. Thanks to all staff who took on roles in running the events and to the Sport & Recreation students for assisting on the day. The Business School based students did a fantastic job assisting Mrs Wate in recording and organising results. Final results were: 1st – Piper 2nd – Fraser 3rd – Ridley 4th – Hickey Age Champions were: 13 year – Toni Bootland and Trey Frazer 14 year – Grace Dicker & Andrew Dowell 15 year – Macey Gibbs & Charles Potter 16 Year – Isobel Isherwood Allen & Josh Vilinskis 17 year – Jade Tate & Bronson Phillips 20 year - Grace Coppinger/Rhiana Hanson & Hayden Phillips. Aspire - Strive - Achieve 1 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Every Day Counts in the education of our children. Literacy: learning we all share. How much reading has your child done at home in the past two weeks? The start to Term 2 has been very smooth with students quickly getting back into their learning. It was pleasing to see both staff and students returning from their holidays bright, cheerful and ready to commence the term. The College has had some leadership changes and I would like to welcome Ms Kellie McKernan as our new Acting Leading Teacher in the Junior School area, replacing Mr Matt Rose. Kellie is also the year 8 Coordinator; even though Kellie will no longer be the Year 7 Co-ordinator she will still be overseeing the Year 7 level in her new capacity. Mr Matt Rose has taken up the Leading Teacher Curriculum position to replace Mrs Vanessa Morrow who is on family leave. Ms Belinda McKenzie is the new Year 7 Co-ordinator, along with Mr Powell. I thank all staff who applied for these positions, in particular the successful staff members, and look forward to seeing them grow in their new roles. The College is extremely pleased with the success of the recent parent/family interviews, particularly the online booking and reports. Parent feedback has been extremely positive and we will be continuing with this practice. The College staff are currently assessing the interview night, to decide on either one night or two nights. We will keep parents informed as we adjust to the COMPASS program and adjust our operating systems accordingly. On Friday 24 April, the Broadford Secondary College and Broadford Primary School students and staff will hold a joint ceremony to celebrate ANZAC Day. This will take place at 12.40pm at the Broadford Stadium. In May, a team of outside auditors will be undertaking a review of our practices. This process occurs every three years as a normal part of the College’s life; we can then develop our strategic plans and annual implementation plans from the review’s recommendations. Selected parents or carers will be invited to be part of the process. A random list will be generated from our data bases and you may be contacted. I encourage parents, if you are contacted, to please participate in the review as we map out the direction of the College for the next three years. It is with great pleasure that I introduce our new staff members to the College community. We have Ms Katrina Adamo replacing Mrs Vanessa Morrow who is going on family leave and Ms Ellen Glover who is taking up a teaching position in the VCAL and Humanities area. Last but not least, we wish Mrs Vanessa Morrow all the best for the future. Starting a new family is a very exciting time for all. We look forward to seeing the newest addition to the Morrow family in the very near future. Dave Mills. NEWS from the OFFICE At the end of Term 1 student accounts were sent home to families. These accounts showed student charges for the year (excluding sport, camps & excursions). Payment of your account assists the College in providing the very best education program possible and we encourage all families to contribute to the College in this way. Payments can be made by instalments over the course of the year for most charges. However, items such as VET, bus fares, camps and excursions MUST be paid by the due date provided, otherwise your student is at risk of exclusion from these activities. There are still a number of school photos in the General Office that have not been collected. If you have paid for your student’s photo please ensure it is are collected as soon as possible. The school has student photo ID cards available to purchase for $2.00 from the General Office. These are a useful form of identification for all students to carry in their wallets. The implementation of COMPASS access by parents has been a great success. To continue this communication stream, we ask that all families check that the email address you have provided to the school is current and all phone numbers are up to date. Mrs Faye Martin Acting Business Manager. Aspire - Strive - Achieve 2 SPORT NEWS SOUTHERN RANGES SWIMMING Last term a group of some 40 swimmers and several Sport & Recreation students travelled to Seymour to compete in the Southern Ranges Swimming Finals. While we did not win the event overall, the students performed admirably and with enthusiasm. We do come up against some very strong swimming schools that draw their competitors from local clubs. Jordan Chibnall ‘AWESOME’! were, in Jordan’s words, Although the girls were all weary by the last game they tried hard and were good sports. It was a great day, well done girls. Mr Dave Dixon Coach. REINING CHAMPIONSHIPS The commitment of the students in their events was outstanding. Also, the willingness of the younger students to swim up in relays to ensure the older groups could enter a team was fantastic. Particular congratulations go to Madeleine Rhodes of Year 10 who won the 50, 100 & 200 metre Freestyle races and the 50 metre Breaststroke in her age group. Madeleine was also a member of the 16 Year female 4 x 50 Freestyle relay which was victorious. The rest of the team comprised Bronwyn Mills, Claire McKenzie and Takara Mitchell. Madeleine qualified for the Hume Finals but was unable to compete due to a commitment with Kilmore Swimming Club which required her to be in Darwin at the time. Thanks must go the VET Sport & Recreation students who did a great job assisting on the day. Well done to all students. YEAR 7 & 8 GIRLS TENNIS – Term 1 Round Robin Sports Three teams of keen tennis players represented BSC at Euroa Lawn Tennis Club. The girls tried hard all day and despite their shock when they discovered that the lawn courts did not make the ball bounce, they were soon returning the serve. BSC 1, with Takara Mitchell, Ella McWhinney, Rukaiya Motin and Ashley Harris played strongly in all games and were runners up to FCJ in the Year 7 competition. The girls’ good knowledge of tennis rules was a great help to many of the umpires on the day. Ashley was particularly good at directing inexperienced players through a ‘tie break’. In the second week of March Mikayla Smith competed in the Victorian State Reining Championships. This show was the biggest that Mikki has competed in with over 400 competitors coming from all over Victoria and New South Wales. Most of her classes went for over 2 hours due to the number of competitors, one for 5 hours as there were 48!! Congratulations to Mikki who did very well for her first state show, with a reserve champion for Reining Australia Green Rider level 1, 3rd for Victorian Reining Horse Association Beginner Reiner, 6th for Youth 14-18 (with only 2.5pts sepperating 1st place to Mikkis 6th). BSC 2, with Charlyse Greeno, Hayley Segec and Krista Blyth-Parsons were enthusiastic and never gave up all day despite being a player down. The Year 8 girls were very competitive and were placed second only to Mansfield by 2 games out of 25. Alisha Munro and Jess Nicolaison were a formidably pair ensuring that any ball that made it across the net was returned at a great pace. The second pair of Ebony Hinchcliff and star ‘rooky’ We wish Mikki well when she competes in the Reining Australia National Championships in Tamworth NSW in September. 3 JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS Welcome back to another school term to all Junior Students. I hope you all had an enjoyable break and are looking forward to the busy term ahead. There have been changes to the Junior School Management Team this term and we welcome Ms Belinda McKenzie who is replacing me as Year 7 Co-ordinator. Congratulations and we all look forward to working with you. We also congratulate Mr Matt Rose as he takes on the responsibility of Curriculum Co-ordinator of the College. A big thankyou to Mr Rose for all his hard work and the long hours he put into the role of Junior School Coordinator, the Junior School Management Team will sadly miss him. Which leaves me - I have replaced Mr Rose as the Junior School Coordinator and Year 8 Co-ordinator. The Team is now: Year 7 – Mr Chris Powell and Ms Belinda McKenzie Year 8 – Ms Kellie Mckernan Year 9 – Mr Jason Stradella Years 7, 8 and 9 level assemblies were held this past week to remind students of our school rules and values. Co-ordinators also emphasised uniform expectations and the repercussions of relocation. A reminder to parents that the junior students have a relocation policy where students must self-report to their Co-ordinator if they are relocated. Three relocations in one term results in a suspension. The uniform policy is currently being enforced across all years. Students who are not in full uniform for any reason need to report to the conference room before 9.00am to receive a uniform pass. Please remember that hoodies, canvas shoes, caps, beanies, leggings/skins are not part of the uniform even on PE days. I must emphasise the students who wear leggings or skins to school will be receiving further consequences. Also facial piercings must be clear or less than 1mm. No bolts or rings. It was great to see so many students participating on Athletics Day - dressed up in their House colours and joining in to earn points for their House. Well done to all who competed and joined in on the day! Big congratulations to Piper House who were worthy winners and demonstrated the Piper House spirit! Well done to Mr Hickson and the Piper Leaders including the Golden Moths and Junior John Pipers for getting their team across the line. Go PIPER! Year 7 families will be receiving a letter home next week in regards to the annual camp. We have recently changed the venue for the Year 7 camp. We are excited to announce we will be heading into the Melbourne CBD for an activities packed camp! Keep an eye out for that letter, as it will provide you with all the information needed at this stage. I also want to highlight our plan to improve communication with parents/guardians - using social media to reach out to parents. The Broadford Secondary College app is available for (free) download. It is available for both iPhone and Android products. In addition, the school has a Junior School Facebook page. Simply search and like ‘BSC Junior School’ on Facebook. This page will focus more on the day-to-day goings on at the school as well as recognising student achievement. If you have any questions about this term please don't hesitate to contact your child’s Advocate, Year Level Co-ordinators or me. Ms Kellie McKernan Junior School Co-ordinator. SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS Due dates for Semester 1 Work Exam dates - midyear Applying for extensions or change of assessment date Tute Night Anzac Day Final Round Robin Dealing with change We hope that students had a refreshing holiday, and that they have returned ready to move up a gear. There are 7 weeks until the teachers need to begin to write reports, so there will be many SACs to be completed in this time. Fortunately there are no mid-year exams for Year 12 students apart from the GAT, (Wednesday 10 June) but final course work and SACs will be due on 11 June for all year levels. This is the last date for resubmission if necessary, so it is recommended that all drafts and first submissions are completed at least a week prior to this. There are special procedures in place if students require extensions for SACs. The application forms are available from Miss Reid, and these must be submitted along with the necessary evidence before it can be approved. 4 Year 11 mid-year exams are in Week 8 starting June 31st and the Year 10 mid-year exams begin on June 4th. To assist students to prepare, the first of the VCE Tute Nights will be happening next Wednesday 22nd April. Check and see if your teachers are coming, and make use of the time to catch up and prepare for all of your assessment tasks. Welcome to all students in Year 10 who are completing a VCE subject. SPORTS UNIFORM For all Year 7 students it is compulsory to wear the new sports uniform - no black shorts or track pants. Students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12 have this year to transition into the new items. In 2016 it will be compulsory for all students to be wearing the new sports uniform. With the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing on ANZAC Day next Saturday, our student leaders will be attending dawn services in the local communities. It is important that we never forget the sacrifices and hard work of our Armed Services. These individuals have been selfless in their work during times of war and times of peace. They have battled to protect the rights that we enjoy, but in many peace keeping missions, they have battled to protect the rights of strangers. What they have achieved has often been superhuman. It is fitting that we recognise and value such dedication and selflessness. Having spoken to returned veterans at such services, they are extremely touched to know that they are not forgotten. Our uniform supplier, All Things Uniform are stocked with the new track pants. VCE students can often find themselves at the end of their 13 years of school feeling lost and wondering where their life is heading from here. It is a time of tense waiting and anxiety. They can feel that they are being judged, and on a number that only measures a small part of who they are. People graduating from University with a degree and waiting for a job, people leaving a traineeship, people returning from a posting overseas and at many other stages of their life, personal and professional, can feel the same way. This is common in any transition. It is important to learn to deal with this tension, without letting it get you down. Nervousness can be terrifying as they long for the security of the past or exciting as students look forward to the changes to come. If anxiety builds, please contact either the school Welfare Team or the co-ordinators so that we can assist. Step 3 This term is also the last opportunity for students in Year 11 and 12 to participate in interschool Round Robin Sports. Please make sure that you have signed up if you are interested in participating. Senior School Team. SKOOLBAG APP Important information is being circulated to mobile phones and devices via our “Skoolbag” App. Have you downloaded it yet? Search for “Broadford Secondary College” in the App/Play Store. HEAD LICE! We have had a case of head lice (nits!) reported. Please check your child’s hair and treat if necessary. Head lice can be controlled but it takes a systematic approach. Step1 Step 2 Step 4 Step 5 Comb inexpensive hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair. This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around; Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue; Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs; If lice or eggs are found, the child should be treated; If the child has been treated recently and only hatched eggs are found, you may not have to treat since the eggs could be from the old infection. There is no need to make a huge effort to clean the entire house. Only the pillowcase requires specific laundering. YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE All Year 10 students are required to complete one week of Work Experience in 2015. This will take place in Term 3 from: Monday 14 September to Friday 18 September This is a valuable opportunity for students to experience work in their possible chosen career. Students should start looking at opportunities NOW as there are 120 Year 10 students who will all be seeking placements at that time. The Department of Education & Training provides Work Cover for the students, subject to the relevant form being completed and signed. The school can offer some assistance but it is really down to the students to organise their own placements. 5 WELLBEING NEWS Mother's Day/Significant Other Woman Afternoon Tea This is more than the amount a child or an adult needs. Yet most adolescents only get about seven or eight hours. Some get less. Regularly not getting enough sleep leads to chronic sleep deprivation. This can have effects on a teenager’s life, including reduced academic performance at school. Effects of lack of sleep: The Mums and Significant Women in our student's lives are invited to share an Afternoon Tea at the school on Thursday 7th May. Our school community would like to acknowledge the relationships our students share with the Significant Women in their life and offer a little pampering on the afternoon. Date: Thursday 7th may Time: 3.45pm Place: BSC We hope to see you there!! PARENT FORUM REMINDER!! We would like to invite all our parents and guardians to our "Parent as Partners" Parent Forum. When: Where: Time: Thursday 21st May Broadford Secondary College Hall 7pm-8pm Our guest speaker is Bernie Geary who is the Victorian Commissioner for Children and Young People. Bernie brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion in working towards achieving good outcomes and opportunities for young people. We are quite privileged to have Bernie present at our school and hope you are able to attend. Agenda items will largely be around the influence of 'family' on education and how best to create opportunities for your child/young person. A light supper will be provided. If you have any questions or queries, please don't hesitate to contact a member of the Wellbeing Team on 5784-1200. IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP Adolescents (teenagers) need between 9 and 10 hours of sleep every night. Regularly not getting enough sleep (chronic sleep deprivation) can affect a teenager's academic and sporting performance and may increase their risk of emotional problems such as depression. Even 30 minutes of extra sleep each night makes a difference The developing brain of a teenager needs between 9 and 10 hours of sleep every night. The effects of chronic (ongoing) sleep deprivation may include: Concentration difficulties Mentally ‘drifting off’ in class Shortened attention span Memory impairment Poor decision making Lack of enthusiasm Moodiness and aggression Depression Risk-taking behaviour Slower physical reflexes Clumsiness, which may result in physical injuries Reduced sporting performance Reduced academic performance Increased number of ‘sick days’ from school because of tiredness Preventing sleep deprivation – tips for parents Try not to argue with your teenager about bedtime. Instead, discuss the issue with them. Together, brainstorm ways to increase their nightly quota of sleep. Suggestions include: Allow your child to sleep in on the weekends. Encourage an early night every Sunday. A late night on Sunday followed by an early Monday morning will make your child drowsy for the start of the school week. Decide together on appropriate time limits for any stimulating activity such as homework, television or computer games. Encourage restful activities during the evening, such as reading. Avoid early morning appointments, classes or training sessions for your child if possible. Sleep research suggests that a teenager needs between nine and 10 hours of sleep every night. 6 Help your child to better schedule their after-school commitments to free up time for rest and sleep. Assess your child’s weekly schedule together and see if they are overcommitted. Help them to trim activities. Encourage your child to take an afternoon nap after school to help recharge their battery, if they have time. Work together to adjust your teenager’s body clock. ZANE’S WORLD imagine I could have beaten the lot of you – not! To be honest, I reckon I could at least hold my own in a ’tug of war’ but I don’t think it was on the list of events. I’d have a go at Gum Boot throwing but can you imagine how difficult it is to throw a boot if you don’t have thumbs? Apparently I’ve been a bit ‘on the nose’ since the hols. Seriously, I take up swimming (in the dam) to try and get a bit fit and then people complain about my smell. Thankfully for all of you, Tracy (my great friend and supporter from ‘Tracy’s Grooming’) washed me today and I smell like a Princess. Personally, I kinda liked the dam smell. Immunisations are coming up soon. Year 8s have to get their forms back by Monday 27th or you won’t get to join me in the Hall. I love needle day – I get to lounge around on the mats, recovering with all of you. You get the needle and I get the pat, sounds good to me. Open Night is coming up on the 29th April. Those days when we get to invite parents and other potential new people into the school to show them how cool this place is, are some of my faves. I get to show off, parade around and get lots of pats … what’s not to love about being part of this school. Ok, I’m off to revise my ‘non essential clauses’ before the English test. I think I’ve used them correctly in this article but I may need to brush up on my parenthesis before the next article. So much to do and so little time. Catchya next time. Bye for now, Woof COMMUNITY NEWS Boring, boring, boring, boring … there’s not enough ‘borings’ in the world to describe my hols. I hope yours were better. I did some swimming and went and watched some of you play footy last weekend (Go Broadford!) but otherwise, DULL! I hung out with my old mate, Maggie, but as you can see in the picture, she’s a Hawks supporter so we don’t talk footy too much coz she spends the whole time bragging – that’s boring too. Anyways, enough about me (for a moment anyway), how about the Aths results? Good on all of you Piper athletes! I heard about some of the amazing performances and how some kids looked like gazelles, as they flew down the track; somewhat like myself, I imagine, had I been there but I hurt my foot on Monday and so I was left here at school to recover. It’s a shame really, as I Broadford Football Netball Club Players wanted for under 18.5 Preliminary finalists 2014 Training Tuesday & Thursday nights Come and join a great family club with excellent facilities and have some fun. The Broadford Football Netball Club (BFNC) officially announce that Brodie Holland and Russell Robertson will be attending the Broadford FNC Presidents Lunch at Harley Hammond Reserve on Saturday 2nd May. This is our first home game for season 2015. They will then both line up for a 'one off' game with the Broadford Roos against reigning Premiers, Romsey. The club would like to see as many supporters as possible take the opportunity to see both players in the Blue and White. Grab your beanies and scarves and come and witness what should be a great game of footy. 7 JAPANESE SISTER SCHOOL VISIT HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED Are you interested in hosting a Japanese student? 20 students from our sister school in Japan- Katsuta High School – will be visiting our school early in term 3. What’s involved? You need to be able to provide food and accommodation for the student(s) for 4 nights. (Saturday 1 August to Wednesday 5 August). My home is too small – No it isn’t. Japanese homes are much smaller than ours. The students are used to small spaces. We don’t have a spare room/bed. They can share a room/ sleep on the floor/couch. We don’t speak Japanese. The students are here to practise their English. If you can slow down your speech /avoid too much slang/ play a decent game of charades – you’ll be just fine. We don’t have time to take them places – The students will fit in with what you are doing on the weekend (shopping, sport, playstation etc.). A brief outline of the program The Katsuta students will arrive in Broadford on Saturday 1 August. Host families will be asked to pick up their student(s) from Broadford Secondary College at around 3pm. They will spend the weekend with you and your family. The main purpose of the homestay is to experience everyday life with an Australian family, and to communicate in English. They are here to improve their language skills, and they do that by talking to you. It is always a bit awkward at first – it takes a while for them to adjust to the Australian accent! They learn best by watching, listening, helping you around the home and taking part in games and activities. Some good ice-breaking activities: Card games (Uno etc.), board games, jigsaws Helping with setting tables, cleaning up, cooking. A home tour –it’s really important to show them how to use the bathroom/shower. If you’re on tank water, indicate that you have a time limit on showers. To avoid peak hour rush in the bathroom, you may ask the student(s) to shower in the evening rather than the morning. Introduce them to your pets and animals. Show them the Milky Way. Take them to the supermarket to help you shop for groceries and find out about their favourite foods. On Monday and Tuesday the students will attend B.S.C for the day. They will take part in classes, tour the school and present information about Japanese culture to Broadford students. Host families are asked to provide lunch for the Katsuta students. The students will depart Broadford Secondary College on Wednesday 5 August, at 9am. This is a brief outline of the program, and more detailed information will follow. Please feel free to contact me with any questions/queries/concerns that you have. Stephanie Paton (Japanese teacher). Phone: 5784 1200 8 NEWS from the AP'S DESK Welcome back to Term 2. A big thank you to all parents who attended the Parent-Teacher interviews last term. We were extremely pleased with the uptake on COMPASS and encourage any parents who have not acquired their login details to contact the General Office.
