Planning and Implementing a Play-based
Curriculum in the Junior Classroom
Maths Problem Solving:
A process, not a product!
This online course focuses on a process led approach to maths problem solving across all
class levels. It includes an exploration of maths language and maths thinking. It looks at the
school environment and the curriculum with Maths eyes. It presents a series of problem solving
strategies, a tool kit and a framework to support maths problem solving. It also explores the role of the
teacher as facilitator of the process, eliciting, supporting and extending maths thinking and understanding and the
role of the teacher in designing problems that are real and centred in pupils’ own experiences.
The course is enhanced by video footage of various approaches in action in the classroom.
It also suggests a variety of approaches and methodologies, including peer tutoring, to support the areas of literacy

This online course explores the pupil behaviour/learning dynamic and the influence of
pupil/teacher interaction on behaviour. It appraises how positive learning behaviour can be
supported through a whole school approach.
Leadership focused courses.
Classroom management to promote positive behaviour is explored as is the importance of teaching positive
behaviour. Strategies to deal with inappropriate individual behaviour are appraised and possible links between
behaviour and specific learning needs/difficulties/disabilities are explored.

CEOL Ireland Stages 1-8 Programmes
These online courses by CEOL Ireland will lead teachers through the Ceol Ireland Music
Programmes for each particular class level – Junior Infants to 6th Class. Each programme
fully complements all strands of the Music curriculum for the particular class level and
delivers a complete music programme for an entire school year including:
• 30 weeks of progressive lesson plans, with support resource materials.
• Video tutorials that take the teacher through how to teach all the lessons.
• Online access to the course and support for the 2015/2016 school year.

SALF: Self-Assessment & Learning Folders
Using Assessment for Learning strategies, this multimedia rich online course clearly outlines
the steps involved in creating, compiling and completing Self-Assessment and Learning
Folders with Junior, Middle and Senior classes in primary schools. It includes strategies
for recording children’s progress across all curriculum subjects, personal interest surveys for
children, together with a challenging and engaging project work menu designed to provide
differentiated starting points. The course also outlines how the folders support the involvement of parents and others in
the assessment and learning process. SALF provides a concrete link that bridges communication with an individual child,
his/her peers and all who engage with the child. The folders are used as an ‘Assessment for Learning’ strategy where
pupils document why and how they ‘come to know’ what makes for a good piece of work in a given area. They then use
those criteria when making judgments about what and why to select certain pieces for inclusion at any given time.

Newly Appointed Principals Residential Blended Course
Managing Behaviour: STOP, THINK, DO!
The online modules on what is meant by leadership and leading a school prepare participants for
more in-depth face-to-face sessions on the role and responsibilities of the principal, school structures
and administration, legislation governing schools, people management and communication skills, delegating and
empowering others and self-care and support.
The all inclusive cost of this course is €180 and will run from 19th - 21st August 2015.
Supporting School Leaders – Blended Course
NEW!
This blended course seeks to support existing school leaders. The online modules will reflect
on the meaning of leadership and the challenges of leading the school.
The face-to face sessions will look at current challenges and trends, administration, people
management and delegation. The sessions will explore conditions of employment and how
changes impinges on school Leadership. The face-to-face element will be held in the INTO Learning
Centre in 38, Parnell Square, Dublin 1 from 1st - 3rd July 2015.
The online course in Early Childhood education aims to re-acquaint teachers with the work of
the infant classes.
• It looks at teaching methodologies and gives sample lessons in each of the methodologies.
• It gives a rationale for play, describes how to set up a play sequence and how to use role-play
in the infant classes.
• It examines some of the content objectives for literacy and provides examples of how to implement them.
• It also focuses on oral language games, classroom management strategies, classroom organisation and assessment.
Participants will listen to podcasts, examine video footage, read text, access websites and have
the opportunity to post thoughts and reflections to a forum.

Innovative assessment for literacy and numeracy
Strategies for supporting pupils will be explored and the area of administration and record keeping will
be examined. Participants will also consider how the strategies explored could support school improvement within the
context of School Self-evaluation.

Moving from Mainstream to LSRT

This face-to-face course will introduce the concept of a Balanced Literacy Framework in the
primary school. Participants will experience workshops in reading and writing at all levels of
the primary school and will be enabled to embed literacy skills within reading and writing
workshops. The course will be held in the newly built primary school in Barntown, Wexford and
be delivered by trained facilitators in the Write to Read methodology including Dr. Eithne Kennedy of

Literacy in the junior classes
This online course explores a wide range of early literacy skills including:

It also examines the role of play in relation to literacy learning and the implementation of a guided reading
programme which includes active literacy centres. It addresses teaching methodologies, classroom organisation

This multimedia rich online course outlines an evidence-based behaviour management
framework and approach called ‘Stop, Think, Do!’ It is well recognised that pupil behaviour has
a significant impact on teaching and learning at individual, classroom and whole school level.
Pupils who have the skills to manage their emotions and behaviours can better understand
the learning process and relate more constructively to their peers, teachers and school/home
communities. The ‘Stop Think Do!’ approach supports pupil behaviour, learning and motivation through
the explicit and implicit teaching of social skills. Course materials explain this approach to behaviour management
contextualising it, in particular, within the SPHE and English curricula.

Autism - Inclusion in Mainstream

This multimedia rich online course will provide teachers with the necessary knowledge
and understanding of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) to feel confident when including a
child with a mainstream within a mainstream school. Participants will gain knowledge and
understanding of such topics as:
• Contemporary understanding of ASD diagnosis.

Beyond 2020: Using Technology in the Primary
Classroom
This online course is aimed at teachers who are comfortable users of IT in the classroom.
It is not suitable for beginners. To undertake the course you need to be familiar and
comfortable with email and browsing web pages, unzipping resources, downloading and
trialing web based applications and tools such as, Google Maps, Google Sites, Web 2.0 applications
etc., and ith creating resources and uploading them to an external forum. This will be a challenging and rewarding
course for its intended audience but is not suitable for beginner or only occasional ICT users. Topics covered include:
Programming with Scratch, Cloud Computing, Web 2.0 Applications, Google Maps & Scoilnet Maps in the classroom
and Website Creation with Weebly.

Using ICT to Support Literacy and Numeracy
of Pupils with SEN
This online course aims to explore how ICT can be used to support the literacy and numeracy
development of pupils experiencing learning difficulties and gifted pupils. The course will
explore in a practical hands-on way in terms accessible ICT tools and practical teaching strategies
with particular reference to free and open source software and internet facilities. Modules include
details on specific literacy and numeracy online resources, creating digital resources and utilising multimedia packages. It is
aimed at both the mainstream classroom and learning support teacher. This course is supported by PDST technology.
