Messages from the Principal
Dear Parents, Students and Parishioners,
LENT
As we continue our journey through the season of LENT, we reflect on the ways Christians celebrated it in the past and
how we as Christians today, use it as a time to make changes in our lives. The traditions of observing LENT in some
way recaptures the period in Jesus’ life when he spent 40 days alone in the desert contemplating the task that lay
ahead of Him. Christians today are invited to use the 40 days of LENT to evaluate their lives and adjust them in order
to become more generous, compassionate and prayerful people. We are give the opportunity to look carefully at our
lives and identify attitudes and situations that perhaps do not reflect the Gospel values that we believe. In schools,
much of how LENT is celebrated is focused on helping children to understand what this season of the Church’s year is
all about, and how they can use it to help them become better people and grow closer to God.
“NO APOLOGIES, NO EXCUSES”
School Zone Parking Enforcement Program – “No Apologies, No Excuses” Ballina Shire Council would like to remind
all schools – including teachers, parents/carers and children of parking restrictions in place around your school. The
Council’s School Zone Parking and Enforcement Program has now commenced for the 2015 school year. The Program
aims to provide a safer environment for children attending schools within the Ballina Shire and to minimise the unlawful
parking in and around school zones. Council Rangers monitor school zones during the morning and afternoon periods
and are present in Council marked and unmarked vehicles. They will be observing vehicle movements and taking photographic evidence of illegal parking and stopping in prohibited and restricted zones. Please see the two pages towards the back of the Newsletter for more information.
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
Every school is on a never ending quest for continual improvement. Excellent school communities attempt to explore
every avenue so that they can to do things better than they are currently doing. Whilst Holy Family is in a very good
place in regards to all spheres of school life and the opportunities we offer our students, we are also conscious of the
fact that we too can do better. Recently Nick Houghton and I attended a workshop at the Catholic Schools Office (CSO)
in Lismore facilitated by a consulting organisation call "Insight SRC", which the CSO has engaged for the next four
years to work with every school in the diocese on school improvement. This project will add a great deal of value to
what we already do at Holy Family. The “tools,” which Insight SRC supply, will assist in identifying what we are doing
really well and areas which we may need to address. This project will involve the surveying of all staff, 60 students from
Years Five and Six, and 60 randomly chosen parents. Soon these parents will receive a survey package and a followup phone call from the school. I urge the parents chosen to please complete and return their surveys to either the
school office or post them directly to “Insight SRC” as soon as possible. Your involvement in this project is very important and greatly valued.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY
On Tuesday, 17th March 2015 students do not attend school on this day. The staff will be participating in a professional development day away from Holy Family. If your child/ren needs supervision for the day, please email Kate
Varcin immediately: [email protected]

PROJECT COMPASSION 2015
Heartfelt thanks to all families who donated packets of rice for our “Rice and Water
Lunch” on Tuesday 24th March. Due to your generous response and support we
now have a sufficient quantity of rice for our school community. However, there are
still classes seeking parents to cook their rice at school or who can provide a rice
cooker. If you are able to help out in anyway with this, could you please contact your
child’s teacher.
Each child is asked to donate a gold coin to support our Lenten Mission Initiative
– Project Compassion. The money will be placed on a coin chain set up on the
Stage Area.
On the day, the children will need to bring a spoon, a plastic cup or dish and a bottle of water. The children are able
to have any food at afternoon tea but are encouraged to eat fruit.
Finally by taking action and contributing financially to Project Compassion, staff and students have the opportunity to help
alleviate the poverty and injustice that so many others experience.
This week we meet Sarita who was struggling to grow enough food for her family on her tiny farm plot in Nepal. In
2007, with the assistance of a program run by Caritas Nepal, she started a fish-raising business with 11 others. Now,
they have a life-long source of food and income.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2015 and help people in rural Nepal create a life-long source of food
and income to benefit entire communities.
SCHOOL MASS
Our next School Mass will be held on Thursday, 19th March at 9.30am at St Francis Xavier’s Church,
Ballina. It will be prepared by the children and teachers of Year Three. All parents and friends are warmly invited to come along to be part of this Eucharistic Celebration.
FIRST EUCHARIST REFLECTION DAY

Eucharist. It will be led by Miss WInkler and Mrs O’Dwyer with the assistance of the Year Three teachers, Mr Campbell and
Mrs McManus.
PREPARATION FOR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
This weekend, children preparing for the sacrament of First Eucharist will be given a special blessing
at Mass. Then next Sunday, 22nd March, these boys and girls will receive the consecrated body of
Jesus for the first time, at a special Mass held at St Francis Xavier’s Church at 11 o’clock. Please

FRIDAY March 27th 2015
Are you photo ready?
Checklist: Compulsory Uniform
● Navy Polo Shirt
● Senior shirt for Year 6
● Navy skirt for girls
● Navy drill shorts (not sport/taslon)
● Holy Family school socks (preferably new navy with red stripe)
● All black school shoes
DO NOT WEAR—Checked Dress or White Polo Tops
Full Covered School Footwear
Over the last few years some girls have been wearing black leather strapped footwear to school instead of the traditional fully covered black leather footwear. Apart
from the added protection and safety provided by the fully covered shoes, they
also support the foot when students are involved in physical activity.
We are conscious of the costs which have already been by outlayed by some families in purchasing these strapped shoes, however from next year the fully covered,
black leather shoes will be the only option for school footwear.
Uniform Shop Closed
The Uniform Shop will not be open on Tuesday March 17th which is a Staff Development Day and a pupil free day.
New Navy Sock Orders
A yellow order form for the new navy socks has been given out to the eldest child in each family. Please order your new socks
ASAP as we would like the children to be wearing the new socks in the school photos which will be taken on
Friday 27 March. Size 13-3 socks are now out of stock but they will be available in April.

Multicultural Family Fun Night
The Multicultural Family Fun Night is fast approaching. It will take place at Holy Family School in
Week 8 on Wednesday 18th March from 5 -7:30pm.
There will be exciting multicultural and old favourite games, drumming, delicious food and summer time picnic
blanket catch up time on the school oval. Yummy multicultural foods will be on sale (including gluten and dairy free
options) Woodfired Pizza, Samosas, Sushi, Falafel, Greek Desserts, Tacos, Gelato
Each food dish is $5. Food tickets can be purchased on the night and then taken to the food stall of your
choice. Cold drinks will also be available for purchase on the night. You can, of course, bring your own picnic
dinner and drinks if you prefer.
The games are going to take place on the school oval, and you may put your picnic blanket down there too. Because
of the free range nature of the event, we really urge parents to become very involved in the games WITH their
kids – both for their safety and the general safety of the event. Teachers will not be on an extended playground
duty timetable, however, they will be involved in some activities on the night.
It is a not to be missed event and is open to the extended family too!
We need lots of helpers for the night!!
