Scala Seminar Series Hosted by the Departments of Landscape Architecture & Architecture Unitec Institute of Technology invites you to bring your lunch and attend a free public seminar on Thursday 21st May, 2015, 12.30-1.30pm Modernity & Tradition: Architectural practice reflecting the cultural ethos by Jaffer AA Khan Architect & founder Jaff Design Studio, India. PhD student RMIT, Melb. Jaff Design Studio was established in 1985 in India. While grounded in modern architecture, the practice finds a balance between the basic principles and strong influence of the cultural ethos of India. A large National Centre for Arts, New Delhi designed in 1986 was an experiment understanding these principles and the essence of culture. The end result is a “Yantra” which represents an ever-expanding universe. This simple mathematical diagram represents cosmic relationship with life. The central focus of Yantra is “Bindu” which encompasses the energies that possess both positive and negative characteristics. The five elements of nature fuse to possess this energy which can manifest in architecture which will reflect this spirit and essence through creation of space. Jaffer AA Khan is an award-winning architect, writer and critic who practices in India, studies in Melbourne and is currently teaching at Unitec, Department of Architecture. His seminar will discuss his work and philosophies. Photo: Proposed Holocaust Museum in Srilanka CPD: NZILA CPD 0.5 points (category 3d). NZRAB CPD 10 pts (register to sign at seminar). In this presentation, which is based on a paper given at the Society of Architectural Historians of Australia and New Zealand (SAHANZ) conference in 2014, Penny will chart the history of the Unitec campus. This history spans from lowland forest to farm to lunatic asylum to educational institute, and beyond, in considering current development proposals. Her central question is, can we still interpret the campus today as a therapeutic environment, albeit different from the one planned for the asylum patients of the 19th century? Penny has carried out a number of research projects on the landscape of the Unitec campus, especially the extensive tree collection that she has championed to be included as a significant city arboretum.
