Dear Parents,
As you may be aware from media reports and a notice sent home early last week, the Victorian
Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) is currently investigating the
Department of Education and Training (DET).
Moonee Ponds West Primary School, along with several other Victorian schools, has been named for
its alleged involvement as a conduit for the misuse of Department funds, a so-called ‘banker school’.
As a parent at the school and as President of the School Council, I have been dismayed and
disappointed by the allegations.
I would like to reassure the school community that as far as we know at this time, the allegations
relate to practices which took place several years ago under a former principal, and concern the
misuse of central Department funds, not funds allocated to our school or raised by our community. I
can assure you our students did not miss out on any opportunities due to our alleged role as a
‘banker school’.
The School Council takes our financial management obligations very seriously, and I have confidence
in our current systems and processes.
To that end, we welcome the IBAC investigation and, as needed, the school is fully cooperating with
the inquiry.
If parents or carers would like any further information on the inquiry you should visit the IBAC
website at www.ibac.vic.gov.au. Daily transcripts and the terms of reference are all publicly
available.
MPWPS is a wonderful, strong school, and remains focussed on supporting students to be their best.
Yours sincerely,
Paul Girdler
School Council President
