Mission Statement
The Morales Memorial Scholarship (MMS) exists to award academic scholarships to Grandview High School Latinos/as and/or graduates
from a farmworking background, attending a Washington public four-year institution with a demonstrated commitment to serving others
through community and/or school activities and/or future profession.
Further, we are committed to mentoring our next and future Morales generations to promote social justice, post-secondary educational
opportunities, and community connections and giving.
Background
The Morales Memorial Scholarship was started in Fall of 2005 by
a few family members and has grown to include both family and
friends.
The MMS was started as a means to honor our parents, Teodoro
and Francisca Morales, and our deceased sister, Micaela Morales
Herrera, three individuals who advocated for the education of their
children even when times were difficult.
As part of recognizing the educational opportunities family members
have experienced, we also commit to mentoring our next generation
of family members to be a generation of giving to community. Our
first scholarship award was awarded Spring 2008.
Leadership & Organization
The Morales Memorial Scholarship is led by a coordination board
presently comprised of three members and has a general
membership comprised of sixteen family and friends.
Two current board members serve as liaisons to the Grandview
Dollars for Scholars Committee.
Fundraising
The May wine tasting & dinner is our primary fundraising event.
We recruit corporate and institutional donors, sell sponsored
organization tables and obtain donations for a silent auction from
businesses, friends and family members. The Executive Board
members commit to making both financial and in-kind contributions.
Honorees
Teodoro and Francisca migrated to Washington State from Texas
after Teodoro served in the US Army and came home to start a life
and decided to leave the family trucking business of hauling local
fruits and vegetables. He found that employment opportunities were
limited in South Texas and made a decision to seek opportunities
for his family in Washington. He, like many other patriarchs of South
Texas families, migrated to and from Washington State for numerous
years until he decided that educational opportunities for his children
would be in Washington State.
We schedule our annual fundraiser the first weekend in May because
May 4, 1941 was our parents’ wedding date signifying the beginning
of our family experience. And, in the 70’s and 80’s our parents would
visit us at the various campuses we were attending to celebrate Cinco
de Mayo and their anniversary.
Micaela Morales Herrera fought a courageous battle with breast
cancer. She earned an MSW from the University of Washington and
instilled the value of education in her own children, Sonya ClarkHerrera and David Herrera.
Grandview School District Roots
Our goal is to help GHS Latino graduates and graduates from
farmworking backgrounds reach their dreams. Ten of the eleven
children of the Teodoro Morales family attended Grandview School
District from 1958 to 1979. Numerous nieces and nephews of our
father’s siblings who joined him in Washington also attended
Grandview School District. Presently, we have numerous grand-nieces
and nephews, cousins, enrolled in Grandview School District.
Scholarship recipients must demonstrate enrollment in a state
university. Scholarship funds are mailed to the institutional
financial aid office.
