All Victorian Government schools are mandated to
provide twice-yearly, written reports to parents,
indicating the learning achievements and progress of
each child.
Our teachers have been preparing reports for all our
students over recent weeks. This is a major task
involving many hours after school and on weekends,
so it’s important that we get the most from the reports
and the aligned three-way conferences.

The ‘written’ report is the formal process used by the
school to advise you of your child’s progress at school.
It’s important to understand that learning is a complex
process. There are many variables that affect learning,
all of which play a part at various times.
Reporting time is an opportunity to recognise the
learning that has taken place and plan for further
growth in all areas. The report you receive will
indicate your child’s progress over the last twelve
months. Student achievements are benchmarked to
the Australian Curriculum, or at least, the Victorian
version of this, called AusVELS. This stands for the
Australian Curriculum and the Victorian Essential
Learning Standards. The report will also give you an
overview of your child’s progress in relation to the
International Baccalaureate (IB), Primary Years
Programme (PYP). The report outlines the IB ‘learner
profile’ which focuses on the attributes we want our
students to develop; the ‘units of inquiry’ investigated
so far this year; trans-disciplinary skill development and

the IB attitudes. We believe these to be important
aspects of your child’s development that will determine
their capacity to be effective and self-managed adults
in the future.
each family, informing parents of the process this year
and asking them to select some conference times that
suit them between 10.30am and 7.30pm on Thursday
18th June.
It is also important to remember that all children are
different and their ‘rates of learning’ will vary.
Tuesday 2nd June — Thursday 11th June:
Teachers try to ‘benchmark’ students against
‘standards’ rather than other students. Teachers make
a ‘professional judgment’ based on various forms of
assessment and observations, as well as discussions
with colleagues.
Conference preference times will be returned by
parents to the teacher of the youngest child. Teachers
will allocate conference times to parents on a ‘first in,
first served’ basis and do their best to coordinate
conference times of families with more than one child
attending school.
The Three-way Conference—Pupil-Free Day:
Friday 12th June:
Thursday 18th June
Teachers send conference preference times home in
the envelope with student reports.
The three-way conference is a three-way interaction
between parent, teacher and student. Students
assume equal partner status in discussions
concerning the progress of their learning. Of course, a
student’s capacity for input increases over time, and
it’s this growing ability to take responsibility for his/her
own learning that will assist in developing
self-managed, effective adults who understand their
own learning and can make decisions that are likely to
result in positive outcomes.
Essentially, the fifteen minute, three-way conference
will enable about half of the time to be devoted to
dialogue between the teacher and parent, whilst the
remainder of the time may involve students taking a
leading role, accepting accountability and
responsibility for their progress and demonstrating a
growing understanding of their development as
independent learners. This may also include students
talking about how they set learning goals or sharing
and discussing work samples that have been selected
for their portfolios.
The three-way conference is also an opportunity to
discuss aspects of your child’s written report.
We believe that, through this process, students will be
encouraged to take increasingly greater responsibility
for their learning and parents will have access to
information about their child’s progress.

BAKE OFF
On Monday 18th May, Chantel and I attended the
Mornington Secondary Bake Off.
I was very excited … and nervous, because when I
had been practicing the recipe at home our oven had
been misbehaving (the door doesn’t close properly
and I wasn’t prepared to stand holding it for 20
minutes) so my practice cupcakes were … well, a bit
flat!
When we arrived at Mornington Secondary, we had to
sign in—that was pretty amazing. They have this huge
passport thing and you have to take a picture of
yourself which prints out and you carry it around with
you while you’re there.
Then we went to the cooking room and were greeted
by hair net holding people who welcomed us. There
were lots of other kids from other primary schools in
the area—about 23 people competing individually.
We were shown to benches where all the ingredients
were set up for us, a bit like Masterchef and also a bit
scary because we had a time limit. So I started putting
the ingredients into the bowl randomly, but then I
calmed down a bit and read the recipe and followed
the method. I was a bit concerned that it didn’t look like
there was enough mixture but when I spooned the
cupcakes out, there was plenty.
When they came out of the oven, they were soooo
much better than the ones we had made at home …
better oven I’m guessing!
After that we had to decorate the cupcakes however
we wanted, which is a fun idea but I had no idea what I
wanted to do. There were so many amazing designs
that people were coming up with, some were really
awesome.
I went up to collect the icing and decorations and I
really like orange so I collected lots of orange things
and created my orange … winning designs. Mine were
picked as winners because of their consistency and
preciseness (or precision rather!). I think Mrs Burns
must watch a lot of Masterchef because she knew how
to keep us in suspense before announcing the winner.
I felt amazing and couldn’t believe it for a moment, but
I’d like to thank Mrs Mattingley for organizing us to
go and also Mornington Secondary College for running the event. I’d also like to congratulate Chantel
on her great purple designs.

DIVISIONAL CROSS COUNTRY – CASEY FIELDS
Congratulations to the 3 amazing students who raced
at the Divisional Cross Country at Casey Fields
yesterday (Wednesday). The conditions were perfect
when Robbie Arnott headed off for his 3km race. He
ran exceptionally well in a tough field and placed a
commendable 16th. Mackenzie continued with a
strong run in the 11 year old race. She had a superb
start and ran a determined race to finish 14th!
Sebastian Leo ran next in the 10 year old race. He
had a great start, ran strongly though the whole 2km
race and placed 31st overall. We are really proud of
you all for approaching the event with such a positive
attitude and giving your race your best. All of you ran
with determination and not one of you looked like you
had anything left in the tank when you crossed the
line! An outstanding effort!
Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who came
along and cheered on all our competitors. It was great
to have you there.

The Victorian Government has recently introduced a
new initiative that is designed to assist parents with
the cost of camps, sports activities and excursions.
The new CSEF is available to parents who hold a
means-tested concession card or are temporary
foster parents. The allowance will be paid to the
school and used towards expenses relating to
camps, excursions and sporting activities for the
benefit of your child(ren).
The annual CSEF amount per primary student will
be $125.
This initiative goes some way to replacing the
Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) that was
withdrawn in 2014.
To access this fund, you can call into the school office to collect a CSEF application form or download a
form from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef .
You should lodge the CSEF application form at
the school office by June 26, 2015.
