5th annual Sunday, April 26th, 2015 3-6 pm Park Plaza, 607 South Park View St, Los Angeles, CA Benefiting St. John’s Well Child & Family Center www.movablefeastla.org 5th annual What is the Movable Feast? Movable Feast is the annual fundraising event benefiting the St. John’s Well Child & Family Center. This gala food event showcases some of LA’s best restaurants while supporting healthcare services and wellness programs for people living in our city’s most under-served communities of South Los Angeles and Compton. Local growers and food conscious chefs will unite to host this unique affair for guests to savor a variety of tastings that feature locally grown, sustainable products procured from our growing partners! St. John’s is an independent, non-profit network of community health centers and school-based clinics serving South Los Angeles and Compton, commonly referred to as a food desert, where the majority of residents live in poverty and are plagued with chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. A delicious way to raise awareness about the lack of healthy food and resources in impoverished communities like South LA and Compton. “When I first came to St. John’s, I hadn’t received treatment for my diabetes in over 10 years,” said Julio Magana, a patient who lost his vision due to diabetes related complications, but has since received corrective surgery to restore his sight. “St. John’s has taught me how to manage my diabetes through diet, exercise, and medication. For me and others, we need to be able to access healthy food and safe places to exercise. We have to change our lives and our neighborhoods for our health.” - Julio M, St. John’s patient 5th annual St. John’s Well Child and Family Center offers high quality comprehensive medical, dental and mental health services to individuals and families in a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental environment. Movable Feast is already a well-run event...There was such a positive energy in the venue amongst guests, with other chefs, the volunteers and the event staff! Jayro Sandoval, Homegirl Cafe I want to thank you for the opportunity of having our students work at the Moveable Feast. I have heard nothing but positive things from the students and Chef Knight. I look forward to continuing this relationship and providing more opportunities for our students to network, get real-life experience and raise their confidence levels so they can eventually land a job in the industry. David Casillas, Lead Instructor, Le Cordon Bleu Los Angeles I just wanted to say that working that event was such a blast and such an awesome opportunity for me. It will provide health care coverage for those individuals that do not qualify for Obamacare. My Health LA (MHLA) is a no-cost health care program for low-income residents of Los Angeles County who do not have health insurance. The program includes primary care services at clinics, such as health screenings, physicals, chronic disease management, and prescription medications. Specialty care and more acute services will be provided by LA County’s Department of Health Services. SHAME OF THE CITY – THE SEQUEL SLUM HOUSING: L.A.’S HIDDEN HEALTH CRISIS Enhancing Community Health by Improving Housing and Health Practices, Aligning Government Priorities and Increasing the Power of Tenants There is a fundamental crisis of health and human rights in Los Angeles, particularly in Downtown and South Los Angeles. Contributing to the crisis are substandard and slum housing conditions that permeate these communities causing direct and serious health consequences for residents who are primarily tenants and children. The negative health outcomes, which result from living in slum housing conditions, represent a substantial public health hazard. 2014: The Year of 50 year anniversaries! Both St. John’s & War on Poverty Turn 50 By Jim Mangia, President & CEO, St. John’s Well Child and Family Centers 2014 is the 50th anniversary for two critical aspects of life in South Los Angeles. It’s the 50th anniversary of America’s “War on Poverty” and the 50th anniversary of St. John’s Well Child and Family Centers. St. John’s, founded by the LA Pediatric Society and St. John’s Episcopal Church in 1964, has become a major community based institution, not only as a critical part of the war on poverty in the United States, but the global struggle for health and human rights. Serving more than 150,000 patient visits a year – more than any other health institution in South Los Angeles – and engaged in a host of service, intervention and prevention programming that goes way beyond the traditional scope of a federally qualified health center, St. John’s embodies the efficient and effective use of private and public resources to attack a seemingly intractable problem (like poor health outcomes, or poverty) head on and with great success. READY FOR OBAMACARE A message from the CEO, Jim Mangia To many of us who have spent a lifetime creating health access for those who have long been denied health care, and most importantly, for those in desperate need of health services, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is an historic opportunity. That’s why St. John’s unrelenting focus in 2013 has been to make Obamacare work for South LA and the tens of thousands of patients we serve and support in living longer, healthier lives. We are thrilled to share with you our successes in ensuring that Obamacare will truly benefit the men, women and children in our communities who we believe have a fundamental human right to health.
