Texture and Paint Selection
Masons have a wide variety of choices for your texture finish, please contact your local dedicated
representative to show you your options.
When making a choice on colours to complete the final look of your home please consider the
following points:
• Exterior plaster can be effected by excessive heat, the primary source of heat is the sun
• Masons recommends that colours with light reflective values (LRV) of less than 25% are never to be
used on Masons Claddings
• If you select a colour that has a LRV less than 25%, you will be required to sign a colour waiver form.
This form identifies the colour as being less than 25% LRV. If issues arise that are determined to
be colour related, such as substrate movement, hairline cracking or other related issues, they are
deemed to be not covered by the Masons Performance Guarantee as these types of defects are
outside the control of the manufacturers recommendations.

What Is Enviro™ AAC Panel System?
Enviro™ AAC Panel System is a solid and lightweight, aerated concrete substrate that is available from
Masons applicators, who provide details for installation. This sheet details the subsequent texturing of
the Enviro™ AAC Panel System.
Advantages
• Lightweight and solid concrete construction
• Attractive monolithic textured finish
• Flattens walls and hides joints
Application
Installation of Enviro™ AAC Panel System
Enviro™ jointing glue must be used for glueing sheets together. Installation should be done by a
Masons licensed applicator or experienced Enviro installer. Should you have any queries or are not
sure on how to install Enviro™ please contact Masons prior to commencement. The Enviro™ AAC
panel system must be installed by a Masons Licensed Applicator.
Preparation
Surface should be clean and dry, excess glue should be removed. Control joints should be installed
and complete to installation instructions. A single coat of Plastaseal should be applied to the whole
wall to assist with controlling suction during plaster application.
Meshing
Apply mesh to entire Enviro™ Panel surface and apply pre-meshed corner beads to all edges and
corners, making sure all mesh is wet into the plaster, 400 x 100 butterfly bandages applied diagonally
to the corners of all windows and doors. Any other areas susceptible to cracking should be treated
with control joints in accordance with substrate insulation details.
Flushing
Skimming render applied to the whole wall in a single coat using Darby, screed and/or steel float to
obtain a smooth level finish of approximately 5 mm thick, place Fibreglass Mesh wet into first coat of
skimming render, proper setting of corner beads will assist in achieving straight lines. A levelling coat
appropriate to the final texture can then be applied thinly to the whole wall area.
Texturing
The desired texture from the Masons range can now be applied. Options are 1 mm, Adobe and precoloured texture.
Painting
Paint in accordance with the Masons specification. A coat of Masons Limestop Sealer is to be used
and then two coats of Masons Premium Highbuild acrylic paint. Plaster requires three days to cure
before application of Masons Premium Build Paint. Walls should be dry when painting.
Accessories
Fibreglass Mesh in rolls or pre-meshed can be used to form straight corners by pushing them into
wet plaster with a straight edge. Vents are used to provide ventilation into the cavity, do not block
ventilation slots to the cavity with plaster.
Special Notes
This system will provide waterproofing to the wall surfaces when properly painted, however it is the
responsibility of the designer and builder to provide and install adequate detailing for penetrations
and tops. Refer to the Masons website for further details at www.mpb.co.nz.

Panel System
What Is XRV™ Insulated Panel?
XRV™ Insulated Panel has a crack resistant exterior plaster cladding system that provides a fully
drained and ventilated weatherproof barrier for residential and commercial construction. Developed
specifically to meet the harsh requirements of New Zealand’s coastal environment, the cavity behind
XRV™ Insulated Panel provides an additional safeguard to ensure any moisture that may penetrate
the exterior envelope is able to escape unimpeded. To ensure there is a well-defined chain of
accountability, the installation of the XRV™ Insulated Panel system, including the construction of the
20 mm cavity, can only be undertaken by licensed Masons installer.
Advantages
The XRV™ Insulated Panel System is extremely lightweight (approximately 7 kg per m2) it is well
suited to pole structures or areas with poor quality soils and foundations. This characteristic can
also reduce the cost of supporting structural elements such as beams and columns. It also does not
require a base footing of concrete in order to support its own weight, which can save money on
foundation work.
Application
Meshing Render
Use pre-meshed corner beads on all external corners. Use meshing render or adhesive to fix premeshed corner beads. Apply meshing render plaster coat 3 mm minimum. Embed Fibreglass Mesh
into the wet plaster. Overlap each successive length by 50 mm minimum. To opening reveals mesh

Brick & Block
Masonry
What Is Masons PlastaBrick™ Masonry System?
A masonry render system for smoothing and texturing brick or block. The system provides a hard
durable surface which when painted is waterproof and easier to maintain than a standard painted
wall.
Advantages
•
•
•
•
Easy to keep clean and weatherproof when painted.
A wide range of finishes can be achieved.
Ideal for modernizing existing older brick or concrete block houses.
Masons basecoat or lightweight basecoat can be built up to 40 mm to straighten walls.
Application
Preparation
All substrates should be clean dry and free from dust, moss or mold. Previously painted substrates
can be coated provided the paint is in good condition and well adhered (at applicators discretion
and risk). The painted surface should be cleaned then treated with a coat of Masons Meshing Render
to provide adhesion and a gritty surface suitable for plastering.
Flushing
Use basecoat and lightweight basecoat, alternatively skimming render can be applied tightly in a thin
application to ensure plaster is forced into the surface and then brought out to a flat finish with extra
product. The following day when this has cured a tight coat of skimming render is applied to give a
flanking coat and a flat smooth finish.
Texturing
The desired texture from the Masons range can now be applied. Options are 1 mm and Adobe
or selected pre-coloured texture which are painted over with a coat of Limestop and 2 coats of
Premium Build.
Painting
Paint in accordance with the chosen texture specification. Premium Build Paint is recommended.
New block walls can hold large volumes of water so it is recommended that the wall be protected
from rain until painted.
Meshing
150 gsm coated Fibreglass Mesh can be used in the Basecoat plaster and this provides flatter walls
with less chance of cracking or block lines showing. It is however not a total guarantee against
cracking as a block wall that step cracks can not be 100% prevented by standard 150 gsm Fibreglass
Mesh.
Accessories
Pre-meshed corner beads can be used to form straight corners. Brick Vents are used to provide
ventilation into the brick cavity. Bands and mouldings are available.
Special Notes
This system will provide weatherproofing to the wall when properly painted however it is the
designers responsibility to provide adequate detailing for penetrations, tops and sealant details for
retaining and backfilled walls.

What is PlastaBacka™?
PlastaBacka™ is a fibre cement sheet coating system specifically designed for Hardibacker cladding. It
provides thick flat plastered walls with an attractive durable textured finish.
Advantages
• Straight clean lines are formed which give a monolithic appearance.
• Easy to keep clean and weatherproof using Masons Premium Build Highbuild Acrylic Paint
• A wide range of textures can be achieved
Application
Substrate
Hardibacker must be installed in conformance with James Hardie New Zealand Limited current
specifications. Sheets must be clean and dry.
Preparation
All substrates must be clean dry and free from dust laitance moss or mold. Masons recommends use
of Flashman flashing systems wherever applicable. A coat of Plastaseal Resin must be rolled on over
all sheet surfaces to reduce suction when plastering.
First Coat
Poly battens 10 mm thick are adhered to the Hardibacker surface vertically at approximately 1.2 m
spacings. Masons Lightweight Plaster is then applied between battens, applying sufficient to fill out
level.
Screed the plaster using the battens as a guide, re-filling where hollows are evident and rescreeding
until full. Prior to second coat, pull out poly battens and fill with lightweight basecoat and allow first
coat of plaster to set for 24 hours before applying next coat.
Second Coat
The Mesh coat is applied to the entire wall. The wall is covered with an approximately 2-3 mm thick
layer of Skimming Render and the 150 gsm Fibreglass Mesh embedded into it. Mesh should be
overlapped 100 mm wherever it needs joining. Allow to set overnight before applying next coat.
Third Coat (optional)
Apply a coat of Skimming Render at a thickness of approximately 2-3 mm and work with screed and
float to form a flat surface capable of supporting a finish coat. Allow to set overnight before applying
next coat.
Texturing
The desired texture from the Masons range can now be applied.
Painting
Paint in accordance with the chosen texture specification. Premium Build Highbuild acrylic is
recommended.
Accessories
PVC pre-meshed corner beads, should be used to form straight corners by pushing them into the wet

Advantages
PlastaBlock™ is a polystryene block system that will provide an R-Value of 1.0 whereas 20 mm of
insulating plaster will provide only 0.2 R-Value, yet the cost of both are very similar.
From 31st October 2007, tougher thermal performance standards apply to all new houses and
buildings. The most difficult houses in insulate masonry homes which maximizes the benefits of
the thermal mass. The insulation properties of the 40 mm EPS sheet will produce an R-Value of 1.0,
which will exceed the building code changes.
Application
Fixing
Using a 5 mm notched tiling trowel apply meshing render and Plastatek™ resin compound to the
40 mm Polystyrene sheet. Firmly place on wall and fix with Dutch darts 5 darts per sheet to hold
sheet in place firmly until adhesive has cured. Then use pre-meshed corner beads on all external
corners. Adhere with Masons Meshing Render or Masons Adhesive.
PlastaClad™ Meshing Render
Apply meshing render plaster coat 3 mm minimum. Embed Fibreglass Mesh into the wet plaster.

System
What is PlastaSlab™?
A masonry render system for smoothing and texturing off form concrete. The system provides a hard
durable surface which when painted is waterproof and easier to maintain than a standard painted
wall.
Advantages
• Easy to keep clean and weatherproof when painted
• A wide range of finishes can be achieved
Application
Substrate
Concrete should be fully cured and dry.
Preparation
Surface should be clean and dry. Dags and proud areas should be ground down.
A single coat of Masons Plastaseal Sealer should then be applied to the whole wall to assist with
controlling suction during plaster application.
Filling
Hollow and voids must be filled with PlastaTek™ Meshing Plaster. These filled areas can be sanded
the next day but it is preferable to fill level as the plaster will be hard and difficult to sand.
Flushing
Basecoat, lightweight basecoat or skimming render can be applied tightly in a thin application to
ensure plaster is forced into the surface and then brought out to a flat finish with extra product.
Texturing
The desired texture from the Masons range can now be applied. Options are 1 mm, and Adobe which
are painted over with a coat of Masons Limestop Sealer and two coats of Masons Premium Build
Highbuild Acrylic Paint.
Painting
Paint in accordance with the chosen texture specification. Masons Premium Build Highbuild Acrylic
Paint is recommended. Walls should be dry when painted and the plaster requires 2-3 days curing
before application of the paint.
Accessories
PVC corner beads can be used to form straight corners.
Special Notes
This system will provide weatherproofing to the wall when properly painted however it is the
designers responsibility to provide adequate detailing for penetrations, tops and sealant details.

Block System
What is PlastaTherm™?
PlastaTherm™ is an insulating plaster system for masonry construction. The insulation properties of
PlastaTherm™ ensure that a 20 mm thickness on the exterior of standard concrete block walls would
give an R-value of 0.20. If a higher R-Value is required, see Masons polystyrene block system which
will give you an R-Value of 1.0.
Advantages
• 20 mm base coat will give you an R-value of 0.20
• Internal masonry walls can be plastered
Application
Application
Plastatherm™ must be applied in 2 coats. The first coat should be 12–15 mm thick. The second coat
must be applied no sooner than the next day giving a total thickness of 20 mm.
Curing
Plastatherm™ must only be applied when the temperature is between 5 and 35 degrees and must be
protected from rain for the first 25 hours.
Finishing
PlastaTherm™ is not a finishing plaster and needs to be overcoated with one of Masons’s finishing
plasters. Ensure that the Plastatherm™ plaster is completely dry and remove any loose plaster by
brushing the surface prior to plastering.
Painting
When the plastering is complete the surface should be coated with a coat of Masons Limestop
Sealer and 2 coats of Masons Premium Build Highbuild Acrylic Paint.
