Dear Millard South Community,
We are winding down the 2014-2015 school year. As we are in the final home stretch, I can say
it has been a successful year for our students and staff. Each day I am amazed by the talents
our students hold. I want to thank the entire Millard South Community. Our school would not
be as successful as it is, if it weren’t for all of your support. Here are some highlights and
reminders to end the year:
 Thank you to the juniors who have been testing for the last month. We can say we are
officially finished with the assessment season. Our juniors took three NeSA assessments
and the ACT within the last month. We hope to obtain great results, which will help drive
our instructional focus and support.
 Next year PRIDE Time (homeroom) will take on a new look. The past few years we have
been discussing some needed changes and this year we took the plunge. For the 20152016 school-year, PRIDE Time will be two days a week at about 20-25 minutes each
time. We are hoping that this increases the engagement and effectiveness of PRIDE Time.
 April 22, we hosted an Air Force ROTC team for a visit. We are hoping to be able to offer
an AFROTC program in Millard in the next few years.
 We are excited to announce that all Early College students will be piloting one-to-one
technology next year. Our hopes are that all students will be one-to-one in the near
future. Give to the Technology Drive as this will help off-set the technology budget and
hopefully allow us to move toward more technology devices at Millard South.
 Over the weekend, I was able to get out and attend the school play. It was very funny and
again, I am amazed at the talent of all of our students. There are still many activities to
attend this Spring. Get out and witness, firsthand, the talent of Millard South students.
 Our music department is setting the bar high. This year all three groups (band, choir and
orchestra) earned 1+ at the District Music Contest. We are proud of you!
 Graduation is just around the corner. The class of 2015 is a special class. They have
accomplished many things, but I know this is just the tip of the iceberg. Here are some
dates to remember:
 Caps and Gowns will be available on May 7 and 8 only if all fines are paid, senior surveys
taken, and a successful completion of the PLP.




The senior banquet is scheduled for May 11th, 6:00 pm @ Arbor Hall.
Honors Night will be held on May 14th, 7:00 pm in the auditorium.
Senior Finals May 20 and 21
Graduation walking practice is on May 22, 11:00 am at UNO Sapp
Fieldhouse.
 Graduation is May 24, 7:00 pm at CenturyLink. All graduates need to
arrive at 6:00 pm.
As the semester ends, we encourage you to increase your level of involvement and
communication with teachers and your children to ensure that our students finish the year
strong. Great things are happening at Millard South.

On Tuesday, April 28th after ACT testing,
students enjoyed a day of community; a
day of Patriotism. Students participated
in several wellness activities ranging from
badminton, an obstacle, and a silly
relay.
"It was fun." said English
Department Chair, Suzie Antoniak, after
her students came in from a race on the
field.
Some also made blankets to donate to NE
Cancer Center, wrote thank you notes to
servicemen, picked up around campus,
and
created
posters
for
athletes
competing in the upcoming Special
Olympics state games. Music Director,
Rex Barker mentioned, "Our Pride Time
enjoyed their day." These were just a few
of the activities offered.
In addition, students chose among three
speakers to attend, all sending a message
about individual empowerment. One of
the presenters was Millard South's very
own Ms. Suhr. "The session was deep,"
said freshmen Riley Watters. "It really
made you think."

11th annual Ten Outstanding Young Omaha Teens award (TOYO Teens).
The 2015 TOYO Teen recipients are:

The TOYO Teens award is based on the prestigious Ten Outstanding Young Omahans (TOYO) awards that
began over 80 years ago in Omaha. TOYO honors ten individuals ages 21 to 40, who strive for excellence
in both the professional and personal arenas and have a strong commitment to service in the community.
TOYO Teens was created in 2005 because the Omaha Jaycees wanted to expand the effort to recognize
teens who contribute to their community through volunteerism. Applicants must be individuals between
the ages of 13 and 19 that are making a difference in the Omaha community through volunteerism and
community action.
An awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2015, at 3:00 p.m.at Village Pointe Shopping Center
Amphitheatre, located near 168 & Dodge.

World Language Week
All World Language students participated in World Language Week at Millard South.
During the first part of the week, the students listened to speakers addressing the
importance of learning other languages and learning about other cultures. Those speakers
included Alex Plambeck, Armando Salgado, Mallorie Wright, Dayna Derichs, Ross Pesek,
Travis & Dorine Nordstrom, and Anne Marie Kenny. During World Language Week our
students also attended a variety of culture and language sessions. The students experienced
different music, food, dances, crafts, games, cultural information, and trivia from around
the world.
Students were also given the opportunity to enter an essay contest, a poster contest, and a
video contest. Thank you to the following businesses that donated prizes for our contest
winners: Chili’s, Don & Millie’s, Godfather’s, The Olive Garden, The V, and Valentino’s.

US Air Force Heartland of America Bands
The US Air Force Heartland of America Bands was at Millard South on Tuesday, April 14th.
They did a clinic with the band students from 8:00 - 8:45 AM and then presented a concert
8:45 - 9:30 in the auditorium.
The United States Air Force Heartland of America Band Vortex offers a new and refreshing
product sure to excite fans of all styles of music. During concerts, listeners heard rock,
funk, jazz, blues, soul, swing, country, and the latest pop hits performed with a fascinating
twist on the typical rock band instrumentation.
This group defies convention by drawing on each member’s musical expertise to deliver
unique musical arrangements. Vocals, drums, and guitar entice audiences to move their
feet while a thumping tuba lays down a fat groove complemented with lively doses of
harmony from a hot brass section. Members of Vortex serve as Air Force musical
ambassadors throughout the state of Nebraska supporting civic and educational outreach,
recruiting, and special military engagements.
This unique and versatile ensemble exemplifies the pride and professionalism found every
day throughout the entire United States Air Force. Whether inspiring audiences to greater
patriotism or adding prestige to military events, Vortex is sure to impress.

Girls Track Update
Ralston Relay Recap
The Girls Track and Field Team came in third overall with a score of 77. Lincoln
North Star had 78 and Fremont scored 99 to take home the championship. We won
4 Relay events: 4x100, 4x100 Throwers Relay, Distance Medley Relay, and the Shot
Put Relay. The Patriots set two meet record. One in the discus throw by Eleni
Knapp who launched it 139'09" besting the previous mark by over seven feet that
was set in 1989. The girls also set the DMR Meet Record by running 12:42:22 besting
the old mark set in 2004 by over eight seconds. That relay consisted of Taylor
Somers, Paxton Throne, Nikki Messick, and Katie Spencer. We had to make a last
second change to the relay, literally, as Paxton set down her half eaten sub sandwich
and did not even have time to put on spikes before running the 400 leg on the
relay. It was greatly appreciated by the coaches and team. The 28th Annual Millard
South Track and Field Invitational was held on April 11. Field Events started
at 10am with running starting at 1130. Thank you to all for your support of these
young ladies on the track.

Millard South Track and Field Invite
The Girls Track and Field team started off prom weekend in a great way. Our field
events came away with 8 personal records, 8 All-Time top 25 marks, and 7 medalists
with 2 first place finishes in the Shot and Discus. Kat Pflug threw a personal record
of 41'04" in winning the Shot and putting her in the top five in state. Eleni Knapp
won the discus and has gone undefeated this year. In running events we had 4
personal records, 4 All-Time top 25 marks, and 7 medalists. Taelar Solano placed
2nd in the 100 dash with a personal record of 12.70. Esther Broyles placed 3rd in
the 400 and 2nd in the 200. Both of her marks places her in the top 8 in
state. Taylor Somers placed 2nd in both the 800 and 1600. Her times place her in
the top 8 in state as well. Our 4x100 relay of Solano, Burton, Petersen, and Klein
finished in 2nd place. The highlight of the running events was Katie Spencer in the
3200 where she lapped everyone in the field at least once. She ran a personal record
of 10:38.10, which is 5th All-Time in state history. All those who placed in a running
event ran marks that place them all in the top 8 in state.
Our girls continue to work hard and believe in each other. Our goal to be at our best
at the end of the season has been our mission all year so that we can compete for a
state title. There will be some tough teams to compete with, but they will also have
to compete against us.

Girls Track Update
Lincoln High Girls Track and Field Recap
The girls team finished in fourth place against some top competition. It was a great
meet with some huge personal records, 16 medalists, 5 personal records, 5 top 25 all
-time performances, and 2 event winners.
Just a few of the highlights include PJ Petersen vaulting 9'8" in the pole vault which
earned her a gold medal and places her 5th in state currently. Taylor Somers
running 5:06.58 in the 1600 placing second and moving her into second all-time at
Millard South. Teammate Katie Spencer came in third in the 1600, but won the 800
just an hour before. We placed three in the top 7 in the 100m dash with Logan Klein
placing 7th with a season PR of 13.00, Taelar Solano placing 4th in 12.80, and Paige
McClannan placing second in 12.69. This was a personal record and placed her 10th
All-Time at Millard South.
Our next meet is on Monday at Bellevue West, the T-Bird Invite. The following week
is Metros then Districts on May 13 right here at Millard South, and then State
on May 22 and 23.

for the NCSA Nebraska State Assistant Principal

Hill will receive the Award of Excellence in Secondary Education. All honorees will receive

Tradition of Sportsmanship
We have a strong tradition at Millard South of supporting our teams and activities in a positive
fashion. Our goal is to support and cheer for our team and not be negative towards the
opposing team or the officials. Take pride in keeping all cheers, signs, and other behavior
appropriate before, during, and after all contests. Our expectations are higher than other
schools only because we have the best student body and fan base in the state. We all have a
responsibility to model good sportsmanship. Enjoy the contests and best of luck to all of our
teams.
A $60.00 participation fee is

The Teammates Mentoring Program of Millard is
looking for a few good mentors. If you have the
desire to a make difference in the life of a child
and can give one hour a week, we need your help.
This school based mentoring program started by

How Can SCIP Help Student and Families?
The School Community Intervention and Prevention (SCIP) program at Millard
South helps to identify students who might be having problems in school as a
result of drugs/alcohol issues and then refers to appropriate resources in the
community. If you have concerns about your own child, your child’s friend, or
some other young person at Millard South, please contact the SCIP team leader,

On May 5th the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Bella Voce, Voce de Forza, and
Cantori will perform and on May 7th we will feature the Wind Ensemble, Varsity
Orchestra and Singers. We hope you will attend many of these outstanding
performances that show off the talents of a very creative and intelligent part of the
student body at Millard South.
You should have received an invitation to the Music Banquet by e-mail. We will
celebrate the year on Friday, May 15th beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Millard South
Cafeteria. Reservations are due to Darlene Lynam by May8th. If you did not receive
an invitation one is available on the MSHS Band website.
Millard South will be hosting Drums Across Nebraska on Monday, July 13th at
Heedum Field in Fremont with Midland University since Buell Stadium will be
installing a new surface this summer. Putting together this event is a major
undertaking and we need your help! We are still in need of one or two people to
Chair the Concessions and Site portions of this project. These wonderful chair
people will need everyone's help in a variety of arenas. We will need to find
sponsors and program advertisers, ticket sellers, concessions workers, ushers,
parking attendants, folks to work with the judges and many more positions I'm sure
I haven't listed.

The 2015-16 Color Guard workshop and auditions took place on Monday, April 27 th and results
will be announced soon.
Band families can check the band website for weekly updates and news of upcoming activities
and rehearsal schedules. We encourage the students to visit this site as well so they can be
prepared for the rehearsals. There are a number of links to other great websites and
mini-lessons that the students will find helpful. We are submitting all playing tests through
the SmartMusic program now. The immediate feedback is a benefit to those who have it at

Band Camp has been scheduled for July 27-31 with students new to the program also
coming in on July 23 & 24. We are also rehearsing once a week on Monday evenings
beginning June 8th to help students be ready for the upcoming year. See you then!
We are pleased to announce that Ross Whiston has been hired as the Assistant Band
Director for Millard South for next year. Some of you may remember when Mr.
Whiston student taught at Millard South in the fall of 2011. He has been an adjunct
instructor with the marching band the last few years and has been teaching music at
Aldrich Elementary in Millard since 2013. We are excited to welcome him to the
team.
The teaching staff for 2015-16 will include a number of Millard South alumni. Seth
McKenzie will be the Percussion Caption Head. Seth is a graduate of Millard South,
UNO and received his Masters at the University of Massachusetts. He will be
assisted by Joe Paustian, a Millard South and UNO graduate as well as Janet
Willman another Millard South graduate. The Color Guard will be led by Elizabeth
Lynam, a Millard South graduate who just finished her degree in Education at the
University of South Dakota. She will be joined by Brittany Jeary, a recent UNL
graduate. Both of these ladies were a part of their University Color Guards and
worked with the Millard South Winter Guard in 2015.

Full Orchestra is rehearsing every Tuesday morning beginning at 7:00am for the Graduation
performance. The Full Orchestra will perform various selections at the MSHS Graduation
prelude and ceremony on Sunday, May 24. Students will be asked to arrive at Millard South
at 5:00pm on that day to load the buses.
Freshman Orchestra will participate in the Young Orchestra Festival held in Lincoln the
morning of Saturday, May 9.
Symphony String Orchestra performs a concert Thursday, May 7 beginning at 7:30pm in the
MSHS auditorium. The Symphony Orchestra will also be 'giving back' by performing
outreach presentations during first block (B1) at various elementary schools during the
month of May.

Auditions for next year’s show choirs will be held May 14th. Workshops will be
Monday, May 11th and Tuesday, May 12. We hope to have a lot of fabulous performers
audition and the lists of new members of next year’s “Stage One” women’s show choir
and “South on Stage” mixed show choir will be posted on the choir website.
Congratulations to all of our new and returning show choir members!
Jazz Choir and Show Choir will be hosting The Last Hurrah! Monday May 18 th. It will
feature The Experience, South on Stage and Stage One as well as some small groups
and solos. Admission will be $5 at the door and will help fund the choirs for next
year.
We are very excited to announce that we have hired Amy Wesely to join the Vocal
Music staff at Millard South High School. Mrs. Wesely comes to us from Beadle
Middle School where rocked the socks off of the choral department. Amy is a high
energy, very positive teacher and will be a huge asset to us here at Millard South. She
will co-teach the choirs and direct the show choirs next year.

education to our students.

music programs should remain an integral part of the curriculum, and be prepared
to spend an hour listening to the reasons why. But first, go to

Education (NAfME) has decided to fully reinvent its advocacy efforts to show “where
the rubber really meets the road” when it comes to music education.
Effective February 18, NAfME is officially launching a new advocacy brand and
website called “Broader Minded,” which takes an innovative look at the true value of
music education and challenges assumptions about music’s often-perceived
supplemental role in the curriculum. Broader Minded is essentially the association’s
platform for articulating new arguments that stress the importance of music in every
child’s education. “Today we officially announce that the National Association for
Music Education has fundamentally reinvented the manner in which we teach,
promote, and conduct music education advocacy,” said NAfME Executive Director
and CEO Michael Butera. “We are on a nationwide mission to ensure parents,
students, and music educators that it is safe to advocate for their programs—that
music education programs orchestrate success based on the inherent benefits of
classroom music. We will roll out the Broader Minded campaign over the next few
weeks and continue the march in the months and years ahead. “Most importantly,
through this incredibly uplifting and long overdue initiative, we’re going to remind
the nation, music educators, and advocates of why, exactly, music is in our schools,
and why music educators got into teaching music in the first place. We look forward
to others joining in the Broader Minded campaign where together the brain and
heart demonstrate the argument for music education.”

To date, much of NAfME’s advocacy has relied on data-driven arguments that
correlate music study with quantifiable measures of academic success such as
graduation rates, test scores, and grades. These data, while valid, also are
limited in scope. As with any complex outcome, the effect of music education as
a singular intervention on a student’s overall success is difficult to isolate.
Further, through continued interactions with members, stakeholders, and
students, NAfME has recognized the need to reach beyond these traditional
arguments as part of its advocacy work. As a result of these interactions, NAfME
was able to articulate several new key arguments that speak to music
education’s unique contribution to a high-quality education. Broader Minded
cites benefits such as skills and personal attributes like self-discipline, reflective
learning, and emotional awareness—skills that allow individuals to maximize
both their personal success and their contributions to the 21st century
workforce.
The new website at www.BroaderMinded.com features an interactive model
that illustrates these benefits with actual stories submitted by students, parents,
and teachers. The site also allows users to join the Broader Minded movement,
access new advocacy materials, and share their own stories about the value of
music education.

Southeast Community College in Milford? Ninth and tenth
grade parents, in particular, need to be aware that some
programs at Milford can be full approximately two years
