Welcome to Millard South High School
Dear Millard South Community,
Finally, Mother Nature is showing us signs of spring. I am ready for some nice weather and
looking forward to spending time outdoors. We are in full swing with spring sports and
events related to the conclusion of the school year. This is the last leg of the school year
and all students and staff must finish strong. So many wonderful things have occurred at
Millard South in the past month. Take time to appreciate our students and their
accomplishments by looking through the newsletter.
 Prom and Post-Prom are scheduled for April 11. Prom is in the ballroom at the
CenturyLink, 8:00-11:00 pm with Post-Prom following at Millard South. Thank you to
the Junior Class Board for organizing prom and our parents who organize Post-Prom.
We appreciate all of your efforts to make this event special for our students. Stop by
the Post-Prom open house on April 11. You won’t recognize the building.
 Our DECA Program makes history again. Our students did an amazing job at State
DECA in March.
 Our band just returned from Winter Park for a competition and some ski fun. The
band members had time for skiing, but came away with excellent results.
 The Millard South High School Student Council made history once again. For the 8 th
year in a row they have received the highest honor a student council can earn.
 On April 21st, we will host an official visit from the Air Force Junior ROTC team. Many
schools are on the waiting list to become an Air Force Junior ROTC school, but we
hope in the near future, Millard South is selected as a site. We feel this program
could provide some excellent opportunities for our students.
 Next year, we will be partnering with College Possible. This is an exciting program to
assist students with being a high school student to becoming a four-year college

 Graduation is just around the corner. We will be conducting a senior meeting on April
15th for all graduating seniors. Graduation is scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 7:00 pm
at The CenturyLink Center.
 April 28th is a BIG day for our juniors. They will be taking the ACT. Please encourage
your son or daughter to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. Also,
have your student login to his/her Naviance account and take the practice ACT
assessment. We have tried to incorporate ACT practice into all of our classes. On
April 28th, only juniors will report in the morning, but school will resume in the
afternoon for ALL students.
 Spring sports are in full swing. Get out, watch some sports, and witness our athletes
in action.
Millard South is full of wonderful opportunities for all students. Each day, I walk through the
doors, I am amazed with our students and staff. We all have to work together to provide a
caring community for our students. Thank you for all that you do for Millard South, but
more importantly, for sending us your teenagers each day.

The Millard South Varsity Cheerleaders are the 2015 Class A Non-Tumbling State Cheer
Champions, this is their 4th straight title. They competed against 13 other schools in
their division at the Heartland Event Center in Grand Island, Nebraska on Saturday,
February 21.
The squad includes:

Krystal Camron, Aubrey Nicholas, Allison Elsasser, Nicole Jarzobski, Kayla Rodriguez, Anna Vickers

Please congratulate Hanneman McGraw (9), for receiving a
Merit award in Graphic Design at the Audubon Society of Omaha
Student Art Show 2015.
An exhibit of student work will take place on Saturday, April
11 at Bellevue University, Gordon Lozier Center, 1000 Galvin
Road South, Bellevue, NE.
All artwork in the exhibit features drawings of birds of the
Midwest or endangered birds of the world.
The artwork of all students entering the contest will be on
display from 12:00 noon until 3:30 pm that day, with a 2:00 pm
awards ceremony and live raptor viewing from 1:00-1:45pm.

For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and
community, Millard South High School Student Council has been awarded a 2015 National Gold Council
of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils. This is the 8th consecutive year
that MS StuCo has been awarded this honor; the only school in Nebraska that has achieved this goal.
To meet the requirements for the NASC National Council of Excellence Award, a student council must
meet a variety of criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular
meetings, a democratic election process, and membership in NASC, councils demonstrate things such as
leadership training for council members, teacher/staff spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning,
and active participation in state and national student council associations. Those councils awarded the
gold level have successfully demonstrated the highest levels of leadership.

Teams from Millard North and Bellevue East
Capture Nebraska Economics
Challenge State Championships
High school teams from Bellevue and Omaha outpaced other competitors in the annual Nebraska Economics
Challenge State Championship hosted by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education on Friday, March 27 at the
University of Nebraska–Lincoln. NCEE is located at the UNL College of Business Administration.
The challenge pitted 19 teams from ten high schools from across the state in a competition to determine who has
the greater knowledge of economics.
“It was very encouraging to see such statewide diversity and participation. This year’s competition was a testament
of the teachers in our communities across Nebraska working hard to ensure students are given the economic skills
they need to lead informed, productive lives,” said Jennifer Davidson, president of the Nebraska Council on
Economic Education and assistant professor of practice in economics.
The winning team in the Adam Smith Division for advanced placement, international baccalaureate and honors
students is from Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska. Team members included Neil Band, Sukarn
Chokkara, Priya Kukreja and Raymond Thai. The team coach is Jeff Gustafson.
The runner-up team is from Millard South High School and coached by Seth Woodke. Team members are Noah
Albrecht, Jordan Newsom, Tatum Stenger and Zach Warneke.
The winning team in the David Ricardo Division for single semester economics students is from Bellevue East High
School. Team members were Zachary Correll, Andrew Godwin, Greyson Kreis and Colton Patrick. The team was
coached by PK Simmons.
The runner-up team is from Waverly High School and coached by Trent Goldsmith. Team members are Philip
Faughn, Seth Howe, Austin Loveless and Tony Trausch.
Both state championship teams will go on to complete in the national semi-finals on April 14. The top four teams
from that round will then advance to compete nationally in New York City in May.
The Nebraska Council on Economic Education and its five centers are focused on directly educating Nebraska’s
students and providing professional development for K-12 teachers to advance economic literacy. Its mission is to
act as a catalyst and lead a statewide initiative to advance economic literacy.
The College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln educates nearly 3,900 future
business leaders to Start Something with its 10 undergraduate majors and five master’s programs. Established in
1913, it is the only doctorate-granting business college in Nebraska.

Congratulations to the following winners of the pageant: 2015 Mr.

On March 21st in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful
demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa. The protestors were speaking out
against the apartheid "pass laws." The General Assembly has since observed this
date
as
the
International
Day
for
the
Elimination
of
Racial
Discrimination. Millard South honored this day by staff and students wearing
blue, which symbolizes the peace and harmony that can exist when human rights
are observed and protected.

The band had a successful trip to the Winter
Park Ski-Music Festival. They don't have to ski
and play at the same time, but I do know a band
that does...
Millard South had 5 different ensembles
perform (more than any other school there).
Each of our ensembles performed, as stated in
the judges comments, a challenging program.
All 5 ensembles received a "1" rating AND all 5
ensembles WON their division.
Darren Myers and I (and 16 brave parent
chaperones) had 120 high school students
together for 4 days. I can safely tell you they
were great representatives for our school. There
were many great teaching moments about living
in the real world, where everyone away from
the school doesn't have to be patient and gentle
and kind. I enjoy that part of teaching our kids
to be great people.
Only 4 of the students had any skiing experience
prior to this weekend, so 116 of the kids (and
some of our chaperones) were in Ski School and
most discovered another exhilarating activity
that can participate in their entire life. They also
had time for lots of other activities at the rec
center at our lodge and shopping at the awards
ceremony/dance.
Only a couple of minor twisted knees or bruises
so I feel very fortunate they all followed
instructions.
They are growing up with us to be great people.

The Speech & Debate seasons ended this weekend with the Nebraska
State Tournament. The speech tournament was held Thursday at the
University of Nebraska-Kearney & the debate tournament was
held Friday & Saturday at Lincoln Southwest High School. The Millard
South Policy team of Nadeline Sprague & Kobe Cooper made it to
Quarterfinals and a 5th place finish overall for the tournament. This is
the fifth straight year a Millard South policy team has made it to the
elimination rounds at state-dating back to 2011. Nadeline also placed
10th overall in speaker points. Kobe has been selected to attend the
national speech and debate tournament this summer in Dallas, Texas in
a new event called "World Team Debate.” If selected, he and four other
students from other schools in our speech & debate district would
participate in a form of debate that is similar to University level
Parliamentary Debate. Nationals will be held in June. At state speech,
Tiana Rasmussen made it to finals and finished in 3rd place performing
in Oral Interpretation of Poetry.

The Girls Track and Field Team were back in action on Saturday at Burke Relays
and they wasted little time in showing they are a team to be reckoned with. In the
first running event of the day, which was the Distance Medley, Taylor Somers, Jess
Schufeldt, Katie Spencer, and Emily Bedford won by 21 seconds and just missed the
meet record by only five seconds.
Millard South holds the meet record from
2000. On the day we won 3 of the 4 running relays we were in and 1 of the 2 field
relays. We set 4 personal records and 5 Top 25 All-Time Performances. Kat Pflug
placed second in Shot Put and with her throw of 36'6.5" put her into 14th
All-Time.
Madi Stearnes placed second to her teammate Eleni Knapp, but her
throw launched herself up to 16th All-Time in the Discus. Riana
Noelle in the
Triple Jumped leaped to 24th All-Time along with Taelar Solano in the Long Jump
leaping to 25th All-Time. Taelar also lead off the winning Sprint Medley with her
teammates of Logan Klein, Taylor Somers, and Katie Spencer. Taelar and Logan
along with PJ Petersen and Camille Fowler would win the 4x100 in a blazing fast
time of 50.48, which is 13th All-TIme at Millard South.

Wow!! What a Track Meet! Ten of twelve girls placed in Field Events at the Millard North Relays. Led by
Eleni Knapp with a first place finish in the Discus our girls made their marks not only in this meet, but in the
State with some amazing performances. Kat Pflug placed third in the Shot Put just ahead of Eleni, and moved
up to 9th All-Time at Millard South with a throw of 38'02.5". Other Field Event medalists were two second
place finishers in Taelar Solano in Long Jump and PJ Petersen in Pole Vault. Sierra Rasmussen and Allison
Devries tied for 4th in the High Jump and teammate MacKenzie Burk placed sixth in the same event. Madi
Stearnes placed 4th in Discus and Esther Broyles placed 5th in Pole Vault.
On the track, we placed 3rd or better in four of the five running events with an unfortunate DQ in the 4x100 as
we dropped the baton. No need to worry though we still hold the fastest time in state in this event from Burke
Relays. The Distance Medley won for the second straight week just missing the meet record by under two
seconds. Record was set last year by Millard South. Taylor Somers, Esther Broyles, Katie Spencer, and Emily
Bedford lowered their time from last week by 4 seconds. The Sprint Medley placed second. The 4x200 and
4x400 both placed third. Third is also the place the team finished overall amassing 89 points. This is
astonishing since we did not compete in 6 events.
Our next meet is the Bellevue East (Chieftain) Invite and we go to Ralston for the last Relay meet of the
year. Thanks for all the support!!!
The girls track and field team won the Bellevue East Invite. Every single competitor mattered in the victory,
which was by a half a point. Katie Spencer ran the 1600 in 4:58.74. A school record, number 7 all time in
Nebraska history, and 32nd in the nation currently.
Six personal records and four top 25 All-Time performances in the field events got our team off to a great
start. Eleni Knapp won the discus for the third meet in a row and Riley Kister threw a year PR. Taelar
Solano jumped to 13th All-Time with a leap of 16 feet 7 inches in the long jump. Both pole vaulters set
personal records with PJ Petersen placing 2nd with a vault of 9 feet, which made her the third best vaulter in
school history. Paige McClannan also set a personal record in the pole vault going 8 feet placing sixth at the
meet and 7th All-Time. The duo of Riana Noelle and Paxton Throne set PR's in triple jump going 31'02.5" and
30'01.25".
On the track we set some blazing fast times in the 100 going first, third and fourth. Paige McClannan ran 12.76
winning the race and placing her 10th All-Time. Camille Fowler and Logan Klein ran 13.16 and 13.26. Taylor
Somers placed 5th in the 400 and then shortly after ran the 800 placing second only by .1 seconds. If there
was 2 more meters of track she would have passed for the win. Emily Bedford ran a personal record and
finally breaking the 12 minute barrier in the 3200. She ran 11:59.52 placing her second in the meet and 12th
All-Time.
The highlight of the meet was bringing home a team victory and the moment of the meet was Katie Spencer
breaking the 5 minute mile barrier in a time of 4:58.74. This places her 7th All-TIme in the State of Nebraska
and puts her 32nd nationally as of yesterday.

It was a great start to the 2015 Track Season. The boys team finished 4th with 9 new personal
records set by athletes. The team placed 1st in the High Jump Relay & 4x800m relay, 2nd in the

On Tuesday, April 28 all Juniors will take the ACT® national standardized test. Testing begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. Students need to check-in
prior to testing, so we ask that they report to their testing room by 7:45 a.m. If you ride the bus, your pick-up time will be the same time.
Students need to bring a picture ID, which could be their driver’s license or MSHS ID, for check-in and should be prepared with a #2 pencil and
calculator. If a student does not have a personal ACT®-approved calculator, one will be provided for the test.
General information about ACT® preparation, practice test questions, calculator tips and testing tips can be found at http://
www.actstudent.org/testprep/. To ensure that scores are reported to colleges, students must adhere to the rules set forth by ACT®. Listed
below are the prohibited behaviors as outlined by ACT®. Please review with your Junior the testing expectations of ACT® as well as the
consequences of violating these expectations. Please note that ACT® prohibits all electronic devices, except allowed calculators. Although any
prohibited behavior will result in the voiding of test scores for your student, the most frequent source of voiding test scores is a result of cell
phones. Please encourage your student to leave his/her cell phone at home, put it in his/her vehicle or locker, or check it in at school that
morning in the Parent Center. Per ACT policy for testing, cell phones cannot be stored by proctors in the testing room.
We are committed to college and career readiness for all students. The ACT test is one tool to measure current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining time in high school and post-graduation years. Thank you, in advance, for
your proactive support of your student’s success on the ACT®.
Because this test is administered by a private corporation, the testing requirements are very rigid, meaning that violations of testing protocols
will result in test results being voided. Please read the following provisions your junior needs to meet in order to test and not have testing
scores voided:
1)
All students testing for the ACT® MUST have a picture id present and visible in order to test.
2)
Eating, drinking, and the use of reading materials are not permitted in the test room. No student may have a timer, cell phone, media player, or
electronic device of any kind in the test room or use one during the break, other than a permitted calculator. If a proctor finds that a student has
brought a timer, cell phone, media player, or any other electronic device into the test room, even if he/she is not using it, or a student has one
visible during a break, the student will be dismissed, the device may be confiscated, and the student’s answer document will not be scored.
3)
Soft lead No. 2 pencils with erasers are the only writing utensils to be used for testing.
4)
If a student is wearing a watch with an alarm, it must be turned off before testing begins. If the alarm sounds in the test room, the student will be
dismissed and the student’s answer document will not be scored.
5)
Students are also prohibited from the following behaviors and will be dismissed and have their answer documents voided if the student is found:
looking back at a test on which time has already been called
looking ahead in the test booklet
using a prohibited calculator (see http://www.actstudent.org/faq/answers/calculator.html for more information)
using any device to share or exchange information at any time during testing or during breaks, including cellular phones
using a calculator on any test other than the Mathematics Test
attempting to remove test materials, including test questions or answers, from the test room by any means
using highlight pens, colored pens or pencils, scratch paper, notes, dictionaries, or any testing aids not authorized in advance by ACT®
filling in or altering ovals on a test after time has been called on that test. Filling in or altering ovals on a previous test during a later test, even with
the test booklet closed, is prohibited. If a proctor notices that a test has not been completed and later notices that it has been, the proctor will
dismiss the student and the student’s answer document will not be scored.

Due to testing, school does not start until 12:00PM for 9th, 10th & 12th graders on April 28. The West Doors will be locked that morning so students will
only be permitted to enter through the Main Doors (East side). If students arrive before 11:45AM, they will need to wait in the cafeteria. Students will not
be allowed into the academic wings due to the ACT testing with our 11th graders.
If your student rides the bus, his/her pick-up time will be four hours later than his/her regular time. For Example: If the pick-up time is usually 7:05AM then

The School Community Intervention and Prevention (SCIP) program at Millard
South helps to identify students who might be having problems in school as a
result of drugs/alcohol issues and then refers to appropriate resources in the

Music Department
District Music Contest preparations are well underway. Solos, duets, various small groups,
Singers Choir, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra and Stage One will be performing. The
District Music Contest will be hosted this year at Omaha Benson High School and the Tech
Administration Center on April 22-25. Watch for a detailed schedule of performance times to
be available to students and posted on our website as soon as we know those times.
Millard South will be hosting Drums Across Nebraska on Monday, July 13th at Heedum Field
in Fremont with Midland University since Buell Stadium will be installing a new surface this
summer. Putting together this event is a major undertaking and we need your help! We are
still in need of one or two people to Chair the Concessions and Site portions of this
project. These wonderful chair people will need everyone's help in a variety of arenas. We
will need to find sponsors and program advertisers, ticket sellers, concessions workers,
ushers, parking attendants, folks to work with the judges and many more positions I'm sure I
haven't listed.

Last year we hosted this event and it was a very successful evening. This will be an
opportunity for us to expand our fund raising possibilities more than we ever have. We have
made this an annual show and the main project for the Music Boosters to provide additional
financial support to all the music students in our school. We are constantly looking for
service revenue sources for the Boosters instead of selling merchandise.
DCI has
tremendous potential in that area.
We will also be working concessions for a few track meets this spring so please get on the
Music Booster website and volunteer to help.

Band Families can check the band website for weekly updates and news of upcoming activities
and rehearsal schedules. We encourage the students to visit this site as well so they can be
prepared for the rehearsals. There are a number of links to other great websites that the
students will find helpful.
The Wind Ensemble had a tremendous performance as a Guest Band for the Nebraska State
Bandmasters Convention on March 7th. The group prepared well and presented a top notch
performance for the audience.
The Symphonic Band performed as a part of the State Concert Band Festival and had the
opportunity to work with nationally known clinicians.

The bands traveled to the Winter Park Ski-Music Festival March 26-29 and received
excellent results. Five Millard South groups performed. All 5 received “1” ratings and
WON THEIR DIVISIONS! Congratulations to the Winter Guard, Symphonic Band, Wind
Ensemble, Jazz Band 1 and Jazz Band 2. The students also had a great time skiing, tubing,
swimming and doing things young people should be doing. They were great
representatives for our school and you can be very proud of them.
Jazz Band 1 received a “Superior” rating and placed 2nd and Jazz Band 2 received
“Excellent” rating at the Bellevue East Jazz Festival on March 14 th.
The Band Concert held on March 3rd was an excellent opportunity for our students to
demonstrate the skills they are building in music performance and understanding.
The Winter Guard competed at 5 different contests during the season. Millard South
hosted a contest on Saturday, February 28th. The Patriots Pride placed 5th in Scholastic
B. The Winter Guard will also compete during the Winter Park Ski-Music Festival in
March. Congratulations on a tremendous season and thanks to everyone who helped host
the contest!
The 2015-16 Color Guard auditions will take place April 27 th at Millard South. Any student
who will be at Millard South next year is eligible to audition. Workshops are scheduled to
help students prepare. This is an exciting group that is particularly suitable for those who
have dance, baton or flag experience. Experience is not necessary and we’ve had many
students become experts even beyond our program. Those selected will join the Millard
South Band on the field next fall. If you have any questions please call the Band Office at
402-715-8525.
Mrs. Christa Speed will be filling in for Mrs. Rom while she is home on maternity leave. Mrs. Speed comes
from Grand Island where she retired after leading many very successful orchestra ensembles.
Solo and small ensemble rehearsals for District Music Contest will begin practicing with the accompanist
beginning the first week of April.
Graduation orchestra will begin meeting on Tuesday mornings at 7:00AM in the black box, starting April 28.
Winds, brass, and percussionists interested in joining Graduation Orchestra should stop by Mrs. Rom’s
office for more information. Come be a part of the final musical tribute to this year’s graduating seniors.
The Philharmonic Orchestra will compete at the Nebraska American String Teachers Association's Young
Orchestra Festival held on the campus of the University of Nebraska Lincoln on Saturday May 9. Interested
students can also perform a solo that will be adjudicated.

COUNSELING CENTER OPEN TUESDAY EVENINGS
The Millard South Counseling Center will remain open April
7th and 21st. Currently, there are no specific programs
planned. Parents of 10th and 11th grade students who would
like to get a jump on college planning could use the Tuesday
evening time to get one-on-one assistance. The office is
open after school until 8:00 PM.
The Omaha World Herald will be running a separate
scholarship section this spring along with their selection
containing the All-Academic Team and World Herald
Scholars. They will also list all scholarships for all seniors
from area high schools. Millard South must send their
winners to the World Herald on April 22, 2015. Please
have your student turn in all awards they are offered –
including those they are not planning to accept. We want
them to be recognized for all their hard work. Please also
include the dollar amount of each award. The dollar value of
scholarships is confidential and will not be given to the
World Herald. It is requested for use in total dollar values
reported for an entire school or for certain areas like all
academic scholarship totals, all athletic totals, etc. The
name of the student is not identified with any dollar values
displayed or printed anywhere.

April is a good time to make some college visits with your
soon-to-be senior. College visits are an important part of
selecting a college for students who plan to attend

The Millard High/Millard South High School Hall of Fame Association recognizes and honors outstanding
graduates, staff, administration, parents, and others who have contributed to the school’s tradition of
excellence and who inspire students at Millard South High School. Inductees are honored at a banquet
and awards ceremony and are included in a permanent Hall of Fame display.
Nominees can be living or deceased and can include any of the following Millard High/Millard South
High School persons:





Alumnae who graduated at least 10 years prior to nomination
Retired staff members
Administration
Parents of graduates
Other supporters
