Cells Anything that is considered alive all has these 5 characteristics: 1. Living thing is composed of at least one cell 2. Living thing uses energy to function 3. Living thing responds to its environment 4. Living thing grows and repairs 5. Living thing reproduces We are going to focus more on the first characteristic of living things…cells! There are two types of basic cells, animal cells and plant cells. Structures inside cells are called organelles. Each organelle has a special job Animal Cell Vacuole Place where the cell stores materials Endoplasmic Reticulum Packs and moves proteins Mitochondria Where the cell makes energy Cytoplasm Gel-like substance, holds organelles in place and keeps cell shape Nucleus “Brain of the cell”; controls the cell Cell Membrane Controls what enters and exits the cells Plant Cell Chloroplast Where plant cell makes food from sunlight Nucleus “Brain of the cell”; controls the cell Mitochondria Where the cell makes energy Cytoplasm Gel-like substance, holds organelles in place and keeps cell shape Vacuole Place where the cell stores materials Endoplasmic Reticulum Packs and moves proteins Cell Wall Made from cellulose Protects cell, keeps its shape Cell Membrane Controls what enters and exits the cells
