Styles of communication, case studies, tools and activities will be integrated. Participants will leave with multiple ways to assist in adapting communication skills to the supervisory relationship. This course is geared for beginners as well as seasoned supervisors who would like to look at deepening their understanding of how communication impacts their daily work. A few of the learning objectives we will briefly touch on in this 2 hour pre-conference: Learn your own communication style to employ better communication with staff and grow your skill and effectiveness in asking questions. Increase your ability to assist staff in making changes through the use of constructive feedback and supportive confrontation. This session can be utilized to fulfill part of the Supervision hours for the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement. Dan Porter, MSW, LICSW has over 25 years experience working with children, adolescents, and families in public, residential, hospital and day treatment programs. He is currently the Lead School Social Worker for Northeast Metro Intermediate School District 916 on special assignment to incorporate mental health initiatives district wide, provide supervision, direction, and support for over 30 social workers and has oversight and supervision of the Internship program that provides up to 12 internships for students. Additionally, Dan provides Clinical Supervision to Social Workers for the Profession Matrix, where he has worked for over four years. He currently provides supervision to 13 social workers working in a variety of settings through group and individual supervision. He received his B.A. in Social Work and Sociology, his Masters in Clinical Social Work, and has a Director of Special Education License. Dan serves as the Board President of (MACMH) Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health and Region Representative for (MSSWA) Minnesota School Social Workers Association. Dan has presented at numerous conferences throughout Minnesota on topics such as: Supervision and Ethics, strategies for supporting youth, promoting self-esteem, and school based social skills programs. He was an examination item writer for (ASWB) Association of Social Work Boards and he has been published multiple times doing book reviews in the School Social Work Journal. This presentation will cover social skill curriculum to use in classroom, group and individual sessions with students. Specifically, the presentation will target unconventional learners, which are students that have special education needs (such as ASD, DCD, EBD, OHD, etc.) and/or require alternative learning environments. Topics covered during the presentation will include feeling identification and emotional regulation, sexual health and safety, and social skills. Some specific programs addressed in the presentation will include, but will not be limited to, Emotes, Aggression Replacement Training, and the S.T.A.R.S. Curriculum, as well as adaptations and modifications to these curriculums to meet the needs of the learners will be demonstrated. Participants will walk away with useful curriculum ideas to use across K-12 settings. This session helps meet the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement of two accredited hours. Youth Mental Health First Aid prepares individuals and communities with the knowledge and skills to help individuals who are developing a mental health problem. This evidence -based training helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses. This will be an introduction to the program as the full course is 8-hours. Risk factors and warning signs will be considered as well as specific disorders, responses, and a 5-step action plan to help someone who may be in need. This session can help meet the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement of 2.5 accredited clinical content hours. Participants will benefit from the years of first-hand experience and action research as Val Rae takes them through the steps of professionalizing AAI in K-12 environments. Each participant will receive resources and tools to start or build their AAI work. They will gain a critical understanding of how to select the right animal and receive a copy of Animal Related Guidance: Teaching Social Skills using Pets or Puppets, which includes over 100 high-interest, easy to use social skills lessons. This session can help meet the MN Board of Social Work’s requirement of 6.5 accredited clinical content hours. Goals/Learning Objectives: Participants will receive a wealth of tools and resources to consider as they build their AAI practice Participants will learn how to navigate administrative concerns over animals in school and professionalize the work Participants will have a base of understanding with which they can consider when selecting the appropriate animal to add to their practice Val Rae Boe, Ed.D. Dr. Boe is the principal of Karner Blue Education Center, a federal setting IV special education program in Blaine, MN and adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis. Val Rae worked from 2012 to 2014 with district leadership to plan Karner Blue Education Center, considered to be a national model for an educational facilities designed to meet the unique needs of students with severe disabilities. She conducted extensive research to develop Karner Blue’s nature-based educational foundations, which are supported by the schools design theme, landscaping, and building layout. Val Rae presented the nature-based philosophy to more than 10 Metro school boards between 2013 and 2014. She received her undergraduate degree in education from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, her Masters in Special Education from Minnesota Southwest State University in Marshall, MN, and her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from St. Thomas in Minneapolis. She began her work with special education students as an EBD para, then EBD teacher. She has worked for Northeast Metro 916 since 2006 and has been an administrator since 2009. Her professional publications include “Animal Related Guidance: Teaching Social Skills Using Pets or Puppets”, based on her published research “Effects of Animal-Assisted Therapy on a Student with an Emotional/Behavioral Disorder”. Val Rae grew up on a farm in western MN and has loved nature and animals since she was very young. In fact, she brought home many stray or injured creatures, which included raccoon, birds, dogs and cats. Since 2006 she has been leading the initiative to bring Animal Assisted Interactions (AAI) to Northeast Metro Intermediate 916 School District’s programs for students with disabilities. Attaining these benefits for staff and children has become critical as stress in the schools increases. This workshop will be both didactic and experimental. It will provide an overview of the benefits of mindfulness as well as the opportunity to experience mindfulness practices. This workshop will help to develop your own mindfulness practice as well as learn ways to introduce and practice mindfulness with children. Objectives: Provide an overview of what mindfulness is and how it can help us to be more present, notice ourselves and maintain better focus Provide opportunities for practicing mindfulness Provide resources in how to teach mindfulness to kids of all ages Goals: Understand the benefits of mindfulness practice for ourselves as providers as well as the clients we treat Understand what mindfulness is and how to practice it in your daily life Learn how to present and practice mindfulness with students of all ages Jeannine Myrvik, is an LICSW with 17 years experience working in mental health. Jeannine has been using mindfulness as a core part of her practice for over 15 years.
