2015 County Contests
It is time for 4-H county contests. You must participate in a county contest to be eligible to go to Club Congress or Project Achievement Day. If you have signed up for
a contest there are three days for you to choose from to come in and do your contest.
These days are: Thursday, April 2nd; Monday, April 6th; and Friday, April 10th.
You may come to the Extension Office anytime between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Please call us and let us know what time you can come. If you have questions,
please call us at 423-7016.
April County Council
This month’s County Council meeting will be held Thursday, April 9th at the Golden
City Hall at 6:00 PM. Ever yone is welcome to attend this meeting. A light meal
will be served so please call by Wednesday, April 8th and sign up so we can prepare
enough food.

Poster Contest Information
There are two different poster contests that you can participate in that are coming up. These contests are open to all junior and
senior members ages 8-18 as of January 1, 2015.
Mississippi Poster Art Contest:
The theme for this poster contest is I Am 4-H, or you may use your own theme. A member may submit only one poster in this
contest. The poster must be on a .016 ply construction poster board (solid fiber board) that is 14 x 22 inches in dimension (half the
standard size sheet of poster board). Posters may be any medium (ink, crayon, acrylic, charcoal, oil or collage) but cannot be 3dimensional. Posters incorporating copyrighted material (such as cartoon characters) will not be accepted. Open theme participants are urged to avoid “Join 4-H” themes or theme ideas that have been used nationally in the past. The three most outstanding
posters in the state will receive cash awards: Sr. 1st place-$25; 2nd place-$15; 3rd place-$10; Jr. 1st place $15; 2nd place-$10; 3rd
place-$5.
Dairy Poster Art Contest:
The 2015 Dairy Poster Art Contest theme is Get More With Milk. The poster must be 22 x 28 inches and can be on poster board
or a substitute. Do not use brand names or copyrighted material. Posters will be judged by the following factors: attracts attention,
original or well-adapted, follows theme, conveys message, accurate information, and general appearance. Awards are given at the
state level with 1st place receiving $100, 2nd place receiving $75, and 3rd place receiving $50.
These posters must be turned into our office by Wednesday, May 21st, no later than 5:00 PM.

Shooting Sports News



The Shooting Sports Club will have air rifle, air pistol, and .22 LR practice April 11th and April 18th. Air rifle and air pistol
will practice at 9:00 AM at the Fairgrounds and .22 will practice at 12:00 PM.
Shotgun practice will be every Friday at 4 PM and every Saturday at 1 PM at the Iuka Police Department shooting range.
Archery will practice April 4th, April 11th, April 18th at the Fairgrounds from 12:00–2:00 PM.
The Northeast District Competition is April 25 in Blue Springs. Registration fees are $10 per discipline and a current health and
code of conduct form needs to accompany each youth participating on the day of the NE competition. Event registration will
begin at 7:00 AM on April 25. The gate will be open at 6:30 AM. The Opening Ceremony will begin at 8:45 AM & live fire
will begin at 9:00 AM. Registration opens on April 7 and closes at 5 PM on April 16. Please come by our office or call us for
information regarding registration.
Land Judging Contest Results
Our senior land judging team placed first at the State Land Judging Contest on March 24. The team members were Charles Aurora, Kelly Aurora, Jonah Holland, and Lane Hutcheson. Congratulations to these kids! They now have the opportunity to compete
at the National Land Judging Contest which will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on May 5-7.
Renaissance Day
There will be a Renaissance Day at the Old Tishomingo Courthouse Museum on Saturday, April 18 from 9 AM-4 PM. Many
clubs and organizations will be there doing demonstrations such as basket weaving, soap making, quilting, woodworking, spinning and weaving, pottery, milking goats, and many other things. Everyone is welcome to attend this event and see how things
were done in the “good old days.” For more information, please contact Cindy Nelson at 423-3500.
Photography Contests
Horticulture Photography Contest
This is a contest for digital and film pictures of horticulture (plants). The rules for this contest can be found at
http://msucares.com/counties/amite_3/horticulture_photography_rules.pdf.
Each entry must be mounted and accompanied by a completed NJHA entry form.
These entries are due in the Extension Office by June 15th at 5:00 PM.
Photography Exhibit Contest
This contest includes digital and traditional photography exhibits and is open to all members ages 8-18 as of January 1, 2014.
The 4-H member must photograph all entries submitted, but does not have to be enrolled in the photography project. There are
three divisions: traditional film (35mm), digital, or creative digital. Junior and senior entries will be judged separately. The best
five entries overall in each category will be declared the winning junior entries. A county may submit a total of 18 entries, but
only three entries per category (nine junior and nine senior entries.) Duplications or photos that are VERY SIMILAR such as a
color and/or black/white photo as the same image are discouraged and may be disqualified.
TRADITIONAL (FILM)
Print (black and white and/or color) must be from a 35mm negative, not a disk or slide). For each entry, you must submit one
8”x10” (photographic) print in a clear 8”x10” or 8.5”x11” page protector. Enclose the whole strip of uncut negatives (usually 46) in an unsealed letter-size envelope. On the outside of the envelope containing the negative, please indicate the frame number
of the negative to use for enlargement.
DIGITAL
This category can include black and white and/or color print with very minor adjustments, and have only had VERY MINOR
tone, color and contrast adjustments.
CREATIVE DIGITAL
This category can include black and white and/or color prints that have been greatly manipulated or digitally altered/enhanced.
Photos must have been noticeably altered or enhanced … no minor adjustments here! You must also submit the original photo
along with the one print of the creatively enhanced photo. Note: If a photocomposition or collage is created, (one photo edited
together with pieces of several other photos), the 4-H member submitting the entry must have taken all photographs used in the
composition. The original photos used for the composition can be either film or digitally created. Please be aware that all photos
that are published in books and magazines are copyrighted. Illegally scanning and copying of these photos for use in a composition is against the Federal Copyright Law.
For each entry in the digital and creative digital category, you must submit one 4” x 6” or 8” x 10” photo to be judged on
the county level. If the photo is selected to be enter ed in the state competition, you must then submit a 8" x 10"
(photographic) print of the photo in a clear 8" x 10" or 8.5" x 11" page protector (if you submitted a 8” x 10” photo to be judged
at the county level, you may use that photo; it’s not necessary to have another one printed). In order to show the most detail in
your final print, do not submit prints from an ink-jet printer. Take your final edited image file to a film processor to be printed
(such as: Wal-Mart or Walgreens).
In addition to the one 8" x 10" print for each entry, a CD with the final edited image file must be submitted for each entry. The
final file should be at least 300 dpi at the 8" x 10" size.
To ensure adequate reproduction quality, all photos entered in the digital or creative digital category must be taken with at least a
3 megapixel camera. We will label all entries (film, digital, creative digital) at the Extension Office (do not write any information or place a label directly on he back of the prints, as it will ruin the prints).
These entries are due in the Extension Office no later than May 1st at 5:00 PM.
Horse Photography Contest
This contest is open to junior and senior members and includes digital and 35mm photo. These photos must be taken by the
member submitting it and it must have a horse/equid as the primary focus of the picture. There are four categories: breed promotion, action, nonaction/candid, and human interest. Digital and 35mm photos in each category will be judged together. Members
may submit only one entry per category and photos must have been taken since July 1, 2014. The photos may be color or black
and white and must be a printed 5”x 7”. All digital photos must include both original and altered photos and be mounted on separate poster board. For more specific rules, please contact our office at 423-7016 and we will be glad to get them to you.
These entries are due in the Extension Office no later than June 1st at 5:00 PM.
Horse Ownership
Please remember that the deadline for ownership of horses that you plan to show at the 2015 District and State Horse
Show is MAY 1st. This is grade horses as well as registered horses! This is also the deadline to be an enrolled 4-H
member. Rule books and entry forms should be available within a few weeks. All entries are due in the office no later
than May 1st. Please contact our office by April 1st for forms. The Northeast District Horse Show will be held June 1013 and the State Horse Show will be held June 23-27, 2015.
Horse Related Contests (No Horse Needed)
The following contests are open to junior and senior 4-H members. You do not have to own a horse to participate. The
junior contests will be held at the District Horse Show June 10-13 in Starkville and the senior contests will be held at
the State Horse Show held June 23-27, 2015. If you would like more information about these contests, please contact
our office by April 1st.
Horse Bowl Contest
This competition tests your knowledge of horse-related matters. Our county must have a team of 4-5 people to participate. The top three junior teams will advance to the Horse Bowl Contest at the State Horse Show competition.
Horse Individual & Team Demonstrations
This contest consists of a demonstration or presentations that must relate to the horse industry. Junior demonstrations
should be 5-10 minutes long and senior demonstrations should be 10-15 minutes long.
Horse Public Speaking
This contest consists of giving a speech with the subject matter pertaining to the horse industry. Senior speech lengths
must be 7-10 minutes and junior speech lengths must be 3-5 minutes. The top three junior individuals from each district
will advance to the state contest.
Horse Judging
This is a team contest where you will place 2-3 classes of horses and give oral reasons. The top three junior teams and
top three individuals will advance to the Horse Judging competition at the State Horse Show.
Hippology (Seniors Only)
This contest provides a friendly but competitive opportunity for members to demonstrate their knowledge of equine
(horse) science and management, particularly the practical application of this knowledge and skill. Our county can only
enter one team of 3-4 members in this contest that consists of an exam, stations, judging, and team problems.
Horse Art
A member may enter artwork in several different mediums that are horse related. PLEASE CONTACT OUR OFFICE
FOR MORE SPECIFIC RULES.
Record Books
If you are interested in completing a record book and need forms please contact our office and we will be glad to get
them to you. All record books (Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Volunteer) are due in our office by June 15th at 5:00
PM.
Senior 4-H Resumes
Another phase of the record keeping program is the 4-H Resume. This opportunity is available only for senior 4-H
members ages 15-18. Members submitting resumes must have actively been enrolled in 4-H during the current year.
There is an application that has to be filled out that will be judged at the state level. There is also an interview if your
resume is selected. A 4-H member can submit a record book and a resume in the same year either in the same project
category or in two different project categories. For more information, or for forms, please contact our office.
