“there are so many fantastic moments in this
production and whether it’s a gospel hymn or the

Perdido Farmers Market grand opening June 20 at Baars Field
lauren Kay to play, Perdido chamber plans array of family activities
farmers’ market fans in the Perdido area will no longer have to
travel to Gulf shores (Gulf state Park) and foley (county rd. 20
east) to get a fresh veggie fix or homemade goods. at least
through the end of october, the Perdido farmers Market will be
open every saturday at baars field from 8 a.m. ‘til 1 p.m. beginning June 20. collectibles, local art, produce and vegetable vendors and food trucks will be spread throughout baars field,
located at 13001 sorrento road. vendors will be there every saturday, rain or shine, throughout the summer. for more market
info, visit facebook/perdidofarmersmarket.
amanda castillo and Kathleen leidner have taken the lead as
market coordinators, as part of the Perdido Key chamber of commerce enchancement committee. the Perdido Key chamber
plans a grand opening at the site on June 20, with music from
highly regarded local songwriter (pictured) lauren Kay and other
festivities for the entire family.
Kay recently released a self titled cd of 10 original songs featuring lauren on guitar and Hurricane Jane’s anthony and savannah crawford on vocals and a variety of other instruments.
crawford produced the cd at his admiral bean studio in loxley.
a Pensacola native, Kay started playing professionally with
bubba & them at the Point restaurant on innerarity Point
back in 1996. she was only 17 years old, but she had already
found her voice while growing up to the songs of female country
greats like Patsy cline, loretta lynn and tammy Wynette.
after years of playing the Gulf coast and a stint in asheville,
lauren has developed a style that is both bluesy and rootsy - a
little bit sheryl crow and a little bit bonnie rait, yet still all
her own. she still sits in with bubba & them for a song or two
on occasion and can be seen on the band photo that hangs on a
wall at the Point.
“that’s pretty cool,’’ she said. “i was just a kid then, but i’ve
been playing music ever since. there is really nothing else i’ve
ever wanted to do.’’
lauren plays locally as a solo artist and in duos, most often
with guitarist Jonathan newton (Jezebel’s chillin). Her cd is
available at cd baby and itunes.

By Fran Thompson
the city of orange beach Junior Marksman
Program will host a sporting clays shoot, the
first of four scheduled instructional shoots of
the summer under the direction of coordinator
chris litton (pictured), on June 20 at the orange beach Police dept. shooting range. the
range is located behind the
obPd training room at the entrance to the orange beach
sportsplex on William silvers
Pkwy.
by design, cost for kids to participate is only $10 per session
and that includes ammunition,
guns, eye and ear protection, use
of bows and arrows and guns,
snacks, drinks and instruction.
the reason the city of orange beach is able to
keep the registration fee so low is that almost
all of the ammunition, beverages and food are
donated, according to litton.
“the whole point is that we don’t want to turn
anyone away. We want all kids to have an opportunity to learn gun safety,’’ litton said. “We
provide everything. all the kids have to bring is
proper shoes. We don’t want them doing a snake
dance if they step on an ant hill.’’
litton added that the class is set up for
younger children who have no experience
around guns, not children who shoot and hunt
regularly. classes are limited to 30 participants
ages 8 to 15. (younger or older children may attend pending approval). each event will be different and the participants will learn new skills
at each. firearm safety is stressed throughout
the entire class.
“We believe in teaching gun safety through
practice, not abstinence,’’ litton said. “if nothing else, we will make sure these kids leave the
class being hyper-sensitive to muzzle discipline
(which way the gun is pointed).’’
scheduled sessions also include instruction
about archery, rifles and muzzle loaders. the
program is being held in conjunction with the
al. dept. of conservation. the other dates and
activities include rifles on July 18; archery (at
the o.b. recreation center) on July 24; and
muzzle loaders on august 1. Hours for each
event are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. eye protection, ear
protection, snacks, and drinks will be provided.
the city of orange beach Junior Marksman
Program also sponsors a dove hunt at alligator
alley in the fall and an overnight winter deer
hunt every winter for children 8 to 15.
“of course, everything starts with safety instruction,’’ litton said. “this is for kids that
might not get the opportunity otherwise. it’s all
about making it a positive experience.’’
litton, an 11 year city of orange beach employee, started the Junior Marksman Program
seven years ago. He is a certified nra rifle instructor and a certified shooting range safety
officer.
His program’s mission statement is “to foster
and promote gun safety awareness and the
shooting sports by educating the public, especially the youth.”
for more program info or to register, call litton at 251- 981-6028.
WIDESPREAD FANS GETTIN’ IT DONE: Karla Gardner, a volunteer & food
drive manager with the bay area food bank, reported that fans at the recent
Widespread Panic show at the Wharf donated 1,983 pounds of food (above left)
and $875 in cash, which will help the food bank provide an estimated 5,900
meals to neighbors in need along the central Gulf coast! “between the food and
funds collected at our food bank table, including several online donations made
by those that didn't have cash with them, and the additional food and funds
picked up from Gulf chrysler dodge Jeep, this is by far our best effort to date,’’
Gardner said. “the wonderful WsP fans made this event such a success.’’ limited edition official flopper's ball prints (above center) are still available at
stemz flower shop in foley, david's Gallery in Gulf shores and the isle of
‘bama toy store at the Wharf for the price of a $15 donation to the bay area
food bank. Just to make sure WsP fans were perceived as good neighbors,
stemz flowers and erin elizabeth Kaiser organized a group of WsP fans that
retrieved (above right) 20 bags of trash from local beaches on the morning following the show. (Right) food drive & floppers ball organizers Jen & Mike butler and Wayne Jones. (Michelle Stancil Photos).

GUMBO KEY RETURNS TO PERDIDO PASS ON JUNE 20
Wes Loper, Adam Holt, Roddy Romero to headline 2nd annual boaters’ party
By Fran Thompson
although the islands at the entry
to Perdido Pass draw a huge flotilla
of boats every weekend during the
summer season, that number will
increase exponentially for five hours
on saturday, June 20, when Gumbo
Key returns with its annual barge
concert in Perdido Pass (between
bird island& ono island).
Mac Mcaleer, the main sponsor
and Gumbo Key founder, said close
to 1,000 people have already sent
facebook rsvP responses for the
event.
“i don’t know how that translates
into the number of boats. but i will
say it is looking very strong. it’s
going to be a powerful year,’’
Mcaleer said.
event hours are noon until 5 p.m.,
and Wes loper, adam Holt and roddie romero will all lead their bands
from the barge stage.
Mcaleer and other Gumbo Key
sponsors will take care of everything else.
there will be two jon-boats stationed in front of the stage to collect
trash. organizers will have 1,000
garbage bags ready for anybody
needing one.
“We’re really pushing the impor-
tance of cleaning up after ourselves
and making sure we are careful
around the bird sanctuaries,’’
Mcaleer said. “We need to make
sure we protect these islands. it’s
one of our tag lines. ‘don’t leave a
trace.’’’
Mcaleer has posted an aerial
photo showing protected sea grass
beds that boaters should avoid on
the Gumbo Key website and facebook page. Police will be onhand to
steer boats away from protected and
sensitive areas.
Mcaleer said, most of all, Gumbo
Key is about family fun, which is his
reason for starting and shutting the
event down relatively early.
“at the end of the day, it’s about
having fun,’’ he said. “let’s have
some fun.’’
Adam Holt Band - Noon
adam Holt’s self described sound
is new southern rock. With his
traditional stage stance being a rock
three piece, reminiscent of cream
and Hendrix, Holt adds another
variable to the equation; the powerful and convincing vocals of wife Jillian Holt. Holt has played with a
non-stop rock-a-holic attitude
throughout the southern u.s., from
major music festivals to hole-in-the-
wall juke joints for the past 20
years, sharing the stage with legends and locals.
Wes Loper Band - 1:45 p.m.
With well over 1,000 live performances, Mobile native Wes loper (pictured below) knows how to
entertain a crowd. He has a way of
blending music genres that has fans
opening their hearts. His mix of
rock, country, blues, and folk music
creates his own style with a funky,
beach side feel. now residing in the
nashville area, Wes still makes regular tour stops here. Wes released
his fourth album, somethin’ real, in
June 2012.
Roddie Romero & Hub City - 3p.m.
the Grammy nominated louisiana
based band has been spreading the
gospel of traditional cajun and creole music worldwide at prestigious
festivals and venues for over 20
years. the band has been described
as notorious louisiana-roots-rockers. and their energetic show could
make a dead man dance. fans can
expect great, original music from
one of the tightest bands ever to
emerge from the swamps of
louisiana. His band opened for
Jimmy buffett during the 2010
cMt concert on Gulf shores beach.
The Mayor Of Gumbo Key
“it’s all about Having fun.”
Gumbo Key Mayor Mac Mcaleer, owner of Homeport Marina
in Gulf shores and the man who took Krispy Kreme public, debuted as a floating stage concert promoter when the Mobile native booked the Wet Willie band to play on a barge adjacent to
the designated sinking spot of a retired 271 ft. coastal freighter
that is now thriving as the Miss lulu artificial reef.
He followed that up by hiring the adam Holt band to play on a
barge that followed the 2013 Gulf shores nautical christmas
boat Parade up the intracoastal canal from lulu’s to the Wharf.
on June 21 of last year, he officially claimed a spot in Perdido
Pass between ono & bird islands to be Gumbo Key. He even set
out a circle of foam rubber noodles around the five hour municipality.
“Well, at least for five hours i’ll be mayor. that’s about all i can
handle. We can all get inside of Gumbo Key, stir things up and
cook and simmer away the afternoon,’’ Mcaleer said at the time.
“it’s all about having fun. it’s time to have some fun.’’
Gumbo Key Good Citizenship Guide
“be Kind. be safe. don’t leave a trace.”
Welcome to Gumbo Key
“a tropical Place that Moves With the breeze”
Gumbo Key is a tropical, mythical place that appears from time to time. this floating musical venue
is a place for friends and family to meld together in our Gulf coastal waters while soaking up the fine
sounds of live southern bands. this year's event falls during weekend of the summer solstice and
the first day of summer 2015. start your summer with us!
bring your own boat or a friend with one! We'll be shooting to start the party around high noon, and
aim to pull up anchor by 5 o'clock somewhere. What does it cost? all we ask is that you support our
awesome local sponsors!
- Mac McAleer, Mayor, Gumbo Key
Keep your trash out of the splash (and off the islands). Please
stow it on your boat and take it with you when you go. leave only
your footprints.
Please don't leave footprints in the interior sand dunes and
areas enclosed by fencing. those are important nesting spots for
blue herons and others, and we don't want to disturb them.
Please obey no-motor and no-wake zones and idle or raise your
motor when navigating shallow waters. take special care in seagrass beds, which serve as habitats for many beloved creatures,
such as shrimp, crabs, frish, birds, manatees, and sea turtles.
Please avoid damaging these habitats. vessels please steer clear
of the protected grass areas.
be safe. behave. Get along. Watch out for each other. Have a good
time. boat responsibly. respect each other. respect our islands.

Sassafrass creating a “Sassy Buzz” with new CD release
Jo billups and Karen Harvill, the locally based musical environmentalists known as sassafrass, have released their latest
folk-rock record, “sassy buzz.” alternately listed online as “sassy
bees,” their new record contains eight original folk songs and is
published on the Key Mark records independent music label.
Heartfelt, uplifting and colorfully well-written and performed,
“sassy buzz” brings nature conservation in
the form of folk music to listeners, which is
not surprising since the band lists bob dylan
and Joan baez as musical influences, along
with bonnie raitt, Jackson browne, the beatles and the allman brothers.
taking the first two as a base and stirring in
certain elements of the rest of the list brings
the music fan close to the style of sassafrass,
the tone of which is consistently sunny and warm, and lyrically
medicinal in terms of social good. this dependable goodness has
been cataloged variously as folk-rock, contemporary folk, and
even children's music, each of which is apropos.
billups and Harvill share singing, playing and songwriting duties on the new cd. the sassafrass repertoire includes not only
several previous records, “Peace love sassafrass,” “Green rock”
and “the line is drawn.”
they’ve also written a selection of ecologically minded books intended to educate people of all reading ages about endangered
species, alternative energy sources and a wide variety of other
green concerns. these books and records are available from sassafrassgreenrock.com
“We saw the need for environmental education and wanted to
find a way to address issues and teach global responsibility
through books and music,’’ billups said. “the message sassafrass
would like to get across is the planet is fragile and it is our job to
care for everything from whales to snails.”
the band spends much more time onstage than in the studio
and boast a loving, loyal fan base. they have performed for ecological organizations in denmark, copenhangen and Mexico and
for the sierra club, Greenpeace and other festivals.
Pub and coffeehouse crowds also have found their beautifully
performed compositions to be as rousing as love songs, which, in
essence, they are.

education that offers students a chance to gain practical exposure to industries and careers during their high school years. “it
was through our association with the alabama restaurant and Hospitality alliance (arHa) that we were able to coordinate this

the students and look forward to a long relationship with Wenonah High school going forward. these students truly brought a
renewed energy to everyone they met.” While visiting the hotel the students took property tours, spent time in all major functional
operational areas, listened to presentations by each department manager and enjoyed a pizza party and volleyball on the beach.

tacky Jacks. “our stay at the Perdido beach resort was awesome,’’ said angela evans, a senior in the academy of Hospitality

WHAT’S HAPPENING
WED, JUNE 10
Four Unplugged brings its own party to Flora-Bama June 11-13
four unplugged now has more than four members and is very much
plugged in, but the band, which returns to Perdido Key’s flora-bama for
multiple sets beginning at 10 p.m. June 11-13, it all started with a
chance vacation stop at the ‘bama by founding members ricky and Jan
Windhorst.
as the couple spent the day watching George ridder, lonnie ferguson
and the diving ducks, they were inspired to form a band of their own.
the band took its name from its original line-up of four all-acoustic musicians during the heyday of Mtv unplugged. but after the first two
years, all that changed. crowds got larger. bass and drums were added.
then sax. eventually the band turned into the musical party machine
it is today.
the band consists of louisiana Music Hall of fame members ricky
and Jan Windhorst on vocals and keyboards, respectively (Jan also
sings). randy bidleman on drums, Kenny schneider on guitars and vocals, Jimmy belew on saxophone and craig courtney on bass guitar
and vocals. sound engineer tony corley brings it all together.
Windhorst is excited about arriving a day early to perform a special
acoustic reunion show in the flora-bama main room on June 11 at 10
p.m. old bandmates rick samson and dave lemoine will join rick and
Jan on stage, other surprise guests are also expected to sit in.
“We’re calling it the reunion of four unplugged unplugged,’’ ricky said.
“this promises to be a special beginning to an already amazing weekend.’’
the band is ready to get back to the flora~bama after missing last
year due to scheduling conflicts, and they will arrive with their own entourage, affectionately known as the fourheads. even ‘bama regulars
agree that the notoriously wild and crazy flora-bama turns it up a
notch when the fourheads roll into town. the band’s weekend trips to
the ‘bama are so popular in louisiana that a local radio station found
sponsors to promote a vacation give-away promoting the beach weekend. the tag line on the commercial: “last one out of st. tammany
Parish, please turn off the lights.”
the band is not afraid to tackle any and all genres of music, and with
a song list of several hundred songs, they have been known to play two
separate four hour shows without repeating a song.
“our local fans see us all the time. so we keep adding to and changing
the set lists. We’ve worked up a ton of new songs and plan on bringing
back favorites from the bands almost 20 year history. all i know is i
can’t wait.”
and why it that, ricky?
“it’s such a special place to play,’’ he said. “i know everyone says that,
i’ve seen interviews with Kenny chesney and other artists who say the
same thing. it’s hard to explain, but it really is a special place for all
types of music. i think it’s a blend of the vibe, the crowd, the history and
the venue. Party music, the beach and the flora-bama, it just doesn’t
get any better.”
the charm of the flora~bama even inspired one of four unplugged’s
original songs, “flora~bama time.”
lines like, “oyster shells, funky smells, a slice of heaven and a pinch
of hell, that’s flora~bama down on the line” pretty much sum up the
band’s experiences at the lounge on the line over the years.

AMBASSADORS DEDICATE TIME, PASSION TO
BEACH TOURISM BUREAU: Gulf shores & orange
beach tourism recently celebrated an exceptional group of
advocates for the alabama Gulf coast – its volunteer ambassadors – at the tourism bureau’s annual ambassador
luncheon at craft farms. from greeting guests on the
front lines in the welcome centers to prepping welcome
bags for sports events and corporate meetings, the ambassadors volunteer countless hours to promote alabama’s
beaches. the organization recognized two distinguished individuals at this year’s luncheon – anne dougherty as ambassador of the year and linda flack for her retirement
in May 2015 after 25 years of service to the convention and
visitors bureau (cvb).
originally from Minnesota, dougherty and her husband
frank spent five winters on alabama’s beaches in the early
2000s and decided to make Gulf shores home in 2006.
dougherty has proudly served as an ambassador since
2008 and says she is lucky to live in such a beautiful place
with an easy pace of life. “i’m thrilled to receive this award
because all of these people work so hard,” dougherty says.
“being an ambassador has given me the opportunity to
meet wonderful people who are warm and friendly. i’ve enjoyed every minute of it!” flack marked 25 years as a vacation specialist for the cvb in early 2015, and is
transitioning to retirement, or “extended vacation” as she calls it, from her “dream job.”
according to Kim chapman, director of hospitality and information for the tourism bureau, the ambassador program is vital to the cvb, and she encourages locals to volunteer. anyone 18 or older is welcome to apply
to become a Gulf shores & orange beach tourism ambassador. contact susan brush at [email protected] or 251-968-9325 for more details. Pictured: (above) Gulf shores & orange beach tourism ambassadors; (above right) the organization recognized anne dougherty (left) as ambassador of the year and

NEW SEAFOOD MARKET IN PERDIDO KEY: a new
seafood market has opened at villagio Marketplace in Perdido
Key. tc's seafood, owned by innerarity Point native teresa
eagan and her husband, Josh is open daily from 8 a.m. ‘til 6
p.m. they offer a variety of Gulf shrimp, including royal reds,
and fresh catch fish right off the boats. there is no charge to

oysters, crabmeat, shrimp dip and tc's homemade seafood
gumbo. other fresh offerings include smoked tuna dip, West indies crab salad and cheesy crab dip. Homemade Keylime pie

as an added bonus, the walls of t.c.’s seafood are lined with
the award winning artwork of innerarity Point neighbor Tony
Krysinsky, who uses a combination of engraved imagery and
transparent layers of acrylic glazes on tempered hardboard
panels to create a unique style. “i use a router to engrave the
linear design elements into the panel and then brush on layers
of glazes for the colors,’’ he said. “the result is a colorful and
textural surface of carved and painted images that are reminiscent of a wood or linoleum block.’’ each of his pieces comes
framed and ready to hang. the frames are all made of maple
hardwood.they are simple and unfinished, which works well
with the work itself. He also does custom commission work. although he travels to shows all over the southeast, tony still
finds time to surf and stand-up paddle board with his family.

2014 was another record breaking tourism year for Pleasure Isle
Herb Malone, president and ceo for Gulf shores & orange beach
tourism, announced that 2014 was a record breaking year for local
tourism. last year’s record-breaking tourism also accounted for more
than 46,000 travel-related jobs and $1.2 billion travel-related wages,
boosting the economy along alabama’s beaches. the tourism bureau also
reported year-to-date 2015 numbers with a 14 percent increase in retail
sales and 8 percent increase for lodging. Malone noted that 2014 marked
the fourth consecutive tourism year for Gulf shores and orange beach.
“in 2014, baldwin county welcomed 5.7 million people to the area – our
invited guests – who spent $3.5 billion in travel-related expenditures,”
said Malone, who made the announcement at the Gulf shores & orange
beach tourism summit at erie Meyer civic center.
Keynote speaker Mack collier, social media strategist and author of
“think like a rockstar,” compared brands and destinations to rockstars,
inspiring local leaders to develop brand advocates in loyal customers. He
explained that stars such as taylor swift interact with fans, empowering
fan bases rather than simply showcasing themselves.
“rockstars act on user-generated content, which is trustworthy,” collier
explained. “fans create trustworthy content and have more passion for
that brand. fans have the ability to change opinions.”
the social guru emphasized the importance of saying “thank you” to loyal
customers when they promote your brand on social media. “When cultivating advocates, you cultivate sales and revenues,” he said.
following the keynote, Joanie flynn, vice president of marketing for
Gsobt, informed industry partners about the benefits of engaging with
the convention and visitors bureau. lee sentell, director of the alabama
tourism department, introduced bill dinan of luckie & co, the state’s
tourism advertising partner. dinan explained the significance of the onalabama road trips campaign and 2015’s year of alabama bbQ.
“the alabama road trips campaign has been overwhelmingly successful and inclusive to deliver a promise of genuine southern hospitality,”
dinan said.

a social club designed to introduce members of the community to each other and to
civic and educational opportunities available in south baldwin county. sbnc members endeavor to give back to the community with fund-raising activities throughout the year. toast of the coast is the club’s primary fundraiser held at the first of
each calendar year. it is a festive evening celebrating the delicious dishes available
at baldwin county coastal restaurants with samplings from their menus. and,
guests have the opportunity to bid on items donated by local merchants in a silent
auction. throughout the remainder of the year monies are raised at the monthly
luncheons by the sale of raffle tickets for gifts donated by members. Membership in
the club is not limited to newcomers; established members of the area join south
baldwin newcomers’ club as a means of meeting and interacting with newer residents. smaller special interest groups provide additional opportunities for experiencing life on the coast. Monthly meetings are held the first tuesday of the month
with a summer break for July. for mpore info, visit southbaldwinnewcomers.com.

enhanced by a wider group of coordinating, performing and exhibiting professional artists. tuition for the entire week is $100 (siblings $85);

Murphy showed up at Mass one
sunday and the priest almost fell
down when he saw him.
He'd never been to church in his
life. after Mass, the priest caught
up with him and said,
"Murphy, i am so glad ya decided
to come to Mass. What made ya
come?"
Murphy said, "i got to be honest
with you father, a while back, i
misplaced me hat and i
really, really love that hat. i know
that McGlynn had a hat just like
mine and i knew he came to church
every sunday. i also knew that he
had to take off his hat during Mass.
so, i was going to leave after communion and steal McGlynn's hat."
the priest said, "Well, Murphy, i
notice that ya didn't steal McGlynn's hat. What changed your
mind?"
Murphy replied, "Well, after i
heard your sermon on the 10 com-
mandments, i decided that i didn't
need to steal McGlynn's hat after
all."
With a tear in his eye the priest
gave Murphy a big smile and said;
"after i talked about 'thou shalt
not steal' ya decided you would
rather do without your hat than
burn in Hell?"
Murphy slowly shook his head.
"no, father, after ya talked about
'thou shalt not commit adultery,’ i
remembered where i left me hat."
