Kay recently released a self titled cd of 10 original songs featuring lauren on guitar and Hurricane Jane’s anthony and savannah crawford on vocals and a variety of other instruments. crawford produced the cd at his admiral bean studio in loxley. a Pensacola native, Kay started playing professionally with bubba & them at the Point restaurant on innerarity Point back in 1996. she was only 17 years old, but she had already found her voice while growing up to the songs of female country greats like Patsy cline, loretta lynn and tammy Wynette. after years of playing the Gulf coast and a stint in asheville, lauren has developed a style that is both bluesy and rootsy - a little bit sheryl crow and a little bit bonnie rait, yet still all her own. she still sits in with bubba & them for a song or two on occasion and can be seen on the band photo that hangs on a wall at the Point. “that’s pretty cool,’’ she said. “i was just a kid then, but i’ve been playing music ever since. there is really nothing else i’ve ever wanted to do.’’ lauren plays locally as a solo artist and in duos, most often with guitarist Jonathan newton (Jezebel’s chillin). Her cd is available at cd baby and itunes. Bayfest offering local bands chance to take the stage bayfest is offering the exciting opportunity to play the 21st annual festival. By Fran Thompson the city of orange beach Junior Marksman Program will host a sporting clays shoot, the first of four scheduled instructional shoots of the summer under the direction of coordinator chris litton (pictured), on June 20 at the orange beach Police dept. shooting range. the range is located behind the obPd training room at the entrance to the orange beach sportsplex on William silvers Pkwy. by design, cost for kids to participate is only $10 per session and that includes ammunition, guns, eye and ear protection, use of bows and arrows and guns, snacks, drinks and instruction. the reason the city of orange beach is able to keep the registration fee so low is that almost all of the ammunition, beverages and food are donated, according to litton. “the whole point is that we don’t want to turn anyone away. We want all kids to have an opportunity to learn gun safety,’’ litton said. “We provide everything. all the kids have to bring is proper shoes. We don’t want them doing a snake dance if they step on an ant hill.’’ litton added that the class is set up for younger children who have no experience around guns, not children who shoot and hunt regularly. classes are limited to 30 participants ages 8 to 15. (younger or older children may attend pending approval). each event will be different and the participants will learn new skills at each. firearm safety is stressed throughout the entire class. “We believe in teaching gun safety through practice, not abstinence,’’ litton said. “if nothing else, we will make sure these kids leave the class being hyper-sensitive to muzzle discipline (which way the gun is pointed).’’ scheduled sessions also include instruction about archery, rifles and muzzle loaders. the program is being held in conjunction with the al. dept. of conservation. the other dates and activities include rifles on July 18; archery (at the o.b. recreation center) on July 24; and muzzle loaders on august 1. Hours for each event are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. eye protection, ear protection, snacks, and drinks will be provided. the city of orange beach Junior Marksman Program also sponsors a dove hunt at alligator alley in the fall and an overnight winter deer hunt every winter for children 8 to 15. “of course, everything starts with safety instruction,’’ litton said. “this is for kids that might not get the opportunity otherwise. it’s all about making it a positive experience.’’ litton, an 11 year city of orange beach employee, started the Junior Marksman Program seven years ago. He is a certified nra rifle instructor and a certified shooting range safety officer. His program’s mission statement is “to foster and promote gun safety awareness and the shooting sports by educating the public, especially the youth.” for more program info or to register, call litton at 251- 981-6028. Mac Mcaleer, the main sponsor and Gumbo Key founder, said close to 1,000 people have already sent facebook rsvP responses for the event. “i don’t know how that translates into the number of boats. but i will say it is looking very strong. it’s going to be a powerful year,’’ Mcaleer said. event hours are noon until 5 p.m., and Wes loper, adam Holt and roddie romero will all lead their bands from the barge stage. Mcaleer and other Gumbo Key sponsors will take care of everything else. there will be two jon-boats stationed in front of the stage to collect trash. organizers will have 1,000 garbage bags ready for anybody needing one. “We’re really pushing the impor- tance of cleaning up after ourselves and making sure we are careful around the bird sanctuaries,’’ Mcaleer said. “We need to make sure we protect these islands. it’s one of our tag lines. ‘don’t leave a trace.’’’ Mcaleer has posted an aerial photo showing protected sea grass beds that boaters should avoid on the Gumbo Key website and facebook page. Police will be onhand to steer boats away from protected and sensitive areas. Mcaleer said, most of all, Gumbo Key is about family fun, which is his reason for starting and shutting the event down relatively early. “at the end of the day, it’s about having fun,’’ he said. “let’s have some fun.’’ Adam Holt Band - Noon adam Holt’s self described sound is new southern rock. With his traditional stage stance being a rock three piece, reminiscent of cream and Hendrix, Holt adds another variable to the equation; the powerful and convincing vocals of wife Jillian Holt. Holt has played with a non-stop rock-a-holic attitude throughout the southern u.s., from major music festivals to hole-in-the- wall juke joints for the past 20 years, sharing the stage with legends and locals. Wes Loper Band - 1:45 p.m. With well over 1,000 live performances, Mobile native Wes loper (pictured below) knows how to entertain a crowd. PERDIDO BEACH RESORT HOSTS STUDENTS FROM WENONAH HIGH SCHOOL: Perdido beach resort recently hosted a group of students (pictured) from birmingham’s Wenonah High school. the students were all graduating seniors from the academy of Hospitality and tourism through the academies of birmingham. academies of birmingham is an innovative approach to education that offers students a chance to gain practical exposure to industries and careers during their high school years. “it was through our association with the alabama restaurant and Hospitality alliance (arHa) that we were able to coordinate this trip,” said Penny Groux, director of human resources and public relations for the resort. “We felt honored to be able to do this for the students and look forward to a long relationship with Wenonah High school going forward. these students truly brought a renewed energy to everyone they met.” While visiting the hotel the students took property tours, spent time in all major functional operational areas, listened to presentations by each department manager and enjoyed a pizza party and volleyball on the beach. they also visited tacky Jacks in orange beach for dinner on friday night thanks to susan sizemore, director of marketing for tacky Jacks. “our stay at the Perdido beach resort was awesome,’’ said angela evans, a senior in the academy of Hospitality and tourism at Wenonah High. “the employees were so nice and ready to serve with pleasure. if i ever get a chance i will definitely be going back to the Perdido beach resort and orange beach. this is what we’ve been learning about and it was a real experience to see hospitality in action.” ad. info: 251-968-5683 or 850-492-5221 • sHare your coMMunity neWs • email: [email protected] • • the Mullet Wrapper • June 10-24, 2015 • Page 19 Page 20 • the Mullet Wrapper • June 10-24, 2015 • ad. info: 251-968-5683 or 850-492-5221 • sHare your coMMunity neWs• e-Mail: [email protected] ad. info: 251-968-5683 or 850-492-5221 • sHare your coMMunity neWs • email: [email protected] • • the Mullet Wrapper • June 10-24, 2015 • Page 21 Page 22 • the Mullet Wrapper • June 10-24, 2015 • ad. info: 251-968-5683 or 850-492-5221 • sHare your coMMunity neWs• e-Mail: [email protected] WHAT’S HAPPENING WED, JUNE 10 Four Unplugged brings its own party to Flora-Bama June 11-13 four unplugged now has more than four members and is very much plugged in, but the band, which returns to Perdido Key’s flora-bama for multiple sets beginning at 10 p.m. June 11-13, it all started with a chance vacation stop at the ‘bama by founding members ricky and Jan Windhorst. as the couple spent the day watching George ridder, lonnie ferguson and the diving ducks, they were inspired to form a band of their own. the band took its name from its original line-up of four all-acoustic musicians during the heyday of Mtv unplugged. but after the first two years, all that changed. crowds got larger. bass and drums were added. then sax. eventually the band turned into the musical party machine it is today. the band consists of louisiana Music Hall of fame members ricky and Jan Windhorst on vocals and keyboards, respectively (Jan also sings). randy bidleman on drums, Kenny schneider on guitars and vocals, Jimmy belew on saxophone and craig courtney on bass guitar and vocals. sound engineer tony corley brings it all together. Windhorst is excited about arriving a day early to perform a special acoustic reunion show in the flora-bama main room on June 11 at 10 p.m. old bandmates rick samson and dave lemoine will join rick and Jan on stage, other surprise guests are also expected to sit in. “We’re calling it the reunion of four unplugged unplugged,’’ ricky said. “this promises to be a special beginning to an already amazing weekend.’’ the band is ready to get back to the flora~bama after missing last year due to scheduling conflicts, and they will arrive with their own entourage, affectionately known as the fourheads. even ‘bama regulars agree that the notoriously wild and crazy flora-bama turns it up a notch when the fourheads roll into town. the band’s weekend trips to the ‘bama are so popular in louisiana that a local radio station found sponsors to promote a vacation give-away promoting the beach weekend. the tag line on the commercial: “last one out of st. tammany Parish, please turn off the lights.” the band is not afraid to tackle any and all genres of music, and with a song list of several hundred songs, they have been known to play two separate four hour shows without repeating a song. “our local fans see us all the time. so we keep adding to and changing the set lists. We’ve worked up a ton of new songs and plan on bringing back favorites from the bands almost 20 year history. all i know is i can’t wait.” and why it that, ricky? “it’s such a special place to play,’’ he said. “i know everyone says that, i’ve seen interviews with Kenny chesney and other artists who say the same thing. it’s hard to explain, but it really is a special place for all types of music. i think it’s a blend of the vibe, the crowd, the history and the venue. Party music, the beach and the flora-bama, it just doesn’t get any better.” the charm of the flora~bama even inspired one of four unplugged’s original songs, “flora~bama time.” lines like, “oyster shells, funky smells, a slice of heaven and a pinch of hell, that’s flora~bama down on the line” pretty much sum up the band’s experiences at the lounge on the line over the years. • Summertide Theatre presents: Ring of Fire: 8 p.m.; south baldwin community theatre; Gulf shores, 251-968-6721. • Spectra Light Show: aqua-8:30; tribute to amphitheater-9; night at the Movies9:30; the Wharf, orange beach. • Kid’s Night at The Wharf: 6-10 p.m.; face painting, bouncy houses; next to ferris Wheel, the Wharf, orange beach. • Family Karaoke: 6; the Hot spot Music & Grub, the Wharf, orange beach. • Neil Dover Band: 8: Moe’s bbQ, daphne. • Scott Koehn: 6; Pleasure island tiki bar, sportsman Marina, orange beach. • Open Mic W. AMBASSADORS DEDICATE TIME, PASSION TO BEACH TOURISM BUREAU: Gulf shores & orange beach tourism recently celebrated an exceptional group of advocates for the alabama Gulf coast – its volunteer ambassadors – at the tourism bureau’s annual ambassador luncheon at craft farms. from greeting guests on the front lines in the welcome centers to prepping welcome bags for sports events and corporate meetings, the ambassadors volunteer countless hours to promote alabama’s beaches. the organization recognized two distinguished individuals at this year’s luncheon – anne dougherty as ambassador of the year and linda flack for her retirement in May 2015 after 25 years of service to the convention and visitors bureau (cvb). originally from Minnesota, dougherty and her husband frank spent five winters on alabama’s beaches in the early 2000s and decided to make Gulf shores home in 2006. dougherty has proudly served as an ambassador since 2008 and says she is lucky to live in such a beautiful place with an easy pace of life. “i’m thrilled to receive this award because all of these people work so hard,” dougherty says. “being an ambassador has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people who are warm and friendly. i’ve enjoyed every minute of it!” flack marked 25 years as a vacation specialist for the cvb in early 2015, and is transitioning to retirement, or “extended vacation” as she calls it, from her “dream job.” according to Kim chapman, director of hospitality and information for the tourism bureau, the ambassador program is vital to the cvb, and she encourages locals to volunteer. anyone 18 or older is welcome to apply to become a Gulf shores & orange beach tourism ambassador. contact susan brush at [email protected] or 251-968-9325 for more details. Malone noted that 2014 marked the fourth consecutive tourism year for Gulf shores and orange beach. “in 2014, baldwin county welcomed 5.7 million people to the area – our invited guests – who spent $3.5 billion in travel-related expenditures,” said Malone, who made the announcement at the Gulf shores & orange beach tourism summit at erie Meyer civic center. Keynote speaker Mack collier, social media strategist and author of “think like a rockstar,” compared brands and destinations to rockstars, inspiring local leaders to develop brand advocates in loyal customers. He explained that stars such as taylor swift interact with fans, empowering fan bases rather than simply showcasing themselves. “rockstars act on user-generated content, which is trustworthy,” collier explained. “fans create trustworthy content and have more passion for that brand. fans have the ability to change opinions.” the social guru emphasized the importance of saying “thank you” to loyal customers when they promote your brand on social media. “When cultivating advocates, you cultivate sales and revenues,” he said. following the keynote, Joanie flynn, vice president of marketing for Gsobt, informed industry partners about the benefits of engaging with the convention and visitors bureau. lee sentell, director of the alabama tourism department, introduced bill dinan of luckie & co, the state’s tourism advertising partner. dinan explained the significance of the onalabama road trips campaign and 2015’s year of alabama bbQ. “the alabama road trips campaign has been overwhelmingly successful and inclusive to deliver a promise of genuine southern hospitality,” dinan said.
