THE WEEK THAT WAS...
Father-son duo died in
wall collapse
On March 29, a 10-year-old son
and his 45-year-old father died
when a compound wall of an under
construction wall collapsed on
them at Dahisar.
The wall of the SRA building at
SN Dube Road collapsed on the
duo at around 7:45am when they
were asleep. The ambulance,
rescue van and fire engine rushed
to their rescue. The two were dead
before they could be taken to the
hospital. The other family
members, the man's wife and his
three daughters escaped unhurt.
The locals said that the incident
took place due to the unnecessary
construction material dumped near
the compound wall.
Man arrested for raping
girl child
On March 28, a 42-year-old man
was arrested by the officers of the
Crime Branch for raping a 7-yearold girl in Santacruz.
The accused was on the run since
Thursday, when the incident took
place. The officers had set a trap as
he was supposed to board a train to
Gujarat from Borivali. The victim
lives with her parents in the same
building as the accused.
The man used to visit the girl's
house everyday and molest her, but
later the same day, he raped her.
One held for duping
couple
On March 28, a 48-year-old man
was arrested by the Azad Maidan
police for cheating a woman and
her husband on the pretext of
getting their son a job with a civic
body.
The accused, Vinod Waghela
works in the BMC and had gone to
the victim's residence in
November. He promised them to
get their son a job in the BMC as
he was struggling to get a proper
job and told them to pay him Rs.
1.5 lakh. After the parents paid
Vinod a sum of Rs 12,000, he gave
their son a BMC form to fill. On
receiving the entire amount, he
said that their son would get a
joining letter via courier in a few
days. When the complainants did
not receive a letter, they called
Vinod but his phone was off. It
was then that they realized that
they had been cheated.
Fake cops attempt
abducting two friends
On March 28, a man and woman
were abducted by two men who
faked as policemen near Peddar
Road, but they failed to do so as
the man shouted for help and
alerted the locals and the police.
One of the accused, Salim Irshad
Khan has been arrested. The 22year old and his colleague were
riding towards Marine Drive at
around 2am when the incident took
place. The two fake cops stopped
the couple and asked the man for
his license. The man refused to
show produce it until he verified
their IDs. On hearing this, they
slapped the man, took his license
forcibly and compelled the couple
to accompany them to the police
station.

BMC clears encroachment only for a day for Chief

LOKHANDWALA: It's been months
since the footpath leading to
Lokhandwala Complex, near the
CSIR - National Institute of
Oceanography has been encroached
upon by beggars, bullock carts and a
lot of filth. Adding to this has been
the footpath's broken paver blocks,
rendering it totally useless for
pedestrians. However, in a shocking
move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC) cleared the area
off encroachments on March 24, but
only for a day. This was primarily to
get a clean chit from the Chief
Ministers office.
More than a month back the
Mumbai Messenger had reported the
problem to which the Assistant
Commissioner of the BMC, Parag R
Masurkar had no reply. Many activists
have also tried to remove the
beggars from the stretch, but the
efforts have been futile.
Finally, on March 24, the Mumbai
Messenger team spotted Masurkar
standing at the stretch, getting the
footpath cleared off all the
encroachment and filth. On
questioning his reason for delayed
action, he said, “Everyone was
having a problem with the condition
of the footpath, so we have finally
started work on it.” But the truth is
that the footpath had been cleared
only because the honorary Chief
Minister Devindra Fadnavis was
scheduled to visit the nearby
institute for its inauguration, dated
March 26. In other words, the BMC
took action to earn good points from
the Chief Minister's office.
The beggars who encroached
upon the footpath were asked to
leave the place immediately, only for
a day. A beggar occupying at the
footpath since few months said,
River Ganga is worshiped as a symbol of purity whereas it is
ironically one of the most polluted rivers in India.
Innumerable Hindus bathe in the river to wash away their sins and free
themselves from the cycle of death and rebirth. People consider it Holy
and worship it.
At the same time, ironically, tonnes of industrial and human waste are
thrown into the river, and also many dead bodies are cremated there.

“They came last night and asked us
to move from here for just one night.
So we had to sleep near the garbage.
Now we are back today and they are
not telling us anything.”
A pedestrian said, “If this is the
way our authorities are working,
then I request our Chief Minister to
keep visiting the area so that we can
live in better conditions.”
A local resident Ragini Shah
expressed, “It was clear that the area
was a nuisance to all pedestrians. In
fact, the BMC was totally aware of it.
Then why was the work not being
done? They started work on the
footpath for a person who is not even
going to use it! Also, the footpath has
been cleared only until the area that
would be visible to the CM during his
visit. A little ahead, the condition is
disgusting and untouched. It is a
humble request to our chief minister
to keep visiting the area, so that the
BMC will work.”

Convener Darshan Aurora and Radheysham Falod along with the Honorary

Residents create mural for loving stray dog who had been killed by a
speeding vehicle; taxi stand blocks it from being seen
Kritika Sharma
LOKHANDWALA: Residents of
Lokhandwala recently created a
heart-warming tribute for a stray dog
that was killed by a speeding car. A
message has been painted on a wall
in the second lane of Lokhandwala
Complex, along with a large image of
the dog. The message reads: If love
could have saved you, you could
have lived forever. Save our strays.
Drive responsibly. Residents have
created the mural for every passing
vehicle to see, so that strays are safe
from speedsters. However, these
efforts have been rendered useless
due to a taxi stand at the spot that
covers the mural. The taxi drivers
refused to move even when our
correspondent politely requested
them to do so, until they got a

passenger.
The stray dog, Moti used to guard

Lokhandwala. Neighbours always
took care of him and saw to it that he
was bathed and vaccinated regularly.
He was not a stray dog for any of the
society members. He lived in the area
since five years until the unfortunate
incident. Moti was found dead a few
days back with tyre marks all over his
body. The society members
cremated him on the Back Road, and
made offerings of flowers and his
favourite chew sticks on his tomb.
The artists had drawn the outline of
mural and the children of nearby
buildings filled in the colours. Around
seven children worked eight hours to
finish the painting of the brown dog,
with his tongue hanging out.
Passersby in the second lane stopped
to ask what it was, and once they
heard of the tragedy, they picked up
the brush as well.

said, “People think that they can

For every person there, the mural
can be a great inspiration and
reminder to drive cautiously and to
value life. However, the taxi drivers
have certainly made the effort nonworthy.

After making negligent statement to molestation
victim, Police Sub Inspector Mangesh Rane
continues to report to work
Shrutika Sukhi
OSHIWARA: A 27-year- old woman
was more than a fortnight ago
molested by three men at Bangur
Nagar area, near Mega Mall. The
woman was travelling in an auto
rickshaw at 1:25am on March 16
when she saw a group of men
thrashing a few youngsters.
When she stopped and asked a
few onlookers about the incident, she
was pushed inside a car and was
touched inappropriately. She dialled
the number of the police control room
and narrated the incident, after which
the police arrived. The molesters were
taken to Oshiwara police station but
they escaped since no action was
taken against them by Police Sub
Inspector Mangesh Rane.
At the Oshiwara police station,
Rane did not file the woman's FIR
since he claimed that being touched
inappropriately was not a sexual
assault or crime and told the victim
that the case did not fall in his
jurisdiction. He also directed her to file
the case in another police station. She
then went to Bangur Nagar Police
station where her case was filed under
various sections. After verifying the
area where the incident took place,
the case was transferred to Oshiwara
police station. One of the molesters,
Sagar Singh, has a number of
extortion cases pending against him.
It has been almost three weeks to
this incident, but no action has been
taken against Rane yet. The Senior
Police Inspector, Oshiwara, Subhash
Vele said, “Rane is still on duty and
enquiry in the case is on. If he is at
fault, action will be taken against him.”
SHASTRI NAGAR: The
encroachment and filth problems in
Shastri Nagar, Laxmi Industrial
Estate and its surrounding areas are
something that Mumbai Messenger
has taken up repeatedly.
The beautifully constructed
buildings and complexes have their
ramps landing directly on the
pedestrian paths, making people
vulnerable to being hurt. Also, the
restaurants that are built under every
residential building have an
extended shed, the supports of which
make walking difficult for everyone.
Even the delivery bikes of such
restaurants are parked on the streets,
which barely leave any space for
people to walk on.
Balraj, resident of a nearby
society said, “We are not allowed to
walk on the footpaths because of
these annoying encroachments. This
is a huge recurring issue.”
The problem of sewage is a major
concern and is causing unhygienic
living conditions. Open storm water
drains are being used as public
urinals, which makes the place very
stinky. An open garbage bin at the
Laxmi Industrial estate makes this
area look dirty and is a big reason
that causes huge mosquito menace.
Local corporator Jyotsana Dighe
and Parag R Masurkar Ward Officer
of the BMC have been notified about
the issue around two months back.
While Dighe said that she is planning
to beautify the place, the ward officer
said he would take required action.
However, none of them kept their
words and situation is still the same
in both the areas.
Masurkar said, “I would have
sorted the issues earlier, but I am not
getting proper Police protection.
Also, due to children's exams we
were not allowed to carry out any
such work. But I will surely look into
the matter very soon.”

It's a DISASTER not
a Development Plan
– Sanjay Nirupam
The Mumbai Congress President
Sanjay Nirupam recently called for
an Open Session at Rajiv Gandhi
Bhavan to discuss the diverse pros
and cons of the Mumbai
Development Plan 2034. This
session was addressed by Sanjay
Nirupam, renowned Actress and
Social Activist Shabna Azmi, ExParliament MP Priya Dutt and many
leading architects. They all
demanded more emphasis on
lifestyle of Mumbaikar's and showed
their disagreement on the DP.
“The Mumbai Corporation has
prepared the Development Plan and
it is not at all in favour of the city's
development, and in the near
future, we are going to oppose the
DP,” said Nirupam. “Though Shiv
Sena is the ruling party and their
discomfort against the DP is fake, I
fe e l t h e y a re fo o l i n g t h e
Mumbaikars,” said Nirupam.
“The Development Plan has to consider the daily needs
of the citizens. In routine life common people face many
challenges, and to develop and finalise the DP we should
involve the common people and consider their views about
the same. The Development Plan prepared by the
Municipal Corporation is very technical and it is beyond the
understanding of the common man. So I feel we should
summarize the DP in simple language and question the
common people for their views,” said Social Activist
Shabana Azmi.
“The needs of the common man should be considered
while drafting the Development Plan - this is the main
thought behind it, but the current DP is more in favour of
builders and it is somewhere harmful for common man,”
alleges Ex MP Priya Dutt.
“The Development Plan is not only meant for the
beautification of the city but the aim behind it is to have an
affordable lifestyle, healthcare services and education,” said
renowned Architect P.K. Das.
All participants in the Open Session expressed
disagreement with the Development Plan and suggested to
revise it, considering the basic and important need of the
common man. Nirupam said, “We are planning an
aggressive demonstration against the Development Plan in
the near future.”

ANDHERI: A road that can be easily
accessed by vehicles near Andheri
West station has now turned into a
hawker's hotspot and a place full with
unauthorized construction. The road
has its one end on the opposite of
Navrang Cinema lane on SV Road,
while the other connects to Andheri
station towards platform number 1.
It is just near the local ward office
of the Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC) and the shortest
way for people coming from
Jogeshwari. Until work on the last
stretch of Metro began, auto
rickshaws and cars used this road but
then it was closed for vehicles and
soon street vendors filled it. Not just
the hawkers, but stall owners too
have extended their shops illegally at
the spot.
Even the shopkeepers of the area
feel that the hawkers are a big
nuisance. The owner of a jewellery
shop said, “Our customers just cannot
enter this lane because there is no
space for vehicles. One has to park
the car far away and no one likes it.”
Another shopkeeper says, “We are the
ones who pay property tax and these
hawkers who sit here for free are
benefited more than us.”
Few authorities have been working
to clear the encroachments and open
the stretch for motorists so that traffic
can be reduced.

International Cricket Tournament
was organised on March 25, 26,

namely Vaibhav Gupta, Prakhar

respectively. The idea behind this
initiative was to teach the
students values in a fun way,

through the sport they like.
The event 'The Right Pitch' was held on the grounds of Hansraj Morarji
Public School and was sponsored by Rotary Club and Rahee Foundation. The
Rotary Club financed a major amount towards the logistics of the tournament
inclusive of the ground, match apparatus, and give-aways for students. The
Rotary Club also got cricket uniforms printed for the students. The Rahee
Foundation provided coaches for all participating schools and trained them
according to the curriculum. The students were being trained since
November.
Almost 30 Teach for India schools participated and there were around 350
children. The students were divided into three categories: Standard 4th and
5th, Standard 6th and 7th and Standard 8th.
The students played a match of five overs and there was a winning team
from all categories. The winners were- from 4th and 5th Standard (Elia
Sarwat High School, Malwani); from 6th and 7th Standard (Gumpha Road,
Jogeshwari); and from 8th Standard (Divine Child High School, Goregaon).
They even had a fair play award wherein the team with the best behaviour on
field, who doesn't use foul language and respects the umpire's decision was
given a prize.
Teach For India usually organises annual days, picnics and various other
events for their students every year, but this time they wanted to do something
different so they came up with this initiative in 2014. Prakhar Misra, one of
the organisers said, “We wanted to give our children the values in life through
this sport. The idea behind this was to provide our children with the right
amount of exposure coupled with academic achievement and to help them
build sustained values and mindsets.
About Teach for India
Teach To Lead was formally established in 2008. Teach To Lead is a notfor-profit organization whose mission is to create a movement of leaders who
will work to eliminate educational inequity in the country. Teach For India, a
project of Teach To Lead, is a nationwide movement of outstanding college

Section 66A:

People gain liberty
Pradnya Mandhare has been praised by everyone for taking on a man who
molested her, and dragging him by his hair to the police – while dozens of
bystanders did nothing to help. She was travelling home when she was
approached by the obviously drunken man. Such repeated incidents are a
reminder of how thick skinned and insensitive the society has become.
Here is what a few residents had to say:
PHOTOS/DIKSHA
People are stupid and
scared. They want others to
help them when they are in
need but they don't want to
help others when the need
arises.
Gaurav Sharma, 20
Today, no one cares about
anyone. They would never
give a helping hand.
Aishwarya Suman, 18
I think people are scared of
the system, so they don't
even help. If they start
helping it will become a
better place to live in.
Ammar Imam, 19
People nowadays are least
bothered about others.
They just care about
themselves.

to get into legal
hassles.
Saniya Khan, 19
Hamza Shaikh, 19
There should be more RPF
officers on the stations. The
benches, which are made for
them are always empty or
common people are seen
sitting on it. But rarely any
officer is on duty.
Shreyansh Upadhyay, 22
It is a shame that people
have become so insensitive
and selfish. We should start
thinking about others and
show humanity during such
incidents.
In Mumbai, such things keep
happening. I have observed
many times that no one
helps any person. If it were
in a small town, people
would have helped.
Yogita Mahindra, 19
One out of 100 people help
others. Everyone around is
just so selfish that they
hardly care about anything
happening near them.
Swapnali, 22
Anil Gaikwad, 34
I have helped people quite a
few times and I think that
people should help others for
the sake of humanity.
Shri Gaikwad, 32
One should never expect
anything from strangers in
this city. People love
watching drama. So if
someone is being harassed,
people will just sit back and
watch.
Dinesh Kumar, 48
People never help because
they are all so busy in their
own lives. Everyone is in a
rush for their own things, so
when such cases take place,
they simply ignore.
I think it's not just about
harassment, but people have
become insensitive towards
many issues around them.
Be it an accident or
harassment, people behave
in the same manner.
Isha, 18
No not insensitive, perhaps
they have become a little
more concerned about
themselves. People don't
interfere because while
helping, one might get into a
problem himself.
Bimal Ekka, 43
People don't want to
interfere - it is someone
else's matter. And the major
reason behind this is that
people have forgotten their
social responsibilities.
They ignore because most of
the times while helping
someone, they themselves
get into a trap. when one
goes to the police station,
one gets caught in legal
matters. So there are a lot of
deterrents. Kunal, 20

“This move gives more liberty to the
people to express themselves; but this should
be done in limits, as far as there is no
obscenity or abusive language being used”
– Ex MLA Krishna Hegde
Shrutika Sukhi
It was a relief to the people of India and
justice was done to the fundamental right of
'freedom of speech,' when the Supreme
Court (SC) struck down Section 66A of the
Information Technology Act, which gives
the government the power to arrest a person
for posting alleged "offensive" content
online.
The law:
66A- Punishment for sending offensive
messages through communication services,
etc.
-Any person who sends, by means of a
computer resource or a communication
device,(a) Any information that is grossly
offensive or has menacing character; or
(b) Any information which he knows to
be false, but for the purpose of causing
annoyance, inconvenience, danger,
obstruction, insult, injury, criminal
intimidation, enmity, hatred or ill will,
persistently by making use of such
computer resource or a communication
device; or
(c) Any electronic mail or electronic mail
message for the purpose of causing
annoyance or inconvenience or to deceive
or to mislead the addressee or recipient
about the origin of such messages.
Krishna Hegde, Ex-MLA said, “This is a
good move. People can express their
thoughts more freely now. In some cases,
warrants were issued against people in the
past. This move gives more liberty to the
people to express themselves; but this
should be done in limits, as far as there is no
obscenity or abusive language being used.
Many a times on Twitter and Facebook,
people use abusive language for no reason
at all.”
In the last four years, it has been noticed
that the Section has been misused by the
government and various authorities and the
investigations were conducted in a careless
manner. When the Section was introduced,
it tried to monitor the discussion on various
social media platforms and like Facebook
and Twitter. The SC said that there is
something called as 'discussion' and
something called 'incitement.' So there has
to be a line drawn, where it has to be seen if
any discussion leads to any public disorder.
Only then, there can be a restriction to
freedom of speech - spoken, written or on
the Internet
The SC also said that the constitution
only permits some kind of restriction on
freedom of speech if it goes against public
order. But the Section 66A does not pass the
muster of the public order and hence it is
taken down and declared unconstitutional.
The SC will also will also decide the
validity of several other laws that gives the
authorities, the power to take down pages
on the Internet.
Former Information Broadcast Minister
Manish Tewari said, “The SC has done the
right thing by striking down Section 66A. It
had put too much power in the hands of law
enforcement authorities to persecute and
hound people. So therefore by striking
down the Section, the court has done the
appropriate thing.”
The youth, in general, spend a lot of time
on social media sites. They have been
engaging in liking and sharing various posts
by not knowing the consequences of their
actions. This is why many innocent people
fell prey to the charges of the government in
the past. Sushant Singh a local resident says,
“It was vague and stupid of the government
to even implement the Section 66A. We had
to think before even sharing a post which
we support. I'm glad that the SC has taken
this decision.”
Manisha Parkar, another resident says,
“This is great news. Ever since the decision
has passed, there have been jokes and posts
about it. We have finally got our freedom of
speech back. Now all the politicians who
misused this got a good lesson.”

Subject: - Acumination of rain water in drainage
This is to inform you that the BMC had taken repairing work outside our society. Our
drainages were preciously connected from both sides of the road to main drainage but after
road repairing both outlets of drainage which connects it to the main drain are blocked. Hence,
water and dust gets accumulated in our drainage as construction work is going on the next plot.
Earlier we had informed you to please send some of your staff to inspect the situation of
rain water outlet to main drainage. Once Mrs. Subdha Joshi from the maintenance department
of BMC had come and verified the mistakes done by BMC department but no action was
taken after that. As both the sides of drainage are not having outlet connection, the water gets
blocked. We request you send someone to look at the whole situation so that our drainages can
also be kept clean and dry.
Please look into the matter as soon as possible else we have to take the rout towards higher
authorities.

Basics of resume writing
Applying for an internship
to gain valuable, on-the-job
experience? A good resume
will clearly and effectively
organize and summarize your
accomplishments
persuasively. Here are a few
tips:
* Your resume should
neatly fit on one page. Keep
the font at least 10-point and
the page margins reasonable.
* Choose a format that's
easy to follow and consistent, with headings and organization names in bold.
Remember that most employers will skim.
* Include sections for Education and Relevant Experience along with
additional information like Skills or Certifications.
* Use active verbs and concise, formal language. You don't need full
sentences but you should not use abbreviations or personal pronouns like “I,
me, or we.”
* Each section should list with your most recent experience first and work
backwards.
* Save, review and send electronic resumes as a PDF to guarantee correct
formatting. Print hard copies on quality resume paper to take to an interview.

I want to be the
man of my dreams
– MANISH GOEL
He's been there and done that.
An achiever in the television
industry in the true sense,
Manish Goel has done
everything from acting, to dance
shows, to cookery shows. Read
on for excerpts from the heartto-heart chat that transpired
with Mumbai Messenger's
SHAILI MADAN.
Here she traces his journey,
feelings and dreams...
Sushant Singh Rajput and Dibakar
Banerjee are all set to launch a fashion
line which is inspired by the era Detective
Byomkesh Bakshy is set in.
The film has Sushant Singh Rajput
playing the title character. The director
has made it a point that each and every
nuance of the film has been imbibed into
the 1940's.
Your current projects…
I had taken a sabbatical for some time. I did
this intentionally since I wanted to do
something challenging. I have done everything
possible in the industry. I have always felt that
whatever I do, should be challenging. I had a
producer who left me in the lurch recently. This
happened while we were doing a script
together. We had decided to complete it
together but he backed out after some time.
This hit me hard. But fortunately what was left
with me was a script, story, dialogues, all
written by me. I did not know I could do this by
myself. This was not my primary motive, it all
happened accidentally. I have also started my
event management company called 'Dream Big
Make Big' Entertainment. Through this, we
have made a short film on women, held
corporate events, talent shows, modeling
events and a lot more. Script writing and my
event management company happened by
chance. I have recently started shooting with
Zee for a soap, which I can't disclose right now.
I am playing the lead role in this.
How have you evolved as an actor?
I think one has to take things in a stride. I am
happy with the space I took for myself. All I did
then was to maintain myself as an actor. But
now, I want to be back with a bang and have
already taken steps in that direction…the results
of which will be visible this year. My only first
love and last love is acting.
On your ups and downs…
Until one year back, things were difficult and
slightly stressful. I was in the middle of setting
up my event management company and also
writing my script. The person I trusted just
backed out in script writing. This was a little
hard on me. But I have moved on…big deal.

On how stardom has affected your
children…
My son is 11 years old while my daughter is 6. I
had recently taken my son to Four Bungalows
to show my son where I lived. He was shocked.
They have seen only the best and they don't
know where I started. It is very important to do
a reality check from time to time and imbibe
these values in our children too. Poonam and I
both have managed to keep them very
grounded and am glad this has happened.
On your journey till date…
The very first five years of my career were a
struggle. However, the experience has been
great. I have never mentioned this earlier, but I
started my career as a crowd actor. I just had
to sit in the middle on the audience and clap for
a show. It was only later that I got the role of
being the best friend of an actor. I had to
request the director to give me one dialogue
because I really wanted to act. From there, one
thing just led to the next. It was later when
Ekta Kapoor noticed me and asked me to do a
lead role.
You are also a World Guinness Record
holder…
Yes…this happened with me in the year 2012.
It was the five of us on the show – Salman,
Apoorva Agnihotri, Shilpa Agnihotri, Poonam
and me. What I had to do was without using
both hands, I had to make Poonam wear the
maximum bangles in one minute. And Apoorva
had to do that to Shilpa. We ended the minute
by Apoorva making Shilpa wear 80 bangles,
while I made Poonam wear 81 bangles. It was
such a close finish. This happened on March 26
– my daughter's birthday. On setting this
record, I dedicated the victory to my daughter.
Where do see yourself five years from
now?
I want to be the man of my dreams. I have
maintained a dairy and nobody has access to
what I write in it. I pen everything that I want
to achieve – big and small. Until then, I hope to
tick off as much as I can. People usually call
this their bucket list. For me, these are my
dreams.
Your fitness mantra…
I workout like crazy… I maintain a change in
the pattern so that it does not bore me. I also
jog, cycle, and climb stairs sometimes.
How do you de-stress?
I thinking writing has helped me de-stress. But
my biggest stress busters are my kids. I spend
a lot of time with them. Their innocence wins
my heart and helps me forget anything that is
bothering me.
Your greatest asset….
I am extremely honest and passionate about
whatever I do. I can proudly say that I am a
very good person. I believe in giving my 100
per cent to whatever I am doing. I believe
whatever you do with passion, it is sure to pay
back. Nothing ever goes unnoticed.

Q. I have spots with small
particles all over my back. I use
scrub often but it doesn't help.
What to do?
-Ridhima Duta
Dear Ridhima Duta,
I am sorry but i am unable to
understand your question, u are
saying u having spots with particles
on your back, but i need to actually
see the problem to make any kind of
diagnosis . you can either mail the
clear picture of your problem area or
can come for consultation in the
clinic.
Q. My under arms are becoming
dark day by day? How to make
them fairer? Any product that I
can use?
- Surbhi Shinde
Dear Surbhi Shinde,
Darkening of the underarms can be
because of genetic, friction or
chemical or physical irritants.
I suggest you to reduce your weight
if on a higher side. Do not apply
anything which can cause irritation
on the skin. In our clinic we give a
treatment of Chemical peeling with
tricholro-acetic acid or with glycolic
acid every 15 days for dark
underarms . also we give Medical
treatment for maintenance with
glycolic acid or azelaic acid cream at
night time. so for u I suggest some
moisturizer and some cream with
glycolic acid and medical treatment
of darker underarms from a good
doctor.
Q. My skin easily catches tan,
even sunscreens don't help.
What to do? - Gaurvika Kapoor
Dear Gaurvika kapoor,
Tanning is common in Indian Skin
type(Skin Type IV) because we have
more Melanin in our skin as
compared to people in the west and
exposure to sun stimulates
production of even more Melanin . If
i was your treating doctor i would
have asked you to use a broad
spectrum sunscreen regularly,
throughout the day, on parts
exposed to sun and also some
medical
treatment like chemical
peels. Sunscreen should have both
UVA and UVB coverage and a
minimum SPF of 30. It should be reapplied every 2-3 hours. A skin
lightening cream at night containing
one or more of the following
ingredients like kojic acid , glycolic
acid,, hydoquinone, vitamin c and
liquoric extract etc are available in
various formulations can reduces
tanning.
Q. As the summers are
increasing, my skin is becoming
oilier which makes it look dark.
What to do?
- Smriti Khanna
Dear Smriti Khanna,
You may use a Salicylic acid based
cleanser or face wash for twice daily.
Salicylic acid decreases oil production
and cleanses pores and can keep
your skin fresh and little dry, so it is
therefore helpful in acne and oily skin
conditions.
“The fear of physical
death has left me”
– Tuberculosis survivor
Shaili Madan
March 24 marked World Tuberculosis Day. This day gives us a chance to make
a new beginning, to acknowledge and take action on an infectious disease that
has claimed millions of lives and continues to do so. Here is the story of a
Tuberculosis survivor, Rhea Ghosh, whose story of faith and courage, we bring to
you.
I am 37-years-old and a survivor of TB. Five years back, I discovered I had
Tuberculosis – the deadly disease. This diagnosis was made after a lot of
speculation on the symptoms of my illness. With my overall health, I have always
been very healthy until the time I was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. I rarely had a
cold and suffered from the flu barely a few times in life. Infact, I have always
been energetic and healthy. Then 2010 changed it all.
It all started with mild, flu like symptoms – my doctor said you look “healthy”
and considered it to be the flu. He prescribed regular medicines that hoped to
clear my infection in few days. The medicines failed to do any good. I gradually
began to have fever-like sensation most afternoons, and started coughing with
phlegm but no blood streaks. There seemed to be always phlegm in my lungs
and I couldn't expel everything. My thinking started to become affected, as I was
feeling anxious about my strange condition – from a perfectly healthy individual
to wanting to treat a condition that I was unaware about.
Initially I began to think that eating and sleeping more would help me, but it
did not. With time, I eventually started coughing very hard and expelling bloodstreaked phlegm. I thought it was becoming serious, and at times I felt
extremely weak. There was no marked weight loss yet. With this started a series
of new diagnosis. My physician then prescribed drugs for acute bronchitis and at
the same time, asked me to go through a couple of chest X-rays and phlegm test,
wanting to get rid of any doubt. The test results were out – I was diagnosed with
the deadly disease – something that I couldn't come to terms with. I felt my
world came crashing down on me and was clueless as to how I needed to deal
with it.
My physician then forwarded me to a specialist – who asked me to stay away
from friends and family, eat healthy and cover my mouth at all times, especially
while coughing. Consequently, there were a series of medicines to be taken for
its treatment. I tried to garner strength after seeing my parents breakdown on
knowledge of me having TB. I researched on the Internet to know all about the
disease so that I could fight it head on. Regular and timely medicines were the
keys to effective treatment. Convincing my parents that I would in no time
recover from the deadly disease, I started my course of medicines.
During my 6-month medication, I felt very little improvement but I was told
by my doctor that as early as the 2nd month, the TB bacteria had been
eliminated. I concluded that what I was experiencing was the effect of tissues
injured by the bacteria, and that with a healthy lifestyle change and patience, I'll
probably return to normal. On the 4th or 5th month of medication, I decided to
start walking for exercise. Doing physical exercise and felt wonderful - I didn't
feel the TB symptoms. But at rest, they were there almost all the time. Realizing
this, I tried hard to exercise
as often as I could. The rest
of the 1st year saw little
improvement. I was still
having afternoon "fever,"
and was constantly clearing
my throat.
Halfway between the
2nd and 3rd years, I felt
confident enough to declare
being "98%" free of
Tuberculosis symptoms On
year 3, I felt I hadn't reached a 100% state of healing. About 2 times a month I'll
still have a very mild afternoon fever-like sensation lasting around 1 hour. Two
years back I finally stopped having the afternoon "fevers." I still clear my throat
every now and then, but this I consider normal based on my pre-TB condition. I
have continued regular exercise (running mostly), having at least 7 hours of
sleep/night, and a nutritious but healthy (low fat, etc.) diet. Physically I feel very
good. The biggest gift of my TB experience is that fear of physical death has left
me. It's been replaced by a stronger belief in the afterlife. I actually feel released
of many anxieties and fears after facing death and conquering it.

Goodbye to pains with Yoga
Santosh Vallury
Low back and neck pain affect over 1
billion people worldwide. The World
Health Organization (WHO) names
low back pain as the leading cause of
disability across the globe. If you are
behind a desk for the majority of your
day or into other physically
demanding professions, you need to
be careful of the position and
condition of your spine. You could be
a potential for aching joints and
severe back pain.
Do yourself a big favour, and warm up
with our simple and gentle yoga
exercises. They will not only alleviate
that back pain but also keep you
feeling really good.
Caution: Work within your range of
movement and never push yourself
past your limitations unless you are
being supervised by a real live
teacher! If the pain increases, it is
only too obvious that you are doing
something wrong. Before you begin
any new exercise kindly consult your
local physician to determine what is
best and safe for you.
Virasana modified or The
Forward Lunge:
This is a little known fact but your Hip
flexors, if tight, can cause back pain.
If you sit for the majority of the day,
chances are your hip flexors aren't
getting the amount of movement and
stretching they need. If you're a
runner, hip flexor stretches can help
prevent injuries from running.
How to do it: Begin in a kneeling
position with one knee on the ground
and one leg out in front, bent at a 90degree angle, with front foot flat on
the ground. Slide your body forward
by bending your front knee slightly
(but keeping the knee over the toes)
and pushing forward with your hips.
Do not lean forward or backward
while stretching. Hold for a few
seconds and release. Repeat on the
opposite side.
Bhujangasana or The Cobra
Pose:
How to do it: Lie on the floor with your
palms besides your chest and elbows
upright and facing the ceiling. Push up
from your hands into a slight
backbend and draw the shoulders
down. Turn your gaze upwards and
relieve any tension that may occur in
the face. Remember to keep a steady
flow of breath! This pose helps to
lengthen the spine, open up the chest,
and counteract the damage being
done from hunching.
Supta Vakrasana or The Twist:
How to do it: Keep the knees bent and
drop them to the right as you turn
your head to the left. Switch sides
after three to five breaths. Twists
relieve pressure in the low back and
encourage spinal range of motion.
When done correctly, yoga can be a great way to relieve stress and
pain at the same time.

Loving, accepting and approving oneself is crucial
Everything that is manmade can be

competition.
To try to be like another is to
shrivel our soul. We have come on this
planet to express who we are. We
can't express ourselves completely
until we don't learn to love ourselves
as we are. Self-acceptance and Selfapproval in the now are the keys to
positive changes in every area of our
life. The more we love ourselves, the
more our lives work, our relationships
become more fulfilling, we attract
more money, our health improves and
we begin expressing ourselves in
creative ways. All this starts to happen
without even trying. Love is the
miracle cure. Loving ourselves means
having great respect for ourselves and
a gratitude for the miracles of our
bodies and mind.
“Love” is appreciation to such an
extent that it fills our heart to bursting
and overflowing love. Loving and
approving ourselves creates a space
of safety. Trusting and accepting
ourselves creates organization in our
mind, more loving relationships,
attracts a wonderful job, a new and
better place to live, and even enables
our body weight to normalize. People
who love themselves and their bodies
neither abuse themselves nor others.
Loving yourself means begin with
never criticising ourselves for
anything. Criticism locks us into the
very pattern we are trying to change.
Understanding and being gentle with
ourselves helps us move out of it.
Criticism breaks our soul and does
not let us live a happy and loving life.
Self-acceptance is releasing other
people's opinions. Many of the things
we have chosen to believe about
ourselves are untrue because they are
just others opinions. The way it is
explained in our doctrine: Mata
Parvati took different forms in
different situations. She had a form of
Kali, Durga, Laxmi, Sarawati, and she
had to accept all her forms to be
whole and complete. Rejecting any
form or part of herself, would just
make her incomplete. As we all are
infinite beings and we do have
different parts, we too can't be whole
till we accept ourselves. If someone
can't accept a certain part of yours, it
just means he or she rejects that part
within himself or herself.
Often what we think of things as
“wrong” with us, are the only

expression of our individuality.
Understanding this helps us accept
and love ourselves even more and so
it becomes easy to love others too.
Self-approval helps to understand and
be compassionate toward ourselves.
Not approving of any part is just
another way of keeping ourselves
stuck in the past. Lack of self-worth is
another expression of not loving
yourself. Lack of self-worth is just
believing you are not worthy of
something or you don't deserve
something. Our experiences are just
the outer effects of our inner
thoughts. Feeling worthy allows the
Universe to give you all the good. If
every individual starts to love, accept
and approve themselves than there
will be no blame or hurt. Blaming
others just takes away our powers
and we feel helpless. Taking
responsibility gets our powers back.
When we love ourselves enough, we
don't have the need for others to love
us. They will love us with the
reflection of our love inside. You can
start today by repeating this
affirmation as many times a day: I
approve of myself. This can even be
your walking mantra to evidence the
miracles of life.
Vietnamese Restaurant
review
Recently I was in Ithaca, a beautiful
small town not too far from New York city. I
reviewed a popular Vietnamese eating
place. I noticed, Vietnamese food, is still
not as popular in India as in other parts of
the world. Though few of the Vietnamese
dishes forms part of pan-Asian restaurant
menus, but there are no dedicated
Vietnamese restaurants in Mumbai. The
city being a true melting pot of food and
culture, I thought of sharing this review
with my readers here.
Vietnamese cuisine is claimed to be the
healthiest cuisine in the world. The
minimalistic or no use of oil, plenty of
aromas, flavorful fresh ingredients, quick
or no cooking, are the key mantras of this
cuisine. Meat is used more as a condiment,
and plenty of veggies form its main part.
The Vietnamese chefs consider their
cuisine as the nouvelle cuisine of Asia.
Visited 'Saigon Kitchen' for lunch, a
popular Vietnamese eatery in Ithaca
(rated as one of the top five places to eat).
The place was full to its brim. The six feet
of wintry-snow outside could not prevent
the diners from coming in droves.
We ordered crystal shrimp dumpling, and siracha
wings for appetizers. After the hearty hor-de-vors, we
ordered the famous pho noodle soup, although tried
the shrimp variation instead of the beef.
Pho noodle soup is synonymous with Vietnamese
food. Pho, literally means no two bowls are alike. The
aromatic broth is common to all Pho soups. The Pho
was delightfully flavorful, light and fresh.
The lemongrass chicken was a quick tossed dish,
with a simple flavor working very well. The crystal
dumplings had a moist glutinous wrap, perfect and
succulent shrimp flavored with chives (type of herbs)
as the filling.
Siracha wings was a disappointment though.
There was nothing Vietnamese in this dish. They

With summer taking its toll on us, most men are clueless about what they
need to have in their wardrobe. Here are few must haves that will help men
cruise through comfortably:
Shades : Sunglasses are essential this season, they not only look cool, but
even help the eyes from the harmful UV rays.
Flip Flops : The advantage of wearing these is that its comfortable and very
much in trend. To avoid the sweatiness which one gets in shoes, you can wear
these. Many vibrant colours like green, yellow and blue are mostly chosen.
White shirt/ T-shirt : White can never get out of fashion and wearing them
on blue denims will just add up to the hotness of the season.
Denim shirts: Denim shirts are quite in this season. These shirts just look
like denim but are actually of cotton which won't make you feel hot. If worn
them with shorts will add up to a sporty look.
Half sleeve shirts: You can never go wrong with the short sleeve buttondown, just keep it slim to avoid looking frat boy.
No-show Socks: A must for those low-profile sneakers and boat shoes.
These will help make your feet and shoes less stinky at the end of the day, and
who doesn't want their feet to stink less, right
Chino Shorts :A few pairs of shorts will go a long way toward keeping your
summer vibe looking versatile. Just make sure they don't go below the knee or
are super baggy, because you don't want to end up looking bad.

were simply an adaptation of the American barbecue
wings. We also had general chicken which was very
similar to the Orange chicken which most American
food-courts and Chinese take-aways sell.
But the “Pho, definitely stole the show”.
For a Mumbai-ite like me, not having tasted the
famous Vietnamese dish Pho in the city, the visit to
the small town eating joint, was worth an experience.
It made me think that even small American towns
serve popular global cuisines, but we in Mumbai are
deprived from experiencing what the world is
enjoying regularly.

The influence of music on society can be clearly seen from modern history.
Music helped Thomas Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence. When he
could not figure out the right wording for a certain part, he would play his violin
to help him. The music helped him get the words from his brain onto the paper.
“There are various waves in our body and when we listen to music, these
waves get activated. Various types of music have different effects on our body,”
explains Namrata Dagia, C.Ht and Alternative Healing Therapist. There are seven
chakras in our body - Base, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third eye and
Crown. The chakras have a great impact on our health, lifestyle, thoughts and
emotions. Classical music has a great impact on the chakras of our body, which
are linked to endocrine glands and classical music also has mantras.
Music has rhythm and words. Rhythm creates waves in our brains, leading to
deep relaxation, while words too have their effect. Our brain has two
hemispheres - right and left. Our left brain deals with logical and analytical
reasoning, while the right brain deals with creativity and intuition. Music triggers
both the hemispheres of our brains. Mantras activate our left brain and rhythm,
while the tone activates our right brain. Listening to music makes both the
hemispheres merge.
She says, “Listening to music like Rock, Pop, Jazz etc for 5-10 minutes is not
bad but it should not be heard for more that 15-20 minutes as they have a
negative effect on our mind. In studies on plants and animals exposed to such
music, it was seen that their growth reduced and that they died sooner. On
humans, such music has a similar effect. It aggravates aggression, increases
sexual desire, and there is no emotional harmony. The beats of such music
trigger the aggressive waves in the brains, leading to an imbalance in hormonal
activity. There is also a chance of increase in the rate of alcoholism and drug
addiction.” Music helps at both, the physical and psychological level. The physical
effect is that it lowers the rate of blood pressure and heartbeat. One gets proper
sleep and on an emotional level it reduces anxiety, helps get clarity and positivity
in thoughts.

Tales of Karim Lala
READER'S MESSAGES
Dear Editor
Don to Helen’s Rescue
Khaki Adored Him
Dancing legend Helen's relationship with her
then husband PN Arora was strained. There
were domestic fights every day. After one such
fight, PN Arora disappeared with all her money
and jewellery worth several lakhs those days.
A distressed Helen approached Actor Dilip
Kumar seeking help to get her valuables back.
Dilip Kumar heard her woes and suggested that
only Karim Lala could help her in the matter. As
there were no mobile phones then, Dilip Kumar
tried to contact Karim Lala on his landline no.
but due to some problems could not get
through. Dilip Kumar then wrote a letter for
Karim Lala saying that Helen was a great artist and needed urgent help. Helen
took that letter to Karim Lala's Dongri office. Lala read the letter, and told her
to go home with a promise that her work would be done. A few hours later
when Helen returned home, she found her husband, PN Arora at her doorstep.
He returned all the money and jewellery to Helen and never showed her his
face again.
Helen was so happy and impressed with Karim Lala
that one day during a film party when she found out that
Karim Lala was also there, she instantly ran to him, took
him in her embrace and kissed him. The embarrassment
of Karim Lala at that moment was worth watching. The
man, who had never seen a young woman with crossed
eyes, was being kissed in public by a woman he barely
knew. It was a terrifying moment for Helen when Karim
Lala asked her who she was. Helen then explained to
him how he helped her when she needed him.
Karim Lala used to hate any uniformed policeman
visiting his area. He always felt insulted when cops Baljeet Parmar
entered his locality without informing him. If the cops
ever needed to question and catch a criminal, they
would seek Karim Lala's assistance. Karim Lala had done the same. It
happened several times that Karim Lala caught culprits and handed them over
to the police. He did not like to see a Pathan doing anything wrong. Karim Lala
always felt that the repute of the Pathans should not be tarnished by people who
indulge in wrongdoings. He even used to get the innocents released by offering
bail.
It so happened that a newly posted sub-inspector behaved in a very arrogant
and disrespectful
manner with Karim
Lala when he visited the
area for the first time.
Another day when the
same sub inspector
appeared, Karim Lala
offered him a cup of tea.
Karim Lala then asked
the reason behind subinspector's visit to his
area. The inspector
replied that he saw an
accused entering the
area and was chasing
him. Karim Lala asked
him to show the identity or photograph of the accused and assured him that he
would have him surrender at the police station. Just as the inspector was
leaving, he spotted the accused again and started chasing him. Karim Lala got
angry seeing this. The crook climbed the three storeyed building and jumped
off the terrace to escape from the cop.The inspector jumped after him but lost
his balance. Just when the inspector was about to fall, Karim ran and gave him
his hand to save him. While saving the inspector, Karim himself collapsed.
Even after Karim was very strong, he got hurt but the sub-inspector escaped
unhurt. Once again, Karim Lala was hailed as a hero in the police community.
Karim Lala, in fact attended the wedding of the sub-inspector many years later.
A Slap in the face
During his hay days Karim Lala used
to hold daily Darbars just outside his
office near the children's remand
home, Dongri
which was also
known as 'Bacchon ki jail.' There was
a huge and high wall around the
compound and there used to be big
flash lights atop the wall. Karim Lala
used to sit on a huge wooden cot
surrounded by scores of henchmen
and sympathizers.
One of those days Karim Lala
received a guest from his native
Afghanistan, who stayed at Dongri
for a few days and witnessed Karim
Lala’s influence and power. After a
few days the guest left and Karim
Lala continued with his daily
Darbars.
After a month or so, the local
postman brought in land letter and
handed it over to Karim Lala. The
letter war written in Pashto language
which Karim Lala and few of his
men could read or understand. The
letter was full of praise for Karim
Lala and his Pathan Gang. The writer
Karim Lala had another row with a young
police sub inspector who had been newly
posted at the Dongri police station. Once he
went to Karim Lala's Dongri office and
behaved in an arrogant and ill-mannered way.
Karim Lala had an unusual habit of calling
younger men 'beta'. As usual, Karim Lala
greeted the officer and said “beta you are very
lucky that you are standing in front of me in this
uniform. I respect it a lot otherwise I would
have given you a dose of my choice.” The sub
inspector replied, “You are an aged don but still
you display domineering attitude. “Rassi jal gayi par bal nahi gaya” the officer
remarked sarcastically. He further challenged Karim Lala that he would soon
return without uniform the next day and see what the don could do to him.
The next day, the officer went to Karim Lala's office dressed in civil clothes.
Karim Lala confronted the young officer and gave a hard slap on his left cheek
and then the other one on the right. The don explained, “The first slap was
because you came to my locality in uniform and misbehaved. And the second
one is because you came again despite my warning.” Karim Lala told him that
he had slapped someone after 20-25 years so he should think of how much he
had hurt him.
The officer returned and lodged a complaint with the Zone DCP but before
that Karim Lala had already informed him about the incident and the matter
ended there itself.

Pathway to Progress
The responsibility of progress depends on each
educated and thinking citizen to move out and
educate others
The primary issue that stands like a
villain between us and development is
the population increase that is
happening by the day. We have far too
many mouths to feed, and far to less
resources. There are too many minds
that need to be employed, but too few
opportunities to provide. There are
too many faces to bring a smile to, but
too many tear to wipe first. How
under these circumstances can we be
hopeful for a bright and developed
tomorrow?
Why do I, as well as many others,
consider population explosion as an
impediment to progress? Because it
must be remembered that it is the
populace that makes the nation. It is
the brainpower and manpower that
designs a nations progress. Today, as
a nation, our chief concern is to see
that our exploding population does
not sleep hungry, roofless and
wordless.
T h e re i s u n d o u b t e d l y a n
immediate need to control the
population. Yes, there are a number of
couples who are contributing to
population control by opting for a Nochild-double-income-earning family.
There are certain couples who would
rather adopt and orphan than rather
create one more child in this world.
But this is happening amongst the
literate class of society.
It has always been a challenge for
the Government to implement any
strict measures to control population
in the country. Take for instance the
Emergency during Indira Gandhis
reign. She implemented a strict and
required method to control population
and what was the result? Her
Government toppled over, overnight
and she was put behind bars.
As a matter of fact India has never
been a nation for strict Governments.
The Government body at the helm
has to bend over to suit its peoples
wants in order to capture vote banks
and no Government in power will
want to lose that at any cost. Then
how is one to implement strict and
mandatory measures to control
population?
T h o u g h , a ny G o v e r n m e n t
measures to control population will be
more or less successful amongst the
middle and higher income groups who
have an educational backing and an
awareness toward the impediments
plaguing our route to development.
Thus, prior to implementing any
family planning or rather population
control norms, the Government has to
Batti ke

Karim Lala

recalled his comfortable stay in
Mumbai and heartily thanked Karim
Lala.
Suddenly Karim Lala noticed the
unique way in which the address was
written. It was just two simple lines
which consisted the minimum but
sufficient information locating Karim
Lala. The address read :- Batti ke
neeche,jail ke peeche ,Karim Lala,

the jail wall Karim Lala, Bombay.)
take into account the far reach into
those areas where parenthood
becomes a means for survival. What
am I talking about here? It is that
section of society that gave birth to
babies who will generate their income
through begging and other forms of
child labour.
The Government will do the
needful in drawing up plans to control
population. But who will take the
responsibility to see that the plan is
implemented effectively? Who will
knock on each door and educate this
section of society?
Isn't it something to think about?
We grumble about the ineffectiveness
of the Governments.... but how many
of us are willing to walk out of our
protective surroundings to actually do
something beneficial for our nation.
The responsibility of progress
depends on each educated and
thinking citizen to move out and
educate others...the medicine for an
ailing nation lies with us...
In the last two issues you have
highlighted the haphazard parking
in Oshiwara area. This is not a new
phenomenon and it happens all over
Mumbai. You would have also seen
cars parked in front of small
garages, coffee shops and eateries in
Lokhandwala and Oshiwara area.
This is the result of a nexus between
the Police, BMC and the
commercial establishment.
Traffic rules prohibit parking 20
metres from traffic signals and
curbs, but this rule is grossly
violated. One such example is at the
traffic signal on Link Road
(Tarapore Chowk) where lots of
cars are parked to help roadside
garages and shops. The corner of
road coming from Samarath Temple
going towards Twinkle Shopping,
you will see customers cars parked
in front of Cafe Coffee with valet
parking provided by the shops.
This is the result of what in
Mumbai language is called
"Setting." The police and the BMC
have fixed charges for all such
breach of rules. The money (Hafta)
is collected every month, half
retained by Police Station, Traffic
Area Office and the other half
passed upwards. There is very little
that a citizen can do. Everyone who
has the power to make noise is
either silenced or forced to share a
part of the booty. This will never
end as our political system requires
funds for their survival and
Government servants to prosper.

Dear Editor
I saw your front page article on
Hookah and I was happy to see that
you have covered this issue which
no other paper has. Now all the
Hookah parlours will be scared and
they would wait for a proper order
from the government to run these
parlours. You have even given a
good touch to the story by putting
pictures of some local boys who
have been regular visitors there. It
made the story more authentic.
Keep up the good work. I am
hoping to see some more local and
exclusive news.

Dear Editor
The health and fitness page is so
beneficial for people and its good
that you focus on it. I read your last
issue where you have put an article
on flu and I was happy to read it as
this has been a regular thing in my
house. Everyone in my family is
down with flu. I tried medicines but
nothing worked and I didn't know
about any home remedies that could
be beneficial and effective. Thank
you once again. Its been an eye
opener.

Feng Shui Miracle / Mohan Deep
“I feel my
calling is
theatre and
only theatre”
– Bhavna Pani
Feng Shui for office politics
Politics in the mutual funds and finance related industry is
worse than the games people play in actual politics. Morality
is an alien concept for most and office politics follows the
same principles which are followed in love and war, where
everything is fair. 'The ability to mix poison in an office colleague's drink,
while wishing him long life' describes the sort of codes followed in the cutthroat world of office politics. That thing called a conscience is absent in the
character of the ambition-obsessed people working here.
And it is much worse if a woman is involved. She often fights the gender
discrimination for reaching up and then she has to contend with her own
gender. I saw this when Diana consulted me. Her mail showed how disturbed
she was.
March 27 is World Theatre Day.
To mark this day
Kritika Sharma chats with
actor Bhavna Pani
to explore more
about the world of theatre...
Tell us about your journey into doing theatre...
My story is quite contrary than what it is usually. I first
started doing films and a few commercials after which I
became a theatre actor. I started with some lead roles
in films but then I realized that I was too young and
not prepared to get into films right away. So after doing
over a hundred ads and films, I switched to theatre.
Your turning point in theatre...
In the year 2006, I got an offer for an international
stage musical, which was like a Bollywood show in
Broadway style. I was always keen about dancing
because I started it when I started school so it was as
good as learning alphabets. I have trained in classical
dances such as Katthak and Odissi. It was a risk
because at that time, I was getting many offers for
films and television but then this one was about dance
and that too at an international level. While taking it
up, I did not plan to do it for long, but now it's been 8
years and I am still enjoying it.
What do you prefer - theatre or movies?
I think I am an accidental actor. Movies and
advertisements just happened by chance but I feel my
calling is theatre and only theatre because I find that
very challenging.
Who is your role model in theatre?
Naseeruddin Shah is someone I have always looked up
to and still do. He has created a perfect balance
between films and theatre in his life. Being such a great
actor, he still gives theatre all the respect and
commitment it deserves. I will never be able to match
up to him but I always keep drawing inspiration from
him.
Who has always inspired you as a person?
Quasar Thakur is one person who is like my friend,
brother, guide and everything. He taught me a lot after
I entered theatre. In fact, his theatre has a social
cause. Apart from that, it is my mom who has been a
great inspiration. She is the strongest and the most
moralistic woman I have ever seen in my life.
What according to you are the drawbacks of
theatre in our country?
One thing that is missing in India and is present
overseas is the culture for theatre. I think people there
are ready to spend unlike in India. Like for example, I
am doing four plays at a time but I am actually not
earning any money. In our country, theatre artists are
actually the most financially deprived people because it
is not considered a commercially viable profession. The
theatre industry can be as big as films, but people
really need to spend on it.
How has theatre evolved over the years?
The quality of theatre has improved a lot in our
country. Especially experimental theatre is going
notches above. There is a lot of scope for improvement
in terms of musical theatre.
How does theatre help in evolving a person?
It really keeps a person grounded and also in touch
with his or her skills. While doing theatre, a person gets
an instant feedback about his or her performance. The
results of every play only depend upon the quality of
acting. No other force decides if a play is a hit or flop –
solely acting does.
What do you think about the new generation of
actors joining theatre?
I think the new generation is really very talented and
amazing. One small flaw among them is that they think
theatre is nothing but a ladder to the world of films and
television. But the reality is that one should join theatre
only for the love towards the art.
Vaastu for Women
Women are by nature delicate, at
the same time mentally strong.
Hindus respect women as
Goddess Laxmi and Goddess
Saraswati, the Goddesses of
Wealth and Knowledge
respectively
It is a well-established fact that the
woman is the most important person
to make any house a home. She is the
gracious lady of the house who makes
it a Home. On her shoulders, rest an
array of responsibilities. These include
maintaining a good ambience,
showing hospitality to guests,
worshipping household Gods,
maintaining peace, keeping vicious
elements at bay, reverence to elders
and vigilance against addiction to evil
habits.
A woman plays an important role
in Vaastu Shahstra too.
Whether in a house or in a palace,
maintaining it is a delicate task and an
important duty. However, due to the
influence of the West, women
working for the family have lesser
time to follow so much.
For the uninitiated, Vaastu
Shashtra is the study of directions,
energy and elements. It aims at the
natural flow of energies and is an
ancient practice that has evolved by
learned seers and sagas for the
welfare of mankind. A couple should
avoid the northeast bedroom and use
a Southern Zone bedroom instead.
Sleeping with the head in the South
brings understanding and rejuvenates
the relationship.
It is a known fact that more
women in the world die every year
either during pregnancy or at the time
of childbirth. Vaastu experts believe
that apart from taking the
Gynecologist's advice into
consideration, a few Vaastu tips could
also be followed to bear a healthy
child. Our understanding of color
therapy provides a unique effect. If
you are feeling weak, tired, or ill, try
spending time in the East of your
House. The East is believed to be
ruled by Indra, the God of war and
weather. Hence, Indra has power over
the rising sun, believed to have power
over the Bones, Eye, Heart, Spinal
Cord and Blood Circulation. Meditate
and practice breathing exercises while
sitting in the Northeastern corner of
your house. According to Vaastu, the
Northeast is ruled by 'Easanya',
(Almighty God) thereby indicating
that it is a very important and a
spiritually elevated zone.
Avoid toilet in the North East,
South East (corner) and Centre
(Brahmasthan) of the house which
brings ill health. Put a family
photograph in the southwest direction
for better harmony. Keep Basil Plant
(Tulsi Patta) and Pearls and Crystals in
Northern Direction for prosperity.
Ensure that there are no overhead
beams running through the centre of
the house, or it would lead to a
disturbed mind. Heavy furniture
should not be kept in the middle of the
House, as it is the Brahmasthan and
needs to be kept as empty as possible.
The Color blue has cooling qualities; a
night bulb emanating soft blue light in
the night would be very calming.
However, Violet, Indigo, Purple are
suggested for the walls. Avoid red
color in the bedroom. Paintings of
Dragons, War and other violent
images are a strict no-no. They evoke
tension and feelings of unhappiness.
Avoid cruel pictures.
If you are having trouble sleeping,
try sleeping with your head in the
South Direction to maintain the
natural Polarity of your body and
health of both yourself and your fetus.
Avoid sleeping with your head in the
North Direction during pregnancy;
you should always sleep in a bedroom
in the southern direction. Avoid bigger
widows in southwest and have bigger
windows in Northern Direction for
success if the woman is working. Use
of fragrances in the House is
recommended.
By maintaining the mentioned tips,
a woman can enhance peace, health,
prosperity and self-respect and feel
happier and more powerful mentally
and physically.
"My talent, honesty, efficiency and hard work got me the promotion and I
thought I will have the satisfaction of contributing my mite in taking the
organization further. But the atmosphere changed immediately after my
promotion. I could sense the hostility among colleague who I had considered
buddies. I thought this was a temporary phase and they would later accept my
success with grace.
"To my face, they were all polite and friendly, but some were plotting
against me. An outsider cannot know what I have gone through during the last
six months. Gossip and innuendo spoilt my peace of mind and threatened to
ruin my family life. I could understand the men who were jealous but women
were the worst. Gossip against me started from them. My friendship with a big
name who matters, and who played an important role in my promotion, was
blown up into an affair...."
She was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when she came to my office. I
noticed that the two persons she suspected of being hostile to her - a man and a
woman - were sitting in the Power corner of the office. How would we shift
them? Would they not resist?
We found a way out. Her office had two entrances. One was in use and the
other was closed, with a row of cupboards lined up. I suggested shifting the
cupboards, closing the door which was being used and opening up the other
door for use. She could manage this.
This shifted the Power corner. Unknown to them, her rivals started sitting in
the Helpful Friends Corner.
After the changes
Diana told me later, "It took barely three months to show the effect. Your
painting of the Greedy Dragon of Ambition helped. You had chosen my chair
for the conference room and the direction for me to sit. This time, as I sat there,
I felt a surge of power. In an office meeting, I turned the defamatory mail
against me into a major issue and threatened to bring the police and even an
NGO into the picture. All hell broke loose. Most colleagues supported me. The
two culprits cowered. Without taking names, I warned them that I was treating
the whole episode as 'closed' unless they did any more mischief. Everything
changed thereafter. Feng Shui worked like magic for me."
Diana regained marital harmony too with Feng Shui in her house. "My
husband loves and trusts me. An anonymous e-mail, baseless office gossip and
innuendo could not destroy my marriage," Diana said with a smirk.
Her parting question was, “One dragon you gave me helped me so much,
what if I get all the Nine Dragons?” “You would prosper like Hong Kong did
when their government installed a large mural of Nine Dragon there.” I told
her. It will not surprise me to find her back, asking for the Nine Dragons. She is
very ambition.
People who approach me for similar problems are many. Over the years, I
have seen hostility between the Police Commissioner and the Additional
Police Commissioner, between the Chief Minister and the Home Minister, and
have even seen a Junior Secretary become a power centre at the cost of his
boss! And there has been a Feng Shui explanation every time.
I have started believing that even if you located a peon in the Power centre,
his clout would increase to make him as powerful as the boss of his company.
Inexplicable, but true!

Feng Shui of the Kitchen
To a house, a kitchen is what a stomach is to the body. The kitchen also
represents wealth.
The cooking stove also figures prominently in the money flow of a home. It
should work smoothly so that money can easily enter the home. If the burners
are clogged, business will be plagued with obstructions. It is believed that the
more the burners, the more the money earned. However, you must use all the
burners, otherwise, the family will not prosper.
