Working Bee Thank You
We had a great turn up to the working bee on Sunday so we
accomplished heaps as you may have seen as you came to

Notices that went home:

The School Review is the last part of the 4 year cycle which began with the development of a Strategic Plan in 2011. During the previous School Review we identified areas that we wanted to improve and we used this to develop our current
plan. Each year since then we have broken our goals into steps and these are the
foci in our Annual Implementation Plans which guide us in that year. Our progress has been recorded in our Annual Reports. This year we complete the cycle
with a Self Evaluation and an external review of the 4 years looking at Student
Learning, Student Engagement & Wellbeing and Transition.
Groups within the school are being invited to contribute to our Self Evaluation:
staff, students, parents, School Council. On the 25th May, parents are asked to
come along and give their feedback on the past 4 years and ideas for the next 4
years.
This year’s Annual Report will be available on our website shortly and hard copies
are available at the office.
Next week our Grade 3 & 5 students will be doing the NAPLAN on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday. If your child is in one of those classes please have
them here in plenty of time as rushing can be distressing and if they are calm they
are more able to do their best.
If your child isn’t doing NAPLAN, please show respect by being on time and not
interrupting by coming in late.
ENROLMENTS FOR 2016 ARE OPEN
If you have a child who is eligible for Prep in 2016 and will be coming to school
please follow the link below to get the enrolment form. Alternatively, come to
the School Office and pick up an enrolment form. Fill it out and return to the
school office bringing the birth certificate and immunization records.

Over the first 3 months of the school year, MVPS students have continued to impress by riding, walking and scooting to school.
So far this year, we’ve averaged an Active Travel Rate of 59%. With the mornings remaining very chilly, it takes an amazing
effort to jump out of bed and brave the conditions to get to school on your bike, scooter or by foot. As we head into winter,
hopefully we can continue the great momentum and keep our active travel rate above 50%!

Parent Association:
Collection of IOUs for Mother’s Day Stall
Students with IOUs from yesterday’s Mother’s Day Stall can pay for and collect their gift purchases from Canteen this Wednesday.
Special thanks to Steph, Eva, Claire, Leanne, Lauren, Koula, Angie, Le-Hua, Anna, Pam, Jenja and Iryna for helping run the stall.
The children really enjoyed the chance to purchase something for their Mum or the other special women in their life.

Please note that our annual family Movie Night will now be held on Friday 19th June at the Phoenix Park Community Hall. Kids
get your thinking caps on! What movie would love to see? Each class will be asked to come up with their Top 5 movie choices
later this week.

Learning at Malvern Valley
Sounds like Science!
Did you know that there are sound frequencies the human ear cannot hear? Elephants can
hear much lower tones than us and dolphins can pick up sounds that are higher than our ears
can hear. A week and a half ago, the 1/2 classes had an incursion from Monash University,
all about sounds! The presenter showed us that sounds move through the air like a long
slinky stretching out and contracting and explained that sound is created by vibrations, like
a beat on the skin of a drum. We investigated the difference between noise (being scattered
sound) and musical notes (being patterned sound). Everyone made a pipe flute and observed
how the long straws produced low notes and the short straws produced high notes. It was a
thoroughly informative session and provided us with much to discuss and further explore.

Have a chat with your child about these and come up with some examples for each of the them—a Y chart is a good way
to record your ideas.

The send your examples back to the classroom.
This discussion can be used to build empathy which is an important part in developing the understanding behind being socially responsible . Understanding brings cooperation in putting social
responsibility into action.

Being Active @ Malvern Valley
Sporting School Program
This program is the new program that is replacing the Active After School Sport Program and while there are some differences it
is mostly the same.

The programs are for 5 sessions only and are for 45 minutes which means
the after school programs finish at 4.30pm

Participants have to provide their own fruit and drink as afternoon snack is not included in the program.


each session so that we can divide the participants

Children can be signed out of OSHC into the Sporting School program and then signed back into
OSHC as previously—please inform Kerry if your child is involved in a
sport.
Parents are welcome to stay and be involved and we do need a parent helper for
both Monday and Wednesday after school to do the role and be on hand to help the
coach as required.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO BE ON TIME TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD. If you are late
your child will be booked into OSHC and you will be charged.

Being Creative @ Malvern Valley
Performing Arts Drama Incursion
On Wednesday 29th April, all students from Grades Prep to 6 attended a drama incursion
titled ‘Jack Flash and the Jumping Beanstalk’, presented by Nick, Emma and Zack from the
New Zealand Playhouse. The show was fast paced, humorous and exciting and included
plenty of costume changes, singing and audience interaction.
This was a great opportunity for all students to see a professional production in the lead up
to our own school concert in September as students were able to see dramatic techniques,
processes and conventions that we have focused on in class in action.

Program Update
Throughout the week we had some visitors come and visit our program.
They were all of the animal variety.
Zara’s guinea pig had babies and we were delighted to see the baby guinea pigs.
Tracey has a new addition to her family named Gus and he also came for a visit.

Dads Drinks
This Friday (8th May) is the second Friday of the month which means
that it is time for the dads to get together for a drink, pizza or fish and
chips at the Chadstone Bowls Club on Chadstone Rd. It is a very relaxed atmosphere and a good laugh is had by all so come along on Friday after 6.00pm. We will also have the footy on the big screen.

We need 3 Volunteers for each morning shift in canteen and there are plenty of spots left on the roster so

So Mrs Fehlberg wins the $20! Right? Wrong. Anyone who knows anything about footy tipping knows Mrs Fehlberg doesn't do
footy tipping. I just threw that in there for a giggle. So Mr Sheffield wins the $20! Right? Well, not exactly. See, a curious thing
happened. Mr Sheffield and Mrs Long both tipped 8 and both had EXACTLY THE SAME MARGIN (81). Michael Jamieson as
I live and breathe, what are the chances!?! What does that mean? It means the round prize is a tie and Mr Sheffield and Mrs
Long win $10 each. Congrats to both, but I recommend they don't spend their prizes all at once.
