Traffic Safety around the Precinct:
Safety around our school and the precinct is paramount and it is the responsibility
of everyone who is using this area to observe the road/traffic rules and to be a
responsible pedestrian.
Here are some reminders:

Discuss safety with your children so they know the importance of being
vigilant while moving around cars, and get them into the habit of making
eye contact with drivers.

When using Phoenix Park Library Car Park for drop off or pick up,

Only park in the bays,

Those who have a Disabled Parking Permit may use the
designated bays

Don’t stop or wait on the roads as this congests the car park and
this in turn makes it unsafe for pedestrians ...our children

Use the paths where ever possible to walk to and from cars

If you need to walk on the road, have young children walk with you,
as you are taller and more visible.

If parking on the roads around the school/precinct observe the parking restrictions, insist that the children get out on the kerbside of the car and
cross the road at the designated crossings.

If riding or scooting, children are to get off at the kerb (including at the
crossings )so they can focus their attention on what is happening on the
road. It is very important for each child to do their own checking even
when an adult is present.

Observe the 40 kph around the school/precinct at all times
Congratulations to the grade 3 & 5 students who completed NAPLAN last week.
NAPLAN is a snap shot in time in terms of Literacy and Numeracy and we have to
wait until September to get those results. However your positive attitude, focus
on the tasks that you were asked to do and the effort that you put into them were
visible over the week and you are to be commended for them.
EDUCATION WEEK: Come along Mums and Dads and try your hand at a bit
of maths tomorrow morning between 8-9am.

School Council News: School Partnerships; Facilities; Promotions; Education
The Parent School Partnership team met again last week.
In the first year of the team, they have focused on

The Parent Survey which has been a valuable tool for finding parents for specific tasks. From the survey we
have had parents involved in class programs including some science sessions , event organisation—the 60th
celebrations. The survey is currently being updated to reflect this year so parents will be able to log on and
enter their information very soon.

Communication regarding getting information to parents: the decision was made to use the Newsletter/
notices, Website & Skoolbag
Now the focus is on communication from parents and communication around the individual
Learning at Malvern Valley
This term, the Prep Inquiry unit, In Motion, investigates how forces affect the movement of
objects. We have had lots of fun investigating forces including push and pull, gravity, friction, tension and torque through a variety of moving toys. We have even made some of our
very own toys!
On the 29th of April, we had an incursion at school to introduce us to what forces are and
how they make things move and stop. Lydia from Monash University taught us a great song
to help us remember the different forces and let us explore how forces work by using toys
including tennis balls, ping pong balls, toy cars, yo-yos and marbles. We had so much fun!
Maths Club
Our Mathletes are having a great time on a Tuesday morning delving into mathematical problems. It is
great to see the original members still coming each week and to see the new members who are coming
along to join in the fun.
Jumping Frogs
A frog jumped on several stones on his way to the pond. He did not land on the same stone twice.
The product of all of the stones that he hopped on was 19,635. On which stones did he jump?

Being Active @ Malvern Valley
Sporting Schools Program:
Monday lunchtime: A group of grade 4-6 students head over to Phoenix Park Hall for an hour of Table Tennis. They have been working in pairs and in large groups with the 3
coaches. So far they have been focusing on serving and returning
forehand and back hand. It has been great fun and Paul the coach

NAPLAN:
I would like to commend all the Grade 5’s for showing persistence and hard work during NAPLAN
Week! Mr. Fenton and I saw them coming to school every day with a positive attitude and willingness
to just have a go!
Grade 6 Leadership Passion Clubs:
While the Grade 5’s were diligently planning for and working on their NAPLAN tests, the Grade 6’s
were also very busy! They have been leading different Passion Clubs for the younger students at
lunch time, planning and executing different activities every week.. Through these clubs they have
illustrated teamwork and patience. During student leadership meetings, they have reflected on how
their passion club sessions have gone and how they can improve. They are learning about their own
leadership strengths and weaknesses and are all growing as individuals.
Reconciliation Week and Grade 6 Leadership Portfolios:
Next week is Reconciliation Week (27th May-3rd June) and the Grade 6’s have been learning about
the meaning and importance behind this Week. Each Grade 6 Portfolio will be working towards
bringing Reconciliation awareness to the school and here are a handful of things that will be happening in the next few weeks:
*Teaching MVPS students about Reconciliation Week through Assembly.
*Creating posters and encouraging other students around the school to contribute.
*Visiting other classrooms and teaching them different aspects of the Aboriginal culture.
*Consolidating our school resources that recognise the Indigenous culture and making them readily
available at our library for all students to see.
*Planting Indigenous plants at our school.
And much, much more!
Our school promotes independence and ideas that are student-driven, which help build their confidence and creates better choices for their future. We are pleased to see the Grade 6’s certainly
mirroring these values! Well done to everyone!

Did you know that more than one third of Indigenous students lack basic reading skills? Or that
in some remote communities in the Northern Territory, only one in five students are able to read
at the minimum standard for their year level?
As part of Reconciliation Week, the Junior School Council will be hosting a Great Book Swap to
raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, an organisation working to raise Indigenous
literacy rates around Australia. There are three easy steps to participate:
On Thursday, May 28th bring a book to school that you are ready to swap. It should be in
good condition, and a book that you think someone else will enjoy reading.
Drop your book off to your Junior School Council representative (Preps are welcome to drop
their books off with Ms Bosman in Room 5).
Bring your gold coin donation to the Sherwood Centre at the first half of recess or lunch.
Once you have donated, you can go in to the swap and choose a book from amongst the
donations.

Program Update
This week in OSHC we will be focusing on Autumn.
We will be doing lots of craft activities to do with the season.
And to top it all off we even have a lovely view of our tree in all its autumn glory
outside our window.

CANTEEN NEWS
Thank you so much for all your help in canteen last week – Jacqui de Boer, Rhoda Gavin, Le-Hua Lai, Jenya Kolmakova, Eva Rado, Claire Burzacott, Trinh Lew and Vicki Christofilopoulos. Thank you also to
Joanne Wright for baking some yummy honey cookies for the students to enjoy.
We need 3 Volunteers for each morning shift in canteen and there are plenty of spots left on the roster so
if you are able to help, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 0425 782 697 or at [email protected].
It is definitely hot soup weather so bring along your own mug for an extra big serve of the soup special (or
we will provide one for you). This term the soups are Leek, Zucchini and Parmesan (V) and Beef, Tomato
and Vegetable. They both come with a beautiful fresh bread roll. ($4.00.)
We also have Chicken and Vegetable pies on the menu this term. ($2.50)

Reducing Litter around the school!!
This term the sustainability team has tried their hardest to keep the school clean. We have been encouraging Nude
Food and a bin will also be added to the oval in the near future to reduce rubbish around the area. We would like to
congratulate the 5/6s in particular for improving their Nude Food scores this year and earning a lot more apples for
their tree. As a team, we experienced a lot in Term 1 to help grow our knowledge in the area of sustainability and
having CERES come was great opportunity to teach the Grade 6s to be more sustainable.

Making great progress
The success of the strategies implemented by the Sustainability Team have been really
evident around the school this term. The yard is generally looking much cleaner. All classroom rubbish bins have been downsized because we noticed that very little rubbish was
going in our regular bin, when we have students bringing Nude Food so often and the option of recycling and compost in the classroom also. Thank you to all parents and students
who are helping to develop sustainable habits by buying and using a lot less packaging,
every bit helps contribute to the health of our local and global environment.
