Letter from the President
As I write this column, I know spring is coming, but the 3 degree
temperature confirms that we live in Michigan! I hope when you read
this, the weather will have improved.
While most of us have been hunkered down trying to stay warm, our
very own NRPCA vice president, Erma Leapheart-Gouch, was invited
by WDET to participate in a panel discussion of Community Leaders
regarding our Mayors’ State of the City address – she was terrific!
NRPCA Board Member James Mallory chaired a pre -Valentine’s day
social evening at the Community House which brought fun, music and
friendship to our neighbors - Go, Team!!
On a more serious note: on January 15th, the Block Club Captains and
the Vacant Property Task Force hosted a meeting at our Community
House regarding Tax Foreclosure Prevention and Defense. Over 100
people participated and hopefully found ways to save their home from
Tax Foreclosure. The Mayor is working very hard with others to ensure
no Detroiter loses their home. If you are facing Tax Foreclosure please
contact The United Community Housing Collation at 313-963-3310.
I spoke about possibilities transforming to actions last month; here
are some activities to get you through the late winter and early spring,
brought to you by your board and the volunteers in your neighborhood.
This neighborhood, this board, is all about teamwork!
The Addams Family Musical fundraiser is Friday, March 20th. Doors
open at 7 pm with the show starting at 8pm. Contact Marcia Closson at
313-835-1103 for more information and to reserve your tickets. Please
join us for an evening of laughs and snacks with your neighbors. Kathy
Garrett, Clarenda Webb and our wonderful Block Captains are helping to
organize this event. Please contact Kathy or Clarenda if you are willing to
donate food or beverages that will be served at this NRPCA benefit. We
are so lucky to have so many unsung heroes in our community. The people
behind the scenes, who make the phone calls, work on committees, the CB
Patrol, bake cookies, work in the kitchen at our events and generally go
out of their way to keep this neighborhood special.
The Josh White Junior concert is coming Saturday May 2, 2015. Join
us for an evening of music and fellowship. This is a big fundraiser for
us – please plan early and bring your friends. Tickets will be available
in late March. The eBlast will have the details as soon as they become
available. Speaking of the eBlast- have
you signed up yet? All we need is your
email! Contact our new Membership
Secretary, Chelsea Neblett at cneblett@
grandmontrosedale.com if you would
like to receive this “between Tattler”
information.
We are also coordinating a group outing
to a Tiger Game on Saturday May 23!
More a friend-raiser than a fundraiser, we encourage you to bring your
family and friends and help us cheer on the Ol’ English D. We are reaching
out to our former residents and friends of North Rosedale who were raised
here and still have fond memories of this incredible community. Please help
us spread the word! We hope to have T shirts and hats in time for the event
so we can all show our pride for Detroit’s Greatest Neighborhood. Watch
the April Tattler for more details!!!
To beat the winter doldrums-come to our Community house and check
out ALL our health related activities: Yoga will be coming soon; we have
Zumba, Akido and our famous walking group. These classes are detailed
in this Tattler or if you want more information, please contact our Program
Coordinator, Gloria Goodwine at 313-971-3990. Let us know what classes
or activities you want to see offered at our Community house.
I would like to close with a conversation about our operating budget.
Every house has one, right?( or should have!). It costs a lot to maintain our
Community House and WE REALLY NEED YOU to Get Involved. Please
PAY YOUR DUES, participate in a fundraiser, buy a raffle or offer to
volunteer. More members mean more money to keep the lights on and to
keep the programming going. We hope to have a door to door membership
drive in the spring. Please contact me if you’re willing to help.
I look forward to seeing all of you around the Park and in Our House,
as well in our local businesses that support the NRPCA: among them
: Always Brewing Detroit, Hollywood Hosiery, and a new Bookstore
called Pages Bookshop opening at 19560 Grand River in April (now
housed in Always Brewing).
Happy late Winter and Early Spring!

Important Announcement:
NORTH ROSEDALE PARK RESIDENTS
You should have received your 2015 Civic Association Membership Mailing in October
We need every resident to pay their association dues! The North Rosedale Park Civic Association
depends on your dues to support the jewel of our neighborhood, the Community House and grounds.
We are the only neighborhood in Detroit that owns such a
wonderful place for residents to gather, children to play, and
neighborhood issues to be discussed. But the building and the
grounds can't support themselves. While we generate a fair
amount of revenue from the rental of the Community House, the
dues provide the backbone of our finances.
2
As a dues paying member of the NRPCA, you are part owner
of the Community House and grounds and we desperately need
your support.
Take responsibility for contributing your financial share to
keep our community alive.

Behind the Footlights
The Addams Family: Opening Night
By Roger Loeb
___________________________________________
Three weeks, you rehearse and rehearse.
Two weeks, and it couldn't be worse.
One week, will it ever be right?
Then out of the hat, it's that big first night.
The overture is about to start.
You cross your fingers and hold your heart.
It's curtain time and away we go.
Another openin' of another show.
Cole Porter, Kiss Me Kate
___________________________________________
You walk into the theatre (or in our case,
the Community House). You sit down and
wait expectantly for the first notes of the
overture. THE ADDAMS FAMILY: A new
musical, is about to begin. But what does it
take to make what we hope will be magical
moments happen?
Sure there are a bunch of talented actors,
singers, and dancers seen in the photo below,
ready to give their all. But is that it? Not
nearly. Let's start with the people who run
"the house".
The house manager (the name Sally
Evalt comes to mind) arranges for several
volunteers to be there to welcome you,
to take your ticket, to seat you, to offer
refreshments during the intermission, and to
clean the auditorium while you are headed
for home.
The ticket chairperson (usually our
indefatigable Marcia Closson) has carefully
March 2015 • Volume 90
recorded all reservations cross-referenced
by patron's name and seat location. She
and a trusted assistant are there to provide
the "will call" tickets (those previously
purchased but not mailed), as well as to sell
tickets to the last-minute "walk-ins".
Then there's the "crew". Led by the stage
manager (in the present case, our own Mary
Davis), the crew has arrived early to check
the lights, the sound, the set, the props.
Backstage (left and right), headsets are on
and crew is "at the ready" to respond rapidly
to any issues noticed by the stage manager
during the play. Others man (or woman?)
the light board, the sound board, and the
spotlights, subtly adding texture to your
experience.
Upstairs, costumers are prepared to find the
missing cuff link, repair the torn sleeve, or
give that skirt a final press. Make-up artists
aid the nervous actors in carefully applying
the base, the rouge, the lipstick, and the
powder. As needed, wigs have been set,
combed, and carefully fitted on heads.
As we count down to curtain time, the
music director joins the singers in the
"green room" to warm up their voices. Then
the director arrives to give final notes and
encouragement to "have a great show". The
stage manager calls the actors to "places",
and another show is ready to entertain you,
our wonderful audience that makes it all
worthwhile.

The Rosedale Tattler
Elizabeth Dickson, Park Players President for 2015
Elizabeth’s first production with Park
Players was in 2005 in “The Wiz.” She
made such an impression in her first play
with the Park Players, several regular
play goers have to think twice before they
remember that her name is not Addaperle.
Since her debut on the stage at the North
Rosedale Park Community House, Elizabeth
has been in every play since. “Smokey
Joe’s Café,” “Ragtime,” “Beauty and the
Beast” – whatever the role, Elizabeth puts
her heart into it, and heart is the main reason
why Elizabeth continues to act with the Park
Players and the main reason why she ran
for president of the Park Players. “There’s
a family feel here with the Park Players. It
feels like everyone is related. These are my
friends. Even when we’re not in a show, we
get together.”
resident Cornel Dickson, to thank for
inspiring Elizabeth’s years of involvement.
“My dad saw an ad for auditions for ‘The
Wiz’ and thought I should audition for the
role of the Mean Witch because he thought
she had the best songs.” Even though
Elizabeth landed the role of Addaperle not
the Mean Witch, she did manage to convince
her dad to audition. Cornel has been in
“Ragtime” and “Dreamgirls.” Elizabeth sees
her dad’s involvement with the Park Players
as a great way for the two of them to spend
time together.
As a corporate trainer for Green Path Debt
Solutions, Elizabeth keeps pretty busy
when she’s in a play. The bigger the role,
the bigger the commitment. She has had
big role in five different plays, and admits
that it can be tiring, but the friendships she
develops during production are worth the

effort. She admits

Elizabeth is
really looking
forward to the
Park Players
production of
“The Addams
Family.” She is especially looking forward
to the audience’s reaction: “It’s a funny,
quirky show with great music, strong leads
and a terrific chorus.” If you drive by the
North Rosedale Community House in
the evening, you’ll see the lights are on.
There are actors, stage crew, directors and
even the president of Park Players herself,
Elizabeth Dickson, working hard to make
“The Addams Family” another excellent
production by Park Players – another in a
long, long, 60 year run of great community
theater by a theater company that knows
that maintaining the “community” part of
community theater is just as important as
putting on a good show.
Opening night of “The Addams Family” is
Friday, March 13. The play runs through
Sunday, March 29. For tickets to see “The

The Mulvaneys of High Point Farm in Mt. Ephraim, New York, are a large and
fortunate clan, blessed with good looks, abundant charisma, and boundless promise.
But over the twenty-five year span of this ambitious novel, the Mulvaneys will
slide, almost imperceptibly at first, from the pinnacle of happiness, transformed
by the vagaries of fate into a scattered collection of lost and lonely souls. It is the
youngest son, Judd, now an adult, who attempts to piece together the fragments of the
Mulvaneys' former glory, seeking to uncover and understand the secret violation that
occasioned the family's tragic downfall. Each of the Mulvaneys endures some form of
exile--physical or spiritual--but in the end they find a way to bridge the chasms that
have opened up among them, reuniting in the spirit of love and healing. Profoundly
cathartic, Oates' acclaimed novel unfolds as if, in the darkness of the human spirit, she
has come upon a source of light at its core. Rarely has a writer made such a startling
and inspiring statement about the value of hope and compassion.

vital and interesting news, information and reminders
that sometimes miss the Tattler deadline (the 10th of each
month). The eBlast should arrive in your email around
the 3rd week of each month so as to meet this objective.
In order to receive the eBlast you must be on the "list".
However, it is really easy to signup for the list by visiting
the homepage of the North Rosedale Civic Association
at http://NorthRosedalePark.org and pushing the big red
subscribe button. Get yourself signed up today so that you
will be in the know! The exception to this requirement
is that we have seeded the list with a number of email
addresses that we have from our membership roster so your
name may be on the list already. If you're not sure you can
still push the subscribe button as the same email address
will not be signed up twice. If for some reason you do not
wish to be subscribed there will be a link at the bottom of
each newsletter that may be used to unsubscribe. In case
you want to be sure that this newsletter does not fall into
your junk mail folder, be sure to just add the newsletter
sender to your address book. You are encouraged to send
articles for publication to the eBlast editor: cneblett@
grandmontrosedale.com.
