Letter from the President
Yes, it is finally spring!
I love seeing the kids on their bikes, baseball players practicing
on the Park baseball diamond, and neighbors cleaning up and
interacting after a long cold winter. This is what our community,
our neighborhood is all about. A big part of what makes and keeps
our neighborhood so neighborly is our North Rosedale Park Civic
Association. The NRPCA not only maintains our one and only
Detroit community-owned Community House, the NRPCA also
provides a wide range of activities. There is sure to be something of
interest for every neighbor.
Here is what your membership in the NRPCA has done and has planned:
• We hosted a wonderfully successful free to the children Easter Egg
hunt for little ones 10 and under.
• During a blinding rainstorm on April 9 a loyal group of community
members heard a presentation about rain gardens and then an
update on the renovations to our Community House and the
Capital Campaign. The Opening Day for the Rosedale Grandmont
Little League took place Saturday, April 25. Players arrived in their
fresh, new uniforms and marched through the neighborhood. Then
the players and their families gathered in our Community House
for a Pancake Breakfast getting pumped up for the new season.
• The NRPCA has a new, fabulous, user-friendly website, nrpca.
org, that gives information on activities at the Community House,
upcoming community events, allows donations to the NRPCA and
to our subsidiary, the Legacy Fund (Capital Campaign) with the
click of a button using your credit card and even provides the option
to pay your membership dues on a monthly or quarterly basis.
• Former resident Josh White, Jr. will have a concert at the
Community House on May 2 at 7 pm. Call 248-320-6089 to get
your tickets!
• As a community, we have reserved several tickets for the May 23
at 4 pm Tiger Game! Call 313-532-4428 to get your tickets!
• The Northwest Detroit Farmers’ Market will kick off its 10th
season Thursday, June 4 (see
article) in the Community House
parking lot. The Farmers’ Market
will be there every Thursday from
4 - 8pm until October 1. It’s a great
placed to buy local, fresh produce,
grab dinner from a food truck, and
just hang out under our wonderful
oak tree and catch up with your
neighbors! We hope to have a perennial exchange and Tomato
Plant Sale too. There’s even talk of starting a Garden Club!
• June Day is June 13! Get your block together and make a float
for the 11am parade! Get ready to run in the Run for the Roses
at 8 am! Have lunch at the Rosedale Café! Try your skills at the
midway games! Shop the vendors! Surely there’s something for
everyone at June Day!
All this activity, while a joy to participate in, doesn't happen
accidentally – it is all about hard work and community involvement.
So please, as you are enjoying these activities, (or dreaming up
new ideas), give an hour to your neighborhood and get involved
in something that matters to you. Your NRPCA board and your
neighbors will thank you for it, and you will have the pride that comes
from being a good citizen – an important member of North Rosedale
Park. Now I’m off to talk a walk through our beautiful neighborhood.

Spring Challenge, March 31st to June 31st; first five walkers who meet their personal
goals will be entered into a drawing to win a free pedometer. Also, those with highest
attendance and step count will pick a ticket to win other walk-worthy prizes, one step
at a time. (One prize per walker, please)

Jordyn and Leeah Burr,
Track Stars and North Rosedale Park Residents

Both Jordyn and Leeah Burr are a bit
shy about their accomplishments in
track and field, but once they bring
out their medals, plaques, patches and
trophies, it becomes pretty difficult to
understate just how good – or fast –
they are. Jordyn is 6 years old and has
set national records in the 60 yard dash,
the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter
dash. While Leeah, age 10, did not set
a national record (yet), she did take
second in the 60 meter dash, and third
in the 200 meter dash. However, one
very important detail needs to be added:
Leeah ran against athletes who were
three years older than her. While this
may not seem like a big age difference,
it is when one is 5 years old! When
she was 5, Jordyn tagged along to her
sister Leeah’s track practice, and, like
a lot of kids would, Jordyn didn’t want
to watch, she wanted to practice too.
Leeah’s coach took one look at Jordyn
and asked the girls’ mother, Toria Burr
if she’d consider letting Jordyn join the
team.
worth it. “It’s fun,” says Leeah, “I like
beating my own time.” There was a
time when Leeah was on a cheerleading
team. At the end of cheer season, a
friend of her dad’s mentioned that the
Police Athletic League, or PAL, had
a track and field team and that Leeah
might want to try that out. She gave it
a shot and was done with cheer. “It’s
interesting and fun,” Leeah says. In
school, the girls’ classmates are hesitant
to race against either one of them at
recess. Jordyn offers a shy smile when
she reveals the reason why the kids are
her school think twice before racing
against her: “They’ve seen me run.”
They both are more than a little please
that even their 14 year old football
player brother can’t beat them in a
race. At a meet in Belleville, Jordyn
immediately drew the attention of the
announcer who shouted “She shot out
of there like a cannon!” At the end of
the race, local TV crews and a reporter
approached Jordyn for a quick post-race
interview.
Both have competed in the Junior
Olympics and run track just about year
round. The girls travel both within and
outside of Michigan to compete. Such
a schedule is a lot to demand of a 6 and
10 year old, but for the Burr girls, it’s

The focus of this year’s Motor City
Makeover will be the garden entrance to
Grandmont Rosedale at the Southfield
Freeway and Grand River. Volunteers

and then head out together to the garden
to trim, weed and clean up to garden. To

is hosting a “Community Sip and Shop,” a

to come shop before Love Travels Imports
leaves the pop-up space at the end of May.

GRDC and Revolve Detroit in partnership
with Charter One’s “Growing Communities”
initiative solicited applications for a new
pop-up business at The Grand River
WorkPlace. The process of selection is
underway, so look for a new addition to
Grandmont Rosedale’s business community
this June! The Grand River WorkPlace is
a co-working community that provides
flexible, affordable shared office space for
small businesses and entrepreneurs. For

applications for new WorkPlace members.

MOSAICS IN THE PARK CAMPAIGN
Artist Hubert Massey will be returning to
Stoepel Park this summer to install mosaics
on the seven new dugouts. He has a great
deal of experience installing public art with
input from the surrounding community
and is busy putting together sketches to
present to Grandmont Rosedale residents.
Now it’s time to do our part. The Mosaic
in the Park crowdfunding campaign has
the goal of raising $13,000 by June 19 to
be matched by the Michigan Economic
Development Corporation. Donors can
access the campaign by going to partonicity.
com starting May 5 and searching “Mosaics
in the Park.” Alternatively, donors can
contribute cash or write a check with
an indication that the funds are to go to
“Mosaics in the Park” and either drop it by
GRDC or mail it to GRDC, 19800 Grand
River, Detroit, MI 48223. Incentives are
offered to those donating $25, $100, $250,

TRASHTALKIN’ SATURDAY,
MAY 23
This month’s Trash Talkin’ will take
place Saturday, May 23 at 9:30 am when
volunteers will gather for a half hour of
coffee and conversation before heading out
for about an hour of light litter pickup. In
the interest of getting as much of Grandmont
Rosedale looking as good as it can, this
Trash Talkin’ will begin at Pinky’s Shuga
Shack at 18929 Schoolcraft. Litter grabbers,
gloves and trash bags will be provided. For

NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY MEETING
THURSDAY, MAY 28
The topic of the 6:30 pm Thursday, May
28 Neighborhood Safety Meeting will
be “Human Trafficking and Its Impact
on Families and Crime in Detroit.” Cpl.
Erin Diamond from the Wayne County
Sheriff’s Office will be the guest speaker.
Cpl. Diamond is also member of the FBI
Southeastern Michigan Crimes Against
Children Task Force and is the Chair of
the Governor’s Commission on Human
Trafficking. The Neighborhood Safety
Meeting will take place at the North

Annual Easter Egg Hunt: An Amazing Success!
On Saturday, April 5th, 2015, more than 200 children, parents,
pets and the Easter Bunny himself, converged on the Rosedale
Community House. It was a sight to see so many smiles, and happy
faces of children excited by a Petting Zoo with rabbits, goats,
turkeys, and a llama too. Children and their parents were amazed by
all of the activities packed into one event including face painting,
crafts, sack races with prizes and a candy filled piñata donated by
McDonald’s, more than 2000 eggs scattered throughout the lawn for
children ages 1-10, and pizza, cookies, apple slices, punch and more!
The day was filled with a myriad of opportunities to create memories
that will last a lifetime and remain in the hearts of our children
forever. The event spearheaded by Honorary Chair & Signature

committee of Co-Chairs including: Vicki Holmes (Activities), Lois

North Rosedale Park eBlast Newsletter
aka: Rosedale Tattler eBLAST EDITION
Last year marked the beginning of the Rosedale Tattler
eBLAST EDITION. An electronic newsletter designed
to supplement the printed version of the Tattler will be
distributed via email. The eBLAST EDITION is not
intended to replace the printed Tattler, but to provide
vital and interesting news, information and reminders
that sometimes miss the Tattler deadline (the 10th of each
month). The eBlast should arrive in your email around
the 3rd week of each month so as to meet this objective.
In order to receive the eBlast you must be on the "list".
However, it is really easy to sign up for the list by visiting
the homepage of the North Rosedale Civic Association
at http://NorthRosedalePark.org and pushing the big red
subscribe button. Get yourself signed up today so that you
will be in the know! The exception to this requirement
is that we have seeded the list with a number of email
addresses that we have from our membership roster so your
name may be on the list already. If you're not sure, you can
still push the subscribe button as the same email address
will not be signed up twice. If for some reason you do not
wish to be subscribed, there will be a link at the bottom of
each newsletter that may be used to unsubscribe. In case
you want to be sure that this newsletter does not fall into

Built in the 30's, the historic North Rosedale Park
Community House has been carefully adapted to provide
meeting space for a variety of business and social events.
The Community House offers Pre-WWII charm and
character for meetings, conferences, workshops, private
parties and receptions. Daytime weekday rentals offer a
great and affordable setting for classes and seminars.
The Community House has many modern amenities,
including a kitchen, audiovisual equipment, and free

Once again North Rosedale Park residents came out to support their North Rosedale Park
Civic Association. The combined total from the March 20 ticket proceeds and the 50/50 raffle
came to over $1000! The NRPCA is responsible for everything from paying the electrical bills
at the Community House to making sure the family fun of June Day continues, so the need is
great! The benefit performance of “The Addams Family” is one of the many ways the NRPCA
gathers the community not just to raise funds, but also to celebrate North Rosedale Park as
