May 17, 2015 My friends today we hear about the radical transition Jesus’ disciples faced when he departed. They were to proclaim the Gospel to every creature. He promised to send the Holy Spirit. Their work was just starting, and it continues today through us. Who could have imagined all this from an itinerant preacher? PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark's Gospel we hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to "proclaim the gospel to every creature." For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Treating others with dignity and respect, providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming together as God's family in worship and praise--these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Pentecost weekend, May 23-24, I ask that you generously support the combined collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) and The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. The CCC supports projects throughout the world that evangelize both Catholics and non-Catholics alike through the use of various print and electronic media, including social media. The Catholic University of America (CUA) is the national university of the Catholic Church and the only higher education institution founded by the US Bishops and chartered by the Vatican. With the growth of new media, people all over the globe have greater opportunities to connect in the digital environment. The CCC enters this digital environment by providing grants to support local and international communications projects that share the experience of faith, worship, and witness. In response to increased media interest since Pope Francis’ election, funding from the CCC has allowed greater coverage of the Vatican, both by Catholic media and the USCCB communications team. In Kenya, the CCC is developing a long-term plan to assist the Kenyan Conference of Catholic Bishops in deploying a radio network across the country. The stations and equipment will allow the Church to broadcast religious programming and help build community. The Catholic University of America educates clergy, religious and young lay men and women from every geographical region of the United States. Our national university is educating an important generation of lay and ordained leaders within the United States. Through its national seminary, the University provides graduate degrees for seminarians sponsored by nearly 195 US Catholic dioceses. Ninety-five of our Bishops and Cardinals and many of our diocesan clergy have studied at CUA. This annual collection supports CUA’s Parish Scholarship Program, which provides annual scholarships valued at $4.5 million. A portion of the proceeds of this joint collection remains in the Diocese of Jefferson City to support our local evangelization efforts, which include the diocesan website and Facebook page, faith-based ads on regional radio stations and the “Mustard Seed” scripture mediation radio programs in Moberly and California. In addition, the student financial aid made possible through this collection will help future Catholic leaders experience an education grounded in Catholic tradition at America’s Catholic University. On May 23-24, your assistance will help us live our Christian witness in our Diocese, our nation and internationally. Please generously support this important diocesan collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign and The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John R. Gaydos Bishop of Jefferson City
