WOMEN BUILD 2015 - Nevada County Habitat For Humanity

WOMEN GIVING WOMEN AND FAMILIES A BETTER FUTURE
WOMEN BUILD 2015
ABOUT WOMEN BUILD
EMPOWERING WOMEN IN NEVADA COUNTY A HAND-UP NOT A HAND-OUT
The Women Build program, since 2012, has
engaged and empowered 150 local women on 25
build teams! These remarkable women have raised a
total of $43,000 and spent 900 total hours on our build
site building homes for other women & families!
Poverty housing is a severe threat to children’s
health, growth, education and potential. As mothers,
daughters, sisters, and grandmothers, we know that
not having a stable home environment in which to
grow and thrive in is an unacceptable situation. We
have made and will continue to make a significant
impact on an issue that is important to all of us, and
in the process lift up our entire community.
Through Women Build, fundraising & volunteer teams,
sponsors, and homeowner partners come together for a
cause. The groups work side by side to construct houses,
help Habitat increase its building capacity, and change
lives through home ownership.
SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FUNDRAISING
As part of our green efforts, most of our Women Build
fundraising is done through our online fundraising
application and the power of social media to minimize
the amount of paper used in this process. Teams solicit
donations using email and recruit support via the
Women Build website at:
www.nchabitat.org
Our greatest challenge is finding the necessary funds to pay for materials, tools, and
other construction costs. Your fundraising in small amounts from people you know
will help fund what is needed for the success of our Women Build Project.

STORY STORIES
Melissa moved to Grass Valley from Sacramento twelve years ago so that her
son, now 16, would grow up in a good school system. She is a single mom
living paycheck to paycheck in an old Victorian that is run down, riddled with
mold, and expensive to heat in the winter. Rent is high and utilities are astronomical. She’s worked at her job at Raley’s for seven years and loves it (just
got a promotion!), but with her expenses making ends meet is a struggle each
month. Thoughts of owning a home or saving for the future were a pipe
dream until she learned about Habitat.
“Having a house is going to transform the future for my entire family. A home
that is totally ours means that we can define together what home means to us
for the first time. I’m excited not just for the house but to be able to live in a community of families. I believe that it
takes a village to raise a child, and I’m looking forward to being a part of a neighborhood where we all know and care
about each other.”
Sari Townsend, a single mother of four children was raised in a nomadic family that moved about every 11 months. She never had a
home base to or a sense of community roots. By the time her eldest
was 12, her family moved 13 times, at one point living in her sister’s
garage. Tradition is very important to Sari. Moving often didn’t allow
her to keep the meaningful things that form a family identity, like
children’s crafts, school projects, report cards, keepsakes, and heirlooms. With a forever home, Sari and her family will finally have
space for their traditions, a place to come home to, and a place
where memories and cherished possessions will find sanctuary.
“Moving often is exhausting, expensive, and each time it broke my heart. Having nothing to show for my money and living in a place where the kids can’t safely play outside has kept us from thriving. Home is where the heart is, and our family’s heartbeat will be stronger when we have a permanent safe haven. We thought owning our own home was an
impossible dream, but Habitat will make it come true. ” Sari looks forward to her home being the hub of tradition for
future generations, providing stability, security, and permanence for her children and grandchildren.

2015 TEAM FUNDRAISING LEVELS
As a 2015 Women Build captain, you choose what level team you would like to strive for. These levels are goals, meaning that they’re not written in stone—you can always raise more than what’s listed. But if you know your team will be
able to commit to a higher-level of fundraising we’d like to be able to fulfill the benefits of that level right from kick-off.

ABOUT NEVADA COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
OUR MISSION: Building decent, affordable homes in
partnership with local families.
SINCE 1996, NEVADA COUNTY HABITAT,
WITH YOUR SUPPORT:
Nevada County Habitat for Humanity builds homes
and neighborhoods in Nevada County, CA. We rely on
the support of thousands of volunteers, donors, and
businesses.
Built 27 homes in Grass Valley, Penn Valley, &
Nevada City
Currently, Nevada County Habitat for Humanity is
working on a 16-home development on Joyce Drive in
Grass Valley. This is our first “green” development and
we plan to apply sustainable energy efficient building
methods and materials. All homeowners must earn 3060% of the Area Median Income to be eligible and contribute a minimum of 500 sweat equity hours to help
build their homes.
Removed 75 children from over-crowded,
unsafe, & hazardous, living conditions.
Habitat provides “a hand up, not a handout.” Homes
are purchased through a zero-interest, 30 year mortgage held by Nevada County Habitat for Humanity, and
homeowners often find that their monthly mortgage
payment is far less costly than when they rented.
Solved poverty & housing issues facing some
women & children
2 new families moved into their homes in 2014
Stimulated the local economy through:
 Purchasing building supplies locally
 Importing cash to Nevada County through
national or statewide grants
 Supporting City & Service Fees
Built a stronger community through volunteering
