As a Joint Honours student at Newcastle, you will divide
your time between Politics and Economics.

Entry Requirements
All candidates are considered on an individual basis. If your
qualifications are not listed here, please see our additional
entry requirements web pages to find out which other
qualifications are considered.
A Levels
AAA-ABB including General Studies. A or AS level
Mathematics is desirable but not essential. GCSE
Mathematics (minimum grade A) required if not offered at a
higher level. A level subject combinations are assessed on
a case-by-case basis.
At least one A level from a social science or humanities
subject such as History, Government and Politics,
Geography, English or Philosophy is preferred but not
essential.
Scottish Qualifications
AAAAA-AABBB at Higher Grade. Mathematics desirable but
not essential. Mathematics at grade 2 Standard Grade (or
Intermediate 2 equivalent) required if not offered at Higher
Grade. Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers
accepted. Where a candidate bypasses the assessment for
National 5 qualifications, a minimum of grade C in the
Higher in Mathematics is required.
International Baccalaureate
A minimum of 34 points. Higher Level Mathematics
desirable at grade 5 or above. Standard Level Mathematics
or Mathematical Studies required at grade 6 if not offered at
Higher Level.
Irish Leaving Certificate
A1A1A1AB-A1A1B1B1B at Higher Level. Mathematics
desirable but not essential. Grade A Mathematics required
at Ordinary Level if not offered at Higher Level.
Access Qualifications
30 level 3 credits at Distinction and 15 level 3 at Merit. A
mathematic unit is required with Distinction if evidence of
mathematical ability is not demonstrated by previous
qualifications.
BTEC Level 5 HND
Applicants will be considered on an individual basis.
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC
National Diploma)
Applicants will be considered on an individual basis.
Cambridge Pre-U

English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English require a
minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

specified above, you should consider a preparation course
at INTO Newcastle University, which will help to prepare you

Many of our politics graduates have entered positions such
as financial analysts, stock market account executives and
management consultants. As well as some of our graduates
entering careers in politics, other career areas have included
HR, education, sales and marketing
Some politics graduates go on to study vocational courses
for example in law, marketing or teaching or continue with
postgraduate work in subjects such as politics, business
and finance.

Studying politics encourages the development of both
specific and transferable skills. You will not only learn how to
demonstrate your knowledge of different political systems
and how to interpret political issues and events, but critically
you will also develop the ability to examine issues from a
range of viewpoints, construct well-researched arguments
and present information in a balanced and unbiased
manner.
Our courses will enable you to acquire the essential skills of
research, teamwork, and communication.
Voluntary and work experience can provide you with further
opportunities to develop valuable skills to prepare you for
employment. Whether related to a career in politics or more
general, this experience shows that you have an interest in
the community and can use your time effectively, make
