Fish Waste in Livewells
• Fish excrete waste as CO2 and ammonia • These waste products can stress and kill fish if not
removed from livewells
• CO2 is removed by aeration
• Ammonia is only removed by water exchange
• Fish produce more waste as water temps increase
Temperature Management Recommendations

Fill livewell early in the day w/clean lake water
Run boat’s recirculating pump while filling
Monitor water temperature throughout day
If lake temp <75 ºF, just exchange lake water
If lake temp >75 ºF, attempt to cool water 5 - 10 ºF
Do not overload livewell (5 fish max)
Using ventilation products to add air while
removing heat buildup and CO2 in livewells is also
good!
