SoCal Fishing Report for 4/23 UPCOMING EVENTS: East Sierra Trout Opener – Saturday, April 25th, lots of trout eagerly awaiting your offerings. The water level is VERY low at Grant Lake in the June Lake Loop, fish are concentrated, there were plenty of them feeding on the surface, and it appears to be primed for the opener. Launching boats will be a problem, so kayakers and float tubers will have a distinct advantage here. Mammoth Lakes anglers might be hauling more limits than they have seen in many years. The fish have been active and feeding for weeks, insects are hatching and that means fish are used to seeing bait on the water. Don Barrett at Barrett’s Landing on Lake Mary said anglers arriving early will be able to scout the lake to locate bigger fish since they won’t be fighting an ice cover. Lake Sabrina almost feels like summer in the high country, they’re ice-free and will have some boats on the Lake for Opening Day—so you can motorboat to the back natural Lake. SALT WATER FISHING: The Coronado Islands yellowtail bite is back, the fish are spread out around the islands, just look for the birds, and throw fly-lined live bait, surface iron, and yo-yo jigs. Most fish are being caught high in the water column now, on surface iron and fly-lined live bait…there are lots of no-see-ums, and the fish are all over it. Both private boaters and at least two party boats got in on some of the action. San Clemente Island is also cranking out lots of forkies, but check for military closures. Some of yesterday’s catches: Malihini 3/4 day's 15 anglers got 58 yellowtail, 17 bonito San Diego 3/4 day's 33 anglers got 77 yellowtail Mission Belle 3/4 day's 21 anglers got 41 yellowtail, 10 bonito Bait Report: Everingham Bros has 5 – 7” dines in both bays.
